Madonna Marie Janecek Marman

Madonna Marie Janecek Marman, 78, a former local resident and 1957 graduate of North Platte High School, died of cancer Jan. 14, 2018, in Palm Desert, California.

Madonna was the daughter of Arnold Janecek, a rancher and auctioneer who died in 1943, and Beulah Sellers Janecek Winkler. Her stepfather was Raymond A. Winkler, who owned Blue Flame Propane in North Platte.

After leaving North Platte, Madonna attended Midland College in Fremont and the Lincoln General Hospital School of Nursing. She later completed nursing studies at College of the Desert in Palm Desert. She was well known in her community as a pediatrics nurse and a supporter of local charity events with her husband, who was on faculty at the College of the Desert.

Madonna was preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward and Bertha Janecek of North Platte and Byron and Bertha Sellers of Wellfleet; uncles, Victor, Chester, Milo, Joseph and Edward Janecek and Byron D. Sellers; and aunts, Bertha, Ellen and Stella Janecek.

Survivors include her husband, John Marman of Palm Desert; daughters, Suzi (John) Hanks of Houston, Texas, and Danielle (John) Scardino of Palm Desert; son, John Theodore (Donna) Marman of Capistrano Beach, California; grandson, John Knox Marman, also of Capistrano Beach; sisters, Jacqueline (Edward) Knight of Alexandria, Virginia, and Angela (Ben) Johnson of Arvada, Colorado; and three nephews and two nieces. Local survivors include her aunts, Marie Janecek Reichert and Winnie Janecek of North Platte and Bonnie Sellers of Wellfleet.

Memorials are suggested to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens of Palm Desert.

Services were in Palm Desert, and a family commemoration will be at a later date.

Marjorie A. Halverson Taylor Death Notice

Marjorie A. Halverson Taylor, 93, of North Platte, died Feb. 14, 2018, at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with ​Pastor Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be at the North Platte Cemetery. Daryl Kevin “Pickle” Higginbotham

Daryl Kevin “Pickle” Higginbotham, 64, of North Platte, passed away February 9, 2018 at his home with his wife and animals.  He was born to Willie John and Helen (Yates) Higginbotham on September 22, 1953.

For those who knew him well, he was “Pickle” and he would give you the shirt off his back.  He was a one of a kind human being, loved his family very much and was especially fond of sports and hanging out with his friends.

Daryl and his brother, John, started in business with their loving aunt and uncle, Millie and Roger Grosh.  They ran Roger’s Fine Food Restaurant in the community for forty years, retiring due to health problems.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Cindy; his mother, Helen; sisters, Debbie and Lisa; nieces, Erica and Andrea Kraetz, Cassidy and Savanna Arnold; nephew, Logan Arnold; aunts, Florence Yates Peterson and Louise Houghtelling; uncle, Raymond Yates and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willie John; brother, John; sisters, Marcia, Ronna and Janis Higginbotham; aunt and uncle, Millie and Roger Grosh.

Terrel Leland Dixon

Terrel Leland Dixon, 77, passed away February 10, 2018, at Linden Estates in North Platte.  Terrel was born on November 14, 1940, to Florence and Leland Dixon in Leroy, Kansas, where he grew up and graduated high school.  On June 13, 1959, Terrel married Sharon Lee Dupuy in Humbolt, Kansas.  They lived in Topeka, Kansas for five years before moving to several different towns and States as part of Terrel’s job working for a company that buried underground telephone cable.  In 1974, they settled in Paxton where Terrel worked for the telephone company.  In 1987, they moved to Wallace where they retired in 2005.  Terrel was a hardworking man who enjoyed working around the house and in his yard after he retired.  He loved to travel with Sharon, especially to Hawaii, where they spent numerous vacations.  Terrel was a loving and devoted husband to Sharon for 55 years until she passed in 2015.

Terrel was preceded in death by his parents.  He leaves behind one son, Keith, a daughter-in-law, Peggy, and two grandchildren, Justis and Allison, who live in Maryland.  Online condolences may be shared at www.carptermemorial.com.  Cremation was chosen and services will be a private family affair. Carroll J. McNeel

Carroll J. McNeel, 95, of North Platte, passed away Feb 8, 2018 at Harlingen, TX.

Carroll was born Oct. 31, 1922 at Sutherland, NE to Charles Emilo and Jennie E. (White) McNeel.

He grew up in Sutherland and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1942.  He ranched with his brother, Marvin McNeel, where his grandfather John McNeel started the ranch on the North West River Road.  He spent the next 50 years there and was known as a great cattleman.  He was in the business many years, topping the sale with his yearling steers and heifers.

He raised three children, Marlea, Janene and Richard.  In 1966, his wife, Barbara Robinson climbed aboard to help with the ranching and he helped raise her three children, Connie, Pamela and Randy.  He was a great father and stepdad.  Carroll was known for quiet gentle ways and thoroughly enjoyed the travels and hiking mountain trails and camping in the snowy ranges in Wyoming, where he and his wife were camp host for a few years.  He loved to fly fish and was quite good at it.

He and his wife retired in 1991 and went on the road full-time for 24 years visiting mainly the west coast in Indiana and saw beautiful country in the U.S.A.  He began to slow the pace when his health started deteriorating but we kept the travels from Nebraska to Texas for a few years.  We were called those winter Texans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Dwaine McNeel; brother, Marvin; sister, Arlene Simonetti; step-daughter, Connie Coady; brother-in-law, James Knapton; a sister-in-law, Lois Houser; and a step daughter-in-law, Mona Robinson.

Carroll is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Richard (Carol) of Chapel Hills, North Carolina; two daughters, Marlea (Vance) Post of North Platte and Janene (Ken) Huffman of Dallas, Georgia; two step children, Randy Robinson of North Platte and Pamela Robinson of College Station, TX; 19 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Gene (Rena) Piel of Missouri and Bill Houser of Elwood, NE; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He left many friends behind at the Yellow Rose RV Resort in La Feria, TX.  Most were from the northern states but many others were from states where we camped in different areas across the country.

Your wife, Barb is going to miss you Carroll, 51 years has been a great trip!

Ruth Elizabeth Lutz

Ruth Elizabeth Lutz, age 80 of Sutherland, passed away Wednesday February 7, 2018 at Great Plains Health in North Platte.

Ruth was born August 10, 1937 in Nebraska City, NE to Kenneth and Margie (Morris) Conaway.  She married Richard R. Lutz on June 4, 1955 in Avoca, NE at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.  They resided in eastern Nebraska until 1969 when they moved to Sutherland.  Ruth was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  She worked various jobs in Sutherland but her favorite job was being a Foster Grandparent at the Sutherland Schools.  She loved being around children and helping them in any way she could.

Ruth is survived by her husband Dick; sons Dick Jr. (Kelly), Paul (Laurie) and John (Kendra) Lutz, all of Sutherland; daughter Teresa McKinney of Omaha; 14 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; brother Ken (Jane) Conaway; sisters Alice Grassman and Kay (Gene) McKern, all of Council Bluffs, IA; as well as other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; children Elizabeth, Margie, Peggy and Mark; grandchildren Brittany and Mark; and her brother Mike.

Darlene M. Schick

Darlene M. Schick, 85, of North Platte, passed away, February 10, 2018 at Centennial Park Retirement Village.  She was born June 8, 1932 to Harrison and Mable (Fitzsimmons) Hartford at Primrose, near Cedar Rapids, NE.  Darlene grew up around Primrose and Albion, graduating from Albion High School with the class of “49”.  After high school she taught at Albion.  On April 14, 1954, she was united in marriage to Henry Schick at North Platte.  Darlene was employed at AT&T, until her retirement in 1981.  She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln County Tree Board, Telephone Pioneers and Parliamentarians. She was a master gardener and was in the Nebraska State Garden Club, presiding as President for two years.

She is survived by her husband, Henry of North Platte; a son, Larry (Mary) Schick; a daughter, Anissa (Monte) Walker; a sister, Marjorie Taylor; a brother, Tom (Donna) Hartford; six grandchildren, Staci (Brent) Froman, Katie (Mitch) Pacheco, Andrea Schick, Colton (fiancé Erin Lewis) Walker, Luke Walker and Bryson Walker; three great grandchildren, Emilee, Garrison and Brylee; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Barbara Leigh Scranton

Barbara Leigh Scranton, age 52, of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018, at Great Plains Health.

Barbara was born in Buffalo, New York, January 6, 1966, to Richard Bruce and Sharlene Doris (Sutter) Scranton. She grew up in Buffalo and Aurora, Colorado, where she graduated from Aurora High School. Barbara loved her animals and her family. She also had a passion for flowers which led her to take horticulture classes.

She is survived by her mother, Sharlene Scranton, of North Platte; siblings, Kevin Donnelly, Debra Walkinshaw and Brenda Mayer, all of North Platte, Richard (Tonya) Scranton, of Aurora, Colorado, Jennifer (Phillip) Hyde, of Kentucky, and Vicki (Rick) Hinton, of Church Hill, Maryland; eight nieces, five nephews and other family.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Richard; and grandparents, George and Berniece Scranton and Allen and Lila Sutter.

Cremation was chosen. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2018, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Pastor Dennis Leitner officiating. Ila Mae Calkin

Ila Mae Calkin, age 91, of North Platte, passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Linden Court.

Ila was born May 15, 1926, to Jesse Jackson and Della Alsino (Cole) Hevlin on the family farm between Stockville and Curtis, NE, where she grew up. Ila graduated in 1944 from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture High School in Curtis and worked at the Dry Goods Store before and after graduating.

On July 11, 1947, Ila was united in marriage to Everett Dewayne Calkin in Holdrege, NE. The couple lived in Curtis until 1989 when they moved to North Platte. They had a daughter, Susan Kay, and celebrated over 70 years of marriage.

Ila was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Platte and the Garden Club in Curtis. She liked volunteering, helping at the Curtis Methodist Church and working with Girl Scouts. Ila especially enjoyed going to sales with Everett and gardening. She loved growing vegetables in her acre garden and selling her produce in the local area and to friends. Ila and Everett also loved dancing with each other. They spent Wednesday evenings dancing at the Senior Center and looked forward to Winter Dance and any other dance they could find.

She is survived by her husband, Everett, of North Platte; daughter, Susan (David) King, of Kearney, NE; grandchildren, Charlie King, Megan (Matt) Currin and Brett (Alene) King; great-grandchildren, Emett Currin and Alissa King; and other family.

Ila was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Della Hevlin.

Funeral Service will be 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating. Burial will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.
