Mary Jane Turner

Mary Jane Turner, age 96, of Omaha, NE, formerly of North Platte, NE, died Tuesday, August 23, 2016, in Omaha.

Mary was born December 21, 1919, to John and Bessie Jones in Mason City, IA.

On September 24, 1941, Mary was united in marriage to John Russell Turner in Grand Island, NE. Since John was an air traffic controller, the couple lived in Hawaii, Alaska, California, Minnesota, Utah and Nevada, before settling in North Platte in 1954. They were married for over 52 years when John passed away in 1994.

Mary lived in North Platte for 60 years. She had worked at First National Bank and was a member of P.E.O. She was an avid golfer, bridge player, and a world traveler. In 2014 Mary moved to Omaha to be closer to her family.

She is survived by her sons, Douglas Scott (Cathie) Turner and David Alan (Mindy) Turner, of Omaha; daughter, Terry (Steve) Williams, of Ashland, NE; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Turner, of Spokane, WA; eight grandkids; 11 great-grandkids, with another on the way; as well as other family.

Along with her husband, John, Mary was preceded in death by their son, Randall James; and parents, John and Bessie Jones.

Graveside Funeral Service will be 2:30 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established to the North Platte Good Fellows Shoe Fund.

Robert Eugene “Bob” Gay

Robert Eugene “Bob” Gay, 86, of North Platte passed away August 21, 2016 at Centennial Park Retirement Village. He was born on December 11, 1929 in Sharon Springs, Kansas to Cecil and Iva (McAllister) Gay.
Bob graduated high school in Ogden, Utah. He entered the United States Navy, serving in San Diego and Hawaii. On November 16, 1950 he married Arlene Mickelson in Hawaii. The couple made their home in Utah until 1970, when Bob was transferred with the Union Pacific Railroad to North Platte where he was a District General Foreman, retiring in 1987.
Bob was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, was a member of the Eagles and Moose, he enjoyed snow birding in Texas in the winter. Bob and Arlene enjoyed their life together and had many friends through the years.
Survivors include children, Joel (Laura) Gay of North Platte, and Lori (David) Mussman of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Andrew Gay of North Platte, Audrey Gay of Kearney, Tony (Kayla) Mussman of Ewing, NE, and Kyle Mussman of Augusta, GA; great-grandchildren, Thane Mussman and Korra Mussman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife of 58 years, Arlene.

E. Dean Niedan

E. Dean Niedan, age 76, of North Platte, NE, left his earthly home on Sunday, August 21, 2016, after a long struggle with Multiple Myeloma.

Dean, as he was commonly known, was born the third of four children to Henry and Irene Niedan on November 8, 1939, at the family farm homestead, located 12 miles Southeast of Midland, SD. He attended rural schools, graduating from Murdo High School in 1957 then attended the University of South Dakota. Here he met the love of his life, Jean Lange, from Yankton, SD. They were married on July 6, 1958, in Yankton and to this union three daughters, Terri, Cindi and Julie, were born.

Dean was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Midland, SD and was a devout Missouri Synod Lutheran with a steadfast faith in God. He was deeply involved as a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and was one of the founders of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, serving on numerous boards and committees of both churches.

First and foremost, Dean’s passion was his family, longtime friends, and farming. He enjoyed being outdoors, and liked taking elk hunting trips to Wyoming and fishing trips to South Dakota and Canada.

Dean began his insurance and finance career with Auto Bankers in Rapid City, SD then as a lending officer at Northwestern National Bank in Luverne, MN. In 1964, he accepted a position with McDonald State Bank in North Platte. Dean and his brother, Ken, were instrumental in the charter of Hershey State Bank in 1968. Later, they acquired the Farmers State Bank in Wallace, NE. They also chartered the American State Savings Company and American Security Bank in North Platte and American State Bank (now AmFirst Bank) in McCook, NE. Consolidating their interests, the American State Bank was sold. Ken retained ownership of the Hershey State Bank and Dean retained ownership of Farmers State Bank. Dean and his wife, Jean, established the American Agency and American Mortgage Company in North Platte (which was recently sold). Over his 50+ years of banking, Dean received various accolades and awards with the most important of these being the respect and commitment of his customers.

Throughout Dean’s life, he served on various civic organizations including the North Platte City Council, past President and member of the North Platte Rotary Club, past President and member of the North Platte Chamber of Commerce, and board member of the Nebraska Bankers Mortgage Association board and 50 year member of the Nebraska Bankers Association. He was always very active in promoting North Platte, in particular the business community.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Irene Niedan and his sister, Carolyn Berg.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean, of 58 years; three daughters, Terri (Gerry) Krolikowski, of Lincoln, Cindi Hill, of North Platte and Julie (Bill) Serritella, of Bristol WI; grandchildren, Tiffany (Scott) Schendt, of Gretna, NE, Melissa Smidt, of Lincoln, Ashley (Justin) Cleveland and Brandon Hill, of North Platte and Shelby and Dean Serritella, of Bristol, WI; great-grandchildren, Alex, Avery and Aiden Schendt, Jacy, Logan, and Landon Cleveland, and Brynley Bottorf; two brothers Ken (Connie) Niedan, of Hershey and Gordon (Judy) Niedan, of Sioux Falls, SD; and brothers-in-law Dick Berg, of Littleton, CO, and Roger (Jackie) Lange, of Longmont, CO. Dean is also a cherished uncle to his nephews, nieces and his many close lifetime friends.

Dean’s Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2016, in North Platte at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church with Pastor Bob Deardoff officiating. A private family burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

The casket will be closed. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be given to Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church or the Callahan Cancer Center in North Platte.

Carol Shearer

Carol Shearer, 74, of North Platte, passed away August 20, 2016, at her home. She was born on June 10, 1942, in Ogallala to George and Gertrude (Harris) Cross. Carol graduated from Arthur High School in 1960. She was united in marriage to Donald Lee Shearer in 1972 at Grant and moved to Brady that same year. She lived in Brady for 17 years where they owned and operated Stuckey’s and moved to North Platte for the past 26 years. She was also employed by Hehnke’s in Paxton, Sixth Street, Country General and The Dollar Store, retiring in 2011. She was a member of the Eagles Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a stepson, Doug Shearer; granddaughter, Erin Shearer; and niece, Karen Kramer. She is survived by daughter, Julie (Mike) Snider of North Platte; stepson, Dondi (Ronda) Shearer of Kearney; brothers, Jay (Janet) Cross of Menlo Park, California and Gary (Judy) Cross of Ogallala; sisters, Ann (Bob) Kramer of North Platte and Marge (Leonard) Sherman of Loveland, Colorado; granddaughters, Heather (Jordan Warner) Shearer of Cozad, Mandy (Benny Torrez) Snider of Twin Falls, Idaho and Brooke Shearer of Kearney; grandsons, Devin (Brittany Pochop) Dunbar and Drew Dunbar both of North Platte; great grandchildren, Dylan, Elaina and Jaxon of North Platte and Twin Falls, Idaho; also many nieces and nephews. Michael Anthony Wolken

Michael Anthony Wolken, age 63 of Sutherland, passed away on Friday August 19, 2016 in Lincoln, NE after a 5 ½ year battle with cancer, surrounded by family.
Mike was born on December 6, 1952 in Paola, KS to Ralph and Shirley (Weiland) Wolken. After high school he served in the Navy from July of 1972 thru July of 1978. He married Laura Lea Rose at St. Leonard’s Catholic Church in Madison, NE on June 16, 1972. After being honorably discharged from the Navy he worked for 31 years for NPPD at CNS and GGS. Mike was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte and a past member of the Lions Club in Hershey. He loved his family, always attending his children’s and grandchildren’s events. His favorite passion was fishing with his highlight being the annual sons & brothers fishing trip.
Mike is survived by his wife Laura of 44 years, children Jermi (Jenni) Wolken of Donnellson, IA, Shane Wolken of Hershey, NE, Brian (Lisa) Wolken of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren Jessica, Jacob, Sydney, MacKenzie, Bradley and Rory; parents Ralph and Shirley Wolken of Stanton, NE; siblings Doug (Lisa) Wolken of Madison, NE, Gary (Karen) Wolken of Meadow Grove, NE, Eugene (Paula) Wolken of Madison, NE, Randy (Kim) Wolken of Plainview, NE, Daniel (Janet) Wolken of Madison, NE; sisters-in-laws Lorraine (Peter) Goldstein of Colorado Springs, CO, Linda (Ken) Strasburg of Albuquerque, NM, Lynn (Tom) Roginski of Aurora, CO; as well as 22 nieces and nephews, other extended family members and friends.

Esther L. (Walker) Sellers, age 91 of Maywood, passed away August 18, 2016 at Great Plains Health. She was born November 11, 1924 at Thornberg, NE to Raymond and Mae (Ruppert) Walker. Esther lived most of her life in the Wellfleet and Maywood area. She was united in marriage to Lawrence “Mutt” Sellers on May 18, 1946. To this union five children were born. She worked as a cook at the Maywood Public School for more than 20 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Lawerence, sister; Veda (Loren) Baxter, nephew; Duane Owens, sister and brother in-laws; Lois (Loren) Hall, Vernon (Shirley) Sellers, Ercil (Vera) Sellers, Harrison (Marion) Sellers, Donna Coykendall, and Stanley Sellers, son-in-law; James Kummer, daughter-in-law; Stacy Sellers, and granddaughter; Stacy Sellers. Clayton Hydo Sr., 81, of North Platte, passed away at his home on August 19, 2016. He was born April 15, 1935 at Wolbach, Nebraska to Clayton and Theresa (Myres) Barr. He attended school in Grand Island. He enlisted in the Army on November 4, 1952 and was stationed in Korea. He was united in marriage to Doris Emmons on April 8, 1955 at Lebanon, KS. Clayton was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad and retired in 2000. He was a body repair man and painter. He was an Eagles Club Trustee and a volunteer for the VFW. Clayton was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John (Frances) Hydo; sisters, Angela Rezac, Mildred Robinson and Joanne Cram. He is survived by his wife, Doris; son, Clayton L. Jr. (Nancy) Hydo; daughter, Joleen Hydo Bedwell; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials are suggested to The Senior Center or the Alzheimer’s Walk. Vern Allan Haase

Vern Allan Haase, age 79, of North Platte, NE, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, in North Platte.

Vern was born in 1936, to Dean Ritter and Mable Carolyn Diener Haase in North Platte where he grew up. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1954 then went on to receive his Associate of Arts Degree in Business Administration from McCook Community College in 1956. Vern returned to North Platte and went to work for Mac’s Hardware until 1959 when he joined the U.S. Army.

Following his discharge in 1962, Vern returned to his position at Mac’s Hardware, which eventually became Ace Hardware. Vern was co-owner of Ace Hardware until 2005 when the store was sold and he retired.

He was a member of the North Platte J.C.’s, B.P.O. Elk’s #985 and P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion. Vern enjoyed spending his time fishing at the lake, reading, building miniature steam engines and model trains. Vern was also talented in music. In high school, he received honors for playing the drums and later was lead guitarist with a local country music band, Hadley Barrett and the Westerners.

Vern is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Haase and Julie Haase, both of Omaha, NE; sister, Shirley Turner, of North Platte; niece, Angela Turner, of Grand Island, NE; nephews, Steven (Debbie) Turner, of Frisco, CO, and Timothy Turner, of North Platte; and other family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Carolyn.

Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. The casket will be closed the day of the service. Shirley Ann White

Shirley Ann White, 81, of North Platte passed away August 18, 2016 at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born on November 19, 1934 in McCook, Nebraska to Edward Otis and Delsie (Simmons) Dike. Shirley grew up in McCook, graduating from McCook High School in 1952. On November 18, 1956 she married Raymond Clinton White in Brady, NE, and celebrated 50 years of marriage before Raymond’s death in 2007. The couple lived in North Platte where Shirley worked at the North Platte Telegraph, retiring in 1990 after 17 years of service. She also worked at Sitel and Advantage Direct.
Shirley was a founding member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her family was the center of her life, especially her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook who never knew a stranger.
Survivors include her children, James (Lynn) Dike of Manassas, VA, Charlotte Jackson of North Platte, Cathy (Shorty) Kramer of Stapleton, Susan (Mick Hamel) Little, Lee (Bill) Durand, and Jennifer (Rob) Drake all of North Platte; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, Dennis (Gloria) Dike of Sacramento, CA; daughter-in-law, Elisa White of Minnesota; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends; special friends, Sharon Neal, Carolyn Pease, and Darlene Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Edward and infant Fredrick; sisters, Verla Hutchinson, Peggy Jeffers, Helen Flowers, Joanne Moore, and Ona Shepherd; and brothers, Murray and Jerry.
