Timothy P. Murphy, Memorial Book Signing

Arlene D. Sawyer

Arlene D. Sawyer, 84, of North Platte passed away on February 27, 2019 at Great Plains Health.  Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Matthew Nash officiating.

Shawna Leigh Tatman

Shawna Leigh Tatman, of North Platte, died unexpectedly at Great Plains Health on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.  She was 56 years old.

Shawna was born on December 17, 1962 at Cheyenne, Wyoming to Jerry Lee and Joyce Elaine (Stumpf) White.  Shawna was raised by her mom and they lived in Cheyenne until her sophomore year in high school when they moved to North Platte, Nebraska.  Shawna graduated from North Platte High School in 1981, then attended Mid-Plains Community College.  She soon began working at the North Platte Senior Center and that led to a 37 year career, with the past 15 years serving as the Director.  Shawna was recognized for her work as the 2018 Woman of Achievement.

On February 16, 1984, Shawna was united in marriage to Michael Hart Tatman in North Platte.  she loved her work, her dogs, and her family – they were her life.  Shawna was the proudest Mema who loved each of her grandkids to the  moon and back.

Shawna also cared about the welfare of children and was a child liason with the Guardians of the Children where she was know as “Sapphire.”  Shawna was on a Thursday night pool league and a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary.  When not working, she enjoyed being home, working in her flower beds, taking pictures of outdoors and being a part of family gatherings.  Shawna and Mike loved riding their Harley and watching home improvement shows.  She was a kind, compassionate woman who was taken from us much too soon.

She is survived by her husband, Mike of North Platte; children, Misty Tatman and her husband Anthony Plunk of North Platte, Mitchell and wife, Amber Tatman of Stapleton, Christopher and wife, Jami Tatman of North Platte and Stephanie and husband, Daniel Seamann of Hershey; 12 grandchildren, Isaiah, Elijah, D’Avion, Dalton, Raymond, Abi, SAvannah, Laramie, Mason, Jemma, Jeremiah, and Gracie; her mother, Joyce White of Cheyenne; mother-in-law, Sue Tatman of North Platte; father and his wife, Jerry and Ann White of Lingle, Wyoming; sister-in-law, Page (Phil) Cardenas of Cheyenne; nieces, Sarah and Elizabeth Cardenas; and other family.

Shawna was preceded in death by her grandparents, Herman and Henrietta Stumpf; and father-in-law, Ron Tatman.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the First Christian Church in North Platte with Pastor Jan Ekstedt officiating.  Burial will follow in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.  The casket will be closed.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.  Instead of flowers or plants, memorials are to the Senior Center to help others.

Modesta Hernandez

Modesta Hernandez, formerly of Hershey, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, at Great Plains Health, at the age of 93.  Modesta was born on November 4, 1925 in Stamford, Texas to Issac and isabella (Tobar) Garza.  She grew up in Texas and later moved to Hershey, Nebraska.

On November 7, 1945, Modesta married Demetrio Jose ‘Pete’ Hernandez in North Platte, Nebraska.  They lived in Sutherland, Nebraska for a short time, then moved to Texas and returned to Nebraska in 1954, settling in Hershey.  Modesta worked for TRW in Sutherland and Ogallala, Best Linen and Great Plains Hospital in North Platte, and the Sutherland Care Center , from which she retired.

Modesta was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  She liked fishing, crocheting and watching ‘Days of Our Lives.’  She loved her dog, Bear, and her family and enjoyed spending time with them all.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Erlinda and Joe Mata of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Arthur and Janet Hernandez of Aurora, Colorado, and Fermin and Sharon Hernandez, Richard Sr and Donna Hernandez and Michael and Gloria Hernandez all of North Platte; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great great-grandson; brother Lucio Garza of Hershey; sister, Guadalupe Wood of Rochester, Minnesota; her dog, Bear; as well as many other family members.

Modesta was preceded in death by her husband, Pete; daughter, Heneritta; son, Joseph Hernandez; sister, Mary Lou McRae and Christina Hernandez; brothers, Domingo and Nile Garza; sister-in-law, Connie Garza; and granddaughter, Rachel Hernandez.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in North Platte with Celebrant Father Matthew Nash.  Burial will follow in the North Platte Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, with family greeting friends from 4 – 6 p.m. followed by a Rosary Service at 6:00 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore in North Platte, which is in charge of the arrangements.  Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com

Harold Dudley Stroud

Harold Dudley Stroud, of North Platte, died at home surrounded by his
family on Monday, February 25, 2019, at the age of 81.

Harold was born March 23, 1937, to Alexander Dudley and Mable Louise
(Pellett) Stroud at Garland, Kansas.  He grew up in Kansas where he
attended Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville then graduated from
Fort Scott High School in 1955. Harold moved to Coffeyville and worked
for Exnerdodge, Fadelers, Armstrong Ice Cream, Co. and Sears.

On September 15, 1956, Harold married Carol Sue McPheeters at
Coffeyville and they had three children, Steve, Roger and Katheryn.
They first lived in Sedan, Kansas for nine months while Harold managed a
gas station then returned to Coffeyville so he could work for Sears.  In
August 1971 Sears transferred the family to North Platte then a short
time later Harold hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad as an
electrician.  He retired from the railroad in 1999.

While working on the railroad Harold and Carol owned Stroud Development,
where Harold designed, built and remodeled houses and Carol helped him
and did the bookwork.  He continued building and remodeling until three
years ago when he had to stop due to his health.

Harold enjoyed traveling and taking his family to Canada, Mexico and 46
states.  Carol and Harold were married for 45 years when she died in
August 2001.

On June 19, 2009, Harold married Cynthia Burton in North Platte and she
added four children, Teresa, Stephen, Nathan and Cameron, to the family.

He is survived by his wife, children, many grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Along with his wife, Carol, Harold was preceded in death by their son,
Steve; son-in-law, Dee Greeley; his parents and all his siblings.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the
North Platte Baptist Church on Rodeo Road with Pastor Bill Reeves
officiating.  Burial will follow in the North Platte Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Odean Colonial
Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.  Online

memorials are to Great Plains Hospice.

Marliyn K. Ruiz

Marilyn K. Ruiz, age 84 of North Platte, passed away February 22, 2019 at Great Plains Health with her family by her side. She was born on June 26, 1934 at North Platte, to Walter and Leota (Miller) Anthony. Marilyn grew up in North Platte until the age of 14 when she attended the Nebraska School for the Deaf.

On July 1, 1961 she was united in marriage to Sotero Ruiz. Marilyn was a devoted full-time mother and grandmother and was employed by the United States Postal Service for 18 years. Marilyn had a strong faith in Jehovah God and was a member of the North Platte congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed classic western movies, puzzles, crafts, and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Sotero, of North Platte, son; Richard Ruiz of Lincoln, daughters; Linda (Barry) Nalley of North Platte and Audrey (Mark) Ruiz Lambert of Morehead, KY, brother; Jimmy (Carolyn) Anthony of Grand Island, sisters; Audrey Clouse of North Platte and Elaine (Leland) Spanjer of Cozad, grandsons; Richard (Tracy) Housman Jr., David Housman, Derek Nalley, Joel (Monique) Ruiz, and Joseph Ruiz, great grand-children, Tucker Nason Housman, Leo Milton Housman, Isabella Rose Ruiz, and Emilio Quin Ruiz, sister-in-law; Dixie Anthony, and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Neal, Otis, and Jackie Anthony, and a sister; Dorla Keup.

Private family services will be held. Carpenter Memorial Chapel is in care of arrangements.

Joseph A. Miller

Joseph A. Miller, 91 of North Platte died February 24, 2019 in North Platte, NE and went to his reward above.  Joe was born to Theodore William and Katherine Antonia (Maystadt) Miller in Holstein, NE on February 12, 1928.

Joe attended Snow Flake country school, 5 miles south of Norman for 8 years, and Norman High School for 2 years before transferring and graduating from Minden High.  He held a farm job for a year before enlisting in the United States Army where he attended basic training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.  He also attended special vehicle training and was sent to Luzon, Philippians.  Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Nebraska to work on the farm with his father for a year, before moving to Bettendorf, Iowa where he worked for two years.  Joe was married to Evelyn Beck at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Minden, NE on August 10, 1950.  To this union were born five children.  Joe returned to the Heartwell and Minden area where he would farm for 39 years, before retiring in 1983 and moving to Sun Lakes, AZ where he and Evelyn lived for 25 years.  The two kept a summer home in North Platte and returned in 2004 to be closer to family.

Joe was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, and the Kearney Elks.  He had many hobbies, in his earlier years Joe enjoyed taking his family in the motor home and on boating trips.  He was an avid Husker fan, attending games regularly since 1958.  He was a member of the Touchdown Club and never missed a game on radio or TV in his later years.  He loved golfing, woodworking, and building things for his family.  He spent many hours on the computer.  He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of North Platte; children, Barbara Jo Miller, Renee (Dale) Gant, Carol (Steve) Rea, Lynn (Mark) Larson all of North Platte, and John (Debbie Heavey) Miller of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Mike (Stacy) Gant of Honey Creek, IA, Joe Gant of North Platte, Chris (Crystal) Rea of Oklahoma City, OK, Brian (Erin) Rea of Lincoln, Greg (Lisa Lashley) Rea of North Platte, Lucas (Haley) Larson of Waverly, Alyssa (Justin Graham) Larson of Omaha, Tyler and Makayla Miller of Phoenix, and their mother, Pam Miller; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Regan, Taryn, Bodi, Natalie, Kennedy, Amelia, Lyla, Baylie, Ayla, Paetyn, Owen, & Madelyn; sister, Helen Vieger of Mesquite, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lavern (Dolly) Miller, Paul (Hazel) Miller, and Tony (Dorothy) Miller; sisters, Jeanette (Earl) Parr, and Josephine (Ray) Tyndale; and a great-granddaughter, Adelyn Rea.

Barbara Joan Troxel Vedder

Barbara Joan Troxel Vedder, 75, of Wallace, Nebraska, passed away in Denver, Colorado on February, 22, 2019.  Barbara was born at Scottsbluff, Nebraska on May 6, 1943, to Raymond Oscar and Marie Gilligan Marsh Troxel. She attended school north of Mitchell, Nebraska, before moving to West Plain, Missouri for five years and finally graduating from high school at North Platte, Nebraska in 1962.  After high school, she worked for 6th Street foods and then the telephone company.  On November 10, 1968 she married Henry Vedder of Wallace.

She was a communion steward for the United Methodist Church in Wallace, a former member of the garden club, and enjoyed tending her flowers and gardening.

Survivors include her husband, Henry Vedder; daughter, Zhonette (Greg) Brown of Denver, Colorado; son, Frank (Michelle) Vedder of Des Moines, Iowa; Grandchildren, Michaela and Noah Brown and Aiden Vedder; a sister, Avalon Biederman, Melbourne, Florida; two brothers, David (Sara) Troxel, Knightdale, North Carolina and Carl Troxel, Mitchell, Nebraska; a sister in law, Gloria Schultz, brother in law, Nyle Knoles, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Tom, George, Robert, and John; and five sisters, Roberta Lewis, Wanda Griffin, Betty Clark, Amy Mettin Sparks, and Rosemary Edwards; her step mother, Dorothy Troxel; her mother and father in law, brothers and sisters in law, and numerous others.

Barbara was blessed with many more family and friends that spanned her life.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March. 2, at the Wallace Methodist Church. Ruby Perkins

Ruby Perkins, age 95, of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday,
February 20, 2019, at Linden Court.

Ruby was born April 26, 1923, in Keene, Nebraska, to Mabel and Albert
Olson.  Upon graduation from Wilcox High, she attended Kearney State
Teachers’ College and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary
Education.  For five years she enjoyed teaching fourth grade students in
Oshkosh and North Platte.

On September 15, 1948, Ruby married Glenn Perkins and the couple settled
on a farm west of North Platte.  The couple owned and operated a farming
and cattle feeding business in the Platte Valley Community for many
years.  After Glenn’s death in 1995, Ruby continued to assist her son in
the business operation. Ruby lived on the farm for 70 years, until
recently moving to Linden Court in January.

Ruby was accomplished in the areas of baking, crocheting, and knitting.
She shared her abilities by leading a 4-H Club for many years and was a
past member of the Platte Valley Women’s Club.  In her younger days she
served in various capacities as a member of the First Christian Church.
Her faith has been an inspiration to others.

Ruby was a devoted mother and grandmother to her three children, six
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  She is survived by her
daughter, Cristy Rau (Don) of Palm Coast, Florida, and sons, Gale (Jane)
Perkins of Poulsbo, Washington, and Byron (Karen) Perkins of North
Platte.  Her grandchildren include Brad (Julie) Rau, Laurie (Bob)
DeChello, Lisa (Jon) Clemens, Jesse (Kara) Perkins, Ellie (Pat)
Sullivan, and Jed Perkins.  She is also survived by one sister, Linnea
Olsen, of Lincoln.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ardelle
Olson, brother, Ced Olson, and parents.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Odean
Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor Jan Ekstedt officiating.  In
keeping with Ruby’s wishes, there will be no viewing and burial will be
for family.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or prior
to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in
charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the First
Christian Church.

Jean Sunbeam Bowen

Jean Sunbeam Bowen, 89, formerly of North Platte, died Wednesday,
February 20, 2019, at Kimball County Manor.

Jean was born in Gothenburg on August 20, 1929, to John and Avis Carrey
Earll.  She grew up and attended school in Gothenburg then started
cooking at restaurants in the area and in North Platte.

On July 24, 1959, Jean married Eugene LeRoy Bowen in North Platte and
they lived in various Nebraska towns before settling in North Platte.
By 2000 they moved to Sidney to be closer to family then Eugene passed
away four years later.

Jean was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Church of Jesus Christ
of Later-day Saints.  She enjoyed doing puzzle books and going to
meetings at the Eagles.  She will be remembered as a loving and caring
person who had a big heart for her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Along with her husband, Eugene, Jean was preceded in death by her
daughter, Martha Kimball; sons, William and Roger Bowen;
daughter-in-law, Mary Bowen; her parents, John and Avis Earll; sisters,
Hazel Earll, Lena Zogg and Irene McDermitt; and brother, Bob Earll.

Jean is survived by her sons, Leo Bowen, Sr., of Sidney, Arvine Bowen,
and the son she raised, Eldon (Lydia) Adcock, both of Colorado Springs,
Colorado; stepdaughter, Jerri Chamberlain, of Woodland, California; 25
grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many other family members.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in North Platte. Burial will follow
in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the
service at the church.  Online condolences may be shared at
odeanchapel.com.  Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of
arrangements.
