Dorothy Jean Grigg

Dorothy Jean Grigg, 94, of North Platte formerly of Sun City, AZ, passed away August 19, 2018 at Premier Estates.

Dorothy was born on September 15, 1923 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Claude and Helen (Inman) Vredenburg.  She grew up in Ft. Wayne, marrying Charles R. Grigg December 25, 1946.  The family lived all over the country following Charles in the construction business, settling in Trenton in 1958, where they ran Sandy’s Café for 8 years.  They moved to Pullman, MI and lived there until moving to Sun City, AZ in 1984, moving to North Platte April 2017 to be closer to family.

Dorothy had a love for making quilts, especially baby quilts that she donated for many years.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Claude Wayne (Evelyn) Grigg of Fennville, MI, and Sharon Meduna of North Platte; 10 grandchildren, including Jessica (Tom) Scheer of Omaha, Jon (Nashea) Meduna and Jay (Jessica) Meduna all of North Platte; 25 great-grandchildren, including Ellyana, Pheenyx, Mackena, Annalisa, Holdynn, and Julian: 2 great-great grandchildren; and siblings, Rita Reed, and  Marguerite Norris both of Sun City, AZ, and Donna (Richard) Romanowski of Glendale, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Roger Grigg; and several brothers, and sisters.

Toni Marquette

Toni Marquette, 83, of North Platte passed away august 21, 2018 at Linden Court.

Toni grew up in Robbinsdale, MN.  On June 2, 1953 she married Allan J. Marquette in Minneapolis, MN.  They moved to North Platte in 1971 where Allan was transferred with Consolidated Freight.

She enjoyed fishing, going to the cabin in Minnesota, going to the casino, and loved football, especially the Broncos and Vikings.

She is survived by her children, Roxanne (Richard) Merksick of North Platte, and Jody (Fred) Stanley of Omaha; grandchildren, Daniel (Denyelle) Totenhagen of Weeping Water, Traci (Chuck) Mathley of Avoca, Kahla Stanley, Aleah Stanley both of Omaha, and Amanda (Kyle) Hensen of Pleasant Dale, MI; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Vicki Westphal of Denver; daughter-in-law, Susan Marquette of Kearney; and a son-in-law, Darrel Kackmeister of Union.

Toni was preceded in death by her parents; husband; children, Sheryl Kackmeister, Randy Marquette, Daniel Marquette; and siblings, Bob, Jim, Gordon, Gerry, and Ann.

Barbara Ann Ellis

Barbara Ann Ellis, 85, of North Platte passed away August 17, 2018 at her daughter’s home in Lumber Bridge, NC.

Barbara was born on April 13, 1933 in Lincoln County, Nebraska to Grover and Mary (Perry) Baldwin.  She grew up in North Platte, graduating with the North Platte High School Class of 1951.  She married Robert Ellis in Clayton, KS.  The couple resided in North Platte, moving to NC where Robert was in the Marines.  After his discharge, they returned to North Platte.  Barbara worked at Centennial Nursing Home, North Platte High School, Gibson’s, and Woolworth’s.  She was a member of the Salvation Army Church where she enjoyed volunteering in the kitchen.

Survivors include her children, Marcia (Jess) Collins of Lumber Bridge, NC, and Randy (Sue) Ellis of North Platte; grandchildren, Michael Ellis of North Platte, and Brian Ellis of Kearney; and sisters, Donna Larson of North Platte, and Myrtle Pollat of Crete.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Dwaine, George, and James; and a sister, Dolores Crow.

Arvella Nadine Hood

Arvella Nadine Hood, 86, of North Platte, passed away August 19, 2018 at Linden Court.

She was born on August 22, 1931 to Richard and Juanita (Hanson) McKillip in Hayes County, Nebraska. She married Don Hood on May 26, 1956 and to this union four children were born.

Nadine grew up in Curtis and graduated from Curtis High School. She received her Bachelor Degree in education from the University of Nebraska. She taught at various area rural schools, including Sioux Lookout, Echo and Bignell.  Nadine also taught at Cody and Washington Schools in North Platte. At age 62, she retired from North Platte Public Schools. She enjoyed golf and playing bridge. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Harlan;  three brothers and spouses, Bill (Mary), Bob (JoAnn) and Gene (Mary Jane) McKillip; a sister in law Sylvia McKillip and a daughter in law, Sherry Hood.

She is survived by her four children, Susan (Fred) Bender, Casey Hood, Donna (Henry) Obermeier, Buck (Susan) Hood; siblings, Patrica McCoy, Mary Ellen (Larry) Ourada, Kenneth McKillip, Eileen (Jim) Hopkins;  grandchildren, Shawn C. (Amanda) Aten, Seth D. (Tracy) Aten, Shane B. Bender, Kelsey C. Hood, Henry (Brandi) Obermeier, Ashley E. (Eric) Steffes and Jenna L. Hood; great grandchildren, Brock Aten, Kenlee Aten, Parker Aten, Ani Aten, Nolan Steffes, Ethan Steffes, Ellie Steffes and Breah Obermeier.

Phyllis Jean Shavlik

Phyllis Jean Shavlik joined our Lord on August 15, 2018.

Phyllis was born February 26, 1939, to Elmer Laurits Peter and Ingrid (Beck) Bondo, children of Danish immigrants.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Boomer Township, Neola, IA, where her great-grandparents were charter members.  She grew up on the family farm near Underwood, IA, attending a one-room country school, Hazel Dell #1, through 8th grade; graduating from Underwood High School in 1957.  She graduated from Dana College, Blair, NE in 1961 with a degree in business, then worked in Omaha where she met Milo Louis Shavlik.

They were married May 30, 1964, and lived in Scottsbluff where Erica, Dan and Rebecca were born.  They moved to North Platte in 1970, where Deborah and Andrea were born.  Phyllis was active in First Ev. Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School & Vacation Bible School; was church secretary 26 years, secretary of the Women’s organization and chairman of her circle, participated in Bible studies and Prime Timers.   She held offices in Washington PTA and North Platte PTA Council.  She volunteered for the Lincoln County Historical Museum, serving on the board and as secretary.  The best times were with family, and they would travel to visit children each time they moved: Arizona, Denver, Indiana, Virginia, San Diego, Dallas, New York City, New Orleans and Sardinia.  Phyllis sewed hundreds of quilts and baby jackets for Lutheran World Relief, and a few Barbie fashions for her granddaughters.  She enjoyed her garden and prepared meals from vegetables she grew, collecting many recipes for zucchini.  She loved to make pies, and always had homemade cookies to share.  They enjoyed hosting youth from Up With People and other traveling groups.

Phyllis was preceded in death by parents; and brother, Paul Bondo.

Surviving family:  husband, Milo;  daughter Erica (Justin) Zabor, Emily & Jacob of Colorado Springs;  son Dan (Traci) Shavlik of North Platte and their children Devon (Kyle) Shrum, Molly and Cory Morrison, Sadie, and grandson Kyler;  daughter Becky (Tommy) Kelsey of North Platte and their children Monique, Matthew, and Mason Shavlik, Benjamin and Brady Kelsey and their grandchildren Elliott and Dylann; daughters Deborah Shavlik of New Orleans, LA; and  Andi (Matt) Polzkill of Denver, CO;  sister, Elaine Hoyer of Blair, NE;  sister-in-law Gail (Ron) Bondo-Reschly of South Bend, IN;  nieces and nephews.

Phyllis Jean Shavlik, age 79, of North Platte, passed away Wednesday August 15, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE.  Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday August 25, 2018 at Episcopal Church of Our Savior with Reverend Jeffrey Nelson officiating.  Inurnment  will be at a future date at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Neola, IA.

Joseph B. Virginia Marie Waechter

Virginia Marie Waechter, 94, of North Platte, departed this life on August 14, 2018 at Great Plains Health.  She was born on her father’s farm near St. Paul, NE on September 30, 1923, the tenth child of Anton “Tony” and Tekla (Gnaster) Cortas.  The Cortas family name was later changed to Curtis.  She attended common school at St. Anthony’s Catholic Parish in Farwell, and grade school at District 8 of Howard County.  In 1936, she moved with her parents to North Platte.  She attended St. Patrick’s High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1940.  She worked as a laundress at St. Mary’s Hospital, and later as a dental assistant to Dr. Fitzpatrick.

She was united in the Sacrament of Marriage by Fr. Patrick McDaid at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on December 2919, 1941 to Hilbert “Boss” Waechter.  They made their home farming near Hershey until moving to the Platte Valley School Community in 1947 to farm and ranch.   “Boss” passed away June 21, 1985, the result of a June 3, 1985, farming accident.  On August 22, 1995, she and Roscoe “Mike” Jordan eloped to marry at St. Charles Catholic Church in St. Francis, South Dakota.  “Mike” died August 25, 2006 of cancer.

Virginia was a member of St. Patrick’s Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, Without a Spouse, Platte Valley Women’s Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Eagles Shuffleboard Team, R.S.V.P., and a volunteer of the Bargain Bin and her Monday Pitch Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, “Boss” and “Mike”; daughter, Judy Krzykowski White; son, Jim Waechter; son-in-law, Ray Krzykowski; sisters, Maggie (Ed) Zalewski, Anna (John) Kowalski, Vic (Pete) Nowak, Lottie (Vince) Krzycki, Clara (Charles) Ford, Teresa (Art) McCormick; brothers, Ed (Tilly) Curtis, Roman (Dorothy) Curtis and Lloyd (Emma) Curtis.

Left to cherish her memory her son, Bill Waechter of Loveland, CO; daughter, Peggy (Jeff) Orr of North Platte; sister-in-law, Jane Johnson of North Platte; son-in-law, Bob White of North Platte; daughter-in-law, Connie Waechter-Yost and special “son-by-marriage” John “Earl” Yost of Sarasota, FL; special daughter-in-law, Daphne Airan (Jordan) of Lincoln, NE; goddaughters, Noreen Malchow, Joyce (Mike) Rice, and Suzie “Clint” Hebbert; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 8 great great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Rosary will be 7:00p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends, prior to the rosary. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with The Reverend Josh Brown and The Reverend Mark Seiker as con-celebrants.  Burial will be at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.
