Doris Jeanne Turner

Doris Jeanne Turner, 91, of North Platte, NE, was taken home by her heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at Great Plains Health in North Platte.

Doris was born January 20, 1924, to William Bryan and Gladys Jane Smith Knobel at Julesburg, CO. She graduated from Fairbury High School in 1941 and later taught school in Jefferson County.

On June 17, 1942 Doris married Robert Benjamin Turner at Marysville, KS. In 1949 they moved to North Platte where they raised their family and 26 foster children. Doris worked as a finance officer for St. Mary’s Hospital for several years and volunteered at the Thrift Connection as well as other places for many years. She was a member of the North Platte Berean Church and attended the Salvation Army Bible Study. Doris enjoyed gardening, loved to read and was a good artist.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Marvin) Bartels of North Platte; two sons, Michael Turner, of Scottsbluff, NE and Dennis (Penny) Turner, of Villa Rica, GA; two daughter-in-laws, Paula Turner, of Hayes, VA and Pam Turner, of Wichita, KS; brothers, Harold (Nell) Knobel, of Pueblo, CO and Leland (Susan) Knobel, of Lincoln, NE; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a great great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, other family and her friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; two sons, David W. and Robert L. Turner; her infant daughter, Judith Jean Turner; parents, William and Gladys Knobel; a sister, Gertrude Rolland; and three brothers, Daryl, James and John Knobel.

Doris donated her body to science. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 24, 2015, at the Berean Church with Pastor John Stone officiating. Barbara Ann Olivigni

Barbara Ann Olivigni, 84, of Hickman, NE, died Monday, June 8 at her home.

Mrs. Olivigni was born August 25, 1930 at the family farm near Elsie, NE to Bryan and Minnie (Glunz) McGahan. She was the sixth of eight children. She attended school in the Elsie area until 1945. She then joined her sister Mary in Boston where she completed her junior year at St. Mary’s Catholic School. In 1946, she returned to Nebraska and graduated from St. Pat’s High School in North Platte at the age of 16.

On January 22, 1951 Barb married John Olivigni at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Elsie, NE. The newlyweds returned to John’s hometown of Boston, MA for several months before settling in Elsie, NE. They also lived in Arapahoe, NE and Damar, KS before moving to Lewellen, NE in 1964. After a lifetime in western Nebraska, Barb then moved to Hickman in June of 2013 to be closer to her children.

Barb enjoyed reading, putting puzzles together, playing Bingo and solving crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed gardening and she was an avid garage saler and never met a bargain she didn’t like. She was blessed with good gambling skills and enjoyed pickle cards, Keno, and trips to Deadwood. She retired from Marshalltown Instruments in Oshkosh, NE after 17 years as a quality control inspector. She then worked part-time at the Oregon Trail Trading Post in Lewellen, NE for several years before retiring for a second time.

Barb was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Parish in Oshkosh, NE.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Karen and Larry Davison of Lincoln, NE, Lorna and Steve Triplett of Dumfries, VA, and Lisa Olivigni of Crete, NE;
One son and daughter-in-law, Fran and Lynne Olivigni of Barnhart, MO; one sister Margaret Berger of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers and two sisters.

Vernon D. Allen

Vernon D. Allen, age 89, of North Platte, died June 6, 2015 at Great Plains Health. He was born on March 6, 1926 in Petersburg, NE to Theodore “Ted” and Edna (Paulsen) Allen.
Vernon graduated from Petersburg High School before entering the Army Air Corp in 1944. He served in North Africa, then to the European Theatres where he served as a photographer on B17’s and B29’s. After his discharge, Vernon returned to Petersburg where he married Bonnie Rogers on March 17, 1947 in Smith Center, KS. The couple moved to Omaha where Vernon attended the Universal Trade School where he studied refrigeration.
After the electricification of the rural areas, he worked as an electrician and in the refrigeration business. He later worked in the family grocery business, doing appliance repair work out of the back. He then opened Allen’s TV and Appliance in Petersburg.
In 1972, the family moved to North Platte where Vernon worked at Welty’s TV and Rrepair for several years before opening Allen’s TV and Appliance in North Platte. He and Bonnie continued to run the store until Bonnie passed away in 1989. Vernon married Gloria Egger in February 1990. They made their home in North Platte, but enjoyed going to Texas every winter.
Vernon was a member of the Episcopal Church of our Savior, the American Legion, the Sertoma Club, served on the Petersburg School Board, and was on the Board of Directors at the Paradise Park Retirement Community. He enjoyed camping and boating, traveling with his family, reading, and home remodeling.
Survivors include his 5 children, Terri (Stan) Timm of Omaha, Ken (Cheryl) Allen of Castle Rock, CO, Bob (Karen) Allen of North Platte, Randy Allen of North Platte, and Merri (John) Brownell of Omaha; 2 step-children, Tara (Bob) Lockman of Cheyenne, WY, and Rodd (Sally) Egger of Aurora, CO; 3 sisters, LaVonne Faust of Omaha, Sharlene Bogs of Dyer, Indiana, and Marcella (Russ) Sharples of Tempe, AZ; 14 grandchildren, Mike (Colleen) Timm, Mark (Megan) Timm, Matt (Katie) Timm, Kristin (Aaron) Shockey, John (Christina) Brownell, Eryn Brownell, Jill Brownell, Charlie (Serrita) Allen, Cody (Keri) Allen, Sonja (Kevin) Pearson, Amy Allen, Cammy (D.J.) Smith, Ken (Dawn) Allen, Matt (Diane) Allen ; 3 step grandchildren, Nick Lockman, Cortney Lockman, Alexandria Egger; and 37 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Fred (Mary Ann) Fangman of Petersburg, NE; his faithful canine companion, Misty; and numerous other family members and friends. Vernon D. Allen, age 89, of North Platte, died June 6, 2015 at Great Plains Health.

Services will be 11:00 am Tuesday June 9, 2015 at the Episcopal Church of our Savior with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Nelson officiating. Burial will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.

Robert Lloyd ‘Bob’ Spady

bob-spadyRobert Lloyd ‘Bob’ Spady, 71, of North Platte, NE, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ.

Bob was born January 30, 1944, to Fred and Mabel Denton Spady at Hastings, NE where he grew up. By the age of 14, Bob began working at his father’s car dealership thus beginning his love for cars. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1962 and continued working at Fred Spady Motors as Parts Manager. In 1967 Bob went to work for his brother at Jerry Spady Pontiac Cadillac GMC in Hastings as General Manager. He purchased Rich Watson Buick Pontiac GMC in North Platte in 1989 and had owned it ever since.

On July 31, 1965, Bob married Caroline Catherine ‘Candy’ Spotanski in Grand Island, NE and made their home in Hastings. Along with his business, Bob’s passions were his boats and his classic cars, the louder and faster the better.

Bob was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was actively involved in the North Platte community, serving on various boards in different positions. He was past president and a current member of the Board of Directors for the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, NEBRASKAland Days past president and board member, North Platte Chamber of Commerce/DEVCO past Board of Directors, Nebraska Motor Vehicle Licensing Board, past president and board member for the North Platte Ambassadors, and a Miss Nebraska Pageant sponsor. Bob was a member of the North Platte New Car Dealers and Nebraska New Car Dealers Association.

Bob was a life member of Tri City Street Rods and belonged to several other clubs which included the University of Nebraska Wheel Club, the North Platte Noon Rotary Club, Chamber Ambassadors, and was a member of numerous other organizations. In 2008 Bob received the Time Life Magazine Automobile Dealer of the Year Award for Nebraska and was a Paul Harris Award Winner.

He is survived by his wife, Candy, and their daughters, Gretchen (Joe) Swift and Rachel Spady, all of North Platte; two grandchildren, Jacob and Gabriella Swift; two sisters, Marlene Skeen, of Lakewood, CO and Pam Castleberry, of Lakehead, CA; brothers, Jerry and Paul Spady, both of Florida, Vic (Sharon) Spady, of Hastings, and Rick (Patti) Spady, of Beatrice, NE; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mabel; and a niece, Samantha Spady.

Cremation was chosen. A Christian Wake Service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with Celebrant Father Jim Novakowski. Mary Nila, age 85 of North Platte, passed away Thursday June 4, 2015 at Centennial Park Nursing Home.
Mary was born on August 23, 1929 in North Platte, NE to Rosalio Charles and Petra (Torres) Hernandez. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School and married Juan Porfirio Nila on January 31, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. To this union eight children were born, Peggy, Natalie, George, Julie, Russell, Markos, Sarah, and Feliciana. Mary loved her grandchildren and took part in raising Lee Anna, Juan, Joaquinn, Clifton and Robyn. She worked as a housekeeper for Judge Dietrich, was an elevator operator at the Pawnee Hotel, she also worked at TRW in Ogallala for 14 years and for the North Platte Public Schools for 16 years. Mary’s favorite pastime activities included creating paper dolls, embroidering, reading and canning vegetables from her garden. She will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her children Peggy (Fred) Mata of North Platte, George Nila of North Platte, Julie Govan of Tacoma, WA, Russell Nila of North Platte, Markos (Kim) Nila of North Platte, Sarah Nila of Ft. Collins, CO, and Feliciana Nila of North Platte; 20 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Juan; infant daughter Natalie; grandson Louis Govan; and siblings Paul Deluna, Martin Deluna, Jason Garcia, Cecil Hernandez, Enos Hernandez, and Jenny Ponce.

Phyllis M Lewis, age 78, of North Platte passed away June 3, 2015 at Linden Court. She was born on August 3, 1936 in Kearney, Nebraska to Joseph and Mary (Domandle) Miller.
Phyllis graduated from Kearney High School. While living in Kearney she worked at the Good Samaritan Hospital. She married Gary Lewis on February 11, 1956. The couple lived in Kearney, Lexington, Broken Bow, and settled in North Platte. They built Cody Land Mobile Home Court and have owned and operated it since. Phyllis was a very active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the PTA. She enjoyed bowling and was passionate about helping at the church. Phyllis loved following her grandchildren’s activities throughout the years and very much enjoyed the countless hours visiting and traveling with her sister Carolyn. She kept up a relationship with the Buffalo PTA, and had much fun socializing and attending birthday dinners. Her faith, family, and friends were the center of her life.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Rick (Ronda) Lewis and Randy (Donna) Lewis all of North Platte; grandchildren, Michelle (Jeremy) Weigel of Lincoln, Amy (Matt) McMurtry of Elkhorn, Terra (Heath) Vejraska of Papillion and Tanner (Rachel)Lewis of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kaylee, Taryn, Austin, Logan, Ty, Karsyn, and Jack; and a sister, Carolyn Zwibecker of Aurora, CO.
She will be reunited in Heaven with her parents; her husband, Gary; brother-in-law and sister -in –law, Hank and Marge Hinrichsen.

Rosendo Q. ‘Ross’ Duran

Rosendo Q. ‘Ross’ Duran, Jr., 72, of North Platte, NE, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, surrounded by his family after battling 4 types of cancer since 2012.

Ross was born July 15, 1942, to Rosendo G., Sr. and Ramona A. Quintana Duran at Alamogordo, NM and grew up in Los Cruces, NM where he attended school. Ross joined the New Mexico National Guard and served as a Communications Specialist for 11 years. He later worked various jobs before he began his career with the railroad. In 1971 Ross hired on with the Southern Pacific Railroad in Sacramento, CA as a fireman and oiler then worked the next 21 years as an electrician. He transferred to Denver, CO and continued working as an electrician for the Denver Rio Grande Railroad then moved to North Platte with the Union Pacific Railroad. After six more years and a good career, Ross retired in 2002.

Regardless of which railroad he was with, Ross had a strong dedication to feed his railroad family and continued to do so into retirement. Ross was affectionately known as “Burrito Man” by those he worked with. Along with his work on the railroad, he liked to golf and go bowling. He was a member of Iron Eagle Golf Club and Eagles Aeries #2839.

On August 15, 1970, Ross married Esther Rivera in Reno, NV and to this union they had four children together. Ross loved his family and will be remember for his ever present smile and soft spoken voice.

Ross leaves behind his wife of nearly 45 years, Esther, of North Platte; his children, Paul Rivera, of Pueblo, CO, Michael Duran, of Silver City, NM, and Esther Rivera, Roxanne Duran, adopted children, Tommy (Alice) Vieyra, Michelle West and Crynna Swearingen, all of North Platte, and a granddaughter who they raised since birth, Brandy Duran Babcock, of Kearney, NE. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tom Jenkins, of Dallas, TX, and George Jenkins, of Victorville, CA; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and other family; and his many friends including Charlie and Bruce.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, Rosendo, Sr. and Ramona; his beautiful daughter, Ramona Duran; infant sister, Virginia Duran; brothers, Charlie, Nativadad and Sonny Duran; and two half-brothers.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 11am Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Reverend Fr. Miguel Herrera Guevara

Reverend Fr. Miguel Herrera Guevara, 85 of North Platte passed away May 31, 2015 at Great Plains Health. He was born in Mesilla, New Mexico on September 29, 1929 to Jose’ and Juana (Herrera) Guevara.
Miguel grew up and attended elementary school in Mesilla. He entered the United States Army in 1947, serving until 1951. He was eligible for discharge but was retained and served in combat during the Korean War where he was awarded the combat bronze star. Upon his discharge he opened his own restaurant, and later worked in Kansas on television towers before deciding to enter the seminary. It was in 1956 that he entered St. John Vianney Seminary in Elkhorn, NE. It was there where he finished high school and two years of college. He went on from there to Conception, MO to seminary training at Immaculate Conception Seminary where he was ordained a priest. On May 26, 1967 Father Miguel was ordained to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Grand Island, NE in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in El Paso, TX. His accomplishments in the priesthood were many including Assistant Pastor at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, North Platte, Diocesan Migrant Program, Assistant Pastor of St. Mary’s Cathedral , Grand Island, chairman of City Human Rights Commission, Associate Pastor of Holy Rosary, Alliance, Assistant Pastor of St. Patrick in Eddyville, St. John Capistran in Amherst, St. Mary in Oconto and St. Boniface in Callaway, Pastor of St. Theresa in Mitchell, Sacred Heart in Lyman and St. Ann in Morrill. He was appointed Associate Director of the Office of Hispanic Ministry; residence at St. Patrick’s in North Platte and celebrated his 25th anniversary of ordination on May 24, 1992 in North Platte, retiring from active ministry on July 1, 1995.
He will be remembered most of all as a very loving priest. He exhibited a heart for the poor and loved the joy that the children brought to the church.
Survivors include his siblings, Moses Guevara of Tulare, CA, Geronimo (Jerrry) Guevara of Tulare, CA, Tom and Esther Ruiz of Sunnyvale, CA, Benny Guevara of San Jose, CA, Richard Guevara of Tracy, CA, Tony Guevara of Yountville, Ca, Mary Lou Reyes of Madera, CA, Gilbert Guevara of San Jose, CA, Connie Guevara of Fresno, Ca, and Dora Martinez of Stockton, CA.
