Hollis Virgil Emil Branting

Hollis Virgil Emil Branting, 92, passed away peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on April 2, 2013, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.
He was born on July 20, 1920, in Osceola, to Arvid Melden and Florence Victoria (Anderson) Branting. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to a farm south of North Platte. He attended one-room rural schools and graduated from North Platte High School in 1937.
On his 21st birthday, he married Frances Oscel Brott on July 20, 1941, at the First Baptist Church in North Platte. They were married for 53 years and had four children. During World War II, he proudly served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater from 1942-1945. He served in the 3217th Signal Service Battalion in General Eisenhower’s communication unit headquartered in London, and he lived through the London Blitz, receiving several commendations for his actions at that time.
When he returned after the war, Hollis worked as a mechanic and body man for Shrake’s Auto Body Shop. In 1954, Hollis, his brother Russell, and Fred Shrake founded ABC Auto Salvage, and he operated that business for 35 years, at which time he retired.
Hollis was a very active member of the North Platte community. He belonged to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church for 90 years, where he was confirmed and served on the Church Council and numerous committees. He also was on the North Platte City Council from 1962-1964, a charter member of the Cody Lions Club, troop leader for Boy Scouts of America, the Flatlander Car Club, the North Platte Woodcarvers Club, and the Living History Group. He was a 70-year member of American Legion Post 163, a lifetime member of the Odd Fellows Walla Walla Lodge 56, and served 25 years on the North Platte Odd Fellows High Rise Housing Board of Directors. He was on the statewide Keep Nebraska Beautiful Committee under the auspices of First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson.
He enjoyed numerous activities, including camping, hunting, and fishing with his family. He loved dancing, bowling, working on restoring antique cars, learning about his Swedish heritage, and woodcarving. He was especially fond of his red 1948 Willies Jeepster, frequently driving it in the Nebraskaland Days Antique Car Parade.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Brott Branting; his daughter, Carol Branting Smith; his son, Robert Francis Branting; and brothers, A. Melden Branting and Russell Allen Branting.
Hollis is survived by his daughter, Sandy (Van) Kistler of Lakewood, Colo.; his son, Jim, of Helena, Mont.; his sister, Dr. Arlene Sukraw, of North Platte; his brother-in-law, Joe (June) Brott, of Ely, Iowa; his special and devoted friend, Lorraine Rosane, of North Platte; his grandchildren, Heather Kistler, of New York City, Lynette Kistler of Blair, Tom (Jody) Branting of Helena, Mont., Christopher Branting, of Bozeman, Mont., Robert James Branting, of North Platte, Jamie Jo Branting, of Lincoln, Heidi Smith, of Lakewood, Colo., and Tracy Smith of Lincoln; his great-grandchildren, Tristen Branting, of Helena, Mont., and Jaiden Branting, of North Platte; his special friend and daughter-in-law, Bonny Branting, of North Platte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 8, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 5th and Sycamore in North Platte with the Rev. Frank Fitch officiating. Burial will be at Forth McPherson National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m., Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, with the family receiving friends from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of the arrangements.

Ione M. Schrader, age 67 of North Platte, passed away Thursday April 4, 2013 at Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte. Services are pending. Adams and Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John Andrew Loostrom

John Andrew Loostrom, 98, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died April 3, 2013 in Gothenburg, NE.

He was born January 21, 1915 on the family farm, in Custer County north of Gothenburg, NE, son of Peter and Marie (Peterson) Loostrom.

He attended New Hope School and Gothenburg High School. He spent his lifetime farming and ranching north of Gothenburg in Custer County and in Lincoln County between Brady and Maxwell. He married Beulah Bedell at North Platte on February 26, 1939, to this union, three children were born: David, Peggy and Mark.

Surviving are wife, Beulah Loostrom of Gothenburg, NE; two sons David (Linda) Loostrom of Gothenburg, NE; Mark (Shawn) Loostrom of Maxwell, NE; daughter – Peggy (John) Pape of Grand Island, NE; six grandchildren-Perry (Kristin) Loostrom, Gothenburg, NE; Wendy Jensen, Grand Island, NE; Merry (Mark) Danley, Lincoln, NE; Dr. Jeff (Stephanie) Pape, Norfolk, NE; Sherry (Ryan) Sanner, San Diego, CA; John (Melodie) Loostrom, Maxwell, NE; 12 great grandchildren, two sisters L. Johanna Bedell of North Platte, NE; Carol May Brown of Lexington, NE; brother-in-law Rod Carlson of Cozad, NE; sister-in-law Rosemary Loostrom of Plymouth, MI; along with a host of friends and extended family as reflected by his recent 98th birthday party.

John was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Marie Loostrom; three brothers Robert, Bruce, Ivan Loostrom, sister Mary Ann Carlson and two great-grandchildren Lane Michael and Bobbi Jo Loostrom.

Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Friday, April 05, 2013 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm with the family present from 5-7pm.

Graveside services will be held at Gothenburg Cemetery, Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 am with Pastor Robert Litzenberger officiating.

Dorothy L. Fear

Dorothy L. Fear, 87, of Wallace, passed away April 3, 2013 at Centennial Park Retirement Village of North Platte. Dorothy was born February 14, 1926 in Elsie, NE to James and Lilly R. (Dalgren) Brown. She married Guy Lloyd Fear November 17, 1943. He preceded her in death on Christmas Day in 2001. Dorothy always had a large garden, was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed all sewing and knitting. After her children were grown she went to Beauty School in McCook, working as a beautician in Wallace until her sight failed her. In addition to her husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and a brother. She is survived by a brother; four sisters; her son, Micheal (Pam); a daughter, Sandra (Kyle) McQueen all of North Platte; seven grandchildren, Sapphira Fear, Gabrielle (JJ) Holson, John (Robin Waters) McQueen, Janet (LaVerne) Gordon, Melissa Buss, Brenda (David) Andre and Jackie McQueen; and nine great grandchildren, Jazmine and Lavender Holson, Ryan and Justin Andre, Calvin Buss, Emma, Tatem, Grace and Margaret Gordon. Irma Johnson, 93, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, formerly of Brady, passed away April 1, 2013 at her daughter’s home in Lincoln, NE.

Services for Irma Johnson, 93, of Gothenburg, will be held at 3 p.m. at the Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, April 10, with Pastor Larry Viter officiating. Private family internment, prior to services, will be at Svea Dal cemetery north of Brady.

Irma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis: six sisters; and her daughter-in-law Judy Johnson.

Survivors include sons, Tedd (Lila) of North Platte; John of Brady; daughter, Pamela (Bill) Weekly of Lincoln. Grandchildren include:  Shawne Coonfare of Papillion; Bonita Johnson (Jim Jefferson) of Spearmont Maine; Shane (Amanda) Johnson of Benkleman; Matt (Vicki) Weekly of Brainard; Kurt (Tiffany) Weekly of Lincoln; Jael (John) Roschewski of Kearney.  Great grandchildren include: Chloe and Isabella Coonfare, Connor Coonfare; Will, Mike, PJ, Drew Weekly; Hunter, Avery Weekly, Judd and Jack Johnson. .

Leo Dean Sabin

Leo Dean Sabin, 70, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died April 2, 2013 at his home in Gothenburg, NE; following a battle with cancer.

He was born June 14, 1942 in Gothenburg, NE, son of John and Eva Louise (Cloyd) Sabin. He attended schools in Gothenburg and then joined the Navy. Leo served his country in the US Navy from 1960-63. After his discharge, he worked at Monroe’s and later as a semi-driver. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Leo married Joyce Werner Ostendorf on December 28, 1963 at the First Baptist Church in Gothenburg.

Surviving are wife, Joyce E. Sabin of Gothenburg, NE, three sons – Jerry Ostendorf of Amherst, NE, Gene Ostendorf of Amherst, NE, Monty Sabin of Hastings, NE; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters – Alice (Archie) Curtice of Cozad, NE, Betty (Phillip) Bottom of Lincoln, NE, Geil (John) Gilbert of Kearney, NE; two brothers – Robert Sabin, Terry “Chub” Sabin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley and Norman; sister, Jean; and daughter, Shelly.

Memorial Services will be held at First Baptist Church, April 6, 2013 at 1:30 pm with Pastor Bill Ivey officiating.

Maxine L. Kelley

Maxine L. Kelley, age 79, of North Platte passed away April 2, 2013 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She was born December 17, 1933 in North Platte to Walter and Petrea Sorensen Hunter. She grew up in North Platte, graduating from North Platte High School with the class of 1952. On April 31, 1951 Maxine married Charles R. Kelley in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
Maxine worked at JC Penney for many years, and also worked at Mid Plains Voc Tech, North Campus. She donated much of her time at the North Platte Public Schools and the Lincoln County Historical Museum. She spent much time at her church, serving on many boards and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Maxine also enjoyed bowling and playing shuffleboard. She was a member of the First Christian Church, and the Eagles Club which included serving as past president of the Ladies Auxiliary twice, and was active in Girl Scouts.
Maxine enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, giving them each a week one on one, which she really enjoyed.
Survivors include her husband, Charles of North Platte; children, Sandra Dagsen of West Jordan, Utah, David (Shannon) Kelley, Diane (Larry) Biss and Doug (Theresa) Kelley all of North Platte; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; numerous other family member and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister; and a brother, Floyd Hunter.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. April 5, 2013 at the First Christian Church with the Reverend Tim Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Rosemarie G. Cooper

Rosemarie G. Cooper, 88, of North Platte, passed away April 1, 2013, at her home.
Rosemarie was born on Jan. 22, 1925, in Aaechen, Germany.
Rosemarie moved to the United States in the early 1940s where she met George Cooper. They married on Aug. 8, 1954, and moved to North Platte. She worked at Great Plains Regional Medical Center where she was head of the Histology Department. She enjoyed making crafts, especially Christmas ornaments.
She was preceeded in death by her mother, Anita Consten; her daughter, Lori McNare; and sister, Lore Kettler.
She is survived by her son, Paul Cooper; her daughters, Heidi Cooper and Michelle (Emerald) Miller; eight grandchildren, Kyle (Anna) Johnson, Amy (Dominic) Rioux, Lisa and Katie Daniels, Casey and Kelby McNare and Zach and Michael Miller; six great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Carl McNare.

Clarence Lee Jolliffe

Clarence Lee Jolliffe, 86, passed away March 27, 2013, at the home of his daughter, Becky Dreyer, in Oregon City, Ore.
He was born on May 31, 1926, in North Platte, the son of Clarence Edward “Jolly” Jolliffe and Irma Matilda Miller.
He moved with his parents to Portland, Ore., about 1940 and spent the rest of his life in the Portland area. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic service.
After his military service he was employed at the Portland Woolen Mills and later worked for many years at the United Grocers Warehouse until his retirement. After his retirement he worked part-time at a Hobby Shop, which he greatly enjoyed.
During his early years, Lee enjoyed stock car racing and skin-diving at Lake Merwin in Washington. In his later years he was interested in building model boats, ships and airplanes and took great pleasure in these hobbies.
He was a kind, gentle soul with a tremendous sense of humor, who nurtured and appreciated the sanctity of life and family. His soft spoken and genuine demeanor epitomized him as a member of the greatest generation.
He was united in marriage to Shirley (Duckworth) Mihoover in 1946 and they were the parents of three children, Carol, David and Rebecca. He was again united in marriage, to Mavis (Haglund) Kehm in 1963 and they were the parents of two sons, Troy and Victor.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, David Edward Jolliffe.
He is survived by his wife, Mavis, of Milwaukie, Ore.; four children, Carol, Becky, Troy and Victor; and four step-children, Skip, Lee, Peggy and Laura.

Marcel Vieyra, 59, of North Platte died Sunday, March 31, 2013 at his home in North Platte. He was born April 26, 1953, in North Platte, Ne to Raymond and Mary Martinez Vieyra.
Marcel married Estella Enriquez July 14, 1977. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for approximately 20 years and worked for CR England for approximately 10 years before retiring. He enjoyed jogging, his kids and grandchildren.
Marcel is survived by his children, four sons, Jason (Marcy) Vieyra, Joshua Vieyra, Marcello Vieyra Jr all of North Platte and Marcus Castillo of Pueblo, CO; 3 daughters, Reina (Eric) Burke, Maria (Daniel) Johnston and Estella Vieyra all of North Platte; sisters, Mary (Doug) Shaw and Patsy (Tim) Dilley all of North Platte; and 29 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Estella and brothers.
Christian Wake Services will be 7:00 p.m. today, April 3, 2013 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Neal Hock as celebrant. Cremation will follow Mass.
