Lucy Marie Lucas

Lucy Marie Lucas, age 95 of York, NE passed away Wednesday December 12, 2018 at York General Hearthstone Skilled Nursing Facility.

Lucy was born May 9, 1923 in Groom, TX.  She was the daughter of R.J. and Anne Bohr.  She moved with her family to Cherryvale, KS and then Independence, KS.  In 1943 she married J. Norman Lucas and they settled in Holdrege in 1954 where they remained until 2012 when Lucy moved into the Hearthstone.  Norman preceded her in death in 2001.  Lucy enjoyed her role as wife, mother, grandmother and good neighbor.  She was particularly fond of babies and little kids.  She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed dancing and doing crafts with her husband.  The caregivers at the Hearthstone were very special to her.

Lucy is survived by her children, Nancy (Bob) Slocum of Kearney, Don (Kay) Lucas of North Platte, Mike (Beth) Lucas of York and Mary (Terry) Gugle of Andale, KS; grandchildren Dr. Jennifer Summers of Gibbon, Ty (Jackie) Lucas of North Platte, Annie (Tom) Remmenga of Lincoln, Josh (Grace) Lucas of West Richland, WA, Kristina (Terry) Fesler of Eagle, ID and Matt (Nicole) Gugle of Andale, KS; Lucy loved 16 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Raphel J. and Annie Gertrude (Hermesmeyer) Bohr; and husband J. Norman Lucas.  Lucy was one of nine children of which two sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.  Nicholas (Karen) Bohr, her surviving brother, resides in Independence, KS, along with sisters-in-law, Helen Bohr, Juanita Bohr, Carol Bohr, Becky Bohr, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Christian Wake Services will be 9:45 a.m. Tuesday December 18, 2018, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30, both at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte, with the Reverend Vidya Sagar Arikotla as Celebrant.  Burial will follow at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday December 17, 2018 at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Betty Lee Smallfield

Betty Lee Smallfield, 78, of North Platte passed away December 10, 2018 at the North Platte Care Center.

Betty was born on March 18, 1940 in Ely, Nevada to Josef and Rose Blatnick.  Betty graduated from Ely High School.  She moved to Hollywood, then to San Francisco.  On April 28, 1962 she married Robert “Bob” Smallfield in Ely, NV.  The couple lived in Ely, moving to Lompoc, CA, Long Beach, and Salt Lake City, UT for Bob’s job.  They moved to Red Bluff, CA, and then to North Platte until Bob retired.  The two traveled together for many years, wintering in southern Texas and coming back to Nebraska for the summers.

Betty was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.  She enjoyed TV and diet Dr. Pepper, embroidery and hook rugging.  She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother.

Survivors include her husband, Bob of North Platte; son, Robert “Bob” Smallfield of North Platte; daughter-in-law, Peggy Rosenberg of North Platte; granddaughter, Sabrina Rosenberg of North Platte; sister, Mary Lou Elicegia of Reno, NV; numerous other family members; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, June Erickson, and Josephine Bryant; and three brothers, Frank, Ed, and Robert.

Sherri Lynn Peer

Sherri Lynn Peer, age 48, of Hershey, passed away at home surrounded by
her family on Monday, December 10, 2018.

Sherri was born August 7, 1970, to Lester and Mary Helen (Nolan) Lauhead
in Springfield, Missouri.  She grew up and attended school in Monett,
Missouri.  After her schooling Sherri married Robert Cooper and they had
a son, Brandon, before divorcing.

On January 8, 1999, Sherri married William Stephen Peer in North Platte
where they lived before moving to Hershey.  Sherri had worked as a
janitor for the North Platte Public Schools and Flying J.

She was a member of the New Life Church in North Platte where she
enjoyed attending services.  Sherri liked listening to country music,
playing Bingo with her mom and others, and especially loved her cats.

She was preceded in death by her mom, Mary Helen Lauhead.

Sherri is survived by her husband, Steve, of Hershey; father, Lester
Lauhead, of North Platte; son, Brandon Cooper, of Exetor, Missouri;
brother, Terry Ferrell, of Monett, Missouri; sisters, Cindy Holcomb, of
Alabama and Darla Pearcey, of Arkansas; sisters-in-law, Ramona Peer, of
Cheyenne, Wyoming and Mary Diane Peer, of Hershey; nieces, Sammantha
(Dustin) Herbaugh and Elizabeth Peer, of Arizona; as well as other
family members.

Cremation was chosen.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on
Friday, December 14, 2018, at the New Life Church with Pastor Dave

Majorie Alice Gamble

Marjorie Alice Gamble, 100, of North Platte passed away December 9, 2018 at the Sutherland Care Center.  Marjorie was born on October 19, 1918 in Brady to Benton and Estella (Pits) Miller.

Marjorie graduated form Maxwell High School in 1936.  She then attended Kearney Teachers College and received her teaching certificate.  She taught at several country schools and the last school, Pleasant View School is where she met Edward Gamble, the two were married April 9, 1944 at her parent’s house in Maxwell.  The couple lived on the family farm and ranch south of North Platte on Jack Morrow Flats.

Marjorie was a member of the Maxwell 1st Baptist Church where she had been a Sunday School Teacher.  She will be remembered kindly for her great cooking, feeding many silage crews through the years.  Her pies were family favorites!

Survivors include her children, Jolene Gilsthorpe of South Carolina, Jeanne (Dean) Barney of North Carolina, Tom (Tanda) Gamble, and Kathie Harvey all of North Platte; numerous grand, great, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edward in 1975; and siblings, Dorothy, Beulah, Lloyd, Art, and Cal.

Visitation will be  Friday, December 14, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the 1st Baptist Church in Maxwell with  Reverend Tim Lyzenga, Dean Barney, and Reverend Scott Almon officiating.  She will be laid to rest with her husband Edward at the Miriam Cemetery.  A Reception will be held at the church following the burial.

Raymond L. Yates

Raymond L. Yates, 82, of North Platte, passed away December 7, 2018 at Great Plains Health.

Raymond was born on December 16, 1935 to Benjamin and Cora (McNiel) Yates at North Platte. He attended North Platte Public Schools. He married Karen Mathers in 1954 and to this union five children were born. Raymond worked on his parents  ranch southeast of North Platte. In 1956 a tornado destroyed the home place.  He purchased the neighboring farm and moved his family. He raised livestock, also farming corn and wheat. Raymond also sold corn for Cargill. He and Karen enjoyed traveling to many different states and countries while in the seed corn business.

Raymond retired and moved to town in 1987. Raymond liked to gamble and play bingo. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Eagles Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Walter Joe Yates; a brother, Ben Joe Yates and sisters, Glady Hiatt and Mildred Grosh.

Raymond is survived by sons, Ben Yates and Ray Yates; daughters, Marilyn Furge  and Linda Cumming; grandchildren, Michael (Cristi) Cumming, Tammy (Shawn) Williams, Justin Cumming and Aaron Furge; sisters, Helen Higginbotham, Florence L. Peterson and Louise (Bob) Houghtelling; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other family members.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Penny Sue Melstrom

Penny Sue Melstrom, age 66, of Lexington, formerly of North Platte, died
at the Lexington Regional Health Center on Saturday, December 1, 2018.

Penny was born on October 19, 1952, at Goodland, Kansas to Vilas and
Madelyn (Gernhart) Claar.  As a child the family lived in several
states.  Penny later earned her GED from Ogallala High School.

Penny was married to Darrell Melstrom, they had a son and later
divorced.  She married again and that relationship also ended in
divorce.  After living in Ogallala for a number of years, Penny and her
son moved to North Platte in 1982.  She eventually moved to Lexington
due to her health.  She had worked as a waitress in Ogallala, North
Platte and Colorado and was a past member of the Eagles Auxiliary #2839.

She is survived by her sisters, Margie Cranmer, of North Platte and
Orena and husband, Ken Hammeke, of Larned, Kansas; brother, Ray and
wife, Myrva Claar, of Battlefield, Missouri; grandson, Bryan and wife,
Tiffany Melstrom, of North Platte; great-granddaughter, Zowie Melstrom;
niece, Keri and husband, Bryan Lynn; nephew, Jeff Hammeke; her caregiver
and best friend, Linda Norman, of Brady; and other family.

Penny was preceded in death by her son, Gregory “M&M” Melstrom, her
father, Vilas Claar; and mother, Madelyn Jarvis.

Cremation was chosen and inurnment will be in the North Platte

Barbara Elaine Rector

Barbara Elaine Rector, of North Platte, passed away at the age of 86, on
Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at the North Platte Care Center surrounded by
her family.

Barbara was born February 8, 1932, to William Dean and Margaret Della
(Ison) Jackson at Dickens, Nebraska.  She grew up in Colorado, living in
Platner and Sterling, then North Platte where she attended high school.

On February 21, 1950, Barbara was united in marriage to Jerry Rector.
The couple made their home in North Platte where Barbara worked at Tim’s
Meat Market and Doris’ Tavern and was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church.

The most important thing to Barbara was her family and friends who she
loved dearly.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry, children, Jody (Duane) Fleck,
Bruce Rector, Marcia (Scott) Davis, Robert (Adrienne) Rector, and and
sister, Velma (Don) Ryan, all of North Platte; grandchildren, Carrie
(Eric) Lienemann, Lisa (Wayne) Bortner, April (John) Baade, Lori (Jason)
Hansen, Katy (Bob) Denny, Eric Rector, Josh (Katie) Rector, Megan
Rector, Emily (Steven) Perez and Jonathan Rector; great-grandchildren,
Jason, Makenzie, Kyler, Riley, Zoey, Emma, Darby, Colbie, Kennedyanne,
Isabella, Davis, Karlee, Clara, Brode, Deakota, Taylor, Kiara, Lilly,
Jaylee, Jameson and Honor; great great-granddaughter, Arianna; as well
as numerous nieces, nephews and other family and her friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret
Jackson; brother, Jim Jackson; granddaughter, Leslie Davis; and
great-granddaughter, Abby Rector.

Cremation was chosen.  A Celebration of Life will be at 3 p.m. on
Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore led
by Deacon Michael Davis.  Inurnment will be at a later date.  The

Jack DeWayne Hartgrave

Jack DeWayne Hartgrave, 82, of North Platte, passed away at Centennial
Park Retirement Home on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

Jack was born in Thedford, Nebraska on June 21, 1936, to William Robert
and Mina (Parker) Hartgrave.  He grew up on the Hartgrave ranch near
Elsmere until he joined the U.S. Navy in January 1955. Jack served
during the Korean Conflict and was stationed on the U.S.S. Higbee and
later the U.S.S. Shenandoah.

Following his discharge in 1959, Jack moved to Wyoming and started
roofing until he was injured in a tar roller explosion that put him in
the hospital for a year.  When he recovered he returned to roofing,
which he did for many years.

On February 13, 1976, Jack married Mary Margaret Sopr in Laramie,
Wyoming where they made their home.  They moved to North Platte in 1992
and Jack retired.

He was a past member of the Moose Lodge and known as a ‘jack of all
trades’. He  liked working on vehicles, collecting toy trains and cars
and had fun racing them.

He leaves behind his wife, Mary, of North Platte; sons, Jay Mullendore,
of Wyoming and Scott Mullendore, of Texas; daughters, Rosie Cleveland,
of Montana, Tina (Roger) Mineard, of Washington and Peggy Caputo, of
North Platte; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kay
(Dale) White and Charlene Pratt, all of Wyoming and Adele Cardwell, of
Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

Jack was preceded in death by his father, William Hartgrave; mother and
stepfather, Mina and Tuff Downing; sister, Shirley Cottrell; and
brother, Bill Hartgrave.

Cremation was chosen and services will be at a later date.  The memorial
