William “Neal” Baxter
William “Neal” Baxter, 90, of North Platte departed this life on March 30, 2014, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.
Neal was born on October 26, 1923, to Archibald and Irene Baxter at their farmstead home near Dannebrog, NE. After graduating from Dannebrog High School, he attended St. Paul Business College, worked for the AAA (Agriculture Adjustment Act) and helped his dad on the farm for a few years before serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After an honorable discharge from military service, he enrolled in the University of Nebraska under the G.I. Bill, where he joined Farmhouse Fraternity and was a member of the fraternity’s barbershop quartet, who were popular performers around campus and continued singing together until very recently.
On June 11, 1950, he married Anna May Stewart in her home town of Edgar Nebraska. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Agronomy, he and Anne moved to Lexington, NE, where Neal became the assistant to Dawson County Extension Agent Harold Stevens in 1950. A year later, he was hired as the County Extension Agent for Lincoln County, spanning 15 years, and was very involved in the 4-H and Rural Youth programs during those years. The couple continued to live and raise their family in North Platte from that time on, except for one year spent in Madison, Wisconsin where Neal had a fellowship grant to earn his masters degree. After that year, Neal and Anne moved their family back to North Platte, where Neal was hired as the Information Specialist at the University of Nebraska’s West Central Research and Extension Center (WCREC), responsible for providing timely information to area County Extension Agents. He went on to serve two different stretches as acting Superintendent of WCREC before his retirement in 1982. .
Neal was very involved in his church and community, having served on the original NebraskaLand Days Board of Directors and as President of the North Platte Noon Rotary Club and also served as District Governor for Rotary District 5630. He greatly enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, in particular snow skiing and camping. Music was a passion for Neal and he was always happy to strike up a song for anyone who might want to join in. He loved his involvement in the North Platte Community Playhouse and performed in 12 different productions, including his favorite role of “Tevye“ in “Fiddler on the Roof”.
Neal is survived by his wife of (63) years, Anne, of North Platte; four sons, Stewart of North Platte, Dr. Kim (Nancy) of North Platte, Brian (Carrie) of Chaska, MN, and Paul of North Platte; grandson Logan Baxter and granddaughter Haley Baxter of Kearney; grandson Craig Baxter of Memphis, TN and granddaughter Mikaela (David) Meagher of Lincoln; granddaughter Elizabeth Baxter of Charlotte, NC and grandson Brandon Baxter of Hastings; his sister Ardyce Worth of Berkley, CA; four nephews and five nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David, and his sister Norma.

Lawrence W. “Butch” Eshleman II
Lawrence W. “Butch” Eshleman II, 66, of rural Brady was called away peacefully, at his home, surrounded by family to his eternal father on March 29, 2014. Butch was born April 15, 1947 to Lawrence W. and Mary Louise Horne Eshleman in Ft. Lewis, WA.
Butch grew up in North Platte, NE graduating from North Platte High School in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966, serving 3 years, 2 tours in Vietnam with the 51st Engineers A Company 589th Engineer Battalion. He was honorably discharged and returned to North Platte.
Butch worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in North Platte, Pocatello, Idaho and Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a carman for the Union Pacific for 20 years.
Butch loved to hunt, fish, play pool and weld. He could build anything. He spent many years hunting with friends in Eastern Colorado and most recently fishing at his cabin at the K-3 area of Lake McConaughy. He was a strong, courageous man with a great sense of humor who never gave up. He was a member of the VFW, Eagles and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Brady; children, Greg Eshleman, Kelly (Derek) Brown, Heidi (Larry) Thramer all of North Platte, and Clint (Grace) Ingalls of Papillion; mother, Mary Eshleman of North Platte; sister, Cindy (Brad) Andreesen of Lincoln; grandchildren, Justin and Corey Eshleman, Breken Berlyn Brown, Myiah, Luke & Allie Thramer, and Madison Ingalls Yonker; a niece, Sarah (James) Regier of Lincoln; nephew, Cameron Andreesen of Seattle, WA; great-nephew, Owen Regier of Lincoln; numerous other family members; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father; and grandparents.

Margaret “Odessa” Washburn Treat
Margaret “Odessa” Washburn Treat, 86, of Gothenburg, NE, formerly of North Platte, NE, went to be with her Lord on Monday, March 31, 2014, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg with her loving children surrounding her.
Odessa was born May 13, 1927, to Garnett and Ella Lovina Vise Washburn at Wilsonville, NE. She attended school at Wilsonville and graduated from Wilsonville High School in 1945.
On August 5, 1945, Odessa was united in marriage to Dee Lee Treat at Wilsonville where they made their home. To this union five children, Caraleen, Margaret, Deetta, Mary and Orlan, were born. They farmed in Wilsonville until 1971 when they moved to North Platte.
Odessa was a member of the Methodist Church and then after her marriage became a member of the First Baptist Church in Wilsonville and North Platte. She was also a member of the Calvary Assembly Church in North Platte and attended the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg.
Survivors include her children, Caraleen (Randy) Burton, of Bellevue, NE, Margaret (David) Ruf, of Wilsonville, Deetta (Randall) Isackson, of Gothenburg, Mary (Bert) Fitzpatrick, of Colorado Springs and Orlan (Chawna) Treat, of North Platte; 25 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Odessa was preceded in death by her husband, Dee Lee; her parents, Garnett and Ella Washburn; a sister, Audrey Washburn; brothers, Gerald and Arrice; a sister-in-law, Hannah Washburn; and three grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at the Evangelical Free Church in Gothenburg. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Wilsonville Cemetery. Mary Mercedes Warwick
Mary Mercedes Warwick, 90, of North Platte, NE, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Linden Court in North Platte, NE.
Mary was born February 12, 1924, to Clarence Wilson “Red” and Cecil M. Harvey Beam at Stapleton, NE where she grew up and graduated from Stapleton High School.
On November 27, 1941, Mary married Robert Mark Warwick at Stapleton. They moved to a farm south of Stapleton the following March where they lived until 1945 when they moved west of North Platte to farm. They moved into North Platte in 1955 and Mary worked as a cook for Madison Junior High for 20 years. Robert and Mary later moved to Hershey and retired from farming. In her later years, Mary returned to North Platte where she lived in the High Rise, Linden Estates and later Linden Court.
Mary was a member of the Sutherland Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed fishing and cooking. She also liked to read the newspapers, dance and yell at her son.
She is survived by her son, Dean (Julie) Warwick, of Hershey; a daughter-in-law, Wauneta Warwick, of Omaha, NE; six grandchildren, Dawn (Joe) Ayivi Guedehoussou, of Omaha, NE, Stacey (Gary) Kassebaum and Brent (Lisa) Warwick, of Lincoln, NE, Pat McNeil, of Brady, NE, Steve Arnold, of Seattle, WA and Crystal Warwick (fiancé, Austin Sauer) of North Platte; 10 great-grandchildren; her brothers, Arlen (Betty) Beam, of Lincoln, NE and Chuck (Ruth) Beam, of Maple Grove, MN; many nieces, nephews and other family.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; a son, Barry Warwick; a daughter-in-law, Betty Warwick; two infant daughters; her parents, Red and Cecil Beam; and her sister, Donna Jean Clark.

Shirley Jean Shaner
Shirley Jean Shaner, 81, of Maxwell, NE, passed away Saturday, March 29, 2014, at her home south of Maxwell.
Shirley was born August 4, 1932, to Archie A. Coon and Lois E. Karr at Brady, NE. She grew up in the Maxwell and Brady area and graduated from Maxwell High School.
On June 2, 1950, Shirley married Kenneth Loree Shaner at North Platte, NE. She followed Ken’s service career living wherever he was stationed for the next 20 years. Shirley later worked as a medical transcriptionist for Dr. Cooper’s office in North Platte until hiring on to the U.S. Post Office October 12, 1970, retiring in 1991.
Shirley loved boating and gambling. She belonged to Job’s Daughters and was involved in several civic services during her postal career.
She is survived by her daughter, Kim (Jack) McKenna, of Brady, NE; two granddaughters, Loree Stripling, of Tumwater, WA and Crystal Bergeron Bauer, of Lincoln, NE; a step grandson, John McKenna, of Lexington, NE; a brother-in-law, Dale (Betty) Shaner, of North Platte, NE; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews as well as other family.
Shirley joins her beloved husband, Ken, in rest as she had done in life. He preceded her in death a day earlier. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Lois.

Kenneth Loree Shaner
Kenneth Loree Shaner, 84, of Maxwell, NE, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
Ken was born February 10, 1930, to Ross D. and Hazel May Houser Shaner at Maxwell. He grew up on the family farm south of Maxwell and attended Maxwell schools. Ken joined the U.S. Navy in 1947 where he completed his GED and served for 20 years.
On June 2, 1950, Ken married Shirley Jean Coon in North Platte, NE. At the end of his military career they returned to the family farm. Ken worked for the Tri County and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, retiring in 1991.
Ken was an avid fisherman and boating enthusiast. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Tin Can Sailors and the Cruiser Sailors and the Fleet Reserve Associations.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley, of Maxwell; his daughter, Kim (Jack) McKenna, of Brady, NE; two granddaughters, Loree Stripling, of Tumwater, WA and Crystal Bergeron Bauer, of Lincoln, NE; a step grandson, John McKenna, of Lexington, NE; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Betty) Shaner, of North Platte, NE; numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

Bruno Wegner
Bruno Wegner, age 69 of North Platte, passed away Wednesday March 26, 2014 at his home.
Bruno was born on April 23, 1944 in Smiegel-Keis Kosten (Wartegan), Poland to Edward and Ottilie (Friske) Wegner. He was one of seven children born to the couple. He lived several miles east of Berlin, Germany through the summer of 1946 then moved to Bodenheim and Hamburg, Germany. Sponsored by a church, the family immigrated to the United States in early 1952. They worked on a ranch near Kingman, KS and in November of 1954 the family moved to Windsor, CO. While in school, Bruno was granted US citizenship. He graduated from high school in 1964 then served in the US Army for 3 years. After leaving the service Bruno worked for Weld County (CO) Highway Department in Greeley, CO for 31 years until retiring in 2002. He then drove truck for 6 years, retiring completely in 2008. On August 2, 1970 Bruno married Gloria Williams in Johnstown, CO. To this union Bruce and Dale were born. Bruno and Gloria divorced in 1992. On March 22, 1996 Bruno married the love of his life, Beverly “Bev” J. Kautz, in Elwood, NE.
Bruno is survived by his wife Bev; sons Bruce Wegner of Aurora, CO, Dale (Gloria) Wegner of Kersey, CO; stepchildren Marian Randall of Stapleton, NE, Kenneth (Lynette) Winters of Nebraska City, NE, and Bruce (Trish) Winters of North Platte; grandchildren Misty (Jarrett) Winters-Smolarkiewicz of Hays, KS, Kenneth (Ashley) Winters, Jr. of Worthington, MN, George (Fiancé Macy) Winters of Lincoln, NE, Rick (Amanda) Winters of North Platte, Jordan Winters of Centralia, WA, Ryan, Faith and Hope Winters of North Platte; great grandchildren Ajoni and Kiros Smolarkiewicz, Landon, Anthony and Jesse Winters, Carter Eagle Road, and Elizabeth Sue Winters; 2 sisters Selma and Laura; as well as numerous other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Paul, Helmut and twin sisters Anna and Olga; grandson Roy Lee; and brother-in-law Ernie.

Mary Suzanne “Suzi” Noonan
Mary Suzanne “Suzi” Noonan, 69, of North Platte, Neb., formerly of Aurora, Ill., died March 25, 2014 at home in North Platte after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. She was born July 13, 1944, in Dallas, Texas, to Dr. Stuart B. Stafford and Christine (Kozeal) Stafford.
Suzi graduated in 1962 from St. Patrick High School in North Platte and, after attending St. Louis University, graduated in 1966 from Creighton University in Omaha. For most of her career, she was a medical technologist at the former St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and at Mercy Center hospital in Aurora. She was most recently a technician for the University of Nebraska Ag Research facility in North Platte and also worked at the Salvation Army’s Girls Home. She served as medical technologist at the Darnall Army Medical Center at Ft. Hood, Texas, during the Vietnam War.
She loved spending time at her family ranch in Nebraska’s Sand Hills country, in Paxton, west of North Platte. As a youth, she and her palomino, “Candy,” won many barrel-racing events at rodeos in western Nebraska and she was named “Sutherland Rodeo Queen.” She was a member of the NCAA varsity basketball cheerleader squads for both the St. Louis U. Billikens and the Creighton U. Bluejays. She was an avid student of all levels of government and was active in the Democratic Party. She was a precinct committeewoman in Aurora and was a member of Adlai E. Stevenson’s U.S. Senate campaign in the 1970s. Suzi was an avid reader, and most enjoyed a good crime novel or mystery, and a Christmas didn’t pass without a homemade knitted gift to one of her children or grandchildren. She was especially proud of her four children and six grandchildren, and enjoyed a loving relationship with her daughters-in-law.
Suzi is survived by her mother; her children, Katie Richards of Cyprus, Christie Hahn of Chicago, Joe (Kim) Noonan of Dallas and Peter (Hilary) Noonan of Denver; her grandchildren, Tara Kaplan, Declan Richards, Connor Hahn, Davis Hahn, Wendy Noonan and Norah Noonan; a sister, Kay; and a brother, Kent. She was preceded in death by her father, and a sister, Janet, in childhood.

Myrtle Sue Zeigler
Myrtle Sue Zeigler, 62 of North Platte passed away March 25, 2014 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born January 13, 1952 in Emporia, Kansas to William Melvin and Sylvia May Lawson Allen. Myrtle grew up in North Platte. She was the middle daughter of nine girls so she learned to be a caregiver early in life.
She loved to make crafts, and spend time with people. She was known as “mom” to everyone, including her children’s friends. Anything she could do for the grandkids she would do.
Survivors include a daughter, Renee (Scott) Goodall of Gothenburg; sons, Robert (Wendy) Zeigler and Joey Zeigler all of North Platte; numerous grandchildren; great grandchildren; best friend, Lillian Kohl of North Platte; and Dick and Mert’s extended family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sylvia; a son, David Allen; sister, Vickie Parker; and special friend, Richard “Dick” Phillips.
