Marjorie Sue Turnquist


Marjorie Sue Turnquist, 88, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 29, 2012 in Grand Island, NE.

Sue was born August 26, 1923 in Omaha, NE the seventh of 10 children to Dr. Homer David and Lola Cecile (Beard) Lurvey in Omaha, NE. She graduated from Hay Springs, NE high school and attended Chadron State College where she received her teaching certificate. She also received an accounting certificate from Omaha University. Sue lived for a short time in Arizona, where she worked as an accountant. She taught school at District 24, Valley, NE where she met Max Turnquist. She taught at Ashland Park, South Omaha, NE, the largest rural school in the world. Sue married Max Turnquist in 1958 at Gothenburg. To this union, two children were born – Mitzi and Greg. Sue was very active in her community and was a civic minded wife and mother. She served on the Red Cross Bloodmobile, was a Boy Scout & Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, Job’s Daughters, NCIP, volunteer Teacher’s Aide, Heart Fund, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Election Board, Gothenburg Community Playhouse, Girls State Selection Committee and Convention Counselor, Chairperson for Meals on Wheels, and MOPS. She enjoyed word puzzles, crafts, knitting crocheting, rubber stamping and making cards.

Survivors include daughter – Mitzi (Barrett) Stinson of Grand Island, NE; son – Gregory (Holly) Turnquist of Rochester Hills, MI; two grandsons -Gaven Turnquist, Kelton Turnquist; brother – Herbert (Imogene) Larvey of Omaha, NE; sister – Lillian Thieman both of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law – Ellen Dennis of Arnold, NE; brother-in-law – Don (Kathy) Turnquist of Hutchinson, KS; along with nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wendell Max Turnquist on April 1, 2012; her parents, two sisters – Helen Andrews, Anne Waldeck; three brothers – John, Bill and Lloyd Larvey.

Book Signing will be held at Thursday, August 16, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; .

Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:30 am with Pastor Bill Ivey officiating.

Cremation was chosen. She will be inurned with her husband in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, NE.

Dee Ann Diehl-Bartlett


Dee Ann Diehl-Bartlett, 54, of North Platte, died July 21, 2012, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg following a battle with cancer.
She was born July 10, 1958, in Gothenburg, daughter of Bill and DeDe (Sherman) Diehl. She grew up in Brady and graduated from Brady High School, class of 1976. She lived in the area, Gothenburg, Willow Island and most recently, North Platte.
She worked at various jobs in the Gothenburg and Cozad area. She enjoyed cooking, crochet and loving her grandchildren with all of her heart.
Surviving are her son, Taylor (Andrea) Armstrong, of Ashland; parents, Bill and DeDe Diehl; grandson, James Armstrong; granddaughters, Jocelyn and Jaley Armstrong; brothers, Scott (Pam) Diehl and Kenny (Lisa) Diehl, both of Brady; along with many nieces, nephews; and extended family and friends.
Dee was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Bockus; first husband, Jim Armstrong; nephew, Justin Bockus; grandparents, Willard and Elanor Diehl and Jim and Helen Sherman.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Robert Litzenberger officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Billy Leon Daniels


Billy Leon Daniels, 81, of Farmington, Ill., passed away Aug. 2, 2012, at his home following a long illness.
He was born on Sept. 29, 1930, in Dodge City, Kan., to F. Eugene and Helen Daniels.
He married Patricia L. Hartshorn on Aug. 29, 1948, in Holly, Colo. She survives.
He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 29 years, 19 years as an electronic technician at remote sites and the remaining 10 years as supervisor of the airport and surrounding sites in North Platte, where he retired in 1988.
He was a veteran and served in the Army from 1952-54. Billy was a member of the American Legion Post No. 140 of Farmington and Masonic Lodge No. 246 in Garden City, Kan.
He is also survived by four sons, Wallace Daniels, of Cheyenne, Wyo., David (Darla) Daniels, of Garden City, Kan., Michael (Cindy) Daniels, of Farmington, Ill., and Darrell (Sandi) Daniels, of San Diego, Calif.; and one daughter, Becky (Jerry) Brown, of Farmington, Ill.; one sister, Lorene Willhite, of El Dorado, Kan., also survives. The couple has 10 grandchildren.
The family plans to have a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Farmington Rescue Squad, 49 N Cone St, Farmington, Il 61531.

Steve Collier


Steve Collier passed away at his home in Dunning on July 31, 2012.
Steven Wayne Collier was born to Wayne and Zona Collier in Omaha on Aug. 5, 1947.
The family made their home southwest of Dunning on the Collier Family Ranch. Steve graduated from Halsey-Dunning High School in 1965.
Following graduation, Steve enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in Fort Still, Wyo., for two years. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Nebraska and made his home in Broken Bow.
He was employed by Wenquist. He later returned to the family ranch where he spent several years.
In 1980, Steve married Carolyn Pollard and they made their home in Poncha Springs, Colo., where Steve was employed by CoZinco. He managed the fertilizer production company. Steve and Carolyn enjoyed the home they built in Poncha Springs for many years. The house and yard were an ongoing project they loved to work on. Steve was a fantastic mechanic and loved to fix anything.
Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn (Pollard) Collier; his father, Wayne Collier; in-laws, Walter and Vera Rieber, and Steve and Carolyn’s precious dog, Muffin.
Steve is survived by his mother, Zona Collier; brother, Walter (Rebecca) Collier; sister, Ginger Christiansen; step-children, Kirk (Phyllis) Pollard and families; Karla (Jeff) White and families; sisters-in-law, Marlene (Norval) VanDiest, Phyllis (Jim) Wilhelm, Sandi Reiber (Gene Sullivan); brother-in-law, Merlyn (Sharon) Rieber; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were on Aug. 3, at the Open Bible Church in Dunning with Pastor Ralph McKay officiating. Inurnment will be at the Dunning Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Open Bible Church at Dunning.

Phyllis Darlene Billesbach


Phyllis Darlene Billesbach, 94, of North Platte, passed away August 4, 2012 at Bryan LGH in Lincoln, NE. She was born January 7, 1918 to Earnie and Beulah Jameson at Upland, NE. She graduated from Upland High School in 1935. Phyllis attended Business College in Hastings, NE. On April 11, 1937, she was united in marriage to Edson L. Billesbach in Upland. She was employed at Debus Bakery in Hastings. A son, Robert was born while they were living in Hastings. The family moved to Omaha in 1942, where their son, Richard was born. They moved to Bassett in 1945, where they owned and operated Home Furniture for 15 years. In 1960, they moved to North Platte and opened Home Furniture, Inc. until selling out in 1997.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Richard (Alice) of Lincoln, NE; daughter in law, Mary Billesbach of Tucson, Arizona; grandchildren, Brett (Lori) Billesbach, Shanna (Matt) Blair and Chris Billesbach; great grandchildren, Bryce and Alex Billesbach and Bob and Ben Blair; and a sister, Betty June Swanson of Loup City, NE., nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earnie and Beulah Jameson; her husband, Edson; her son, Robert; a brother-in-law, Cecil Swanson; sister-in-law, Lois Smith and brother-in-law Jay Smith.

Judith Anne Harris


Judith Anne Harris, age 55, of North Platte , died August 4, 2012 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center .  She was born on June 19, 1957 in Sacramento , CA to Russell and Marilyn ( Milton ) Sisley.
     Judy graduated from Roseville High School , and then received her BA in Sociology from Sacramento State.  After graduation, Judy entered the U.S. Air Force.  During her service she met and married Thomas L. Harris on April 25, 1985 in Oklahoma City , OK .  The couple continued to serve in the states and in Europe .  After Tom retired in 1999, the couple moved to North Platte where they have resided ever since.
     Judy attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, enjoyed cross-stitching, spending time with her treasured cats, and enjoying her family.
     Survivors include her husband Tom of North Platte; two children, David Harris of North Platte, and Katherine (Jan-Michael) Cruz of North Platte; two brothers, Kenneth (Lisa) Sisley of Kansas, and James (Estuko) Sisley of Oregon; two sisters, Laura (Joe) Clark, and Lynne (Pat) McNulty, all of Oregon; and numerous other family members and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Leona ‘Lee’ Jo Webster


Leona ‘Lee’ Jo Webster, 55, of North Platte, NE, died Friday, August 3, 2012, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

Leona ‘Lee’ was born June 17, 1957, at Gothenburg, NE to Demar Wesley and Ethel Faye Timmons Garner. She grew up and attended school in North Platte then later attended Mid-Plains Community College.

Lee was married and worked as a farm wife until she divorced. In 1980 Lee married William Webster and to this union two children were born. Following sixteen years of marriage, they divorced in 1996.

Lee was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She worked hard all her life at various places and most recently at the Ben Franklin Store until her health forced her to retire in 2011. She loved to sing country music, do any type of crafts and handwork. Her family, friends and her dogs were very important to her.

Lee is survived by her daughter, Amber Webster, a son, Raymond Webster, and her fiance, Rick Schrotberger, all of North Platte; a granddaughter, Abilene; six sisters, Glendin Patrick, Janie (Dale) Newtson, Lavella (Leonard) Pfeister and Mary (Kevin) Stewart, all of North Platte, Orpha (Terry) Walker, of Cozad, NE and Johnette (Fredrick) Long, of Metaire, LA; three brothers, John (Lora) Garner, of Gothenburg, NE and Don Garner and John Hanson, both of North Platte; her aunt, Marymae (Don) Seery, of North Platte; numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Demar Garner and Ethel Hanson, and stepfather, Gerald Hanson; her infant daughter, Shelly Herbaugh; a brother-in-law, Bradford Patrick; a niece, baby Walker; and a nephew, J.D. Garner.

Cremation was chosen. Arrangements are pending. The family has established a memorial. Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.

Rodney L. Watson


Rodney L. Watson, 64, of Arnold, went to be with the Lord on August 1, 2012, the result of an auto accident west of Arnold.
Rod was born July 13, 1948 in Arnold to Robert L. Watson and Norma J. (Merritt) Watson. He graduated from Arnold High School in 1966 and attended Chadron State College. Rod entered the United States Army in 1968 where he was trained as a helicopter gunner. He was honorably discharged in 1971.
During his short life, Rod was an excellent horseman and enjoyed training horses and working for various ranches. For many years, he also worked in his family’s business, and later owned Watson’s Grocery Store and Meat Processing in Arnold. For 16 years, he was an accomplished custom home builder and craftsman. He spent his final days pursuing his passion of teaching his grandchildren how to work with horses. It was his fervent desire that his family know the importance of honesty, hard work and love for the Lord.
Rod will be remembered for his faith, generosity, and willingness to help those in need. He loved laughter and spending time with his family and good friends. He was especially grateful for the many hours spent with his oldest grandchildren, Aubrey and Merritt.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Murray and Edith (Judkins) Watson, Vance and Bertha (Jenkins) Merritt; mother, Norma Dringman; mother-in-law, Delores Ferguson and brother-in-law, Doug Ferguson.
Rod is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Arnold; children, Shelly (Brent) Apperson of Arnold, Suzanne (Tyler) Personeni of Nevada, Renae (Jeff) Eastman of North Platte and Robert (Lana) Watson of Tryon; 9 grandchildren, Aubrey, Merritt, Hannah, Ashton, Alissa, Hollianna, Lane, Vincent and his younger brother; parents, Robert and Donna Watson of Holyoke, Colorado; one brother, Regan Watson of Arthur. He is also survived by Cheryl’s four children; father-in-law, Frosty Ferguson; nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends, Carol Watson and Violet Clausen of Arnold.
Cremation was chosen. As per Rod’s wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established in his name.

Carri Lynn Schadle


Carri Lynn Schadle, 47, of North Platte, died Aug. 1, 2012, at Pawnee Assisted Living. Family memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. (MST), on Saturday, Aug. 11, at Chadron United Methodist Church. Cremation was chosen. Memorials are suggested to Sunrise Community Services, Inc., a non-profit organization, at 155 Bordeaux, Chadron, NE 69337. Rosalie Agnes McAndrews


Rosalie Agnes McAndrews, 92, of Sutherland formerly of Omaha, died Aug. 1, 2012, at the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1919, to John and Martha Harvey of Missouri Valley, Iowa.
Rosalie was married to Donald McAndrews in Missouri Valley, Iowa, on Aug 3, 1938. They later moved to Omaha and raised three children.
For 48 years Rosalie sold shoes on the second floor of J L Brandeis Dept. Store in Omaha and worked an additional 12 years for Younkers. She retired at the age of 79. Selling shoes was her passion in life. Many customers have long remembered her.
She was preceded in death by husband, Donald; son, Michael; father and mother; three brothers: Jack, Richard and Donnie Harvey; and sister, Parrilee (Harvey) Cooper.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Earl) Jones, of Sutherland; son, Gerald (Jackie) McAndrews, of Waukesha, Wis.; grandchildren, Steven (Kerri) Jones, of Belgrade, Mont., Scott (Beth) Jones, of Mullen, Judy (Brian) Lusk, of North Platte, Brian McAndrews, of West Bend, Wis., Christie McAndrews, of Naples, Fla., Shannon (Dane) Livermore, of Blair; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, at the Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler’s West Center Chapel.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Omaha. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Omaha.
