George E. Hartman Jr.

George E. Hartman Jr., 79, longtime Paxton resident, passed from this life on Nov. 3, 2013, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Sutherland, the son of George and Helen (McCormick) Hartman. George grew up on the farm near Paxton and graduated from Paxton High School in 1952, where he lettered in all sports. He then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He was a member of the university livestock judging team and the Farm House Fraternity.

In 1957, George married H. Emily Hemphill. The couple moved to the family farm in 1959 after a year and a half in O’Neill, where George served as assistant county agent. They lived on the family farm near Paxton ever since.

George was very proud of his cattle operation and registered Hereford cows. He was also a licensed real estate broker, appraiser and auctioneer. George worked part time for the University of Nebraska demonstrating agent software to farmers. This was one of the first software packages designed for agriculture finance and was so pioneering that George was featured in National Geographic magazine. At the auctions, he enjoyed entertaining the crowds with his auctioneer song prior to starting the sale.

He was a lifelong confirmed member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He served on the church council and taught Sunday school and confirmation classes. George had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir and for countless weddings and funerals. He was also very community minded and helped with events and fundraisers.

George loved attending Paxton High School sporting events and was an avid Husker fan. Golfing became a passion and he loved to play with his family and friends at the Sutherland Course.

After retirement, George was a substitute teacher for Paxton and Sutherland high schools. He especially enjoyed working with young people and teaching the subjects, as well as providing valuable life lessons to his students.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two sisters, Marge Hatheway and Jerry Price.

Survivors include his wife, Emily of 56 years; two sons, John (Kathy) Hartman, of Phillips, and Kirk (Linda) Hartman, of Lincoln; four grandchildren: Ryan Hartman, of Parker, Colo., Nathan (Bobbi) Hartman, of Columbus, and Megan Hartman and Cole Hartman, both of Lincoln; and one great-grandson, Brooks George Hartman, of Columbus,

Family was his life. George was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was greatly loved by his family.

LaDonna Mae Fuller


LaDonna Mae Fuller

LaDonna Mae Fuller, age 88, of North Platte, passed away November 5, 2013 at Garden County Health Services Nursing Home in Oshkosh, NE. She was born October 25, 1925 in Elm Creek, NE to Orie and Mae Balyeat Marshall. LaDonna grew up in Elm Creek, graduating from Elm Creek High School. She attended Hastings College for a year. LaDonna worked at the Ammunition Depot in Hastings during WWII. She met Dale Fuller and the couple was wed on September 5, 1945 in Phillipsburg, KS. The two celebrated 65 years of marriage on September 5, 2010. Dale and LaDonna lived in Bertrand and McCool Junction before settling in North Platte in 1953 where they owned and operated the Buffalo Bill Trading Post. In 1968 they moved to Brady where they owned and operated the Buffalo Bill TeePee until retirement in 1988. LaDonna enjoyed exotic animals, providing many of the animals at Cody Park for over 40 years. She was active in the Methodist Churches in North Platte and Brady. She enjoyed playing cards and games.
She is survived by her children, Montie (Maurine) Fuller of North Platte, Linda (Jack) Frye of Silver City, Iowa, Wayne (Kathy) Fuller of Kearney, Vickie (Rich) Buhrman of Gretna and Valerie (Kevin) Vincent of Oshkosh; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Williams of Georgia and Lucretia Fischer of Oregon; sisters-in-law, Clara Marshall of Elm Creek and Wanda Marshall of Kearney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dale in 2010; siblings, Vivian, Keith, and Basil; and an infant grandson, Brian Fuller.

Gladys Mae Jorgenson

Gladys Mae Jorgenson, 90, a life long resident of Hershey, NE, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, NE.

Gladys was born on March 9, 1923, to Arthur E. and Martha Ellen Smack Holtgren in North Platte. She grew up in Hershey and graduated from Hershey High School in 1941. She spent the war years attending the Grand Island School of Business and was later employed by the Crane Company in Grand Island, NE.

On November 22, 1945, Gladys married Virgil Kerwood Jorgenson at her parent’s home in Hershey. They lived in Hershey where they raised three children. Gladys’ family has owned and operated the Home Lumber and Supply Company in Hershey since the 1930’s beginning with her father and continuing with her husband and son.

Gladys was a member of Maria Lutheran Church and very active with the women of the ELCA. Gladys was a member of the Prairie Lake Boat Club for 40 years and enjoyed spending time at the lake with her family and friends. In 1993 Gladys and Virgil were Grand Marshals of the Hershey Fall Festival.

Gladys enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She loved to make Christmas candy and pastries. Gladys was an avid Husker fan and always supported the Hershey Panthers. In order to maintain her independence, Miranda Fry from Home Instead, helped Gladys these past three years.

She is survived by her children, Kip (Mary Ann) Jorgenson, of Hershey, Shirley (Fred) Krejci, of Springfield, NE and Tricia (Stephen) Rosno, of Lincoln, NE; seven grandchildren, Michael Jorgenson, of Hooper, NE, Amy Jorgenson and Andrew (Sarah) Krejci, all of Omaha, NE, Kara Krejci, of Eagleville, PA, Jill (Chetan) Huded, of Chicago, IL, Matthew Rosno, of Austin, TX and Jeffrey Rosno, of Lincoln, NE; her cat, Pooky; several nieces, nephews and other family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, and her parents, Arthur and Martha Holtgren.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2013, at Maria Lutheran Church in Hershey with Pastor Tim Eighmy officiating. Inurnment will be 2:30 p.m. in the North Platte Cemetery. Erma Maxine Robinson Montross Wallace, age 88, passed away November 4, 2013 at her home in North Platte, NE. She was born south of Maxwell, NE on November 1, 1925 to Orin and Elna (Anderson) Robinson. She graduated from North Platte Senior High School in 1941 at the very young age of 15. Erma and her husband, Junior Montross, were 4-H Horse Club leaders for over 8 years.
She is survived by her son and wife, Larry (Linda) Montross of North Platte; daughter and husband, Judy Steele (Dave) Mullen of North Platte; grandchildren, Jodi (Garth) Bullington of Mullen, NE, Kelly (Mark) Timmons of Billings, MT, John Ray Steele of North Platte, and Scott (Melissa) Steele of North Platte; great-grandchildren, Cortney Bullington of Kearney, NE, Justy Bullington of Chadron, NE, Nolan and Eli Timmons of Billings, MT, Michael Steele and friend Allie Reyna of North Platte, Kort Steele and Baylee Steele of North Platte.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Junior Montross in February 1992, Leslie Olson in February 1997, and Harvey Wallace in November 2007.

Beulah Marie Phifer

Beulah Marie Phifer, 89, of North Platte, passed away Nov. 3, 2013 at North Platte Care Center. Beulah was born July 7, 1924, on a farm south at Grainton, NE to William J. and Zelma (Plunkett) Hopping. She was the oldest of nine siblings. At the age of 12, she moved with her parents to north of North Platte and later to Maxwell, where she attended school.
On September 11, 1942, she married Clarence A. Phifer, he passed away Nov. 4, 1983. To this union were born three sons, John, Thomas and Kenneth, all of North Platte. They lived west of North Platte in the Platte Valley community for over 45 years. As a family, they enjoyed 4-H clubs, camping and lots of fishing. Beulah was the cook at Platte Valley District #8 grade school for many years.
Beulah was a member of the First Christian Church, UP Club #8, Platte Valley Women’s Club and the Platte Valley & Nicholas Extension Club. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and enjoyed their visits, time spent with them in the park and at her home.
She is survived by her sons, John, Thomas (Mona), Kenneth (Patty) all of North Platte; grandchildren, Angey Phifer of Ft. Collins, CO, Travis (Missy) Phifer of Thornton, CO, Michelle Young of Wichita, KS, Ryan (Michelle) Phifer of Olathe, KS, Joelle (Scott) Richardson of North Platte, and Julie (Joe) Hansen of Manteno, IL; great-grandchildren, Makaela, Kyle, Miriam, Greta, Ayden, Jace, Sydnie, Josie, Jaxson, Allison and Nathan; two sisters, Verna Taylor of North Platte and Deloris Mitchell of Monroe, OR; three sisters-in-laws, Doris Hopping of Albion, NE, Barbara Hopping of North Platte and Doris E. Hopping of Albuquerque, NM; Blain Plunkett of Ogallala; Dorothy Hunt of Greenville, OH; a special friend, Lorna Suzuki of Honolulu, HI; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her parents; a sister, Helen Pinkston; brothers, Allen, James, Wayne, Edward and Clifford Hopping; and brothers-in-law, William Taylor, David Mitchell and Ellis Pinkson.

Wesley L. Amweg


amweg, wesWesley L. Amweg, 87, of North Platte, passed away Oct. 31, 2013 at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

He was born January 12, 1926 to Frank and Myrtle (Cooper) Amweg at Waynoka, OK.  He grew up and attended school at Waynoka.  He served in the United States Navy during WWII and later retired in United States Air Force.  On August 26, 1973, he was united in marriage to Joan Samuelson in North Platte.  He was employed briefly for the Union Pacific Railroad and went on to work in sales and parts for various businesses.  Wes enjoyed traveling, wintering in Texas, Arizona, and Florida, fishing, woodworking, and was an avid gardener and reader. Family was important to him, he doted over his wife and loved his children, grand and great grandchildren.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Eagles.  He is survived by his wife, Joan of North Platte; children, James Michael (Melanie) Martin of Turlock, CA, Janalee (Eddie) Hanson of Kansas City, MO, and John (Peggy) Martin of North Platte; four grandchildren, Tom (Jill) Hanson, Tavis Hanson, Scott (Kelli) Martin and Carrie Williams; two great grandchildren, Layla and Mekai Martin; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and a sister.  Online condolences may be shared at www.carpentermemorial.com. Ferne Fraze

She was born November 20, 1917 to Jesse and Ilah (Floyd) Taylor. Ferne was a 1935 graduate of Minden High School. On July 3, 1939 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Fraze in North Platte. They lived in Maxwell and later moved to North Platte where she was a supervisor in the district office for Northwestern Bell. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in North Platte and the Telephone Pioneers. Ferne loved to travel, crafts, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and reading. Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews including Dean (Donna) Kittle of North Platte, Donn (Shirley) Kittle of Owatonna, MN and Jean (Roger) Pramberg of Gothenburg; sister-in-law, Donna (Don) Mentzer of North Platte; and countless great, great-great, and great great great nieces and nephews. Ferne was preceded in death by her loving husband, four brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, November 4, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in North Platte. Donald Hall

Donald Hall, age 65 of North Platte, passed away Friday November 1, 2013 at his home.
Donald was born September 27, 1948 in North Platte to Claude and Florence Hall. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1966. He worked as a carpenter most of his life, working on many building in North Platte and in Washington. He enjoyed breeding and raising horses and riding in the mountains.
Donald is survived by his daughter Dawn Rene Nelson of Hershey; daughter-in-law Tina Pitre of North Platte; stepson Shane Casey of Washington; 3 sisters Joan, Cathy and Rose; grandson Gabriel Anderson of Hershey; and his best friend Amy Heming of Washington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Shannon Vodegal.

Shawn Matthew Davis

Shawn Matthew Davis, 48, of North Platte, passed away October 29, 2013 at his home. He was born July 17, 1965 at Cambridge, NE to Howard and Erlene (Fenstermacher) Davis. Shawn graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1983 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts degree from Kearney State. He was united in marriage to Laura J. Stevens on April 24, 1993 in Kearney. This year they celebrated 20 years. They moved to North Platte, where he opened the Cabela’s Telemarketing Center. He recently celebrated 26 years with the company, as a business operations analyst. Shawn was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, where he was an elder, taught Sunday school and Pre-confirmation. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cabin with family. He is survived by his wife, Laura of North Platte, three daughters, Amelia, Olivia and Elaina all at home; his parents, Howard and Erlene Davis of Arapahoe; a sister, Debra (Rex) Melroy of Kearney; his parents-in-law, Les and Margene Stevens of Kearney; two brothers-in-law, William Stevens of Gothenburg and John (Lisa) Stevens of Kearney; nieces and nephews, Eric, Carlie, Hayley and Tyler and other relatives. Hideo Kamino

Hideo Kamino, 93, of North Platte, NE, passed away Oct. 28, 2013, at Linden Court in North Platte.

He was born March 12, 1920, in Hershey to Tomokichi and Sao Kamino. On April 24, 1954, Hideo married Helen Y. Kanno in Morrill, NE. Hideo and Helen farmed in the Platte Valley area until they retired in the late 1980’s and eventually moved into North Platte in 2007.

Hideo enjoyed many activities including coin collecting, bowling, playing cards, time with the Buffalo Bill Stamp Club, and traveled extensively. He was also very active in the Episcopal Church of Our Savior and Farm Bureau.

Hideo is survived by his wife, Helen, his siblings, Sam (Ruth) Kamino of North Platte and Mary Kogiku of Riverside, CA; children, Patricia (Jeffrey) Pasternak of Oak Park, CA, and Terry Kamino of Omaha; seven nephews and five nieces.
