Robert Lee Farrow, age 57 passed away September 26, 2016 at his home in North Platte.
He was born on August 18, 1959 in Laramie, WY to Betty Hermsmeier and Ingval Farrow. He attended ESU #16 School in North Platte. Upon completion of school, he attended the North Platte Opportunity Center. In 1988 he went to work for Sandhills Industries where he worked in wood fabrication until he had a serious accident in 2014. He then worked for the North Platte Opportunity Center Production Area until the time of his death. Robert was a true Nebraskan. He loved Nebraska football and was a #1 fan. He also loved John Deere tractors and anything related to John Deere. If you saw someone in a crowd wearing red and John Deere green, it’s not Christmas ~ it’s enthusiast Robert Farrow! He always had s smile and would visit with anyone and he would have an opinion about what’s right or wrong with any situation. He could start a conversation with anyone, and contribute ideas, encouragement and comfort. He loved reminiscing about his family. Robert had been an active participant in the North Platte First Baptist Church for many years and recently, since his accident, he frequently attended Harvest Christian Church. He was very social and developed friendships in both of those churches.
Robert is survived by his close friends Eric Mehl and Connie Golden; and many other friends in North Platte. His presence will be missed by many people.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, David Farrow. His mother, Betty and brother, Ingval Jr.’s whereabouts are unknown.

Marchell L. “Marcie” Schultz, 54 of North Platte was called home September 26th, peacefully at her home. Marcie was born May 2nd, 1962 in North Platte, Nebraska to Moe Hoban and Donna Alexander. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1980. Marcie was very active in 4-H and high school rodeo. She attended WNCC and MPCC graduating in 1982 with her degree in heavy equipment and welding. Marcie worked numerous jobs throughout the years, retiring from Adams Middle School as a Detention Para in May of 2016. Marcie married Tony Schultz on July 5th, 1986. She loved spending time with family and friends, racing, gardening, and spending time with her dogs. Marcie worked at many racetracks throughout the years, to help support her husband and sons hobby. The Racetrack is a very special place to her, because this is where her second family was. Survivors include husband, Tony Schultz; one daughter, Kaycie (Eric) Schultz; two sons, Zach (Tara) Schultz and Dillon (Payton) Schultz; two four legged kids, Zoey and Hoosier; mother, Marolyn Hoban; sisters, Mickie (Alan) Hartzler and Amber Hoban; brother, Andy (Elery) Hoban and many nieces and nephews; half siblings, James, Rebecca, and Diana Albrecht. She was preceded in death by her father, Moe Hoban, father in-law and mother in-law, Milford (Peanut) and Annabelle Schultz, step father, Dan Albrecht, grandparents, William and Bertha Stone, and other aunts and uncles. Dolores C. Huffman, age 87, of Tryon, passed away September 26, 2016 at Linden Estates in North Platte.
Dolores was born April 8, 1929 at her grandparent’s home in Broadwater, NE to Irvin and Stefina (Policky) Biehl. She grew up in the Sandhills where her father worked, later graduating from high school in North Platte in 1946 during which she took normal training so she could teach school. Dolores taught at a country school south of North Platte for a year before marrying the love of her life, Clayton Huffman on June 1, 1947. She then taught school for 2 years at District 26 northwest of Tryon.
Dolores was active in Helping Hand Club for many years and a charter member of Nebraska Cattlewomen. She loved her flowers and fanciwork. She enjoyed the ranch life, living there until last month. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the highlights of her life.
Dolores was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clayton; sister, Marian Sellers; and a brother-in-law, Harrison Sellers.
Survivors include daughter, Pam (Gene) Holm of Wallace; son, Bruce (Virginia) Huffman of Tryon; grandchildren, Boone (Nadene) Huffman, Nels (Stephanie) Huffman all of Chadron, Beau (Brook) Huffman of Hastings, Josie (Craig) Torske of North Platte, DoAnn (Heath) McDonald, Brian (Cassie) Holm all of Wallace, and Barbara (Justin) McBride of Meridan, WY; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Allie, Brylee, Brody, Blayden Huffman, Hunter, Hayvn and Taytum Huffman, Saffron Huffman, Rhet, Joselyn, Danica, and Shayla Torske, Coy and Sydney McDonald, Colby and Clayton Holm, and Jace and Jencie Franzen.

Alfred Swanson, 86, of North Platte, passed away on September 24, 2016 at Great Plains Health. He was born October, 23 1929 in Omaha, NE to Minnie and Anton Elmer Swanson. The family lived in Gothenburg , NE before moving to North Platte just prior to Al entering grade school. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1947.
After high school Al attended and graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in business. During his college years, he developed a lifelong love for the mountains and a passion for skiing. He skied every year into his early 80s, sometimes more than 100 days per year in retirement.
After college, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean conflict but was fortunate to be stationed in Austria and Italy, where he was part of a survey crew making maps. Upon his discharge from the Army, Al returned to North Platte where he was employed with Platte Valley Public Power (later NPPD). He retired from NPPD in 1995.
In 1961, Al married Anita Knisely, and they were married for 52 years before Anita’s death in 2013. They made their home and raised their family in a house Al constructed in 1967 and lived in until his death.
In retirement, Al and Anita enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends and splitting time between their home in North Platte, cabin at Lake Maloney and a home in Winter Park, CO. Al was known for his dry wit and strong family values. He was a caring and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Anita, sister Alice Mae, and his parents.

He is survived by son James (Tracy) of Golden CO, daughter Kay Irvine (Andy) of Fraser, CO, sister Betty Lou Udouch and nephew Alan Udouch of Johnstown, PA, grandsons Jack and Nathan Swanson of Golden, and sister-in-law Delores Knisely and niece Susan Knisely, both of Lincoln.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 29th at the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Bernadette A. Bales, age 71 of North Platte, passed away September 22, 2016 at her home. She was born February 10, 1945 at Valentine to Thomas and Betty (Auhl) McQuade. She grew up in Valentine and attended Valentine High School. She later moved to Gering where she met Carl “Buzz” Bales and they were married on April 5, 1968. Mr. Bales served in the United States Air Force which led them to be located in Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, the Azores, and Oklahoma. Following his death, Bernadette moved to North Platte in 1989 to be near her family. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, gardening, and was known for her delicious jelly and green beans. She was a devoted mother and loving grandmother. Survivors include her daughter, Vurlee Toomey, son, Eddie (Jennifer) Bales, grandchildren, Thomas (Alicia Perkins) Bales, Ryan Toomey, Samantha and Carli Bales, brother, Tim (Jan) McQuade, sister, Yvonne (Don) Connery, sister-in-law, Mary McQuade, brother-in-law, Larry Schaffert, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a close friend, Linda (Don) Davis. Memorial services will be 10:30 am Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. A private family inurnment will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. Woodford “Woody” Donald Baugher, passed away in North Platte, NE on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at the age of 65.
Woody was born June 27, 1951 in Quincy, IL to Edmund and Kathleen (Pettit) Baugher. The Baughers lived in Payson, IL where Woody grew up and developed his love for the land and farming. He graduated from Christian Brothers High School in Quincy, IL.
In the mid 90s Woody moved west to be closer to his children and grandchildren who were in Nebraska at the time. He finally settled in the sand hills and stayed there, loving the open space. He cherished spending time with his family and being outdoors. Woody was an avid reader, sportsman, and an NRA member.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents Kathleen and Edmund Baugher; and brother-in-law Thomas Venverloth.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Prudence Baugher; his children, Heather Singleton of Fulton, MO, Matthew (Mandy) Baugher of Eden, UT and Holly Baugher of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Lindsey (Jake) Tanner, Marah Franklin, and Lainey Franklin all of Fulton, MO, and William Baugher of Eden, UT; great grandchild Beau Tanner of Fulton, MO; sisters and brothers, Mary Venverloth, Patti (Dan) Wallace, Harley (Theresa) Baugher, Anna Baugher, Cathi Baugher and Lisa Baugher.

On Thursday, September 22, 2016, Viola M. Schultz, of North Platte, NE, passed away at Great Plains Health after turning 85 years old. Viola is together again with her husband, Floyd, who died just 3 weeks ago.

Viola was born September 20, 1931, to James Herbert and Viola Ruth Keslar Spidell at St. Joseph, MO. She lived in Missouri until 1946 when the family moved to Nebraska.

On April 25, 1947, Viola was united in marriage to the love of her life, Floyd Lawrence Schultz, at the North Platte Methodist Church. They lived in North Platte, had two sons and two daughters, and enjoyed over 67 years of marriage. On January 7, 1958, Floyd and Viola were baptized into the Church of Christ and had been members ever since.

When the children were young, Viola was active in their school activities, served on the PTA and was involved in Scouts and 4-H. In 1970 she received her GED then went on to take courses at Kearney State College and North Platte Community College. She eventually earned her certification as a Nurse’s Assistant then worked for the Home Health Department at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

Viola had been a Notary since 1988, was a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and a member of the Eagles Auxiliary, National Association of Nursing Assistants and National Arbor Day Foundation. She found much enjoyment in life. She was a Husker Football fan, liked collecting things, doing arts and crafts, and considered herself a scrapbook enthusiast. Viola especially loved antiques, studying genealogy and quilting. She sewed over 100 quilts which she proudly gave away as gifts. No matter what project she was involved in, her family always came first; she loved them more than words could ever express.

She is survived by her son, Gary Schultz, of North Platte; grandchildren, Skip, Salena, Travis, Trampus, Jake, Marc, Ronda and Carma; five great-granddaughters, Brittney, Madison, Trinity, Jayna and Livia; sister, Elizabeth Lovell, of Knoxville, TN; brother, Raymond (Louise) McKernan, of St. Joseph, MO; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

Along with her husband, Floyd, Viola was preceded in death by their two daughters, Cynthia and Mindy Sue; a son, Jay; her parents, James and Viola Spidell; sisters, Jane McHarness and Rose and Francis Spidell; brother, Robert Spidell; granddaughter, Amanda Diltz; a grandson, Michael J. Schultz; and great-granddaughter, Misty K. Schultz.

Graveside Funeral Service will be 3 p.m. Monday, September 26, 2016, in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens with her nephew, Larry Henry, officiating. Thomas Wayne Brown, age 90, of Hershey, NE, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

Tom, the oldest of five children, was born June 11, 1926, to Marion James and Mary Esther Applegate Brown at Sutherland, NE, and grew up on the family farm south of Sutherland. He attended country school during the Great Depression so getting back and forth was a lot of work. The family eventually moved to a new dryland farm closer to town and school, and with perseverance and determination, survived the drought and depression.

After graduating from 8th grade in a class of two, Tom moved in with his grandparents at the Applegate farm so he could easily attend Sutherland High School. By 1941 the rest of the Brown family had moved to this farm as well. Tom graduated from high school in 1943 then joined the U.S. Army in 1945, serving as an M.P. for nearly two years. During the late 1940’s, Tom attended the University of Nebraska. While in Lincoln he worked for a funeral home, driving the ambulance, and worked a couple summers as a combine operator during the wheat harvest from Canada to Oklahoma.

In June 1950 Tom graduated from college then returned to the Hershey area to begin farming for himself and did so his entire life. He loved farming and soil conservation, and promoted the National Farmer Organization (NFO).

On March 26, 1954, Tom was united in marriage to Ruth Lorraine Carlson in Denver, CO. They lived on the Brown farm and had five children during their 62 years of marriage.

Tom was an active in the Hershey community, serving on the School Board, belonging to the Antique Tractor Club and was announcer for the Tractor Pull at the Fall Festival. He was a member of Maria Lutheran Church, charter member and Past President of the Hershey Lions Club, and member of the Sierra Club, which he also served as Lincoln County and State President. He was also member of the Order of the Golden Star, Theta XI Fraternity and Alpha Epsilon 200 from which he received his 50 year pin in 1993. Tom was Treasurer for Nebraska Holistic Resource Management and the Hershey Cooperative Telephone Company, and was active in many conservation organizations. In 1996 he was awarded the Keith Neville Democratic Memorial Award.

Aside from his work on the farm, Tom had a passion for researching the family history. He was able to trace his family roots prior to the War of Independence and to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Because of his genealogical efforts, October 29, 1997, was declared “Tom Brown Day” in Butler County, KY.

Tom leaves behind his wife, Ruth, of Hershey; children, Amy (Steven) Fleecs, of Sutherland, and Eric (Jacqueline) Brown and Scot (Susie) Brown, of Hershey; daughter-in-law, Tammy Brown, of Sutherland; 10 grandchildren, Matthew (Rebecca) Fleecs, Amber (Brian) Cross, Rachel (Matthew) Person, Jordan Brown, Chelsea Brown, Erin Brown, Erica Brown, Logan Brown, Skyler Brown and Chloe Brown; 6 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert ‘Bob’ (Della) Brown, of Hershey and James (Kay) Brown, of Plattsmouth, NE; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, David Douglas, and son, John Thomas; parents, Marion and Mary; and sisters, Georgia Martin and Lucille Say.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 26, 2016, at Maria Lutheran Church in Hershey with Pastor Erin Dunlavy officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Sutherland Riverview Cemetery. Bernie Lee “Slim” Hebblethwaite, age 84 of North Platte passed away Wednesday September 21, 2016 at Great Plains Health.
Bernie was born on August 21, 1932 at Mounty Springs near Licking, MO to Roy James and Eula Alma (Sawyer) Hebblethwaite. Mounty Springs was a gathering place where neighbors came with their wagons to fill their water barrels. He was baptized about the age of twelve into the Methodist Church at Sherrill Creek near Licking. At that age he helped build Shipp Chapel near his home and attended Shipp School across the road. In 1942 the family moved to St. Louis. After a short time there they returned to Licking. In 1948 at the age of sixteen Bernie returned to St. Louis. In 1952 the Korean War was going on and Bernie was soon going to be drafted into the army so he decided to see some country before that happened. He ended up scooping wheat for the harvest crews in Kansas. When he reached Wallace, NE he got a job with the Lester Hanson Construction Company. He lived with Lester and Muriel Hanson until he was drafted into the army on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1952. He served until October 29, 1954 and returned to Wallace after his discharge. He met his future wife, Janet Louise Cooper of Wellfleet, NE at a dance. The couple was married on April 22, 1959 at St. Williams Catholic Church in Wellfleet. They built a house in 1978 and have been married fifty seven years as of this date. He started a masonry business in 1967 and bricked many homes and a few churches in a wide surrounding area. His son Larry joined him in the business in 1989 and Bernie retired in 2010. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, a 45 year member of the Eagles, joining in 1971, and a member of the Bricklayers Masonry Union for 53 years. As a pastime he put together puzzles, enjoyed playing pool and horseshoes, and returned to the Hebblethwaite Reunion every year in Missouri.
Bernie is survived by his wife Janet of North Platte; sons Larry (Vonnie) Hebblethwaite of North Platte and Scott (Sabina) Hebblethwaite of Paxton; daughters Carol (Mike) Ripple of North Platte, Kathy (Craig) Godfrey of North Platte, Peggy (Bob) Cox of Council Bluffs, IA; 11 grandchildren Steven (Traci) Ripple, Jessica (Wayne) Kulhanek, Melissa (Cody) Monzon, Joe and Jacob Godfrey, Adam and Elizabeth Cox, Treyton, Hayley, Tanner and Tristen Hebblethwaite; 3 great granddaughters Kira Strum, Sarah and Adalynn Monzon; and a brother Jerry Hebblethwaite of Palm Desert, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Eula Hebblethwaite; brothers Vernon and Daniel Hebblethwaite; sisters Norma Day and Erma King; and brothers-in-law Wayne King, William Harper and Sam Day.

Roberto “Bob” Sandoval, Sr., 77, of North Platte, passed away September 20, 2016 at his home. He was born December 11, 1938 to Luis and Juana (Ramos) Sandoval at Laredo, TX. In 1962, he was united in marriage to Martha Lopez in Michigan. Roberto worked for Mid-States Equipment Company constructing grain elevators in various states. They came to North Platte in 1979 when the North Platte grain elevator was constructed, this being his last project with the company. He later worked for Brewer Concrete until 1997, when encouraged by Raymond Brewer, he owned and operated Sandoval Concrete along with his family. He was beloved by all his family and his memory will be cherished by many. His family includes, his wife; Martha of North Platte, children; Roberto Sandoval, Jr., Juana Chapa, Jose Luis Sandoval, and Rene Sandoval all of Dallas TX, Norma (Chris) Trejo of Garden City KS, Nora Salas, Ricardo Sandoval, Ramiro Sandoval, and Robert (Marcie) Sandoval all of North Platte, 30 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, three sisters; Carmen (Ramon) Martinez, Alicia (Luis) Vargas, and Maria Theresa Arriaga, a brother; Arturo (Sylvia) Sandoval, and his four legged companion, Musky. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Jorge Luis Sandoval, brother, Luis Giberto Sandoval, granddaughters, Alyssa Sandoval and Isabell Chapa, and great-grandson, Xavier Nieto.
