Joanne Margaret Lawrence
Joanne Margaret Lawrence, 89, formerly of North Platte, passed away Feb. 12, 2018, at her home in Cibolo, Texas.
Joanne was born in Omaha, on Nov. 13, 1928, to Max and Josephine Rich.
She married James Sanford Lawrence in 1949 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and they were blessed with five children. They moved to North Platte in 1969 where Joanne had various jobs over the years.
Joanne and Jim were later divorced and Joanne moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1994. Joanne returned to North Platte in 2011 where she lived until 2015. At that time, she moved to Cibolo, to live with her daughter and son-in-law who took amazing care of her until her death. Joanne was very active with her family, friends and church.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents and son, David Lynn Lawrence.
She is survived by her children, James K. Lawrence of Bellevue, Tim (Shirley) Lawrence of Lonoke, Arkansas, Mark (Mona) Lawrence of North Platte, and Kathy (Rick) Gold of Cibolo; her brother, James Baudo of Omaha; 11 grandchildren, Kimber (Amy) Lawrence, Victoria (Chris) Burroughs, Bryan (Rena) Lawrence, Amy (CW) Schonemann, David (Dustia) Lawrence, Devon Griffiths, Danial (Jessica) Lawrence, Derek Larson, Joshua Hedgepeth, Whitney (Brad) Schunek, and Christopher Hedgepeth; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her beloved pet, Sparky.
Cremation was chosen. A family celebration of life service will be at a later date.

Marjorie A. Halverson Taylor
Marjorie A. Halverson Taylor, 93, of North Platte passed away February 14, 2018 with family by her side. She was born on a farm near Cedar Rapids, Nebraska on April 1, 1924 to Harrison and Mable Hartford. When she was seven years old, the family moved to a farm near Primrose, Nebraska, where she went to a country school and then graduated from Primrose High School in 1941 with 15 kids in her graduating class. After graduating from Primrose High School, she moved to North Platte and started working for Union Pacific Railroad at the round house as a laborer from 1942 – 1947. She was one of the very first female employees to work in a steam locomotive shop in the country. On February 10, 1947, she married Richard Halverson, this union was blessed with six children. In 1963, Marjorie started working for Linden Manor Nursing Home, she worked there for 26 years until 1989. Marjorie’s immediate and extended family is what she loved most. Marjorie was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of North Platte where all of their children attended Sunday school, Catechism and became members of the church. She was involved with Buffalo elementary PTA along with always being a room mother. Along with working, Marjorie stayed busy with all the sports and various activities the children were involved in. Marjorie’s real love and passion was sewing, specifically making quilts and baby blankets. She has made well over two hundred and would make either one for anyone who would ask her. She loved being with family along with going with any family member to any family function such as picnics and reunions. Besides making her quilts and baby blankets, Marjorie will best be remembered for being a kind person, who would do anything to help someone who needed it. Richard passed away in 1987. Marjorie married Wayne Taylor in 1989, they enjoyed each other and went dancing 4 -5 times a week. Marjorie loved to dance. Wayne passed away in 2005.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; husband, Wayne; a son, Douglas Halverson; brothers, William Hartford and Robert Hartford; sisters, Mildred Douty, Irene Loeffler, Dorothy Ostendorf and Darlene Schick.
Marjorie is survived by four sons, William (Peggy) Halverson of North Platte, Robert (Barbara) Halverson of North Platte, Michael (Diana) Halverson of North Platte and Rodney Halverson of Blue Hill, Nebraska; daughter Pamela (Tim) Feeney of North Platte; thirteen grandchildren; twenty nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; brother, Thomas (Donna) of Kearney; brother-in- law, Henry Schick; sister-in-law, Ruth Hartford; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be atthe North Platte Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 16, at Carpenter Memorial Chapel which is in care of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice. John Albert Scharf
John Albert Scharf, 87, of Curtis, died Feb. 6, 2018, at Parson’s House in Omaha. John died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
John was born on Aug. 20, 1930, in Curtis to William Adam Scharf and Florence Beatrice (Skaife) Scharf. He graduated high school in 1947 from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. John attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was on the varsity wrestling team and was an ROTC graduate.
In 1952, after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics, he married Doris Kendle, the love of his life.
He served his country from 1952-54, when he was honorably discharged. John, a first lieutenant, was a forward observer with the U.S. Army’s 537th Field Artillery Battalion.
John was a devoted family man and felt blessed to be able to work closely with Doris and his kids on the farm. “Every man should be lucky enough to have a good dog, a good horse and a good wife,” John said. “I got all three.” John was proud that all his children and grandchildren went to college.
John was an avid hunter and horseman, enjoyed travel and was fond of water and snow skiing. He walked the Great Wall of China, traveled extensively throughout Europe and took his entire family to South Africa. He took delight in staying very close to his children and grandchildren and often traveled to see extended family. John loved to read the paper and debate current events. He enjoyed dancing with his wife at the Elks club. He and Doris shared an active membership in their local bridge club for many years.
John took satisfaction in being a good steward of the land and improving it for future generations. He was proud to have a top-quality cattle herd and raised Australian shepherd puppies for nearly 30 years. John showed his love for Curtis by supporting many local community organizations including 4-H, FFA, Teammates, Curtis EMT and the United Methodist Church of Curtis. John served on many church committees and was active in getting the new church built in 1990.
John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rosalie Doyle; sons, William and Gary; grandson, Scott Scharf; brothers-in-law, Mert Housley, Bob Doyle and Donald Kendle; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Kendle and Shirley Lane.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Doris (Kendle) Scharf; sister, Kay Housley; brother-in-law, Ed Lane; children, John (Barb) Scharf, Debra Scharf and Bob (Gayle) Scharf; grandchildren, Kristin Larson, Steven Scharf, Stephanie Eckles, Nichole McKendry, Kevin Scharf, William Scharf and Kacie Scharf; and great-grandchildren, Brock and Pierce Larson, Madeline and Avaline Eckles, and Kallon and Kinsley McKendry.

Marvin D. Sanford
Marvin D. Sanford, 93, of North Platte, passed away Feb. 1, 2018, at Sidney Regional Medical Center-Extended Care.
Marvin Dale Sanford, the son of Franklin Clarence and Josephine Fern (Sadle) Sanford, was born on Sept. 17, 1924, in North Platte. He graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1942. At the age of 18, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy. He served in World War II as a radarman in the South Pacific for three years until his honorable discharge in 1946.
On Aug. 24, 1947, Marvin was married to Mintra Jeanette Herstedt at Grace Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C., a union to which four children were born.
Marvin worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 34 years and was a proud Union man. He served as secretary/treasurer of his local union. In 1974, he traveled to Washington, D.C., with 5,000 other union members to lobby Congress for Social Security benefits for railroaders. This resulted in Congress enacting the Railroad Retirement Act of 1974, which provided for the Tier I benefit that railroaders still receive today.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mintra; daughter, Kate Becker; three brothers, Lee, Don, and Robert Sanford; and cherished friend, Donna Conrey.
Marvin is survived by three children, Sherri (Mike) Hausmann of Sidney, Stephen (Tammie) Sanford of North Platte and Marianne Barrett of Phoenix; one sister, Lucille Fairchild of Hamel, Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Betty Sanford of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Larry Dale Schaffert
Larry Dale Schaffert, 77, of Lincoln, formerly of North Platte, passed away Feb. 3, 2018.
Larry Dale Schaffert was born on Aug. 7, 1940, to Glen and Arlene (Larson) Schaffert in Maywood. Larry grew up on a small farm north of North Platte and attended Block School. In 1945, he welcomed a little sister, Carol Ann. He had fond memories of growing up on the farm, especially growing up with a horse, Cricket, and their dog, Sandy, playing cowboys and Indians and with the many toys that Larry carved out of wood.
In eighth grade, Larry went to school in North Platte. He played football and basketball and was a member of Future Farmers of America. After graduating high school, he attended junior college in McCook, studying construction management. Summers were spent on combining crews in the local area, working on construction projects and at Cook’s Paint. He also delivered for Coca-Cola.
In 1961, he married Shirley Paxton and lived and worked on a ranch near Tryon. Born to this union was one son, Steven Craig, on Jan. 22, 1970. Steven passed away from meningitis on July 7, 1974. This marriage dissolved in 1971.
Larry was employed by Union Pacific Railroad as a pipe fitter in 1968, moving to an engineer until his retirement in August 2010. He was a member of the Eagles club and American Legion. Larry was active in the military through the U.S. Army Reserves.
In 1973, he married Judy Rae McQuade. This marriage was blessed with two children, Brenda Renee’ and Jason Kyle. Larry took great pride in his children and thoroughly enjoyed his time with them on special camping trips, passing on his love for carpentry and building a doll house and store for Brenda to play in. Judy passed away after a long battle with ovarian cancer on March 18, 1995.
Larry married Beverly Joy Kimball on July 4, 1996. Joy had two daughters, Suzann Lynae and Kristin Nichole. Larry and Joy moved to Lincoln in 2016 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. One of the first things that Larry did was set up his workshop in their new home.
He was happiest working and playing at his cabin on Lake Maloney and in bowling and golfing leagues with his friends in North Platte, and he would rarely pass up a warm cup of coffee and a good conversation. Larry’s favorite teams included the Denver Broncos, Nebraska Cornhuskers and whoever was playing against Notre Dame. He was a skilled wood worker and especially enjoyed creating model airplanes.
Larry’s warm smile and kind heart will be missed. He was a wonderful man who loved life and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Joy; daughter, Brenda (Jacob); son, Jason (Kristin); stepdaughters, Suzann (Steve) and Kristin (Adam); sister, Carol (Mike); nine grandkids; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Feb. 7, at the First United Methodist Church in North Platte with Dr. Doug Delp officiating. Burial will be at the Floral Lawn Cemetery. Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
John C. Scheuler
John C. Scheuler, 66, of Diller, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 7, 2018, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
He was born on Feb. 26, 1951, in Fairbury to Elmo and Marjorie (Grissom) Scheuler. John graduated from North Platte High School in 1969.
He worked a short period of time for Union Pacific Railroad before serving in the United States Air Force.
Upon return from the military, John worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and most recently retired as a cement finisher. He did missionary work in Africa for Catholic Relief Services and was planning on going back soon. John enjoyed stock car races, rock concerts and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
John is survived by a sister, Susan (John) Welch of Cheyenne, Wyoming; brothers, Steve (Shirley) of Valdosta, Georgia, Jerry (Kim) of Grand Island and Jeff (Loriann) of Lead, South Dakota; nieces, Becky (Todd) Oswald and Megan Scheuler; and nephews, Greg (Stephanie) Welch, Brett (Jessica) Scheuler and Travis Scheuler.
