Myra M. Satterfield

Myra M. Satterfield, 86, of North Platte died September 11, 2015 at Great Plains Health. She was born February 11, 1929, in Ogallala, NE to Murl M. and Viola (Dierks) Maupin. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1946 and went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. On June 26, 1951, Myra was united in marriage to Richard W. Satterfield in North Platte. She was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior serving in many capacities. She was the first woman elected to the North Platte School Board in 1975 and served for 12 years. Countless North Platte children learned to swim through the Red Cross summer swimming program under Myra’s leadership as Director. She was a dedicated volunteer with an energetic commitment to her children’s activities as well as community organizations focused on service. Myra took great pleasure it the time spent with her bookclub and church Altar Guild. She will be remembered for her love and steadfast support of her family, the friendships she cherished, and especially her many years of work for Dr. Barrett Klemm and Dr. Steve Creal. She will be missed dearly. Survivors include her two daughters, Julie Satterfield (Robert Girouard) of Bethesda, MD, and Dr. Kimberly Krull of El Dorado, KS; two sons, Dr. John (Anna) Satterfield of Southington, CT., and Dr. Thomas (Dr. Traci) Satterfield of Spokane, WA.; six grandchildren, Leisa Krull, John Krull, Alessia, Ryan, Hudson and Griffin Satterfield; son-in-law Dr. Steve Krull; sisters-in-law, Linda Greer and Jackie Johnson and their families. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2015, at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey S. F. Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. The casket will not be open at the church. Maxine Locke

Maxine Locke, age 88, of Maxwell, died September 12, 2015 at her daughter’s home at Maxwell. She was born on June 1, 1927 at Ridgeway, MO as the 13th child of John and Estella (Parrish) Beeson. Maxine grew up in Missouri and moved with her parents and 7 siblings to Chillicothe, Mo in 1929 and graduated from Chillicothe High School. After graduation, Maxine began her career with the telephone company in Missouri. Maxine married Walter David Kinzler on August 7, 1949 in Chillicothe. To this union, 3 daughters, were born; Trudy, Tonda, and Tracy. The couple lived in various places before settling in North Platte where Maxine worked for the telephone company as an operator.
After retiring from the Telephone Company, Maxine moved to Lewellen, NE. There she married Jim Locke on May 1990 in Lewellen, NE. She worked at Marshalltown Instruments in Oshkosh, and the Lisco Fish Farm. Maxine attended Harvest Christian Fellowship, was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, enjoyed fishing, quilting, gardening and canning. She enjoyed being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughters, Tonda (Lonnie) Gosnell, and Tracy (Bob) Heessel , all of Maxwell; four grandchildren, Brandon (Ane) Gosnell, Londa (Andy) Seamann, all of Maxwell, Chelsea (Chris) Schmeeckle of Lincoln, and Kadin (Roxie) Heessel of Maxwell; a step grandson, Nathan Heessel of Maxwell; 3 great-grandchildren, Marlee and Baylee Seamann and Andrew Schmeeckle; and 2 step-grandchildren, Wyatt and Owen Heessel; a brother Glen Beeson of Texas, and numerous other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Glen French; a granddaughter, Rhonna French, and 6 brothers; and 5 sisters.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday September 15, 2015 at the Harvest Christian Fellowship with Pastor Jacob Rahrig officiating. Burial will be at Plainview Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home, which is charge of arrangements.

David King Rice, Jr.

david-riceDavid King Rice, Jr., 54, of Brady, NE, died at the Denver Health Medical Center on Wednesday, September 9, 2015, after being struck by a motor vehicle in Brady.

David was born February 11, 1961, to David King Rice, Sr. and Joyce May Shevory Rice at Norfolk, MA. He grew up in Mirror Lake, Norfolk, MA. After his schooling, David worked construction in the New England area.

In 1983 David married Lorain Thompson and they later divorced. He was later married to Theresa Rawding. In the summer of 2005, David and his family moved to Farnam, NE where he continued his work as a carpenter.

David was a Christian man who enjoyed the outdoors and God’s creations. He liked to write poetry and listen to music. David also enjoyed photography, art, wood working and electronics, and was willing to share his knowledge with family and friends.

He is survived by his children, Jessica Rice (fiancé, Jeremy Woodward), Christian (Samantha) Rice, Lawrence Rice III (fiancée, Jenn Hatch) and their mother, Lorain Thompson Rice, all of Attleboro, MA; son, Joseph Rice, of Wareham, MA, and daughter, Angela Rice, and their mother, Theresa Rawding, both of Farnam, NE; sisters, Jullianne Able, of Pratt, KS, and Lea Albee, of Franklin, MA; brothers, Everett John Rice, of Pratt, KS, and Lawrence Dana Rice II, of Needham, MA; five grandchildren, Dylan Rice, Lawrence Rice IV, Kristian Simoneau, Gabriel Simoneau and Isaiah Woodward; his girlfriend, Diane Holbrook, of Wakeeney, KS; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

David was preceded in death by his son, David King Rice III; and parents, Joyce and David, Sr.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. David’s cremains will be buried next to his son at the Farnam Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed atodeanchapel.com or prior to the service on Wednesday.

Karen Hunn

Karen Hunn, age 80 of Tryon passed away September 9, 2015 at Great Plains Health. She was born April 24, 1935 in Elsie, NE to David S and Audrey (Doran) McClintock. They moved from the Elsie area to McPherson County in 1938. In 1940 due to Karen’s health they moved from Tryon to Boise, Idaho on their doctor’s recommendation where they lived until 1945 when they moved back to Tryon where she spent the rest of her life.
Karen graduated from McPherson County High School in 1953 and began normal training to become a teacher. She taught several years before earning her BA degree from Kearney State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in 1953 and taught until 1975, at which time she became the County Superintendent of Schools for McPherson County. A position she held until she retired in 1997. During the time she was Superintendent of Schools she also did a brief stint as the Counties Welfare Director.
On June 20, 1954 she married Paul L. Hunn in North Platte. To this union two sons were born, Von and David.
Education of every kind was an important part of Karen’s life. She herself was a lifelong learner. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, needle point, cooking, and her goal was always to master whatever it was she endeavored to do. She was always very happy to tell anyone listening, that she and Paul had read through their Bible seven times and were starting on number eight in an endeavor to know God better.
Karen loved learning but her passion was for her husband, her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul; her in-laws, B.D. and Blanche Hunn; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Hunn) Miller and Lois Hunn; brothers-in-law, Karl Hunn, Al Miler, and Dennis Barner.
Survivors include her sons, Von (Connie) Hunn of Garden City, KS and David (Lorie) Hunn of Chadron, NE; grandchildren, Amy , Keith, Sheyenne (Mike) Sandstorm and Slade; sisters-in-law, Rose Barner and Shirley Miller; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and other family members.

Ralph E. Cochran

Ralph E. Cochran, 86, of North Platte, passed away September 8, 2015 at Linden Court. He was born August 14, 1929 in North Platte to Levi and Mary (Sivits) Cochran. He attended country school before attending Stapleton High School. Ralph worked on the family farm; he married Marjorie Founds January 17, 1951 in North Platte. Ralph entered the United States Army soon after and served in Atlanta, GA during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, the couple moved back to North Platte where he hired out on the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman. After being laid off Ralph went to work at the Ely-Hoppe Lumber Yard. He stayed with them as they became Hoppe Lumber, then Carhart Lumber, retiring in 1991.
Ralph loved hunting, fishing, coyote hunting, cutting wood, and rock hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with and hunting and fishing with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was very musical, being able to play various instruments.
Ralph was a member of the Eagles, Moose, American Legion and the DAV.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of North Platte; children, Donna Jean (Rick) Anderson of North Platte, James E. (Linda) Cochran of North Platte, and Judy I. (Phil) Landfried of North Platte; grandchildren, Dyan (Dominic) Camtelmi of Castle Rock, CO, James Cochran Jr. of Denver, CO, Matt (Spring) Landfried of North Platte, Jennifer (Chris) Woodward of North Platte, Jeffrey (Ashley) Cochran of North Platte, and Amy (Nate) Hawks of North Platte; 17 great-grandchildren; honorary family, Nate and Carrie Handy of Dighton, KS; sisters, Dorothy Cobb of North Platte, Bonnie (Ernie) Collins of North Platte, and Barbara Alexander of Loup City; numerous other family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Michael Harris; brothers, Harold Cochran, William “Bill” Cochran, and Jess Cochran; sisters, Alice Blevins, Betty Becker and Lois Haddock; and a son-in-law, Dan Andersen.

Charles E. Koester

Charles E. Koester, age 86 of North Platte, passed away September 7, 2015. He was born September 16, 1928 at Wellfleet, NE to Frederick and Mabel (Dunn) Koester. Charles served in the US Army as a corporal during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in 1952. He later was united in marriage to Marjorie Reuter on May 25, 1957 at Council Bluffs, IA. Charles was employed by the State of Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for 36 years retiring in 1992 as a wildlife manager. He attended the Bethel Church and was a member of the American Legion. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards and woodworking. Survivors include his daughter, Susan (Stan) Bruce of North Platte, son, Mike (Mitzi) Reuter of Scottsdale, AZ, sister, Annetta Savage of Mesa, AZ, brother-in-law, Bob Winchell of North Platte, grandchildren, Shana (Larry) McClellen of Lincoln, NE, Shane (Kelli) Bruce of Phoenix, AZ, Angela (Adam) Brown of Surprise, AZ, Heidi Rinaldo of Peoria, AZ great-grandchildren, Ashley (McClellen) Bluford, Logan (Stephenie), Lucas, Ethan (Courtney), Elijah, and Caedmon McClellen, Joette (Eric) Sargent, Kylee and Cale Bruce, Gianna, Daniel and Zoe Rinaldo, and Maya Smith, great-great-grandchildren, Haley Thomas, Myles and Jaxon Peters, Kai Sargent, Brody and Gabriel Bluford, Brooklyn Schuetz and other relatives. Shirley ‘Ruth’ Frohman

Shirley-FrohmanShirley “Ruth” Frohman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015.

She was born eighty years ago to Tell and Julia (Bristol) Wade at Valentine. Ruth grew up on her parent’s ranch just north of the Nebraska border in South Dakota. Youngest of six children, three boys and three girls.

Ruth is survived by sister Margaret and husband Hugh and sister Bernice and husband Dick and sister-in-law Irene.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Joe, Les, and Howard and Sisters-in-law Idella and Lois.

After school at Hastings and Chadron colleges, Ruth taught country school. She met and married Jim Frohman fifty-eight years ago. Together they ran a small drive-in restaurant in Cozad before moving to North Platte in 1963. Ruth and Jim raised three children and along the way, Ruth worked as a teacher, manager of World of Wonder Book Store, Activities manager at Pawnee Retirement Hotel and longtime employee for Nebraska State Jobs Training.

Ruth loved her family, extended family and friends. With energy that few people possess, Ruth lived everyday as if it were her last. Her family joked that she wrote enough letters to family and friends that paper and stamps were budgeted like a utility. She wrote a weekly e-mail letter to her extensive list of followers which she called the Thursday Special. Her wisdom, humor and love will be missed. Her yearly Saint Patrick’s Day bread and butter party is legendary. A women ahead of her time, Ruth found time to be the best wife and mother they could have wished for. She gave her heart and soul and time to so many people. Always putting her needs and wants last.

Members of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church since 1963, she also helped start Little League Baseball in North Platte. Her love of baseball was lifelong with the last program she watched being the Little League World Series. She was also involved very early with the North Platte Swim Team. No, she didn’t swim, her oldest son and daughter did, but she was the best back floater you ever saw!

Ruth was a member of the Lincoln County Historical Society and volunteered to help many local fundraisers and charities. Ruth was an avid reader and member of the Nebraska Writers Guild. She started and organized the annual Writers Guild Meeting during Nebraskaland Days.

She will be missed greatly by surviving family and friends including her husband, Jim, son Jim, daughter Julie and husband Kelly, son Jan and his wife Ann, grandchildren Janae and husband Jason their children Cheyenne and Logan, grandchildren Krista and husband John, Derek, Elizabeth, and Emily. She is survived by sisters-in-laws Jean, Marion, Alta, Kay, and Lois, brothers-in-laws Leroy and Keil. She was preceded in death by sisters-in-law Judy, Helen and Shelby and brothers-in-law Larry, Bob, Fred, Rick, Bob, and Wendel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Saturday, September 12, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery. Cremation was chosen, those wishing to sign the memorial book may do so from 9am to 5pm Tuesday through Friday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

Randy Ray Leaf

randy-leafRandy Ray Leaf, 54, of North Platte, NE, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2015, at Great Plains Health in North Platte.

Randy was born September 16, 1960, to Harlan Allan and Laura Jane Jepsen Leaf at North Platte where he grew up. Randy graduated from North Platte High School in 1978 then attended DeVry Institute of Technology. He later worked construction as a framer and did H-Vac for heating contractors before hiring on with the Union Pacific Railroad. Randy was working with the railroad as an Electrician at the time of his death.

Randy liked to ride his Harley, play Keno, camp, and watch Nebraska football and the Denver Broncos. He also enjoyed his family and friends. Randy was a member of the Eagles Aires #2839 and Moose Lodge #551.

Survivors include his brothers, Michael (Robin) Leaf, of Fort Collins, CO, and Gary (Shari) Leaf, of North Platte; two nieces, Amanda Leaf, of Fort Collins and Amy Leaf, of Edison, NJ; nephew, Matthew Leaf, of Rapid City, SD; great-nephew, Nolan, of Fort Collins; uncle, Gordon (Joann) Leaf, of Divide, CO; aunts, Beverly Kelly and Arlene Jepsen, of North Platte and Helen Leaf, of Kearney, NE; and numerous cousins and other family.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Harlan and Laura; and grandparents, Milton and Sallie Jepsen and Allan and Nancy Leaf.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2015, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Chaplain Gary Smith officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursdayat Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com. The family has established a memorial.
