Juliann “Julie” Sedlacek

Juliann “Julie” Sedlacek, 57, of North Platte, passed away on November 1, 2014 at her home. Julie was born on December 27, 1957 to Joe and Mary Wilson Sedlacek. Her death was preceded by her twin brother, Gerald Sedlacek who died at birth. She attended school in North Platte graduating from North Platte High School in 1976. Julie continued her post-high school training at Mid Plains Community College, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
In Denver and Colorado Springs, CO Julie served as an RN for many years. Helping others was truly one of her many gifts. A decade ago Julie moved back to North Platte where she cared for her mother who has Alzeheimers.
Julie is survived by her parents, Joe and Mary Sedlacek of North Platte; sister, Jeanie (John) Iberlin of Buffalo, WY; brother, Mike (Deb) Sedlacek of Bullevue, NE; and nieces, Lucie Sedlacek, Grace (David) Schumacher, and Danielle Barent.

Jean Brandt

Jean Brandt, 77, of North Platte, NE, passed away at her son’s home surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 1, 2014.

She was born Norma Jean on August 7, 1937, to Cecil Elmer and Mamie Elizabeth Horner Root at Hayes Center, NE and grew up in North Platte. Jean worked for her room and board through high school, graduating from North Platte High School in 1954.

Following her graduation, Jean worked as an operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone and for W.T. Grants. After raising her children, Jean worked for Harris News Agency then Mid-Plains Community College as Student Housing Manager for 17 years before retiring. Jean later went back to work for several more years with the Dollar Tree before retiring for the second time.

Jean was a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary and a life member of the Girl Scouts. She loved baking, gardening and doing good things for others, but was most proud of her daughter receiving her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree. Jean was an extremely hardworking woman.

She is survived by her children, Tammy (Mike) Buntjer, of Anchorage, AK and Rodney (Jennifer) Brandt and Steve Harvey, all of North Platte; four grandchildren, Rylee Brandt, Dustin (Valerie) Harvey, Dillon Harvey and Brandi Bayne; a great-granddaughter, Natalia Harvey; several nieces, nephews and other family.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Mamie Root; and two sisters, Evelyn Flagle and Barbara Luce.

Cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Ben Schumacher officiating. Memorials are suggested to Great Plains Hospice or Home Health. Freda Eunice Tabler

Freda Eunice Tabler, 92, of Arvada, CO, formerly of North Platte, NE, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2014, in Colorado.

Freda was born November 3, 1921, at Kenesaw, NE and was adopted by Fred and Maude Johnston Johnson. Freda grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School in 1939. While in school, she did restaurant work to help her mother.

On September 1, 1940, Freda married Howard John Tabler in North Platte where they made their home. They owned Tabler Construction and built many homes in the area. Freda also worked at the Lincoln County Court House in the Automotive Division. They were members of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In 1977 they moved to Idaho Springs, CO and later to San Diego, CA. After Howard’s death in 2000, Freda returned to North Platte until moving to Colorado in 2010.

She is survived by her children, Patricia McNeel, Cindy Brown and Larry Tabler, all of Denver, CO and Carolyn (Homer) McFarland, of Phoenix, AZ; her daughter-in-law, Linda Tabler, of Utah; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and other family.

Along with her husband, Howard, Freda was proceeded in death by their son, Howard, Jr. and infant son, Darrel; a grandson, Johnny Tabler; and her parents, Fred and Maude Johnson.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Burial will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Lola Mae Wurl

Lola Mae Wurl, age 82, entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Lola was born on February 27, 1932 to Simon and Wilda (Chase) Binegar. She grew up and attended school in Sutherland. She transferred to North Platte Senior High her junior year and graduated in 1949. On July 17, 1949 she married her best friend, Kenneth Wurl. The couple lived in North Platte where they raised their three daughters. Lola worked for the ASC office for several years before opening her own business, “Hi-Ho Ceramics.” She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Lola was the kindest, most compassionate, loving person you ever met. Her family meant everything to her and she would do anything for them. She loved animals and enjoyed feeding squirrels and birds on a daily basis. She loved watching her grandchildren play sports and she wouldn’t miss a game.
Lola is survived by her husband Kenneth; and her daughters, Sandra (Gary) Yanken of North Platte, Cathy (Larry) Lausten of Austin, TX, and Tammy (Lance) Michaels of North Platte; her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Scott Von Behren of Lincoln, NE, Greg (Heather) and Alex Von Behren of Rockville, MD, Heidi (Dan), Josh, and Kaeleigh Ertz of Omaha, NE, Sunnie (Jason), Evyn and Gavin Fox of Austin, TX, Brook (Justin), Tate, Ella, and Jacoby Janas of North Platte, Shelly (Eric), Brylie, and Kylan Wiedel of Austin, TX, Setera (E.J.) Gannon of Omaha, NE, Kenzie Michaels, Shay Doyle and Karli Lausten of Austin, TX, Jaedyn Michaels of North Platte, NE, Jacob and Morgan Lausten of Lincoln, NE; sisters Lois (Bill) Burch of Riverton, WY, Joy Steel of North Platte, NE, Dona (Richard) Samuelson; brothers Bill Binegar of North Platte, NE and Marv(Shirley) Binegar of Portland, OR; as well as numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother in-law Wes Steel.

Harvey Wesley William Lauer

Harvey Wesley William Lauer, age 93 of North Platte, passed away October 21, 2014 after a brief illness at home, surrounded by his loving wife Mary and oldest daughter Sara.
He was born May 28, 1921 in Macon, NE to Mana (Yelken) and William Lauer. He attended various schools in Lincoln, NE and graduated from Lincoln High where he acquired the nickname ‘Hook’ for his signature basketball shot. In the 1939-1940 season alone, he scored 73 points to take Lincoln High into the championship, and was named to the All State Tournament team for that year. In 1997 he was inducted into the Lincoln High Athletic Hall of Fame for his contribution to that championship team, and for his numerous contributions to the football and basketball teams. He attended the University of Nebraska, playing both football and basketball upon graduation from Lincoln High.
In 1942, he was called to serve his country in the Army as a Surgical Tech-Sergeant in the Pacific Theater stationed in the Philippines. He served from 1942 to 1945 and survived as a POW, and was granted an honorable discharge upon his return. Upon returning from the military, he started with the Union National Life Insurance Company, in a career that spanned over 65 years. He was an insurance man in North Platte for close to 60 years.
In 1948 he married Betty Jayne Bracken, and to this union were born: Sara, Bill, and David. In 1961 he married Elizabeth Ann Deibler and to this union was born son Fred. In 1971 he married Ruth Schuetz and to this union was born daughter Kelly. In 1982 after reconnecting at their 40th High School Reunion, he married Mary Agnes Pollock later that same year.
He was an avid Cornhuskers fan, and an avid golfer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend to many.
Harvey is survived by wife Mary; his sons and daughters: Sara Zimbelman (Mike) of Lincoln; Bill of Wyoming; Dr. David Lauer ( Kelly) of Lincoln; Fred (Eda) of Florida; and Kelly Milan (Leo) of Bennington; grandchildren: Zachary and Zane Zimbelman, Joshua (Pam), Jared, Jameson and Jackson Lauer, Brendan, Kira, Erynn, MacKenna, and Emma Milan; brother Walt Lauer of Rio Rancho, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Mana and William; daughter Mary Katherine; wife Betty Jayne; wife Elizabeth Ann; brothers, Richard and John; and sister, MaryAnn Buckingham.

Mary R. Fellows

Mary R. Fellows, 72, of Brady, NE, peacefully passed away October 26, 2014 at Linden Court in North Platte, NE. She was born October 15, 1942 in Lone Rock, AR to Bernard Donald (B.B.) and Lillian Mae Cantrell Blankinship.

Mary grew up in Viola, AR and graduated from Viola High School in 1960. After graduation she moved to Kansas City, MO and worked as a telephone operator. There she met Darrel Fellows who was enlisted in the United States Army. On January 27, 1962 they were married and soon after Darrel’s discharge from the military, they moved to Jerico Springs, MO where the couple bought and worked a farm for a few years. The couple moved back to Kansas City then lived in various other communities until finally settling in Callaway, NE in 1970. There they raised three children into adults then moved to Brady, NE in 1990. In Brady, they owned the Brady Get n Go from 1995 to 2012.

Mary was a loving mother and devoted wife who supported Darrel in all of his endeavors. She worked on the farm, was a police dispatcher, owner of a filling station and eventually joined Darrel as a nation wide truck driver for 16 years. She retired in 2004 and enjoyed watching the wild life around her lake home at Jefferies Lake south of Brady. August was her favorite time of year when the corn and chokecherries were ripe for the picking. She loved to make chokecherry jelly and often traded with neighbors for other home made canning and garden vegetables.

Mary was a member of the Red Hat Society, had a wonderful sense of humor and was a Good Samaritan always taking care of those around her. She will be remembered for her laughter and practical jokes.

Survivors include her husband Darrel R. Fellows of Brady; daughter, Arlena M. Mannila of Ftn Hills, AZ; son, Timothy R. (Connie) Fellows of Mesquite, TX; sister, Pearl J. Harper of Flippin, AZ; granddaughter, Chelsie Fellows of Mesquite, TX; grandsons, D.J. Mannila of Ftn. Hills, AZ; Cody (Erica) Fellows of Camp Pendleton, CA; Tanner Fellows of Miramar, CA and numerous other family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Michelle A. Hagemeister.

Russell Dean Smiley

Russell Dean Smiley, of North Platte, NE, formerly of Florida, died at the age of 52 as the result of a car accident in Tifton, GA, on Sunday, October 19, 2014.

Russ was born March 19, 1962, at Highland, IL to Eddie L. and Darla M. Patterson Smiley. He grew up in Illinois and later joined the U.S. Army, serving in the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, NC. Following his discharge Russ started his trade as a plumber which he was doing at the time of his death.

On June 20, 2008, Russ married Deanna Jo Shirley Klatt at Hudson, FL where they made their home. In December 2013, Russ and Deanna moved to North Platte. Russ loved motorcycles and was a Harley Rider.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna Smiley, and his in-laws, Vernon ‘Sonny’ and Eileen Shirley, all of North Platte; a daughter, Tiffany McCoy, of Melbourne, FL; stepson, Jeremiah Klatt, of Odessa, FL; four grandchildren; his siblings, Eddie, Jr. (Pam) Smiley, of Hudson, FL, Dana (Tommy) Rowland, of Spring Hill, FL and Sherrie (Rusty) Davidson and Shelly Henderson, all of Illinois; his step siblings, Amber Smiley and Darin (Erika) Smiley, all of New Port Richey, FL and Jill (Steve) Mamalou, of Hudson, FL; eight nieces; eight nephews; and other family.

Russ was proceeded in death by his father, Eddie, Sr.; his sister, Shelly; and two days after his death, his mother, Darla Demkey, passed away.

Doris Royberta “Dickerson” Schnacker

Doris Royberta “Dickerson” Schnacker born January 5, 1923 passed through Heavens gates October 25, 2014 at the age of 91. She rejoined her loving husband, Denzil “Mac” Schnacker who passed on April 17, 2012. She was born on Woods Ranch, Cumro Ne. to Roy and Elsa (Miller) Dickerson. She graduated from Miller High School, Class of 1940. Mac and Doris married on August 17, 1940. Mac worked for the Union Pacific Railroad while Doris attended summer school at Kearney State College. They lived in Kearney, Miller and McCook for a while before calling North Platte home. Doris said her greatest blessings were her family. Doris was a member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed all the friends she made in CWF. She volunteered delivering Meals On Wheels, was active in visiting shut ins, and helping with domestic drug groups. She loved to read, loved baseball and Husker football. She always wore RED on game day. Doris and Mac enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and visited most of the US including Hawaii. She is survived by daughter, Karen Schnacker, North Platte, daughter, Cheryl (Ron) Joy of Holdrege and Lori (Bob) Berg of Sonora, CA; sister, May Stevens of San Antonio, TX; brother, Roy Dickerson of Womack, WA; 6 grandchildren, Tammi Amos, John Schnacker, , Dennis (Laura) Joy, Cherie (Drew) Gregory, Lindsey Berg, and Amber (Frank) Kasses; 6 great-grandchildren, Alisha, Ryan, Zach, Nathan, Toby and Johnny; 3 great-great grandchildren, Jedlynn, Odycee and Vance; brother-in-law, Wayne Schnacker, brother-in-law, Jack and wife Ruth Schnacker, brother-in-law, Loren and wife Pearl Schnacker; sister-in-law, Cleo Driewer; and brother-in-law, Dave Busch; and several nieces, nephews and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her dear parents; her loving husband Mac and his parents, John and Florence Schnacker; her son, Jerry Schnacker; her sister, Evelyn and husband Don Armstrong; many wonderful sisters and brothers- in-law; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Mac and Doris always had the welcome mat out for everyone. Doris will be remembered for her kindness, her wonderful sense of humor and her love of family and the Lord. What a blessing and great example she was to all who knew her.

Pauline L. Snyder

Pauline L. Snyder, 87, of North Platte, passed away October 25, 2014 at Linden Court. She was born May 15, 1927 to Onie and Lilly (Bisher) Ray at Orchard, Nebraska. Pauline was united in marriage on Feb. 22, 1948 to Leonard E. Snyder at Burwell, NE. To this union they had a daughter, Cletra L. Snyder. The family resided in the Grand Island and North Platte areas. Pauline enjoyed sewing, carpentry and liked to fossil hunt with her family.
