Carolyn “Jo” Long, age 74, of Tryon began her eternal life on June 7, 2016 in North Platte. She was born December 5, 1941 to D.M. “Red” and Ernestine “Johnnie” (Elmore) Mann in North Platte. She lived on the home ranch, which she loved, all her life. She was baptized at the Eclipse Church in 1950. Jo attended grade school at District #10 in McPherson County and the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture, in Curtis, from 1955-1957. She then attended North Platte Senior High and graduated with the class of 1959, and continued on to beauty school in North Platte. She then married her high school sweetheart, R. L. “Bob” Long on November 15, 1959, at the First Lutheran Church in North Platte. To this union, they were blessed with four fabulous daughters, Becky, Carmen, Bridget and Kelly.
Highlights of her life were her girls, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always active in following her girls and grandkids to their school activities, rodeos or sporting events. She won a horse as the winner of the Sutherland Rodeo Junior Queen Contest. Her talent for decorating at weddings was in demand by many friends over the years, of which she enjoyed immensely. Jo’s rodeo involvement included the NHSRA rodeo queen coordinator for a number of years. She always looked forward to their yearly trip to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, NV, where she watched a little rodeo and gambled a lot, usually winning enough to pay for their trip. She was very involved in helping with the cattle, hogs and haying on the ranch. She worked at Hoover’s Jewelry for many years before becoming a full time grandma, of which she cherished every minute.
Her circle of worry includes her husband of 56 years, Bob of Tryon, daughters Becky Dailey of Arnold, Carmen Eimers (fiancé Russ Reinsch) of Shickley, Bridget Lange of North Platte, and Kelly (Mark) Ward of Tryon; grandchildren Brock (Robin) Dailey, Lindy (Della) Dailey all of Arnold, Stephanie (Kyle) Konken of Beaver Crossing, Paula Eimers (fiancé Taylor Skala), Kiersten and Tatum Lange, all of North Platte, and Kandace, Mason, and Klaire Ward, all of Tryon; great grandchildren Kora and Bo Dailey, and Paityn and Colter Dailey all of Arnold, Ayden and Camden Konken of Beaver Crossing; one loving sister Molly (Ronnie) Woodward of Broken Bow; sisters-in-law Betty (Don) Haws and Patricia Long, all of North Platte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents “Red and “Johnnie” Mann, father and mother-in-law Bob and Elinor Long, and son-in-law Alan Dailey.

Harold Charles ‘Hessie’ Jochum, age 85, of Sutherland, NE, died Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE, following an accident at home.

Hessie was born April 15, 1931, to John Theodore and Katherine Anne Pelster Jochum at Sutherland where he lived most of his life. Hessie grew up on the family farm southwest of Sutherland and attended District 19 Sunshine Country School until the 7th grade when he went to Sutherland Public School.

Hessie farmed the family farm until joining the U.S. Army in January 1952. He completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO then went to Ft. Kilmer in New Jersey for more schooling. In July, Hessie was sent to Mannheim, Germany for the next 18 months. Following his discharge in January 1954, Hessie returned to Sutherland and took over the family farm from his father.

On June 25, 1952, Hessie was united in marriage to Colleen Anne Dawson in Sutherland and they made their home on the farm. After the family farm was sold in 1966, they purchased a house in town, and Hessie started an independent trucking business where he hauled grain. In 1980 he bought the Forden Service Station and Tank Wagon then sold it in 1983 and went back to the trucking business, hauling grain and fertilizer.

Hessie was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a 63 year member of American Legion Otto V. Johnson Post #208. He enjoyed working on small engines, restoring Cushman Motor Scooters, gardening, and watching sports. He also liked watching stock car races and his son, Scott, doing motocross racing and in his younger days enjoyed dancing and bowling. Hessie always enjoyed drinking coffee at the Co-op.

Hessie especially loved his family and enjoyed teaching his kids and many of their friends to water-ski. In 2015 Hessie was an honored guest on the Veterans’ Honor Flight which allowed him and fellow veterans to visit Arlington National Cemetery and all the war memorials in Washington, D.C.

Hessie is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Colleen, of Sutherland; their children, Mike (Nancy) Jochum, of Beatrice, Tom (LeAnn) Jochum, of Axtell, NE, Nancy James, of Gering, NE, Katherine (Darin) Kipp, of Haxtun, CO, and Scott (Brenda) Jochum, of Kearney; 13 grandchildren, Jared (Julie) Jochum, Benjamin (Michelle) Jochum, Nathaniel (Missy) Jochum, Micaela (Brian) Vrtiska, Julie Jochum, Rebecca Jochum, John Robert Jochum, Derek James, Sarah (Cody) Chikos, Brandon Ogier, Zach Jochum, Katelynn Jochum, and Sabra Kipp; eight great-grandchildren, Hunter, Emma, Olivia, Micah, Maddison, Colton, Karly and Kiera; sisters-in-law, Arlene Jochum, of Sutherland and Marie Jochum, of Eugene, OR; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Jochum; parents, John and Katherine; brothers Don, Walter, Lawrence ‘Bud’, Joseph and John ‘Ed’ Jochum; an infant sister, Bernadette; and grandson, Eric James.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore and with family greeting friends from 5 to 6 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland followed by a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Celebrant Father Jim Novakowski. Mary Jean Howard, 94 of North Platte, formerly of Gering passed away June 6, 2016 at Linden Court. Jean was born January 17, 1922 at Daykin, NE to Dr. Hall and Elva (Ruach) Humphrey. She graduated from Daykin High School and attended the University of NE where she met her husband Arthur “Rex” Howard.
Jean and Rex were married on February 12, 1943. They lived in Gering Valley where they raised their two children, Rex Humphrey and Linda Jean.
Jean helped Rex on the farm until Linda went off to college when she then began working at the Gering Public Library (16 years) eventually becoming head librarian and helping build and move into the new library.
She was active in the First United Methodist Women’s Society and Chapter P.E.O.
Jena and Rex loved being at their cabin in the Laramie Mountains, traveling to Canada and Alaska, dancing at the Elks, attending Nebraska Football games, and watching their grandkids grow up.
Survivors include her husband Rex of North Platte; children, Rex H. (Nancy) Howard of Richardson, TX, and Linda (Marvin) Rousey of North Platte; sister-in-law, Mary Finney of Muskatine, IA; grandchildren, Kevin (Suzanne) Howard of Fort Worth, TX, Camille (Scott) Hughes of Richardson, TX, Scott (Sarah) Howard of Waukesha, WI, Pam (Jess) Helgoth of Burwell, Kim (Scott) Goodwin of Kilgore, and Jodi (John) Miller of North Platte; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Janet Katheryne Reed, 78, of North Platte, passed away June 5, 2016 in Lincoln, NE at Bryan Health Medical Center East. She was born July 17, 1937 to Howard and Katheryne (Matthews) Weekly in North Platte. She attended school in North Platte and graduated from Nebraska Teachers College at Kearney with a Teaching Degree. She taught at Meadowlawns, Maxwell, Osgood and Platte Valley Christian. She was involved with 4-H for 10 years in the “What Knot Extension Club” and Summer Church Camp in the music area during Vacation Bible School. She was very crafty, loving to knit sweaters for family members. She also enjoyed camping with her grandkids. She is survived by her husband, Deryl of North Platte; children, Laurie (Frank) Griffin of Bethany, OK, Mark (Koleen) Stone of Ogalalla, Deryl (Jodi) Reed Jr. of Ord, and Kalynn (Stanley) Key of Burwell; a brother, William (Pam) Weekly of Lincoln; grandchildren, Chadd Griffin, Kathleen Griffin, Jacob Dowdy, Mikel Dowdey, Jerry Patterson, Lance Reed, Cody Reed, Breanna Reed, Skyler Key and Ashton Key; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Shelly Stone. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2016 at Harvest Christian Fellowship with Pastor Jacob Rahrig officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Albert L. (Lyle) Moore, 87, of Stapleton died June 4, 2016 at his home. He was born June 26, 1928 at Finchville, NE to John R. and Urah (Beaver) Moore. He attended school at Gandy. Lyle served in the United States Army at Fr. Bliss and also served in England for 1 ½ years.
On December 31, 1952 he married Edna Blagdon Mitchell. They made their home on a farm south of Stapleton. Lyle was an agent for the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for 50 years. He enjoyed many years of hunting in Nebraska and Colorado.
Survivors are step-daughters, Lila Engleman, Luella (Robert) Joedeman, and Shirley Mitchell all of Stapleton; grandchildren, Connie (Dan) Paxton of Lincoln, Brenda Coon (Jason Myers) of Arnold, Pam (Tim) Smith of North Platte, Michael (Malinda) Engleman of Stapleton, Linda (Joel) Wentworth of Emmet, NE, Kenneth (Carol) Joedeman of Stapleton, Robert (Kristi) Joedeman of Gurley, NE Bryan (Sue) Joedeman of Litchfield, MN, Lori (Darryl) Busenitz of Burns, KS, Julie (Kenley) Udd of Mills, Jerri (David) Loewer of Burden, KS, Penni (Tim) Shaw of Bassett, NE, Debi (Shane) Sundermann of Lincoln, Jan (Peter) Tighe of Broomfield, CO, Kris (Jenni) Joedeman of Stapleton, Kari Joedeman of Gandy, and Nikki (Lamar) Jackson of Coon Rapids, MN; sisters-in-law, Wanda Moore of Ogallala, and Marilyn Moore of North Platte; 59 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 37 years, Edna; brothers, Samuel (Lenora), John, and Ray; sisters, Margaret (Ira) Cumpston, Helen (Melvin) Waits, Zelma Moore, Audrey (Larry) Bierma, Betty (Edwin) Schaeffer, and an infant sister Bertha; and a son-in-law, Charles Engleman.

Leann Sue McKim, 49, of Aurora, Colorado, formerly of North Platte, passed away June 3, 2016.
She was born July 2, 1966 in North Platte, NE and is the beloved daughter of John A (Jack) and Elaine Gloe McKim. She died June 3, 2016 in Denver, CO. She attended local schools and graduated from North Platte High School in 1984. She furthered her education at UNK before beginning her 30 year career in the telecommunications industry in Denver, Colorado.

Her family life was rich. Leann embraced the time she spent with her parents and brother, Larry, at her home and theirs. She oftentimes involved them in her projects but always took the leadership position! She devoted hours to making beautiful floral arrangements for every holiday and home decor and her vision and creativity defied description. Her pieces were exhibited in many Denver businesses.

Leann’s heart held fast to her precious Schnauzer, Bella. They were inseparable and loved each other unconditionally.

She was fiercely independent and quick witted with an infectious laugh; she had fast friendships and was known in her neighborhood for her kindness and caring.

Leann was preceded in death by her Father, Jack. She is survived by mother, Gloe McKim; brother, Larry McKim; sister, Linda Wilson; nephew Casey and niece Alexa.

Leann lived a full and rewarding life and left us too soon.
She loved greatly and was greatly loved.

Patricia Ann (O’Brien) Schwenk passed away peacefully in her place of residence on May 31st in Henderson, Nebraska at the age of 77.
Patricia (Pat) was born on September 30, 1938, to John and Elva (Stingley) O’Brien in Wallace, Nebraska. She graduated from Wallace High School in 1956. She married Elmer “Jr” Schwenk on September 27, 1957. The couple’s only daughter, Danella, was born January 12, 1960. Pat enjoyed quilting, embroidery, and painting pottery. Pat and Jr resided in North Platte until his death in April of 2015, at which time Pat relocated to Henderson to be closer to family.
Pat was preceded in death by her father and mother, John and Elva (Stingley) O’Brien; her husband, Jr Schwenk; daughter, Danella Engen; Son-in-law, Wayne Engen; two brothers, Jack and Danny O’Brien; three brothers-in-law, Gene, Robert, and Paul Schwenk; and one sister-in-law, Lila Schwenk.
She is survived by two granddaughters, Lane Callaghan, of Central City and Emily (Kyle) Norman, of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Andrew Bryant, Addysen Bryant, Jakson Callaghan, Jase Callaghan, Kaiden Norman and Lexie Norman; a sister-in-law, Cora Ann Wood; two brothers-in-law, Ed Schwenk and Garland Wood; four sisters-in-law, Barb Schwenk, Alene O’Brien, Barb O’Brien, and Liz Schwenk; and a number of nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
