Peggy L. Childress, 84, of Lexington, died July 10, 2012, at Lexington Regional Health Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 13, at Reynolds-Love Funeral Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Caroline Vickery officiating. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery at Lexington. Harry Ray Boyles


Harry Ray Boyles, 86, of Mason City, died July 8, 2012, at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 13, at the First Baptist Church in Mason City with the Rev. Bill Ragan officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors. Kyla Creelynn Schultz

Kyla Creelynn Schultz, daughter of Cassandra Cree Schultz, became an angel on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

Kyla was a moment in our hands, but forever in our hearts.

She is survived by her mother, Cassandra Schultz, and brother, Ean Coe; grandmother, Jennifer Kuenning; grandfather, Rodney (Shelby) Schultz; great-grandmothers, Deb Forbes and Ronda Schultz; great-grandfather, Terry Schultz; her uncle, Tyler Kuenning, all of North Platte; and numerous other uncles, aunts and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Dennis Forbes; and her uncle, Christopher Schultz.

A private family memorial service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012, at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore which is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com.

Ruben J. Fernandez Grabbing Bear

Ruben J. Fernandez Grabbing Bear, 23, of North Platte, passed away July 6, 2012, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 7, 1988, in North Platte.
Ruben is survived by his mother, Peggy Goodwin, of North Platte; a sister, Leova Fernandez, of Lincoln; two brothers, Felipe Carland, of North Platte, and Miguel Fernandez, of North Platte; a special friend, Tiffiny Estrada; grandparents, Loren and Lucille Carland; aunts and uncles, Leann Grabbing Bear, Tony and Marnia Hughes, Joe and Kristy Hughes, Lawrence Carland, Jukes Munoz, Char Anderson, Darrell Spotted Elk and Edna Apple; special nieces and nephews, Mark O’Dean,Jacquline, Ali, Marley, Anakin, Alex, Nene, Serenity, Sabastin, Tabiaz and Corbin; special cousins, Mijo, Briano, Filemon Munoz, Cory Zeigler, Nadezdha Hughes and Dannie Carland; Ruben’s dogs, Justice, Caution, Gonzo and Felony; and many family and friends.

Al Beyer Jr.

Al Beyer Jr., owner of Valley Honda and Sporting Goods store in Scottsbluff, (1960-85) passed peacefully on Feb. 29, 2012, surrounded his loving family in Pleasanton, Calif.
Al was born at the homestead in Box Elder Canyon near Maxwell on Jan. 24, 1924.
He served in World War II, hand gliding from England, parachuting into France and fighting from there to Berlin. After the war he built a home in North Platte and laid carpet and linoleum until a back injury sent him on the road selling cigarettes for L&M where he met the owner of Sporting Goods store and moved to Scottsbluff in 1958.
Al rode motorcycles all over the country, Canada and Mexico until his 70s, was a pilot and loved woodworking, hunting and fishing.
Al’s wife, B (Keeten); and son, Allen Paul, preceded him in death, as well as both parents; brother; and sisters, one being Alesa Jean Ziegler, of North Platte.
Al is survived by his sisters-in-law, Lue Scott, of North Platte, Corrine Mattson, of Mt. Holly, N.J., and Onnie Beyer (Wanda Carpenter), now of Pacific City, Ore.; also, by his daughter, Cathi Bobbitt, of Pleasanton, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Beverly (Gerlock) Heilbrun, of Gilbert, Ariz.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.
There will be an informal memorial service for Al in Scottsbluff at 2 p.m. on July 14 at the First Baptist Church, 3009 Avenue I. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 16, with military honors at Floral Lawn Cemetery in North Platte.

Marston Doolittle

Marston Doolittle, 75, of rural North Platte, died on July 5, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo., as the result of a severe head injury he received while hiking with several of his children.
He was born to Hosmer and Mabel Atkinson Doolittle in North Platte on Jan. 10, 1937, and was baptized in the Episcopal Church of Our Savior. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1955. He was drafted into the army in 1958, spending two years in Bad Kissingen, Germany, where he met and married Heidi Lorenz in 1959.
He returned to North Platte and in 1964 was seriously injured in an electrical accident on the farm. He married Mary Proctor on May 3, 1970, and their lives were blessed by 11 children. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher.
Marston enjoyed being surrounded by his family and they went on many picnics and camping trips together. He was a kind and giving grandpa, often giving his grandchildren little keepsakes like arrowheads, rocks and coins. He was very compassionate to the sick or needy, and deeply loved nature and animals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Micah in 1996 and Mark in 2006.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Gayla Doolittle, of Mifflinburg, Pa.; six daughters, Molly (Charles) Nightengale, Minnie (Jerry) Schmidt, Miranda (Marshall) Koehn, Mia (Tyson) Koehn, and Maria Doolittle, all of Madrid, and Martha (Russell) Koehn, of Burns, Kan.; three sons, Martin (Kim) presently serving as missionaries in the Dominican Republic, Elkanah (Kendra) and Hosmer (Jana), all of Madrid; 12 grandsons; 13 granddaughters; one sister, Marilyn (Bud) Rand, of Ft.Collins; two nieces and one nephew; Mary Doolittle, the mother of his children, of Madrid; close friends, Pat (Heidi) Kelley, of North Platte, and Heidi Lucas, of Germany.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. (MDT) on Wednesday, July 11, at the Golden Plains Mennonite Church west of Madrid and burial will be at the North Platte City Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. Bullock-Long Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jane Ann Taylor

Jane Ann Taylor, 79, of North Platte, passed away July 8, 2012.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1932, in Falls City to George and Blanche Montague Rieger. Jane graduated from Falls City High School and then attended Peru State Teachers College.
She taught at Central City for a year and then married Bernie Taylor on Aug. 9, 1953, in Falls City. The couple moved to Omaha where Jane taught school for four years while her husband was in medical school. They later moved to North Platte where Bernie practiced medicine and Jane stayed home to raise her family.
Jane was a member of the First Christian Church, was very active in many organizations which included President of the Goodfellow Shoe Fund, the Miss Nebraska organization, Lincoln County Medical Auxiliary, Campfire Girls, Great Plains Medical Center gift shop manager, the Community Playhouse Guild and was the Legislative Community President of the American Medical Auxiliary. Jane logged more than 25,000 volunteer hours at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. She also was named Lady of the Year by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in 1985 and was awarded Admiral in the Nebraska Navy by Governor Mike Johanns. She donated many hours of her time and talent to the citizens in Lincoln County and to the Heart Instution Bryan LGH.
She is survived by her husband, Bernie Taylor, M.D., of North Platte; children, Deborah (Tim) Budin, Mike (Nancy) Taylor and Mark (Gail) Taylor; grandchildren, Katie, Sarah and Emily Taylor, Christopher and Elizabeth Budin, Josh and Nathan Taylor and Andra (Aric) Berhow; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Taylor and Ellie and Audrey and Aiden Berhow; sister-in-law, Marilyn Davenport, of Topeka, Kan.; sister, Nancy (Edward) Boehme; and a brother, Paul (Veronica) Rieger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Janie.

Gene Stewart Williams, Sr.

Gene Stewart Williams, Sr., 85, of North Platte, NE died Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.

Gene was born July 29, 1926, to John Otis and Lillian Stewart Williams at Meridian, MS. He grew up and attended school in Lumberton, MS. Immediately after graduating high school, Gene enlisted in the U.S. Navy on May 12, 1944. He was discharged on June 6, 1946 and returned to Starkville, MS where he attended Mississippi State University and received a B.S. in Business. Gene then went to work for Gulf Oil Corporation in New Orleans, LA.

On October 28, 1953, Gene married Veda Faye Gorman. They moved to New Orleans and later moved to other southeastern states. He later resigned and went into the truck stop business in Brownsville, TN. In March 1972, they moved to North Platte and opened Williams Husky Truck Stop in Hershey, NE which they operated for 10 years. In 1976, they also opened the White Horse Pipe and Tobacco Shop in the White Horse Bar in the Pawnee Hotel. In 1978 he added Video Rental which was the first video rental in North Platte then moved this business into the old Montgomery Ward Building. In 1987 the business expanded and moved to south Dewey where the shop remained until he retired in 2000.

Gene was a member of the First Baptist Church. He liked to work in his yard and fish, especially in Canada. He also enjoyed Bronco football. Gene loved his family and liked traveling with them.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Patricia ‘Patti’ (Michael) McVay, of North Platte and her children, Joshua (Kay) Schwartzkopf, of Mason City, IA and LeeAnn (Carlos) Streit, of North Platte; his daughter-in-law, Jackie Williams, and her children, Taylor Williams and Charles Williams, all of Smithville, MO; two great-grandchildren, Brooke Holley and Alexis Streit; two sisters-in-law, Ostella (Raymond) Hudson, of Atlanta, TX and Allie Drue Gorman, of Hermitage, AR; three nieces, Glenda Faye Bowlin, Sheila McVay and Gina Hudson; and other family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye; his son, Gene Stewart Williams, Jr.; his parents, John and Lillian Williams; and his sister, Patricia Ann Williams.

Graveside funeral service with military honors will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012, in Ft. McPherson National Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore. Tia Lynn Helmut

Tia Lynn Helmut found peace with Our Lord on July 5, 2012, after a lengthy illness. She was Executive Administrator for Anthem Blue Cross and she was a prolific writer of poems.

Tia is survived by her mother and stepfather, Richard and Bonnie Maddox of Wellfleet, NE; her father John (Ann) Helmut of Ft. Collins, CO; her brother Todd (Kasey) Helmut; two nieces Kaitlyn and Allison of Wichita, KS; her Great Grandmother Birdie Helmut and her Aunt June Helmut, both of Ft. Collins, CO; her Great Grandmother Helen Maddox of Wichita, KS; her good friend Bill Small; many cousins, friends and her beloved cats..

A memorial has been established to the North Platte Animal Shelter and on-line condolences may be made at www.adamsswanson.com. Robert Dean Gaston

Robert Dean Gaston, age 82, longtime Ogallala resident, passed away on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Sutherland Care Center in Sutherland, Nebraska. He was born November 2, 1929 at Ogallala, Nebraska the first born son of Dr. K.L. and Gayle Gaston. On September 9, 1951 he married Kathryn A. Hagge at Ogallala. The couple were lifelong residents of Ogallala, graduating with the Class of 1948. He joined the United States Navy in August of 1950 and was a Teleman 3rd Class in the Communications Branch serving aboard the US Lake Champlain. He saw action in Korean waters operating with the Carrier Task Force 77 delivering daily air strikes against the communists. He saw duty in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Sea of Japan and China Sea. He was on the ship when it became the largest ship to transit the Suez Canal. During his career he worked for Wright Engineering and Supply Company in Denver, Colorado as a Production Manager, for Goodall Manufacturing and Chab Furniture. He also served as Chamber of Commerce Manager for the communities of Ogallala, Alliance, Roswell and Artesia, New Mexico. In 1971 he moved his family back to Ogallala where he was employed at Union 76 as a night manager, Ogallala Electronics, TRW and American Shizuki. He retired in 1994. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, First Congregational Church, the Ogallala Elks Lodge, VFW and American Legion. He served as the Director of the Ogallala Golf Association and was the president of the association for one year. He served on the Ogallala Fire and Rescue Squad and was a member of the first Dive Team. Among his hobbies were golf, hunting, fishing, Husker Football and sports, reading and spending time with family and friends.
