Elta M Roberts, 90, of Hershey, passed away August 26, 2013 at the Sutherland Care Center. She was born September 23, 1922 in Hornick, Iowa.
Elta attended school in Sargent, NE. After she graduated from High School she moved to Hornick, Iowa where she worked at a grocery store while attending college, receiving a BA degree from Wayne State College later in her life. Elta married Elheanan E. “Shorty” Roberts in Hornick, Iowa on February 10, 1946. They settled in Hoskins and Randolf, NE. Elta taught school for over 35 years. Teaching at country schools, and then taught for Hershey Public Schools retiring in 1989. She was a member of Maria Lutheran Church in Hershey and enjoyed sewing, crafts and gardening.
She is survived by her son Terrance Roberts of Hershey; grandson, Chad Roberts of Yankton, SD; granddaughter, Leita Roberts of Yankton, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; siblings, LeTha Roberts, Rueben Miller, Earl Miller, George Miller, Rosalla (Alfred) Uttecht and Violet (Paul) Hilkemann.

Dorothy J. McFarland
Dorothy J. McFarland, 83, of North Platte passed away August 23, 2013 at Centennial Park Retirement Village. She was born March 16, 1930 in North Platte to Clyde and Edna (Panzer) Macomber. Dorothy attended North Platte High School. On November 25, 1946 she married Francis Dale McFarland.
At the age of 55 she received her G.E.D. Dorothy was a homemaker who was most proud of her three sons. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Late in life she worked as a cashier at Conley-Detlefson Truck Stop.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and uncle and aunt, Chet and Marge Macomber.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Reverend Frank Fitch III officiating. Burial will follow at the North Platte City Cemetery. Roy Burton Fisher
Roy Burton Fisher, 89, of Curtis, Nebraska, died August 21, 2013 in Cozad, NE.
He was born December 10, 1923 in Moorefield, NE, son of Burton and Leafy L.(Clark) Fisher.
Roy grew up in the Moorefield area and graduated from Moorefield High School. He served his country in the US Navy as a Seabee from 1944-1946, stationed in Guam. June 8, 1947 married Katherine L Andersen at the Andersen homestead They lived around the Moorefield area most of their marriage, until they retired and moved to Curtis. Together they raised three children: Carol, Marvin, and Darrell. Roy was a lifelong farmer and rancher; farming and ranching East and Northeast of Moorefield NE. He was a past member of Nebraska Farm Bureau, Moorefield Elevator Board, and both Moorefield and Medicine Valley School Boards. He also served as the chairman of the Moorefield Cemetery Board.
Survivors include daughter – Carol Jean McKennon of Curtis, NE; two sons – Marvin R Fisher of Moorefield, NE, Darrell (Linda) Fisher of Moorefield, NE; two grandsons – Steven Fisher, Kevin Fisher both of Farnam, NE; two granddaughters – Christine (Bryan) Eicher of Commerce City, CO, Marie Fisher of Kearney, NE; along with several extended family and friends.
Roy was preceded in death by wife, Katherine L. Fisher; father, Burton Fisher; mother, Leafy L Fisher; brother, Loren Fisher; sister, Arlene Yeutter; son-in-law, Ralph Shuler.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Curtis, Nebraska; Saturday, August 24, 2013 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, August 25, 2013 at 2:30 pm with Rev. Bonnie Forney officiating.
Interment will follow in the Moorefield Cemetery, Moorefield, Nebraska.

Albert George McKain
Albert George McKain, 64, of Gretna, formerly of North Platte, passed away on Aug. 21, 2013. He was born September 29, 1948 to Albert and Elsie McKain in North Platte, NE. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1966 and went on to get a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music from the University of Nebraska / Lincoln and Masters Degree in Music Education from University of Nebraska / Kearney. He married Janelle Richey, November 29th 1981 in North Platte.
He was an Instrumental Music / Band teacher for 42 years and retired in 2011 from Millard Public Schools where he worked at Russell Middle School. He was also employed as a part time outfitter for the past 6 years at Cabela’s in La Vista.
Albert lived in Gretna and is survived by his wife Janelle McKain, children Mark (Stacy) McKain, Scott (Misty) McKain, Kayla McKain, grandchildren Emily and Luke McKain and Bryce Graybill, brother Ron (Pam) McKain, sister Carolyn (Eddie) McClain

Bernard Leon “Max” McCants
Bernard Leon “Max” McCants, 79, of North Platte passed away August 20, 2013 at the Bellevue Medical Center in Bellevue, NE. He was born on June 12, 1934 in Arnold, NE to Bernard W. and Josephine Bay McCants.
Max graduated from Stapleton High School. He lived most of his life in North Platte.
Max was a veteran of the Korean War, was a member of the Moose Lodge as well as a member of the Lincoln County Wildlife Gun Club.
Survivors include his daughters, Tish McCants of Omaha, NE, Alesia Schepers, and Kimberly Hergenrader both of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Steavie Hergenrader Reed of Conneticut, Kessy Hergenrader and Ethan Schepers both of Lincoln, NE; brothers, Gage (Carol) McCants of Mission, TX and Dennis (Rhonda) McCants of Lawton, OK; and special nieces and nephews, Colleen von Rentzell, Jason McCants, Sam McCants and Chris Feeney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Maureen Van Arnsdale.

Fidencio Castilleja “Joe” Janas
Fidencio Castilleja “Joe” Janas, Jr., 52, of North Platte, NE, formerly of Houston, TX, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the North Platte Care Center in North Platte.
Joe was born April 5, 1961, to Fidencio, Sr. and Santos Castilleja Janas at Hale Center, TX. He grew up in Houston and attended school there.
Joe moved to North Platte 11 years ago with his brothers where they worked for Overhead Door Company and Joe was an overhead door technician.
He is survived by his mother, Santos Lara, and his children, Fidencio “Raymond” and Angela Janas, all of Houston; brothers, Daniel and Ruben Janas, of North Platte, Lupio and George Janas, of California and Fabian Janas, of Colorado; sisters, Geneva Castro and Diane Janas, of Houston, Connie Janas, of California and Melinda Salazar, of Garden City, KS; many nieces, nephews and other family.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Fidencio Janas, Sr., and his stepfather, Lupe Lara; a brother, Manuel Janas; and a sister, Gracie Janas.

Frank “Bob” Robert Manners
Frank “Bob” Robert Manners, 84, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died August 18, 2013 in Gothenburg, NE.
He was born September 23, 1928 in Cozad, NE, son of Frank and Edna Manners.
Bob served his country in the US Army 1951 to 1957. He married Norie Campbell on May 3, 1951 at the Gothenburg First Presbyterian Church, to this union four children were born – Jon Robert, Deborah Kay, Robbi Jo and Bonnie Kay. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cozad. He enjoyed motorcycles, CB radios, mechanics, cowboy movies and food. Bob worked at Monroes/Tenneco in Cozad for 25 years.
Survivors include his wife, Norie Manners of Gothenburg, NE; son – Jon (Rhonda) Manners of North Platte, NE; two daughters – Deborah (Marvin) Hurd of Lakewood, CO, Robbi Jo (Steve) McKenney of Broken Bow, NE; four grandchildren- Elyce Hurd, Britnie, Conor McKenney and Haydon (Levi) Lira; two sisters – Kathy Hogan, Joanne (Pat) Hoyt; along with many extended family and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Bonnie Kay Manners, sister, Donna Lou Manners.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Wednesday, August 21, 2013 1:00pm – 8:00 pm.

Gary L. Bates
Gary L. Bates, age 45 of North Platte, died August 17, 2013 at his home. He was born on August 30, 1967 in Nebraska City, NE to Roger and Edna (Pennington) Bates. Gary grew up in Auburn, but moved with his family to Wallace where he graduated from Wallace High School with the class of 1986. He worked several years doing construction and driving trucks. He later attended the HVAC program at Mid Plains Community College. Gary worked his later years at Paulson’s and for Overton Sand and Gravel.
Gary loved his family, especially his nieces, nephew, and grandson. He enjoyed spending his time riding his trike, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed his dog Dozer, four wheel drive vehicles, and celebrating with family and friends.
Survivors include the Love of his Life, Sheila Schroeder of North Platte; parents, Roger (Lyn Incontro) Bates of Nehawka, NE, and Edna (John Pepper) Bates of Ogallala, NE; sister, Susan (Robert) Ebert of McCook, NE; nieces and nephew, Carolyn and Scott Gardner of North Platte, Spec. Jeff Phelps of Ft. Bragg, NC, and Juliann Phelps of Chappell, NE; step-children Nicole Mount of Gothenburg and Scott Schroeder of Lincoln; and a grandson Tyler Simons of Gothenburg. Barbara Ann Nichols
Barbara Ann Nichols, 67, of North Platte, NE, died Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.
Barbara was born October 19, 1945 to Vernon James and V. Nadine Rakes Peterson at Istachatta, FL where she grew up and graduated from high school. She worked in the family business in Florida before moving to Kaysville, UT and attending beauty school in Layton, UT. She then worked for Sperry Univac making circuit boards and later with the school system in different capacities.
On July 31, 1976, Barbara married Clyde Nichols at Kaysville where they made their home until moving to North Platte in October 1988. Here she worked at Krispy Krust Bakery until 1990 when her health declined and she became a stay-at-home mom.
Barbara was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and worked in their library. She was active in the church all her life. Barbara also enjoyed bead work, sweater painting and crafts.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde, and two sons, Kyle (Kay) Nichols and Dewaine Nichols, all of North Platte; a daughter, Rhonda Nichols, of Kearney, NE; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Brenda (Doug) Erickson, of Kaysville and Cheryl Jackson, of Middleberg, FL; her brothers, Ronald (Karen) Peterson and Keith Peterson, all of Lehi, UT; her uncles, Del Rakes, of the Philippines and Hershel Rakes, of Logan, UT; several nieces, nephews and other family.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.
Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Inurnment will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Patsy J. Howell
Patsy J. Howell, age 82, of North Platte, died August 17, 2013 at Linden Court. She was born on November 8, 1930 in Laurel, NE to Millard C. and Gertrude R. (Taylor) Spencer.
Patsy grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School. She moved to Kansas where she married Forrest Howell in 1951. To this union four children were born; Becky, Chip, Nita, and Peggy. The family moved back to North Platte where Patsy worked at the Tomahawk Truck Stop and Mid Plains Community College. Patsy was a Past President of the Eagles Auxiliary, member of the Moose, the 600 bowling club, and was an avid Husker fan.
Survivors include three children, Becky (Mike) Leet of North Platte, Chip (Teresa) Howell of Lincoln, and Nita (Michael) Casey of Housatonic, MA; nine grandchildren, Edward Maline, Nicole (Rob Zanger) Maline, Jamz Turner, Anne (Christopher) D’Aniello, Sarah (Jeremy) Page, Kimberly (Eric) Anderson, Jason (Kristy) Howell, Joshua (Jamie) Howell, and Jenna (Levi) Lash; twelve great-grandchildren; siblings, Bill (Maralyn) Spencer of Springfield, NE and Ginger (Marty) Bomberger of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father Millard; mother Gertrude Given; step father, Mansel Given; a daughter, Peggy Howell; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Casey.
