Wynona Rose Grandel, 78, of North Platte, NE, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, NE.

Wynona was born April 3, 1936, to Elmer F. and Rose E. Brees Bowker at Haigler, NE. She grew up in Big Springs, NE where she graduated from high school in 1954. Wynona worked in a cafe owned by her parents and that is where she met her future husband, Edward Lee Grandel.

On February 12, 1956, Wynona and Ed were married in Big Springs and made their home there until moving to North Platte in 1962. Wynona continued to work as a waitress at Perkins for many years. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was very active and involved with several support groups. Wynona was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a special friend to many.

She will be missed by her husband of 58 years, Ed, and their son, David (Joni) Grandel, all of North Platte; four grandchildren, Chris Grandel, Zach (Sarah) Grandel, Zane (Sarah) Grandel and Amanda Grandel; her step grandchildren, Samantha and Cody Murrain; 10 great-grandchildren, Alex, Gracie, Jaicen, David, Hanna, Carson, Gage, Bailey, Cole and Adam; her brother, Merl (Mary) Bowker, of Duluth, MN; two sisters-in-law, Clara (Serge) Dragutin, of California and Doris Bowker, of Julesburg, CO; many nieces, nephews and other family and her many special friends.

Wynona was preceded in death by her daughter, Rhonda Murrain; her parents, Elmer and Rose Bowker; four brothers, Lloyd, Beryl, Warren and Gary Bowker; and a brother-in-law, Bob Grandel.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Timothy Adams officiating. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. (MT) in the Big Springs Cemetery. Mary L. Haugland

Mary L. Haugland, 73, of Parker, Colorado, formerly of Sutherland, Nebraska passed away July 15, 2014 at Saint Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado. Mary was born June 7, 1940 in Sutherland to Jacob and Louise (Burklund) Haugland. She graduated from Sutherland High School and attended Burke’s Business College and Kearney State Teacher’s College. Mary taught country school for two years however most of her career was spent with the National Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management. She took an early retirement to help care for her mother.
Mary loved wildlife and animals. She enjoyed camping and traveling as well as geneology. Animals were her passion and she spent many of her retirement years as a volunteer for the Denver Zoo.
Survivors include her brothers, Jim (Donna) Haugland of Sutherland, NE and Jerry Haughland of Chadron, NE; nieces, Jill (Bruce) white of Kingman, AZ and Jo (Richard) Lee of Sutherland; nephews, Charles Haugland and Michael Haugland; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jilian Rae Torres, age 34 of North Platte, passed away Tuesday July 15, 2014 after courageously battling a multitude of health issues for many years.
Jilian was born on April 15, 1980 in Lexington, NE to Richard and Teresa (Majeski) Rumery Sr. She grew up in North Platte after losing her parents at young age. She became a CNA and worked at the Pawnee Hotel and Premier Estates. She married Mikey Torres, Jr. on May 16, 2013. She loved to sing, listen to country music, watch TV Land and spend time with her family.
Jilian is survived by her husband Mikey Torres Jr of North Platte; 3 step-daughters, Miranda (Ross) Spencer of McCook, Natasha Torres of North Platte, Laryssa Torres of North Platte; 2 step-sons Michael (Kassie) Torres and Steven Torres both of North Platte; 10 grandchildren; sister Angel (Borrego) Macias of Topeka, KS; 2 brothers Rick (Angie) Rumery of Friend, NE, Pat (Emily) Rumery of Lincoln; 9 nieces; 2 nephews; and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents; and a brother Jackson Rumery.

Darlene Joyce Swanson, age 79 of Dickens, passed away Thursday July 17, 2014 at Centennial Park in North Platte.
Darlene was born on January 24, 1935 in North Platte to Rastie and Mary (Hayworth) Stearns. She grew up in the area and graduated from North Platte High School. She married Gordon Swanson on July 12, 1952 and the couple lived in California while he was in the service. After Gordon’s discharge, they returned to ranch in Dickens and continued to live there until moving to Wallace four years ago. Darlene was the Postmaster at Dickens for many years; also she and Gordon tended bar in Wallace and were caretakers of the Dickens Cemetery.
Darlene is survived by her husband Gordon; 3 children Lynn (Kathy) Swanson of Wallace, Cindy Swanson of North Platte and Toad (Rod Wilson) West of Wallace; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister Maxine Gayman of North Platte; brother Terry (Valarie) Stearns of North Platte; and numerous other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Darrell, Tom and Don; sister, Arlene; and son-in-law, Bob West.

Brenda Kay Kolb, age 49 of Callaway, passed away July 17, 2014 at North Platte Care Center after a 13 year battle with cancer.

Brenda was born on March 23, 1965 in North Platte to Gene and Sharon (Booth) Kohl.  She grew up in the area and graduated from Hershey High School in 1983.  She worked at the Sutherland Care Center and various other nursing home and hospitals.  She was involved in her community and was a member of the Callaway Methodist Church.  She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother.

Brenda is survived by her children Jessica (David) Ray of Lincoln, Nicholas (April) Zierke of North Platte, Derrick Zierke of Callaway and Bre Anna Zierke of Arnold; 1 granchild Tyler Roddrick Zierke; parents Gene and Sharon Kohl of Hershey; grandmother Margaret Booth of North Platte; sisters Jody (Brian) Gosnell and Cora (Jim) Fox; brother Terry (Linda) Booth; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother Frank Kohl; grandfather Frank Booth; and grandparents Jenny and Val Payne and Melvin and Arlene Zierke.

Jo Ann Chrisp, 76, of Indian Wells, CA, formerly of Brady, NE, passed away Friday, July 11, 2014, at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA.

Jo Ann was born December 26, 1937, at Watertown, SD to Lawrence and Eunice Jankord. She grew up in Watertown, the San Francisco, CA area and Hershey, NE where she attended school and played softball.

On November 10, 1953, Jo Ann married Rodney ‘Rod’ Ernest Chrisp in Sterling, CO. They made their home in Brady, NE until they moved to California in 2001. They lived in Torrance, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells, CA and had celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Jo Ann was a member of the Brady United Methodist Church, taught Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF) and played and coached softball. She and Rod also enjoyed golfing.

She is survived by her husband, Rod, of Indian Wells; two daughters, Debra Chrisp, of Brady and Jodie Schleder, of Frisco, TX; her stepson, Michael ‘Micki’ (Deb) Welton, of Maxwell, NE; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Dana) Dishman, Shane (Sabrina) Bryant, Ryan Schleder and Brandon Schleder; her nephew, Neal (Darlene) Crider; a great-niece; and other family.

She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Eunice and Stanley Paul Fisher; and a sister, Ramona (Bob) Crider.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Brady United Methodist Church with Pastor Janie Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Florence Effie Ella (Nelson) Lunkwitz

Florence Effie Ella (Nelson) Lunkwitz, age 91 of Sutherland, passed away July 15, 2014 at the Sutherland Care Center.
Florence was born on January 20, 1923 in North Platte, to Fredrich Oscar Nelson and Effie Jane (Hankins) Nelson. She grew up in the area, was baptized at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in North Platte on April 20, 1924 and confirmed on the 5th day of April, 1936. She graduated from North Platte High School in May 1940. On February 27, 1940 she married Roy Everett Lunkwitz at the First Lutheran Church Parsonage (attended by Effie Nelson and Lilly Laveley). Roy and Florence were married 65 ½ years before Roy passed away in August of 2005.
At the age of 42, Florence went back to school to earn her teaching degree and graduated from Kearney State College in 1967 in 2 ½ years by taking 24 hours per semester. She received her BA degree in Elementary, History, and Political Science and the following year received her BA in Special Ed. She was one thesis short of receiving her Masters.
Florence worked out of her home for 42 years. She worked for Townsend Manufacturing in Sutherland and Good-all in Ogallala. After receiving her teaching degree, she taught at the Hershey Public Schools for 20 years, retiring in 1987. At that time Roy needed surgery for a pacemaker and she wanted to be there for him. She was well known at the “Hugging Teacher”, her dedication to her students, and getting parents in involved with their children’s education. She loved her husband Roy, her dog “Bandit”, and her many, many friends. She and Roy loved making crafts of all kinds. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Sutherland, a 50-plus year member of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES), and served as a board member of the Nebraska Visually Impaired Peer Support (VIPS). With the help of Roy, she presented over 10 workshops for the visually impaired. She and Roy were both winners of the VIP Presidential Award, recognizing their dedication and hard work to that organization.
Florence is survived by 4 sisters-in-law, Gladys Nelson, Eunice Gobel, Ione (Fred) Seifer, Rosie (Tom) Neilsen; 1 brother-in-law, Frank (Della) Lunkwitz; her special adopted family, Ted and Sandy Adams; 33 nieces and nephews; and her dog “Bandit”.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Lunkwitz; her mother and father; sister Gladys Nelson; and 2 brothers, Fred and Albert Nelson.

Bertha Irene Coleman

Bertha Irene Coleman, 66, of Ord, NE, formerly of North Platte, NE, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Park Place Golden Living Center in Grand Island, NE.

Bertha was born September 17, 1947, to Walter Max and Vina Easter Ann Pace Hasenauer at North Platte. She grew up on the family farm in Hayes County, NE and graduated from Maywood High School in 1967. Bertha then moved to Trayer, KS where she worked as a caregiver to a handicapped child and later washed dishes for a restaurant in Oberlin, KS.

On July 13, 1969, Bertha married Vance Wayne Coleman at the Berean Fundamental Church in North Platte where they made their home for a short time. In December 1969 they moved to a farm in Hayes County where Vance worked for her father. They moved to Hiawatha, KS in November 1970 then returned to North Platte a few months later and stayed until 1994 when they moved to Ord.

Bertha enjoyed solving word puzzles, crosswords and word finds.

She is survived by her husband, Vance, and two sons, Tim and Andrew Coleman, all of Ord; a daughter, Vina (Rick) Smith, of Springfield, MO; a grandson, Trey Michael Salem; three sisters, Barbara DeMoude, of Cheyenne, WY, Beulah (Dale) Docter, of Hershey, NE and Betty (Alton) Lowry, of Fort Collins, CO; three brothers, Charles (Barbara) Hasenauer, of North Platte, Herman (Becky) Hasenauer, of Wellfleet, NE and Eisenhower (Rhonda) Hasenauer, of Cheyenne, WY; her stepmother, Mable Hasenauer, of North Platte; aunts and uncles, Mary Smith, Bonnie (Paul) Broeder and Raymond (Arlene) Pace, all of North Platte and Mrs. Gerald Vadeen, of Arvada, CO; many nieces, nephews and other family.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Vina Hasenauer; an infant daughter; infant twin sons; two brothers, Ivan and David Hasenauer; and a brother-in-law, Harold DeMoude.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2014, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor Doug Olson of the Ord Evangelical Free Church officiating. Betty Jane Pinkston McDowell

Betty Jane Pinkston McDowell, 89, passed away peacefully July 9, 2014 at the Callaway District Hospital in Callaway, Nebraska.
She was born on February 17, 1925 in a sod house near Arnold to Homer and Leona Cook Pinkston. She graduated from Arnold High School with the class of 1941. After graduation she taught school in the sand hills north of Arnold.
On March 14, 1942 she married Robert Lavern McDowell in Grand Island, NE. They celebrated their 66th Anniversary in 2008. They had 3 daughters, Sandra, Jane and Betty Jo. She lived on the McDowell ranch for 66 years where she was a partner in the farming and ranching operations. Bob and Betty developed a guest ranch with fishing lakes, hunting and homemade meals. Besides the ranch she was employed by Arnold Jack and Jill grocery store and she also operated the Arnold Swirly Top. While her daughters were in school she was active as a Girl Scout Leader. Through the years she was a 4-H supporter, 4-H parent, grandparent and 4-H Council member.
Her hands were never idle because she was always, knitting, crocheting, quilting, or creating needle point works of art. Friends and family were often recipients of her beautiful needlework.
One of her joys in life was time spent with her dog Rudy. He was her constant companion. Her family was very important to her and she loved watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra (Roger) Stockall of Hershey, NE and their son Justin (Tonya Hoelting) of Scott City, KN and daughter Jane (Richard) Hornung of Arnold NE, their children Holly (Scott) Remund of Arnold, NE, Heidi (Joe) Hornung-Scherr of Lincoln, NE, Adam (Nicole) Hornung of Hong Kong, and Heather (Kyle) Schroer of Lincoln, NE and grandson Sam (Holly) Sennett of Omaha, NE, sister in law, Mildred Pinkston of Arnold, NE; great grandchildren Sawyer Hornung-Scherr, Seneca Hornung-Scherr, Sadie Hornung-Scherr, Rio Remund, Riata Remund, Rayce Hornung- Relka, Scout Schroer, Syler Sennett, Mya Sennett, Ada Hornung and, Mae Hornung; and step great-grandchildren Tyler Remund, Emily Remund, Paul Remund, and Paige Hoelting.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, daughter, Betty Jo Sennett, brothers John and Gene Pinkston, sister in law Fannie Pinkston, sister, Ena Maroney and parents Homer and Leona Pinkston.

Norman LeRoy House

Norman LeRoy House, 89, of North Platte, NE, passed away at home on Saturday, July 5, 2014.

Norman was born October 27, 1924, to Albert Roy and Electa Louise Hankins House at Paxton, NE where he grew up. He graduated from Paxton High School in 1943 then joined the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Air Corps a month later. Norman served four years during W.W.II and received a Purple Heart.

On January 14, 1946, Norman married Marcelle Varlyne Crook at her parent’s home in Paxton. Following his discharge in 1947, Norman returned to Paxton and worked for Chrisp Electric and Telephone Company. He later attended the American Academy of Horology in Denver, CO to become a certified watch maker. Norman and Marcelle moved to North Platte in 1950 where he worked for Gould Jewelry. They later started House of Time in 1954 and owned it until they retired in 1987.

Marcelle and Norman enjoyed their retirement years and did some traveling which included hunting trips to Canada. He also loved to fish, golf and hunt.

Norman was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rotary Noon Group, Toast Masters, American Legion P.R. Halligan Post #163 and a past member of the Elk Club. He was also a life member of the V.F.W. Post #1504, N.R.A. and D.A.V. Chapter #3.

He is survived by his daughters, Sherolyn “Sherry” (Vaughn) Bishop, of Buena Vista, CO and Janiece (Scott L.) Garrett, of North Platte; six grandchildren, Kendra (Ken) Conkle, Keri (Pete) Mangers, Kyle Bishop (fiancée, Katie Kumnick), Amanda Garrett, Justin (Tawny) Garrett and Allysun Garrett; four great-grandchildren, Emma, Addy and Aubrey Mangers and Israel Garrett; his sister, Roene Hutson, of Chadron, NE; a brother, Allen House, of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law, Virginia Crook, of North Platte; brother-in-law, Gary (Rosa) Crook, of Omaha, NE; several nieces, nephews and other family.

Norman was preceded in death by his wife, Marcelle; his parents, Albert and Electa House; a sister-in-law, Birdie House; and two brothers-in-law, R. Dean Crook and Kenneth Hutson.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Frank Fitch III officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. Condolences may also be shared at odeanchapel.com.
