Lloyd Alden Connell

Lloyd Alden Connell, 98, of Tryon passed away February 20, 2018 at Linden Court in North Platte.  Lloyd was born on December 7, 1919 on the family homestead in rural McPherson County to Michael and Elisabeth (Waits) Connell.

He attended school at district #9 in rural McPherson County. He lived and was raised on the original homestead all his life until 2002 when they moved into Tryon.  On December 3, 1944 he married Flora Lutes.  To this union, one daughter Ruth was born.  Flora and an infant daughter passed away on December 26, 1946.  On July 20, 1952, Lloyd Married Cleao F. Avery in North Platte.  To this union, a daughter Sharlene was born.

Lloyd worked for Tom Kemp drilling wells, was an ASCS surveyor in McPherson County, and worked for Ron Paxton for many years.  He grew up going to Gospel Ridge Sunday School, loved to play horseshoes (winning many tournaments), played baseball in his younger years, and loved the ranch life, with his horses and cattle.  He raised lots of sweet corn and regular corn, enjoyed cattle drives, crossing rivers on horseback, hunting rattle snakes, and roping ground squirrels. Lloyd also enjoyed brandings and roped many calves in and out of branding corrals. He carried rural mail for 29 years with Cleao at his side.  Lloyd was always a good neighbor and friend, helping anyone he could.

Survivors include his wife, Cleao of Tryon, daughters, Ruth (Kenneth) Gage, and Sharlene (Blaine) Rodewald all of Maxwell; grandchildren, Rodney (Pam) Gage of Gothenburg, Pamela (Shane) Harlin of North Platte, Shannon (Michael) Dickman of Gambrills, MD, Anthony (Jennifer) Rodewald of McCook, Jerome (Bernice) Gage of Tucson, AZ, Leland (Jenny) Rodewald of Holdrege, and Andrew (Ashley) Rodewald of Sidney; great-grandchildren, Nichole, Misty, Dylan, Jessica, Elisabeth, Emily, Graydon, ElsiAnna, Kailynn, Erin, Samantha, Lyndon, Blake, Brom, and Graeme; great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Ivan, Joseph, and Alvina; sisters-n-law Helen Brooks, Lila Brooks both of Cozad, Gloria Marlin of Gothenburg, Wanda Connell of Kenesaw, and Twyla (Dean) Connelly of Brady; and numerous other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flora; infant daughter, Flora Mary; in-laws, Walter and Laura Avery, Siblings, William, Bernard, Wayne, Dan, Malcolm, Eva Smith, Louelva Hatch, Myrtle Gragg, Martha Gressley, and Dorothy Haney; and a great-great-granddaughter, Gretchen.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the McPherson County High School in Tryon with the Reverend Bob Townsend officiating.  Burial will follow at Miller Cemetery.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Nita Delisa Madagame

Nita Delisa Madagame, formerly of North Platte, passed away Thursday February 15, 2018 at her home in Colorado.

Nita was born December 19, 1956 in Omaha, NE to Edmund and Lupe (Dominguez) Madagame.  She attended school in North Platte and Lincoln, graduating from Lincoln High School.  She worked at a nursing home in Lincoln for a short time before returning to North Platte where she married Narciso Torres.  The couple remained in North Platte where Nita managed motels for many years.  She enjoyed her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Nita is survived by her son Narciso “Cecil” Torres, Jr. of North Platte; grandchildren Ariah and Javien Perez of Lincoln; siblings Sharon Sandoval of Las Cruses, NM, David (Michelle) Dominguez of Raleigh, NC, Rita (Mark) Hernandez of North Platte, Tony Madagame of Las Vegas, NV, Tim Madagame of Sturgis, SD, Michael (Angie) Vieyra of Kearney and Valentino Madagame of Grand Island; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and special friends Howard Simpson of North Platte, Leslie “Duke” Dauphin of Colorado and Colleen Davis of North Platte.

She was preceded in death by her parents Edmund and Lupe Madagame; husband Narciso; and sister Marsha Moreno.

George A. Matthews

George A. Matthews, age 97, of North Platte, passed away February 16, 2018 at Chase County Hospital. He was born on July 15, 1920 at McCook, NE to George W. and Mary (Hyatt) Matthews. He served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1946. George later married Lavon Smith. He was an over the road truck driver for Consolidated Freightways for many years. Bryon Douglas True

Bryon Douglas True, age 67, of Sutherland, NE, was at home surrounded by his family when he went to his Heavenly home after a battle with cancer on Monday, February 19, 2018.

Bryon was born September 28, 1950, to Dewey Bert and Velda Louise (Rose) True in Bloomfield, NE, where he grew up. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1969.

Bryon went to work for Central Nebraska Telephone Company in Grant, NE, then a job promotion transferred him to the Sutherland community in ’74. He continued working for the phone company as the Local Manager until retiring in 2010. After retiring, Bryon took a job with the Sutherland Public Schools. He worked as a janitor for the next six years and got to know the students and school staff, which he really enjoyed.

On October 16, 1971, Bryon was united in marriage to Patsy L. Coke, in Bloomfield. The couple was blessed with three children, Jason, Jedidiah and Julie, and nearly 47 years of marriage. The family enjoyed camping, boating and skiing (snow and water) together.

Bryon was active in the Sutherland community. He served on the Youth Board and coached youth sports. He also served on the Village Board from 1982-1990 and as chairman from ’86-’88, the School Board for a term, was a past member of the Lion’s Club, and a member of the Sutherland United Methodist Church where he also served on various committees.

When he wasn’t working, Bryon enjoyed hunting, fishing and kayaking. In 2009, he, Patsy and Julie went on a mission trip to Kenya with the church. Bryon loved his family and was a proud Papa to his grandkids, Trystan and Teagan. He will be greatly missed.

He leaves behind his wife, Patsy, of Sutherland; children, Jason True, of Sutherland, Jedidiah (Jenn) True, of Kearney, NE, and Julie Anne True, of Scottsbluff, NE; two grandchildren, Trystan Tre True and Teagan Tre True; sister, Joan (Larry) McCoy, of Wamego, KS; niece, Kate, and nephew, Mitch; great-nephew, Cameron; and other family.

Bryon was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Velda; and sister, Jolene True.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Sutherland United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, south of Sutherland. The casket will be closed.

The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com, prior to the service at the church, or from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the church, Callahan Cancer Center or FOWCUS, to help support orphans in Kenya.

Carrol Roy “Red” Hiatt, Jr.

Carrol Roy “Red” Hiatt, Jr., age 59 of North Platte, died February 18, 2018 at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Kearney. Carrol was born on February 25, 1958 to Carrol Sr. and Joan (Johnston) Hiatt in North Platte where he grew up. He loved anything with wheels, building his first 56 Ford pick-up at the tender age of 14, and customizing many vehicles and Harleys. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1979, took welding, upholstery, and wood working classes at Mid-Plains Community College.  He worked for Carrol Sr. as a mechanic, Hinky Dinky, Safeway Foods, and Gerald Gentleman Power Plant in Sutherland. Carrol also hired out on the UPPR in 1997. He built his own tow trucks and operated Carrol’s Towing. He did not have idle hands, and up until his death was working on a customized “49” Mercury along with a “71” Cuda Convertible. On October 24, 1979, he married the love of his life, Joann K. Shirley in North Platte. Carrol was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and was baptized on October 1993. Red’s favorite verses in the bible were Rev 21:3,4 and Romans 7:25 for the ransom of Jesus. He knew by meditating appreciatively on it, the ransom touches our hearts, drawing us ever closer to God. Carrol had many friends he will miss and had an infectious smile.

Survivors include his parents, Carrol R. Sr. and Joan Hiatt, wife of 39 years, JoAnn K. Hiatt, son, Matthew, granddaughter, Harper Jane Powers, all of North Platte, and all his furry four legged friends. Services will be 11:00 am Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 621 West Phillip Ave, North Platte. Norma Jean Peterson

Norma Jean Peterson, age 84, of North Platte, passed away February 18, 2018 at North Platte Care Center. She was born May 29, 1933 at Hayes Center, NE to John and Elva (Scott) Curran. Norma Jean graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Marvin D. Peterson on May 3, 1950. She received her LPN license and worked at Bethesda Care Home, Memorial Hospital, and later Great Plains Health. Norma Jean was an excellent seamstress, making wedding dresses, suits, drapery, and over 60 quilts. Her main passion in life was her faithfulness to Christ and to her loving family.

She is survived a son, Douglas D. (Brenda Grant) Peterson; two daughters, Debbie (Rod) Miller and Pamela Peterson all of North Platte; brother, Donnie Curran of Hayes Center, sister, Rosabelle Repass of McCook, sisters-in-law, Jane Peterson of Texas and Marilyn Peterson of Cozad Barbara Gigax of Hayes Center; grandchildren, Michael (Christy) Miller, John (Jodi) Miller, Sunny (Josh) Yocum-Whitmore; great grandchildren, Micah, Shayla, Tanner, Shaylee, Jaden, Gage, Caden, Allie, Connor, Declan, Graham, Carrissa, Midgey and Myah; great-great grandchildren, Torran, Tracen and Easton; cousins, Jim Lewis, Dean Scott, and Alfred Scott, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers-in-law, Robert Repass, Richard Peterson, Charles “Whitey” Peterson, and Boyd Gigax. Services will be 11:00 am Friday, February 23, 2018 at Parkview Community Church of the Nazarene. Barbara Jean Marie Krueger

Barbara Jean Marie Krueger passed away February 19, 2018.  Barbara was born September 26, 1929 at Norfolk, NE, to Willard and Leotha (Donner) Krueger.  She attended public and parochial schools, living in Norfolk until June 6, 1954 when she married Roy E. Workman. They moved to West Point where Roy was employed with the railroad.  Later that year they moved to North Platte where Roy was employed at the Post Office.

Barbara enjoyed gardening and sharing produce with friends.  She was known for her homemade grape jelly.  She also enjoyed camping, fishing and walking, and was an avid bowler until developing health problems.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she volunteered in the office, sang in the choir, provided Sunday child care, purchased supplies for the Women’s group and delivered baby blankets to newborns.  She and Roy set up for many receptions at the church.  She was also a member of a ladies Aquacize group (Waterlilies) for many years and the Eagles Club.

Barbara was preceded in death by Roy, her husband of 52 years; parents; sister, Jeannette Jensen;  and son Larry in 1963.  Survivors include a niece, Bobbijo (Wil) LeBlanc of Mt. Vernon, Washington, a cousin, Doris Hilgert of Norfolk, NE; special friends, John and Peggy Martin, Milo and Phyllis Shavlik, Brenda Anderson, and Dennis Pannasky.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at First Evangelical  Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Berke officiating.  Burial will be at Floral Lawns.  Memorials are suggested to First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Victor A. Hormandl

Victor A. Hormandl, age 92, was born July 31, 1925 at Swanton, NE to Anton and Francis (Pavlik) Hormandl along with his twin-sister Victoria Hormandl. He went to be his Lord on February 16, 2018. Victor was a loving husband, father and Grandfather. Victor served in the US Army in November of 1945 and served with Company B 67th Armored Tank Battalion 2nd Armored Division in the Aleutian Islands during WWII after graduation from high school. After returning home, he helped his father on the family farm in Swanton. Later enrolled at the University of Nebraska. In recent years he has owned and operated several businesses in North Platte.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ladd, Anton, Mike, and Aldrich Hormandl, sisters, Olga Pivonka, Victoria Hormandl, and Velesta Kubicek.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, son, Gary (Linda) Hormandl, daughter, Susie (Gary) Huber, grandson, Tony (Lindsay) Hormandl, and great-grandsons, Brixton and Brooks Hormandl. Services will be 1:00 pm Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Carpenter Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell with military honors.
