Daniel Gene Hengen

Daniel Gene Hengen, age 59 of Madrid, NE unexpectedly passed away Monday, October 24, 2016 at his mother’s home in North Platte.
Dan was born on May 29, 1957 in Sutherland, NE to Stephen “Paul” and Leslie “Pat” (Fletcher) Hengen. He grew up on the Hengen Ranch on the North River Road and graduated from Hershey High School in 1975. He worked at numerous places in the North Platte and Hershey areas. He loved his current job as a parts man at Regier Implement in Madrid. He married Kay Courtney in 1980 in North Platte and to this union a daughter Cicely was born. He married Lucy Reed September 28, 2002 in Hershey and to this union a son Bradley was born. Dan loved to hunt and fish and was a friend to everyone. Family was at the center of his life; and his second family was his friends at the Hershey Bar. He never knew a stranger and was always “fine”. Dan’s big smile and hardy laugh will be missed.
Dan is survived by his mother Pat of North Platte; children Cicely (Mike) Kimball of Springfield, MO, and Bradley Hengen of Hershey; grandchildren Greyson and Celise Kimball; siblings Dave (Kristi) Hengen of North Platte, Dennis (Rose) Hengen of McCook, Diana (Steve) Berg of Hastings, Donna (Terry) Douglass of Grand Island and Doug (Monica) Hengen of North Platte; 20 nieces and nephews; 5 great nieces and nephews; Dan was also a father to those who found themselves without one, Amy Kalsbeek, Ryan Nardini and Eric Nardini; as well as numerous other family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Paul; grandparents Steve and Una Hengen, and Les and Lea Fletcher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday October 28, 2016 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Reverend Bryan Ernst as Celebrant and Reverend Don Buhrman and Reverend Mark Maresh as Con-Celebrants. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery near Hershey. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, and 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Thursday at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel “Sam” R. Gilmore

Samuel “Sam” R. Gilmore, 58, of North Platte, passed away October 21, 2016 at his home. He was born May 7, 1958 to Stanley and Della (Shirley) Gilmore at Ottawa, KS. Sam grew up in the Ottawa, KS, Lincoln, NE and North Platte areas with many friends all over. He was employed at Bluesky Automotive for the last 12 years as a driver hauling cars. Sam was very talented, a “jack of all trades, master of many”. He was always lending a hand with a “project”. He survived a liver transplant and was able to have four good years before the cancer took him. He will be great missed! He is survived by his mother and step father, Della and Wes Dixon of Wellfleet; his son, Kerec Gilmore of North Platte; his daughter, Amber (Gundi) Hampton of Fayetteville, NC; three grandsons, Aschton Johnson-Gilmore, Adrian Gilmore both of North Platte and Caiden Hampton of Fayetteville, NE ; siblings, Larry (Georgia) Kelly of McCook, LeeAnn Paxton and Mary Gilmore both of North Platte, Andy Gilmore of Lincoln, Mike and Pat Gilmore both of North Platte; a step sister, Laura Haney Dixon of Denver; a step brother, Tim Dixon of Maywood; many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Thomas Edison Goff

Thomas Edison Goff, age 77, of Hershey, NE, passed away at his nephew Tom’s home on Friday, October 21, 2016.

Tom was born April 22, 1939, to Fredrick Otoe and Lynette Elizabeth Haputman Goff at Nebraska City, NE where he grew up. In 1960 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years. Following his discharge Tom returned to Nebraska. He lived in Dunbar and began his trucking career by driving for Ray Neals Trucking then drove for other companies as well. In 1989 Tom went into construction, building houses and working heavy equipment, then worked for different lumber companies. Tom loved his cigarettes, beer and fishing.

Tom is survived by his son, Daniel Goff, of St. Louis, MO; stepchildren, David and Deborah, of Missouri; sisters, Virginia (Jack) Hays, of Princeton, LA, and Marlene Murry, of Odessa, MO; brothers, Ray (Diana) Goff, of Florida, Jerry Goff, of Tempe, AZ, and Charles (Mary) Goff, of North Platte; 3 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Lynette; brothers, Arthur and Gene; sister, Donna ‘Eileen’ Peppin; and brother-in-law, Calvin Murry.

Cremation was chosen. Graveside Memorial Service with military honors will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or at the graveside. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.

George Robert ‘Bob’ Daly

George Robert ‘Bob’ Daly was born September 4, 1931, to George ‘Joe’ and Ida Winters Daly at his granddad Walter Winters’ place east of Tryon, NE. Bob departed this life on Friday, October 21, 2016, at the age of 85 years.

Bob entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and was stationed at Grandview Air Force Base in Kansas City, MO. He was selected for the Office of Special Investigations Secret Service while in the Air Force. Following his discharge in 1956, Bob returned to Nebraska to ranch and was a member of the American Legion Post #189 for 47 years.

In May 1955, Bob was in the first graduating class from McPherson High School where he earned his GED. He was married on December 21, 1955, and to this union three children were born.

Bob enjoyed his rodeo days with saddle and bareback bronc riding. He competed in Sutherland, NE, and the Kansas City area while he was in the service.

Bob loved ranching and was always available when a neighbor needed help with branding or moving cattle. He was also a state certified welder. He used this skill to mend ranching equipment and later designed a gate closer and fence anchor in his shop.

Bob is survived by his children, Becky (Bill) Clark, of Lincoln, NE, Kathy (Rick) Jones, of Onaway, MI, and Darrell (Tammy) Daly of Manton, MI; two brothers; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as other family and his friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Ida Daly; and a brother, Don Daly.

Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Miller Cemetery, near Tryon. Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the American Legion Post #189.

Phillip Elijah Brown

Phillip Elijah Brown, age 70 of North Platte, passed away at his home on Wednesday October 19, 2016.
Phillip was born on March 15, 1946 in Yuma, CO to Floyd E. and Nellie Frances (Ellis) Brown. After graduating high school in Benkelman in 1964 he married Bernice Schuller in 1975 in Oberlin, KS where they resided. Over the years he held various jobs including farm work, truck driving, was employed at a cement company in McCook, and retired from Walmart Distribution Center in North Platte. He will be remembered as a helpful person to his family and friends and as a guy with an ornery streak about him.
Phillip is survived by his children, Roy (Kathleen) Brown of Sacramento, CA, Nathan (Annie) Brown of Sacramento, CA, Patty (Warren) Schwartz of North Platte; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother Gerald (Beth Hampton) Brown of North Platte; as well as numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Bernice.

Evelyn R. Teall

Evelyn R. Teall, 90, of North Platte, passed away Oct. 20, 2016 at her home. She was born Dec. 12, 1925 to Iral W. and Francis M. (Knowles) Norris at Quincy, Michigan. She attended Litchfield High School in Michigan. Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert A. Teall on March 1, 1944 at Litchfield.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice L. Carskadon of Columbus; two sons, Robert W. Teall of North Platte and Dennis C. Teall, Sr. of Brule; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Virginia Sloan and Katheryn Meiers; brothers, James Norris and William Norris; daughter-in-law, Helen Teall; son-in-law, Clay Carskadon; nieces, Jackie Sloan and Amy Norris; and a nephew, Kenneth Norris.

Virginia L. Humphrey

Virginia L. Humphrey, 85, of North Platte, passed away Oct. 16, 2016 at her home. She was born Aug. 17, 1931 to Richard and Edna (Johnson) Humphrey at Sutherland, NE. Virginia graduated from North Platte High School with the class of “49”. She taught school in a one room classroom outside of Sutherland after graduation. Virginia also was employed as a LPN, worked at the North Platte Library and FAA at the airport. She is survived by her niece, Rachael Sabata of Omaha; nephews, Russell Ward of Georgia and Richard Ward of Florida; a great niece, Michelle Sharp of Omaha; numerous other great nieces and nephews; a cousin, Gordon Sanders of Cozad; and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Ardis (Elmer) Ward; and a nephew, Keith Ward. Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Sharon Lee Smidt

Sharon Lee Smidt, 74, of North Platte, passed away peacefully in her home on October 19.
Sharon was born in Standish, Michigan to Jim and Maurine Ross on December 20, 1941. She graduated with a teaching degree from UNL in Lincoln, Nebraska and married her one true love, Maynard, on April 14, 1964. Sharon worked as a mother and homemaker, dedicating her life to raising her three children. She attended every sporting event and never missed a parent/teacher conference. Always thinking of others, Sharon dedicated many years of her life volunteering at Great Plains Medical Center. She was a loving and devoted grandma, making each birthday and holiday special by sending her grandchildren carefully chosen care packages. Sharon was an avid reader and always enjoyed a good game of Trivia Crack and Words with Friends with her sisters, friends, and family. A Husker fan for her entire life, she enjoyed cheering on the football and volleyball team. Sharon’s life was rich as it revolved around her family, the people she loved most. Sharon leaves to cherish her loving memory, her husband, Maynard Smidt; her children, Kim Ridder of Lincoln, Kristi Murphy of Omaha and Jeff Smidt of Denver; Sisters, Margaret Honeycutt of Lincoln and Kathy Mischnick of Eagan, Minnesota; 4 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cozad, Nebraska.Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cozad Nebraska on Saturday, October 22 at 10:00 AM.
