DeWayne Harold Alexander

DeWayne Harold Alexander, 87, of Gothenburg, passed away March 16, 2018, at his home with his family by his side.

DeWayne was born on July 31, 1930, in Holdrege to Ray and Nora (Green) Alexander. He attended school in Holdrege and graduated from Holdrege High School in 1948.

After graduation, he attended college at the University of Nebraska and Hastings College.

On Jan. 9, 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the USS Albuquerque (PF-7) and later transferred to the USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884). DeWayne was a gunner mate and stood embassy watch for two years in Hong Kong. DeWayne was given an honorable discharge on Nov. 1, 1954.

DeWayne married Cathryn Darlene Lindstrom in Las Vegas, Nevada. To this union three children were born: Judy, Ron and Jill. They lived in Holdrege and North Platte before settling in Gothenburg, where he lived for 56 years. He worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and later Quest, retiring in 1985.

DeWayne was an avid sports fan. He loved to play and watch all kinds of sports. He played football for Holdrege High School and Nebraska University. He was chosen as athletic king at Holdrege High School. From a young age, he attended many Nebraska football games with his parents, and he even had tickets for the original seats his parents owned.

DeWayne loved to hunt and fish and took many trips to Alaska, Canada, South Dakota, Minnesota and all over Nebraska to fish with his son and friends. He loved to share his fishing knowledge and found great joy in teaching and taking his grandchildren fishing.

Golf was another passion of DeWayne’s. He loved to golf and was crowned Gothenburg City Champion for many years. He passed this love of golf on to his family. DeWayne and his son, Ron, were the first father and son to win titles of Gothenburg City Golf Champions.

DeWayne was a member of the American Lutheran Church, American Legion and Gothenburg Golf Association.

DeWayne was preceded in death by his parents; sister, DoraDean (Joe) Robinson; brother, William Alexander; brothers-in-law, Gerald Lindstrom, Wally Brown, Elliott Olesen and Richard Gloor; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Gloor and Ilene Brown; and his father- and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Elsie (Urbom) Lindstrom.

He is survived by his wife; son, Ron Alexander of Gothenburg; daughters, Judy (Rod) Jobman of Oviedo, Florida, and Jill (Ed) Sowders of Tryon; grandchildren, RJ Jobman of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Ryan (Karen) Jobman of Atlanta, Georgia, Alison (Zane) Piehl of North Platte and Jacob (Raegan) Sowders of Wichita, Kansas; great-grandchildren, Avery Jobman, Blayden Piehl and Carson Kaye Sowders; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21, at the American Lutheran Church with Pastor Jon Mapa officiating. Burial will follow at the Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. Visitation will from 1-8 p.m., with the family present from 5-7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 20, at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, which is in charge of arrangements.

Evelyn Adeline Westphal

Evelyn Adeline Westphal, of Citrus Heights, California, went to sleep in Jesus on Feb. 17, 2018.

She went to Platte Valley School before going to North Platte High School and graduated class of 1943.

She excelled at typing and shorthand. She worked for the Crosby law office in North Platte.

After World War II ended, she met Ross Westphal of North Platte on Oct. 31, 1946. After a brief courtship, they were married on March 16, 1947. A few years later, after the births of their two children, they decided to move to California.

In 1956, they settled in Santa Monica for two years, Canoga Park for two years and Dinuba for three years. Lastly, they moved to Citrus Heights, a suburb of Sacramento. All during this time, she worked as a secretary/stenographer to help support her family. She worked for the state of California for 10 years, retiring in 1973.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her beloved son, Ross Hans Westphal; brother, Russell (Jane) Lorentzen, and their daughter, Cheryl Graham; brother, Bob Lorentzen; sister, Wanda Young; beloved parents, Hans and Myrtle Lorentzen.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Ross; daughter, Rebecca; grandchildren in order from oldest to youngest and great-grandchildren listed with their parent: Chris Westphal, son Thor. Laurie Pace, daughter Allyssa, Jennifer Martin, Randy Westphal, David Hernandez, daughter Kaylynn, Denica Davin, son Jackson, Jeff Hawkins. Also her brother, Ron (Agnes) Lorentzen; sister-in-law, Gloria Lorentzen; nieces, Deanna Brummet, Barbara Hempe, Lisa Bebbs, Christen Caldwell, Lynette McCammon; nephews, Larry Young, Dennis Young, Eric Lorentzen, Rob Lorentzen.

Services will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, Rosville Seventh Day, 914 Cirby Way, Citrus Heights. Inurnment will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 26, at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.

Roland Stanley Coker

Roland Stanley Coker, age 89, of North Platte, NE, died Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Great Plains Health.

Roland was born June 2, 1928, the only son of Mainard Peyton and Edith (Brown) Coker in Sutherland, NE, where he grew up. Roland graduated from Sutherland High School then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he earned his BA degree.

Roland proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in England and at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. Following his discharge in 1954, Roland returned to Nebraska and went to work for the U.S. Postal Department in North Platte. He worked for the post office until retiring in 1988 as Director of Finance.

On May 6, 1956, Roland was united in marriage to Yolanda Davis in North Platte where they made their home. The couple had two sons, Daniel and Scott, and were married for 41 years when Yolanda died in 1995.

Roland was involved in the North Platte community and with various organizations. He served as Scout Master when the boys were younger and later belonged to the North Platte Woodcarvers and the Senior Center where he was on the Community Action Partnership Board of Directors. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church and P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion.

Roland was an active member of Platte Valley Lodge #32 AF&AM where he served as Treasurer from 2007 until his death. He also belonged to the North Platte Shrine Club, Euphrates Chapter 15, Zabud Council 6, Palestine Commandery 13, North Platte York Rite and Tehama Shrine. Roland enjoyed participating in the various activities of the Masonic Temple and Shrine Club, whether it was a corn feed, parade or fundraiser, Roland was there to help. He was also a proud veteran who volunteered with the North Platte Veterans’ Honor Guard. Roland liked visiting with people and always had a story or two to share.

He is survived by his sons, Daniel (Sheila) Coker, of Blair, NE, and Scott Coker, of North Platte; and other family.

Along with his wife, Yolanda, Roland was preceded in death by his parents, Mainard and Edith.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial Service will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Inurnment with military honors and Masonic Rites will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Senior Center or the church. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.

Rosella M. Meier

Rosella “Zell” M. Meier, 74, of Kearney died Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at her home.  She was born November 27, 1943 in Kearney to Gilbert and Esther (Schake) Zimmerman. She grew up in Kearney and attended Zion Lutheran Grade School then graduated from Kearney High School. She then graduated from Kearney State College in 1965 and taught school in Minden for 2 years.

On June 4, 1969 she married William “Bill” Meier in Kearney. She obtained her Master’s Degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln, and then taught Physical Education at Kearney State College.

In 1969 Rozella was hired as the first volleyball coach at Kearney State College. When she retired after 24 years of coaching in 1993, her teams had compiled a 643 – 228 record. Her 643 victories are 10th on the all-time coaching list of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In 1988, she was one of the first five to be inducted into the NAIA Volleyball Hall of Fame.

After retirement from UNK Rozella worked with her husband as owners and operators of Zimmerman Printers in Kearney until they sold the business in 2006. At that time, she and her husband became interested in country dancing, and then taught country dance at the college.  In 2007, Rozella and Bill opened Meier’s Ballroom in Gibbon where they taught country line dancing and hosted many events. The last function at the ballroom before they sold it in 2017 was to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Rozella was a member of First Lutheran Church in Kearney and she and her husband enjoyed traveling and motorcycle riding.

Surviving relatives include her husband Bill of Kearney; her daughters, Kelli Meier of Phoenix, AZ and Kambi Jecminek and husband Nathan and grandchildren Taylor and Maximus of Denver.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at First Lutheran in Kearney. Rev.’s Michelle and Rick Carlson will officiate and burial will be at Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is planned Friday, March 23rd, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home in Kearney.

Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church or the University of Nebraska Foundation to support volleyball scholarships at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Cleona D. Douglas

Cleona D. Douglas, 83, of Ogallala, passed away March 10, 2018, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

Cleona was born on May 6, 1934, in Denmark, Nebraska, to Ralph and Irene (Thomsen) Gutherless. She graduated from Maxwell High School with the class of 1952.

Shortly after graduation, Cleona married Reinhold Heil. The couple made their home south of North Platte, and their union was blessed with two children, Randy and Roxie. Reinhold passed away in 1985. Cleona would eventually marry Pete Norman Douglas in 1987, and they made their home in North Platte. In 2013, Cleona moved to Ogallala to be closer to her family.

Cleona was active in the VFW and Cootie Club. For many years, Cleona helped with the VFW-sponsored Easter egg hunt at Cody Park. She loved gardening, sewing, canning, playing cards, as well as crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

Cleona was preceded in death by her parents and both of her husbands.

Survivors include her children, Randy (Ellen) Heil of North Platte and Roxie (Neil) Breece of Ogallala; grandchildren, R.C. (Christian) Heil and Michael (Stephanie) Heil, both of North Platte, Amanda (Adam) Peters of Ogallala, Lyndsey (Cody) Phillips of Hastings, Mandy (special friend, Clay Fraser) Breece of Brule and Jase (special friend, Lindsey) Breece of Lincoln; three sisters, Lucille Meyer of Scottsbluff, Eunice Masters and Bunny (Floyd) Bokoskie, both of North Platte; sister-in-law, Kate Wingett; brother-in-law, Dale (Carol) Douglas of North Platte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Beverly Jean Dailey

Beverly Jean Dailey, 83, of Arnold, passed away March 10, 2018, at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth.

Beverly Jean Dailey was born on April 17, 1934, to Clifford J. and B. Faye (Brummet) Kramer in Stapleton. She attended Hoagland Country School in eastern Logan County and graduated from Logan County High School in 1951.

She was united in marriage to Donald Dale Dailey on Aug. 20, 1953, in Fort Riley, Kansas. They lived on area ranches until 1976, when they moved east of Gandy on the farm where she was raised. She helped her husband on the farm and especially enjoyed taking care of the pigs they raised. In 1982, she lost her hand in a farm accident but continued to help with the farm work. With God’s help, she was able to overcome her loss and accept it, not letting this change her outlook on life.

They semi-retired in 1996 and moved to Arnold in 2002. She was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Zion Lutheran Church in Arnold. Beverly enjoyed crocheting making afghans for her grandchildren and Christmas stockings for all of her great-grandchildren. Beverly was generous with her time, volunteering for many community activities and events.

Beverly and Don enjoyed camping with family and many trips to visit extended family. Beverly’s greatest joy was her large family because being an only child, she always wanted a big family.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; an infant brother, Kenneth Joe; and son, Alan Brock.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years; three sons, Daniel (Jo) of Long Pine, Clifford (Pat) of Hyannis and Lemoyne (Rhonda) of Thedford; daughter-in-law, Becky of Arnold; 14 grandchildren, Danielle (Cam) Palmer of Ainsworth, Dirk (Jami) Dailey of Hartington, Dane (Kelsey) Dailey, Dustin (Mattee) Dailey, all of Long Pine, Warren (Jackie) Dailey of Sundance, Wyoming, Lara (Ben) Hager of Torrington, Wyoming, Jeremiah (Crystal) Dailey of Johnston, Emily (Jim) Stacey of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Kaman (Klara) Dailey of Stapleton, Seth (Cassie) Dailey, Andrew Dailey and Matthew Dailey, all of Thedford, Brock (Robin) Dailey and Lindy (Della) Dailey, both of Arnold; 27 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Earl (Ila) Dailey of Arnold; sister-in-law, Ester Webster of North Platte; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Arnold Fire Department or Callaway District Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 16, at the Arnold First Baptist Church. Family burial will be prior to services. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6-7 p.m., on Thursday, March 15, at the Arnold Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

George M. Welsh Sr.

George M. Welsh Sr., 91, retired Postmaster, has a permanent change of address, Heaven. His time on earth expired March 10th, 2018 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen. He looked forward to this final promotion. George was born on January 8, 1927 in Brule, marrying Mac McDermott on December 4th 1948. George was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years; his son, Stephen, martyred for Christ in the jungles of Columbia, SA; his parents, & many family members and life-long friends. George is survived by his children: George Jr. (Sandy) of Cozad, NE, Betty (Chuck) Wretling of Littleton, CO, Peggy (Brad) Porath of Mullen, NE & Patricia (Alan) Kackmeister of Austin, TX, 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren; sister, Alice Baily; sister-in-law, Betty Halsey; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Jesus is his Master.

Jeffrey M. Engdahl

Jeffrey M. Engdahl, 46, of Omaha, died March 11, 2018 in his home surrounded by his family after an 8 month battle with cancer. Jeff was born to Jack D. and Patricia E. (Barney) Engdahl on December 24, 1971. Jeff attended North Platte Public Schools, graduating in 1990. He attended college at Nebraska Wesleyan, University of Nebraska at Kearney and University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he finished in 1998 earning his BA in Business. He worked in the financial industry for most of his career, serving the needs of customers as a mortgage lender most recently with Access Bank in Omaha, NE.

Jeff was married to Holly McDermott in 2000 and to this union a daughter, Chloe Belle, was born. Later divorced, Jeff and Holly remained the best of friends and always placed the needs of Chloe before themselves. The greatest love of his life was his daughter, Chloe Belle. He adored watching her participate in basketball, some golf and her greatest joy, competitive volleyball. He was so proud of his beautiful daughter.

Jeff’s other interests include his incredible passion for golf. He excelled in competitive golf at both the high school and college level. He was also a diehard fan of Nebraska Huskers Football and Creighton Blue Jays Basketball teams. He was a member of Rejoice Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE.

Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents: Marlin & A.O. Engdahl and William Barney.

He is survived by his parents: Jack D. and Patricia E. (Barney) Engdahl of Lincoln, NE, daughter: Chloe Belle Engdahl of Omaha, NE, sister: Joy K. Podliska, her husband Shane and their children Riley, Connor and Grace of Lincoln, NE. brother: Jon K. Engdahl, his wife Casey and their daughter Maddison of Lincoln, NE, and his grandmother: Verna Barney of Kearney, NE, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 16, at Rejoice Lutheran Church, 2556 S. 138th St., Omaha. Burial will be at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 16, at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln.
