Charles F. Putman

Charles F. Putman, age 82 of North Platte, passed away March 29, 2018 at Linden Court.

Charles was born August 21, 1935 in Kearney, NE to Francis and Reva (Glascock) Putman.  On October 13, 1953 he married Janice J. Prowett.  The couple resided in North Platte where Charles worked on the Union Pacific Railroad.  He hired on the section gang, worked as a switchman, yardmaster, train master, and then Assistant Superintendent of Bailey Yards.  Charles was a member of the First Christian Church, Masonic Lodge, Eagles Club, and Tehaman Temple.

Charles is survived by his daughters, Rae Jeanne (Ben) Swedberg and Rhonda K. (James) Quaney both of North Platte; 6 grandchildren, Brock (Amber) Swedberg of North Platte, Brady (Rebecca) Swedberg of Hershey, Brittni (Steven ) Fleer of Ord, Lindy (Josh) Hiatt of North Platte, Amy (Derek) Minshull of North Platte and Emily (James) McKain of North Platte; 11 great grandchildren, Jaxon, Lexi, Max, Carter, Haylee, Piper, Rayleigh, Mallory, McKenzie, Kendell, Sophia, Keegan, Alex, Drew, and T.J.; sister, Mary Ann (Randy) Hughes; special nieces, Tammy (Russ) Prock, and Kathy (Joe) Martinez; as well as other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Reva Putman; wife Janice; sons Randall C. and Robert F. Putman; great granddaughter Olivia R. Swedberg; and brother Tommie Joe Putman.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2018 at the First Christian Church with The Reverend Jan Ekstedt officiating.  Burial will follow at North Platte Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Saturday, March 31, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Lula Mae Zlomke

Lula Mae Zlomke, age 93, of North Platte, NE, passed away at Mountain Vista Senior Living Center in Wheat Ridge, CO, on Sunday, March 25, 2018.

Lula was born May 27, 1924, to Samuel Norman and Ida Maude (Lane) Manuel in New Bay, Newfoundland, Canada, where she grew up. After graduating high school in 1941, Lula moved to Boston, MA, where she earned her Nursing Degree in ’46. She worked in the Boston area for a while before moving to Alaska to provide nursing care to fishing crews in the Anchorage area.

While in Alaska, Lula met a young man from Nebraska, Maynard Wright Zlomke, who was working for the National Weather Service. Lula and Maynard were united in marriage on August 15, 1953, at the Methodist Church in Anchorage. They continued living in Anchorage until Maynard’s job took them to Kotzebue (north of the Arctic Circle), Idaho and Montana before settling in North Platte in 1963. The couple adopted their daughter, Lise, in 1958, and were married for 62 years when Maynard passed away in 2015.

Lula continued working as a registered nurse then went back to school to earn her Master’s Degree of Education from Kearney State College. She went on to be a nursing instructor at Mid-Plains Community College and taught until retiring.

Lula was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she and Lise were active in a circle with the UMW. She also enjoyed playing bridge and going to Jazzercise.

She is survived by her daughter, Lise Zlomke, of Brighton, CO; granddaughter, Tonya Townsend, and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Tiffany Townsend, all of North Platte; sister, Margie (Fred) Thomas, of Canada; brothers, Harold Manuel, of Newfoundland and Paul (Sharon) Manuel, of British Columbia; brother-in-law, Percy Moores, of Florida; as well as several nieces, nephews and other family.

Along with her husband, Maynard, Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Ida Manuel; and sisters, Una Cox and Bea Moores.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2018, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor Mark Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Ord Cemetery, Ord, NE. Steven John Shantz

Steven John Shantz, 52, of North Platte, NE, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Great Plains Health.

Steven was born October 1, 1965, to Robert Lloyd and Eunice Reina (Bleker) Shantz in Seattle, WA. He grew up in Washington State then following his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army in 1985. Steven served until ’87 then enlisted again and served from 1993-95.

Steven moved to North Platte after his discharge in ’87 and returned again following his second discharge, with a disability. In 2004 Steven married Karen Hoisington in Lexington and they made their home in North Platte. After Karen died in 2014, Steven met Ceceilia Lynn Richardson on a dating website. The two connected and after communicating for a year, they met face-to-face in 2016. They were united in marriage on April 11, 2017, in Lexington and lived in North Platte.

Steven enjoyed hunting and fishing when he could and had a strong connection to the Lord. He was a member of Cross of Christ and was inspired to spread the word of God to others on the computer. Steven was also concerned about his family and felt it was his responsibility to take care of them.

He leaves behind his wife, Ceceilia, and mother, Eunice Shantz, of North Platte; Allysa Hoisington Shantz, of Lexington, who he raised like a daughter; mother-in-law, Molly Richardson, stepdaughter, Tiffiny Richardson, and step-granddaughter, Kagome Richardson, all of Edgewood, TX; brothers, Timothy (Jodell) Shantz, of Omaha and Jeffrey Shantz, of North Platte; sisters, Valerie (Chuck) Wilson, of Elma, WA, and Paula Simonson, of Lynnwood, WA; as well as several nieces, nephews and other family.

Along with his first wife, Karen, Steven was preceded in death by his father, Robert Shantz, and father-in-law, Thomas Richardson.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Cross of Christ Revival Center with Pastor Dennis Leitner officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. “Joe” David C. Little Death Notice

“Joe” David C. Little, age 65 passed away Tuesday March 27, 2018 at Great Plains Health.  Cremation was chosen and services will be held at a later date.  Adams and Swanson Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Elnora Miller

Elnora Miller, 85 went to be with her Lord and Savior March 22nd, 2018.

She was born on May 14, 1932 to Helen and Reinhold Schortzmann and was raised in rural Alpena, South Dakota with her four sisters Ruth, Ida, Esther and Anne.  She graduated from Alpena High in 1950.

Elnora married the love of her life Dr. Thomas Miller on Aug 10, 1952 and they were married 65 years. To this union two daughters were born. Tamera (Tammy) who is married to Mike Daigle to whom was born Alexandra (Alex) of Aurora, CO. and daughter Dr. Renee who is married to Dr. Larry Piper to whom was born Garrett and Haley of North Platte, NE.

Elnora attended Dakota State in Madison, SD where she earned her teaching certificate. She loved teaching First grade and she taught in both Brookings, SD and Huron, SD. While Tom was in Dental School she worked at the Administrative Offices of UNL. She also was Tom’s Chairside Dental Assistant and Office Manager for over 35 years. Elnora and Tom lived in Huron SD, San Antonio TX, Colorado Springs CO, Leipheim Germany, and Lincoln NE before settling in North Platte NE in 1962.

Elnora was an active member of First Lutheran Church since 1962 and Ruth Circle. She was a member of Chapter AK P.E.O., a Camp Fire Blue Bird Leader, participated in Bible Classes, as well as belonging to many bridge clubs that kept her mind as sharp as a tack until the end. She loved to read, paint and travel but her greatest joy was traveling to Disney World with her grandchildren and watching them grow-up at the Lake. She was a cancer survivor of 14 years but in the end her cancer came back and took her life.

Elnora was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Thomas Miller, her parents Reinhold and Helen Shortzmann, In-Laws Glenn and Julia Miller, Sisters Ruth Judd and Ida Winter and brothers-in-law Bob Erickson and Curt Winter.

Elnora is survived by her two-daughters Tamera (Mike Daigle) Miller of Aurora, Co, Renee (Larry) Piper of North Platte, NE; Grandchildren Alex Daigle of Aurora, CO, Garrett and Haley Piper of North Platte, NE. Sisters Esther Erickson, Anne (Rich) Schultz, brother-in-law John (Darlene) Miller and several nieces and nephews.

Esther Sanchez Guerra

Esther Sanchez Guerra, age73 of North Platte passed away March 25, 2018 at her home.

Esther was born on November 26, 1944 in Sarbin, NE to Arnulfo and Soccoro (Salvador) Sanchez.  She grew up in North Platte.  Esther married Cecil Guerra “Buck” in 1965 and the two made their home in North Platte where she raised their 8 children.  Esther had an amazing faith base and her church was very important to her.  She was an excellent cook, who loved cooking for her family and friends with her specialty being her burritos!  Esther enjoyed doing hair and makeup, oldies music, she loved to dance and give dance lessons and liked tattoos.  The center of her life was her family, who she always put first.  She was truly the rock of her family.  She will be remembered as the best woman, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her children, Vicki (Jerry) Estrada of Lincoln, Mario (Olivia) Guerra of North Platte, Cecil (Sanjuanita) Guerra of Lincoln, Tracey (Javier) Hinojosa, Donna (Wesley) Kohl, Elizabeth (Alex) Tirado, Philip Guerra, Mario Sotelo, and Angelina Guerra all of North Platte; siblings, Richard (Vicky) Sanchez of Grand Island, Alex (Helen) Sanchez, Margaret Ramos, Mary (Johnnie) Serrano, Arnulfo “Sam” (Delia) Sanchez, Rosie (Santos) Castellanos all of North Platte, and Ofilia Leyva of Grand Island; sisters-in-law, Donna Sanchez, and Anita Sanchez; 31 grandchildren: and 51 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Cecil; 2 children, Manolito and Michael; granddaughter, Raquel Ann Estrada; grandson, Roy Hernandez; and siblings, Albert and Hank Sanchez, and Jessica Polanco.

Elnora Miller

Elnora Miller, 85, of North Platte, died March 22, 2018, at Great Plains Health. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 30, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m., on Thursday, March 29, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda E. Smith

Wanda E. Smith, 94, formerly of Mullen, passed away Jan. 28, 2018, at Sutherland Care Center.

Wanda was born on May 22, 1923, to Clifford L. and Leona (Knight) Middaugh in Cody. She attended a country school and then school in Whitman before graduating from Gordon High School in 1940. After graduating, she taught home school for two years.

In August 1943, she traveled to California, where Allen Smith was stationed in the U.S. Army. They were married on Aug. 29, 1943, in Carson City, Nevada. In December 1943, Allen’s outfit was moved to Camp Bowie, Texas, and Wanda went to Mullen to live with Allen’s family. To this union three children were born, a daughter, Gloria Anne, and sons, John Joseph and James Allen.

After Allen’s discharge from the U.S. Army, they spent about four months in Casper, Wyoming, before returning to Mullen, where Wanda worked in the Mullen Café until she and Allen bought the beer parlor in 1952, which they ran for 19½ years. After selling the beer parlor, Wanda went to work for Macke’s grocery store, Dutton’s grocery, and in September 1976, she took a job as assistant village clerk in Mullen. She spent 11 years at the village office, retiring in 1988 as village clerk.

In Mullen, she belonged to the Episcopal Church, American Legion Auxiliary, ECW and Pioneer Memorial Auxiliary. She volunteered for the Legion Auxiliary, the rest home and participated in several other community events and activities.

In June 2002, Allen and Wanda moved to North Platte. Due to Allen’s health issues, he passed away Aug. 22, 2002.

In North Platte, Wanda attended the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, and joined St. Bridget’s Guild, R&R Card Club and RSVP. She volunteered two to three days a week at the Thrift Connection Store and RSVP until she was 87. She spent a year at Premier Estates Assisted in North Platte before moving to the Sutherland Care Center in January 2017.

Wanda was a gifted artist and painted several pictures on canvas and old sawblades, as well as burnt many scenes into wood for family and friends, and most recently made jewelry for her loved ones while in the care center. Wanda’s love of art and creativity has been instilled in her children and grandchildren.

Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; sister, Elsie Jane Hough; and parents, Clifford and Leona Middaugh.

Survivors include her brother, Ted (Chris) Middaugh of Reno, Nevada; daughter, Gloria Blakely of North Platte; sons, John Smith of Sutherland, and James (Grant) Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren with another on the way; and nieces, nephews and several cousins.

Memorials are suggested to the Sutherland Care Center, Cedar View Cemetery in Mullen or the donor’s choice.

Inurnment will be at noon on Saturday, April 7, at Cedar View Cemetery, Mullen. Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Ennis McEntire “Pop”

Arthur Ennis McEntire “Pop”, age 72, of North Platte passed away Friday March 23, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Art was born July 2, 1945 in North Platte to Coyton and Florence (Campbell) McEntire.  He worked as a painter and other jobs before hiring on with UPRR In 1976.   He was also an ordained minister with the Assembly of God Churches. He loved to read the Bible and studied it tirelessly.  Pop loved the great outdoors and passed his love of nature on to his children and the generations that followed.   On October 8, 1962 he married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Stubbs in North Platte.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia of North Platte; children, Lori (Patrick) Clinch, Patti (Pat) Condon, and Misti (Michael Torres) McEntire all of North Platte; brother, Rick McEntire of North Platte; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jean Triplett of North Platte, and Delores Buell of California; brother-in-law, Bill Olson of North Platte; and numerous other family members and friends; not to mention his beloved dog, Gizmo (aka Geeters McLadd).

He was preceded in death by his parents Coyton and Florence McEntire; his beloved son, Artie in August of 2016; nephew Dustin McEntire; and brother, Timmy McEntire.
