Mary Louise Shanahan

Mary Louise Shanahan, 71, of North Platte, passed away May 25, 2018 at her home. Mary was diagnosed with COPD and emphysema and has fought a hard battle since.

She was born October 4, 1946, to Walter and Bernice (Hemphill) Riffe at Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Mary was one of three children, with  brother, Leroy  Riffe, who is in heaven now and sister, Judi Timko of North Platte. Later, she gained a stepmom and three half sisters, Barbara Ann, Jennifer and Judy.

She married Bill Shanahan on May 15, 1965. They had five children together which they raised in Simla, Colorado until 1984 and later moved to Bennett, Colorado until 2002.

Mary worked at Tomahawk Truck Stop in Watkins, Colorado for many years as a manager and bookkeeper which allowed her the flexibility of attending all of her kids’ functions and extra-curricular activities which she loved. She also did in home daycare for a few years.

Mary and Bill moved to Curtis in 2002, where she resided until moving in with her middle daughter, Kim, and her family in 2011.  Mary was a preschool/daycare teacher in Curtis also, which she loved.

Mary’s life was devoted to raising her children and enjoying time with her family. Her kids and grandchildren were the light of her life. While living in Colorado, she loved family trips to the mountains to camp and fish and attending horse and 4-H shows for her kids. She loved Saturday nights out in the country when all her kids and extended family came home to Bennett for her amazing cooking, playing cards and board games.  Mary always welcomed everyone into her home with open arms. This continued when she moved to Nebraska and the rest of her days were spent with family.

Survivors include  her husband; sons, Bill (Rosella) Shanahan Jr. and their children, Angie, Marcus, Gus, Megan and Will of Naples, Florida,  Mike (Olga) Shanahan, their children, Tyler and Kristen, of Belarus, Russia; daughters, Michelle (Glen) Owens and their children, Steph and Jenn of Marquez, Texas, Kim (Travis) Patch and their children, Colby, Wyatt, Kaitlyn, Mason and Gracie of North Platte, Melissa (Bill) Bordner of Bennett, Colorado; great grandchild, Spencer Lynn.

She was preceded in death by numerous family members including her Mom and Dad, one brother and her stepmom, Pat.

Peggy Joann McNeel

Peggy Joann McNeel, 83, of Lincoln, NE, formerly of Hershey, NE, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, in Ogallala, NE.

Peggy was born June 27, 1934, to Mollie Mae Bonta in Cherokee, AL, and they later moved to Nebraska where Peggy grew up in Hershey and graduated from Hershey High School in 1953. She went on to work at the Sutherland Nursing Home.

On November 7, 1954, Peggy married the love of her life, Vernon Austin McNeel, in Sutherland, where they made their home and raised two daughters, Ada Mae and Kay. In 1980 the couple moved to Lincoln with Vernon’s job at Consolidated Freightways. Peggy and Vernon enjoyed 59 years of marriage when he passed away in 2014.

Peggy was a strong Christian who attended the Velmont Kingdom Hall in Lincoln. She was a beautiful woman who never left the house without looking her absolute best; her hair and makeup was just right, she always had the best jewelry, and loved her Chanel No. 5 perfume. Peggy cherished her daughters and grandkids and was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandma and great-grandma. She has earned her wings and can now fly high like a butterfly.

Along with her beloved husband, Vernon, Peggy was preceded in death by her mother.

Survivors include her daughters, Ada (Terry) Hopken, of Ogallala and Kay McNeel, of Scottsdale, AZ; four granddaughters, LeDonna Spongberg and Gena Roth, of Scottsdale, AZ, Michelle Hopken, of Kearney and JoAnna and (Dr. Richard) Markiewicz, of North Platte; nine great- grandchildren, Blake, Gianna, Mikilos, Sienna, Savannah, Colin, Alexander, Rowan and Harper; brother, Frank (Joan) Bonta, of North Platte; brother-in-law, Russell McNeel, of Yuma, AZ; along with many other relatives and her cherished dear friends.

Graveside funeral service and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, 2018, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Vicar JA Welsh officiating. Jeanette Ione Cline

Jeanette Ione Cline, 74, longtime resident of North Platte, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, 29 May, 2018, at home surrounded by her family following a short courageous battle with cancer.

Jeanette was born the youngest of seven children to Everett Galen, Sr. and Fern Marguerite (Ulrich) Green on 14 July, 1943, at Kadoka, SD. She was raised on the family ranch northwest of White River, SD, later moving into White River with her parents where she graduated high school.

On 12 August, 1961, Jeanette married her high school sweetheart, Gary Lee Cline, at the Methodist Church in Murdo, SD, and to this union four children were born. Jeanette and Gary celebrated 56 years of marriage in 2017.

Jeanette donated blood and platelets for many years. She was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, NP Genealogical Society, Eastern Star, TOPS and Job’s Daughters where she was a Past Honored Queen. Her real love was family genealogy which she researched with a passion. Jeanette loved her family and will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Preceding Jeanette in death were her parents; sisters, Marguerite Oyler and Darlene Hutchinson; sister-in-law, Winnie Green; brother-in-law, Joe Oyler; and great-granddaughter, Emilia Clough.

Survivors include her husband, Gary, of North Platte; children, Kit (Ronda) Cline, of Rapid City, SD, Robin (Kent) Brown, of North Platte, Penny (Richard) Ball, of Wellfleet, NE, and Heath (Mary Jo) Cline, of Encampment, WY; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren with 3 more arriving this year; brothers, Everett Jr. (Arlene) Green and Gene Green, of White River, SD, Bob (Molly) Green, of Bellingham, WA, and Alan (Sandy) Green, of Valentine, NE; brother-in-law, Larry Hutchinson, of White River, SD; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

Ronald Leroy Vote

Ronald Leroy Vote, age 73, of rural Wallace, NE went home to heaven Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at home beside his loving wife, Mary.  Born an only child on March 26, 1945 in Colorado Springs, CO to Roy Vincent and Bertie Agnes (Clayburg) Vote, he lived the majority of his life on a small farm near Elbert, CO.  Ron graduated from Elbert High School in 1963 and was active in the Fondis Baptist Church.

In 1962 Ron asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior.  He attended Baptist College in Denver, CO. and surrendered his life to full time service for His Lord.  Also while at BBC he met the love of his life, Mary McAlary of Rifle, CO.  They were married August 31, 1968 at Alpha Baptist Church in Denver, CO.  August 31, 2018 would have been their 50th wedding anniversary.

Throughout Ron’s life, God used his talents to start churches, complete mission work, pastor churches, minister with music, and bless nursing home residents.

Ron loved the Lord.  He spoke fondly of his Savior often, sharing the hope of Christ with everyone.  He was unapologetic about his faith in Christ.  Many souls will be in heaven because of his faithfulness.  Ron loved spending time outside and always had some project to work on.  He loved working on the farm, fishing, and camping.  His family meant everything to him.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Wallace, NE; son, Michael (Sharon) Vote of Wallace, NE; daughter, Kayla (Landon) Hamby of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Caleb, Rebekah, and Anna Vote of Wallace, NE, and Bailey and Tyler Hamby of Tucson, AZ.; as well as in-laws siblings, niece, many cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Jean Marie Allen

Jean Marie Allen, age 82, of North Platte slipped peacefully into the presence of Jesus on May 26, 2018.  She was born September 24, 1935 to James and Nellie (Easton) Allen in their home in Frontier County, NE.

She spent 62 years of her life teaching school: one-room schools, and other schools in Cozad, NE and in North Platte, NE.  She said she taught over 1000 students and had many humorous stories to tell.  One in particular seemed to be her favorite: I questioned one little girl after recess.  “Did you have a good time?” “Oh yes,” replied the little girl.  “I swinged and swinged and now I have hemorrhoids.”

Jean also had a great love of horses and raised over 100 colts, several of which later became barrel racers.  She was a long time member of the Velvet Spurs.

Jean had many talents and abilities but the one that was the most financially rewarding was her leather tooling.  She made many belts, wallets, etc. including prizes for the Buffalo Bill rodeos and a guitar strap from a python snake skin for Garth Brooks.

Jean received Jesus as her Savior as a child and loved to share about His sacrifice on the cross and forgiveness of sin with all she knew and met.  She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and did volunteer teaching for several years at the Platte Valley Christian Academy.

Jean had a heart of compassion and gave of herself in whatever way needed to help others including hundreds of hours volunteering.

She is survived by three sisters, Marian Copeland of Eagle Butte, SD, Pauline (Gordon) Gaasch of Broken Bow, NE, and Marilyn (Darrell) Rowan of Hastings, NE; one brother, Jerry Allen of Simla, CO; sister-in-law, Margaret (Richard) Allen of Cambridge, NE; brother-in-law, Raymond (Barbara) Durner.; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews, plus a host of friends.  Her life touched SO many.  She will be greatly missed.

Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Richard Allen; sister, Barbara Durner; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Jerry) Allen; and brothers-in-law, Harold (Marian) Moore, and Vernon (Marian) Copeland.

Dennis R. “Denny” Evarts

Dennis R. “Denny” Evarts, 75, of North Platte, passed away May 24, 2018 at Great Plains Health.

He was born May 29, 1942 to Reed and Viola (Green) Evarts at Valentine, Nebraska. At 12 years old he delivered telegrams on his bike.

Denny graduated from North Platte High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Nancy Jurgens on January 19, 1964 in North Platte. He hired out as a switchman on the Union Pacific Railroad, retiring in 2002.  Denny also worked as a window washer for Sweetbrier, he worked at Self  Service Drug and was a surveyor for the State of Nebraska before hiring on at the railroad. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and the numerous trips he made to Wendover. He enjoyed the company of family and friends. Denny had many cherished friends that meant a lot to him and his family

Denny was a member of the Junior Oldtimers and at one time he served as president. He also was a member of the Eagles.

Denny is survived by his wife, Nancy Evarts of North Platte; sons, Gregg (Deanne) Evarts and Rick Evarts, both of North Platte; daughter, Jodi (Doug) Noseep of Billings, Montana; nine grandchildren, Rikki, Riley, Makenzie, Jetta, Jaxson, Baylee, Brody, Kennedie and Lexie; two great grandchildren, Alayna and Stella; brother-in-law, Tom Jurgens; sister-in-law, Connie Jurgens and other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carolyn Owings; grandson, Logan Fosbinder-Evarts; brother-in-laws, Jeff Jurgens and Doug Jurgens, Jr.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Marvin Keith Jensen

Marvin Keith Jensen, 77, of North Platte passed away May 24, 2018 at Stapleton, Nebraska.

He was born April 14, 1941, to Cornish and Dorothy (Brown) Jensen at Ellsworth, Kansas. They moved to Woonsocket, South Dakota when he was three, where he attended school and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1959.

He married Michele Authier of Woonsocket where they lived until 1965, when they moved to California. He and his family lived in Simi Valley, California from 1965 to 1972, where he worked for Vangas Propane Company as a serviceman and route supervisor. He also attended Moorpark City College at night for business management and also completed a service correspondence course.

In 1972, he and his family moved to Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he went to work for Northwestern Public Service Company in the service department. In 1974, he and his family transferred to North Platte, Nebraska where he retired as construction foreman for Northwestern Public Service, January 1, 2000.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and being with his children and great grandchildren. His family was always top priority.

Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey (Danine) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Clint (Jennifer) of North Platte; six grandchildren, Ryan, Jodi, Jennifer, Jason (Joana), Jordon, and Jessica; one brother, Gary (Lynn) Jensen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two sisters, Betty (Roger) Blankenship of Apache Junction, Arizona and Ada (Ciiff) Alt of Fresno, California; three great granddaughters, Maleia, Taylor and Ellie; three great grandsons, Adam, Nolan and Maddex; nine nephews and one niece.

He is preceded in death by his wife Michele, his parents; brother, Maurice; grandparents and one nephew.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Robin Storer officiating. Casket will be closed. Burial will be Thursday, May 31 at 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Marie Eveans

Marie Eveans passed away peacefully May 20, 2018, just days away from her 97th birthday, at The Lighthouse in Omaha.

She was born on May 28, 1921, to Minnie Ann (Eagle) Stone and Malcolm David Stone of Broken Bow, where she graduated high school in 1939. Marie went on to attend Denver Business College in Denver and then worked for an aviation school, where she met an instructor, Everett (Pat) Eveans. The two were married on March 1, 1941, in Sidney.

The couple lived in Denver, then moved to various cities including Salt Lake City, Chicago and Norman, Oklahoma, then to the Wichita, Kansas, area for 15 years. They later moved back to Nebraska, living in Broken Bow for a while before settling in North Platte.

The couple raised three sons and were married for 40 years when Everett died in 1981.

While in Nebraska, Marie worked for the Custer County Court and Lincoln County Court, working with Judge Earl Morgan and Judge Ron Ruff. She eventually retired in 1986.

After retiring, Marie volunteered at the North Platte hospital and gave more than 1,500 hours of her time to help others. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was active in the Triple M Sunday school class and other studies there, as well as Diamond K Kiwanis, Lake Maloney Golf Association and the aqua-size group at the Rec Center before moving to Omaha in 2008 to be closer to her sons and their families.

Along with her parents and husband, Everett, Marie was preceded in death by her son, Stephen; brothers, Leo Stone and Ira Stone; sisters, Doris Blixt and Muriel Crosland; and niece, Dori Lies.

She is survived by her sons, Mark (Deborah) Eveans of Olathe, Kansas, and Malcolm (Karen) Eveans of Lincoln; daughters-in-law, Diane Eveans of Omaha and Linda Eveans of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Sarah (Andrew) Clendenen of Dallas, Texas, Daniel Eveans of Omaha and Cassandra Eveans of San Francisco; great-grandchildren, Lucy and Andrew Clendenen; nephew, Leo Stone Jr. of San Diego, California; stepgrandchildren, Jenna (Robb) Lundberg of Milford, Kansas, and Daniel (Stephani) Jamar of Olathe, Kansas; step-great-grandchild, Roman Lundberg; and other family.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff for the care provided Marie during the 10 years of her residency at Lakeside Village and The Lighthouse and especially to Mary Brumbaugh of Omaha for her special care and companionship for Marie.
