Riley Kent Trew

Riley Kent Trew of North Platte passed away at his home, Friday, March 29, 2019 at the age of 67 with his wife Pam (Bruha) Trew, and son, Joshua Scott Trew by his side.

Riley was born March 5, 1952 in Grand Island to Wayne and Arlene (Bachkora) Trew; graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1970; attended GI School of Business and Hastings Technical School and married Pam on March 3, 1978 in Grand Island at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  He and his family lived in Grand Island, Phoenix, AZ; and last resided in North Platte.

Riley owned and operated Flat Land Construction for 20 years.  He rebuilt his mother’s home in 1980 after the June 3rd tornado, and following that build a home for his sister.  Riley tried to keep busy in the off months and enjoyed rebuilding totaled Toyota trucks in his spare time, working in the yard, and snow removal.  He was a great husband and father who loved his family.  He especially enjoyed family vacations and holidays.  Trips to the mountains, California, and Disneyland were his favorites.  He surprised his wife with a trip to Hawaii on the spur of the moment!

Riley was preceded in death by his brother, DeWayne Sterling, who died at childbirth; his father and mother, Wayne Trew and Arlene Glenda (Bachkora) Trew; grandparents, Ruth and Amel Bachkora and Leonard and Rose Trew.

He is survived by his wife, Pam of North Platte; son, Joshua Scott Trew of North Platte; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea Kay Trew and Kevin Rose of Omaha; and sister and brother-in-law, Ronda Kay and Jeff Hutchison of Falling Waters, WV; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Glen Fredrick Golter

Glen Golter, 97, of Brady, NE passed away on April 4, 2019 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg. Glen Fredrick Golter was born on September 24, 1921 to Fred and Lillian Golter at their Furnas County farm home. He was baptized into Christs death and resurrection on October 12, 1921 and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 26h, 1935 at Trinity Lutheran
Church near Arapahoe, Nebraska. Glen was the oldest son, he had an older sister Alene and two younger brothers Lloyd and Gerald. He attended Furnas County School District 18 where he graduated from the eighth grade in 1936.

He met Marjorie Huff in Arapahoe, where they dated and were married on December 12, 1943. Glen proudly enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1944-1946. After returning from Germany Glen got a job with the Bureau of Reclamation as a surveyor laying out the Medicine Creek Dam. He then went to work for Central Nebraska Public Power. Glen and Marge raised their three sons in a small house on Jeffrey Lake Dam. He retired in 1986 after 34 years as an operator of the power plant.

Glen was called home by our Lord on April 4, 2019 at Hilltop Estates where he resided. He is survived by his three sons, Gary (Connie) Golter of Hastings, Bobby (Susan) Golter of Brady and Randy (Elizabeth) Golter of Davenport, Iowa, 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Marge, his loving wife of 72 years, his sister Alene and brother-in-law Wayne, his brother Lloyd and his daughter-in-law, Julie Golter.

Sharon Kay Moller

Sharon Kay Moller, age 78, a longtime resident of North Platte, passed away December 11, 2018 at her home, surrounded by loved ones.

Sharon was born April 12, 1940 in North Platte to Ivan and Ruby (Lasure) Smith.  She graduated from North Platte High School with the class of 1958.  She married William Moller, the love of her life, in 1984.  Traveling, going to Husker games, digging in the garden, jumping thru mud puddles with the grandchildren and visiting with friends and family on the patio, were some of her most cherished moments.

Sharon worked at Schwesers, Maurice’s and Adams and Swanson Funeral Home.  She was a past president of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed sewing, cooking, crocheting, quilting and bowling. She shared her talents with many. Whether it was baby blankets and Halloween costumes for the grandkids or an Advent calendar for a friend, she did it with love.

Sharon is survived by her children, Debbie Keithley of Seattle, WA, Leisa (Donald) Klinge of Colorado Springs, CO, Kristine Schwager of North Platte; brother I.C. (Jerry) Smith of Henderson, NV; sister Susan (Morris) McKillip of Raton, NM; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; close friends Vicki and Jeff Young; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Moller; parents Ivan and Ruby Smith; and son Danny Keithley.

Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2019 at Ft. Arlene J. Hardin

Arlene J. Hardin 86, of Oakland, IA, formerly of North Platte passed away April 3, 2019 at the Oakland

Manor in Oakland, IA.

Arlene was born in Blair, NE on October 10, 1932 to Albert and Mabel (Larson) Curtis. She moved to Brady where she graduated from Brady HS in 1950 and married her husband Conrad Hardin in 1951.  Arlene moved to North Platte from Hershey after the death of her husband in 1963. She raised her five children in North Platte and earned a Nursing degree at Mid plains Community College. She worked at Linden Manor in North Platte until 1977 when she moved to Cheyenne, WY to pursue her Nursing career at the VA Hospital. After retiring from the VA, Arlene returned to North Platte to enjoy her retirement with family and longtime friends. In 2014 she was moved to Iowa due to her failing health and to be closer to her daughter.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Albert & Mabel Curtis of Brady; her husband, Conrad and one son, Kyle.

Arlene is survived by her son, Mike (Kim) Hardin of Sacramento, CA.; daughters, Coral (Jim), Gail (Steve) Lopez of North Platte, and Connie (Bob) Jepsen of Council Bluffs, IA.;12 grandchildren; and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Her witty sense of humor will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Graveside Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2019 at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Daniel Ramsey officiating.  Visitation will be noon – 6:00 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2019 at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.

Janice Westman

Jan Westman, 81, of North Platte died March 23, 2019 at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.

She was born March 7, 1938 at home near Gandy, NE, to Frank Marion and Pauline Marie Nielsen Barnes.

As a child Jan lived on Garfield Table with her mother, grandparents, and Uncles Paul and Albert Nielsen. They moved to Arnold in 1945 where she attended grade and high school, graduating in 1955.

On June 26, 1955, Jan married Ronald Lee Westman of Callaway at the Arnold Methodist Church. They lived in Kentucky and Maryland while he was in the service, moving to his family farm on Stop Table near Callaway in 1958. There they had 4 children: Jim, Julie, Bill and Bob.

The family moved to North Platte in 1970. In 1975, Jan accepted Jesus as her Savior. In 1982, they began full-time travelling, going south in winter and north in summer.

Jan became an LPN in 1991, graduating from MPCC in North Platte. She had nursing licenses in Nebraska, Wyoming, Texas and Nevada. She worked for the American Red Cross at bloodmobiles in and around North Platte for many years. She retired at the age of 69.

Jan’s husband, Ron, passed away in 2017. After his death, she lived in Central City with her daughter, Julie.

Mrs. Westman is survived by: four children, James (Kathy) Westman of Magna, Utah;  Julie Rainbolt of Central City, NE; William (Kathy) Westman of North Platte; and Robert (Merry) Westman of Gurley, NE;  twelve grandchildren, David (Kristine) and Jonathan (Martha) Westman of Magna, Utah; Danielle, Jennifer, and Sarah Rainbolt of Grand Island, and Amber Rainbolt (Jesse Herman) of Ashland, NE; Ryan (Connie) Westman of Pendleton, Oregon; Jason (Abi) of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; Daniel (Amanda) Westman and Michael Westman of Sidney, NE; Garrett (Kelsey) Westman of Omaha; Jared (Elayna)Westman of Kearney.  She also is survived by 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald, and her parents and grandparents.

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, April 8 at 10 am at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte; at 2 pm at Morning Star Church near Callaway; with private burial at Stop Table cemetery near Callaway.

 

Brenda Kay Holt

Brenda Kay Holt, 74, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died April 3, 2019 in Gothenburg.  She was born August 24, 1944 in Alex, Oklahoma, daughter of Ueal and Ila Faye (Holder) Gay.
Brenda grew up in Alex, Oklahoma where she attended and graduated from Alex High School.  After graduation, she attended beauty school in Chickasha, Oklahoma.  She married Floyd Holt on June 3, 1961 at Alex Baptist Church in Oklahoma and they had two children – Rusty and Shellie.  They moved to Gothenburg, Nebraska in 1974 and Brenda worked as a hairdresser.  She later owned and operated Gothenburg Floral Express for many years.  She was a member of the Nebraska Appaloosa Horse Club and received the Hall of Fame Award in 2019.  Brenda was a busy wife and grandmother supporting her family in all their adventures.  She was very creative in her flowers, crafting and sewing.  She also enjoyed being outside fishing and gardening.  She spent many hours canning her garden produce.
Surviving are husband, Floyd Holt of Gothenburg; son, Rusty (Kay) Holt of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Shellie Rossell of Gothenburg;  mother, Ila Faye Gay, sister, Linda Ray of Childress, Texas, brother, Randall Gay of Alex, Oklahoma, brother, Marlon (Janice) Gay of Duncan, Oklahoma, brother-in-law, Dan (Leta) Holt of Chickasha, Oklahoma, brother-in-law, Mac (LaFonda) Holt of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; along with many extended family and friends.
Brenda was preceded in death by father, Ueal Gay, mother-in-law, Rosa Holt, father-in-law, Reford Holt, brother-in-law, Roy Holt, sister-in-law Mimi Holt.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 620 Tenth Street, Gothenburg, Nebraska on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 from 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at American Lutheran Church, 1512 Ave G, Gothenburg on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 11:00 am with Pastor Jon Mapa officiating.  Interment will take place in the Laflin Creek Cemetery in Alex, Oklahoma.

Ieleen Marjorie Larsen


Ieleen Marjorie Larsen, 95, of Lincoln, Nebraska, died at the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln on Wednesday, April 3, 2019.  Ieleen was born January 17, 1924, in Marquette, Nebraska to Alfred and
Agnes Serine (Andersen) Nissen.  She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Marquette High School in 1941.  She attended Grand Island Business College and worked for Radio Intelligence of the Federal Communication Division in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Ieleen married Gilbert Danhauer Larsen on April 3, 1944, in Kronberg, Nebraska and they made their home near Marquette where they farmed.  Together they raised two children, Twila and Dan. They moved to North Platte, Nebraska in 1961 where Ieleen worked for Schweser’s Clothing and later the Internal Revenue Service for 10 years.

She was very committed to a strong relationship with God and supported many activities within the First United Methodist Church of North Platte where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women.  She was also an active member of the North Platte Shrine Auxiliary and supported the Salvation Army.

Ieleen was an excellent cook, sharing recipes from her Danish heritage for all to enjoy. She was a gracious hostess at holiday celebrations, with family traveling from throughout the U.S. to enjoy her warm welcome and family traditions.  Ieleen appreciated the beauty of flowers and planted lovely flower gardens around her home. Gifts of bouquets always delighted her and she would lovingly tend to them, extending the life of each blossom to enjoy their beauty as long as possible. She taught herself to play the piano and xylophone at a young age and entertained  her family and church congregation with her talent.

Ieleen’s spirit of nurturing was evident in the love and care she gave to her family. Her marriage to Gib lasted 66 years and they were known as an inspiration to all who saw their enduring bonds of devotion. Her children and grandchildren knew they could always depend on her wise guidance and comfort in times of need.

Ieleen leaves behind to cherish her memories her son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Ann Larsen, of Dayton, Ohio and son-in-law, Roger Voss, of Lincoln; nine grandchildren, Trevor Larsen, Tiffany O’Day, Tara Laymon, Tami Schmitt, Adrian Voss, Kristin Williams, Megan Scott, Devin Larsen and Dana Wright; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, and their daughter, Twila Voss; great-grandson, Douglas Hoegemeyer; her parents, Alfred and Agnes Nissen; and brothers, Dean Nissen and Irvin Nissen.

Cremation was chosen.  Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2019, at Southwood Lutheran Church, 4301 Wilderness Hills Blvd in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Graveside service and burial of her cremains will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, south of Maxwell, Nebraska.

V. Joan West

Verona “Joan” West, 89, of Curtis, Nebraska went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 2, 2019 at Kearney, Nebraska.

Joan was born one of twin daughters on November 21, 1929 to John and Dorothy Durner of Wellfleet, Nebraska.  She attended Bell Prairie Grade School and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture.  Following a semester of college, she married Truman “Jake” West of Hayes Center, Nebraska in December 1946.  Two daughters, Linda (Evans) and Marilyn (Cole) were born and raised on the family farm.  She farmed side-by-side with her husband for 19 years before moving to Curtis.  She was an Administrative Assistant to Ernest Nelson of the Farm Bureau, Dr. Everett Stencil of the Medicine Valley Veterinary Hospital, and Wayne Heather at the NRD before retiring.  She was a member of the Methodist church in Curtis, NE.

Joan had a special place in her heart for all farm animals, especially the horses.  She loved riding her favorite horse, Twister, with the Frontier Wranglerettes.  You might say her farm life continued in Curtis with a very large strawberry patch and vegetable garden.  She was proud to display her custom-designed yard art, especially at Christmas.  Joan enjoyed the days of camping and fishing, especially with a pontoon boat.  She loved music, played in a band at an early age, and loved to dance with Jake.  The scalding hot coffee was always on at her home or on the boat, and you never left her house without eating something.  Her Pride and Joy were her grandchildren, watching and cheering them on at rodeos, games or wherever their life lead them.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Marily, brother Merle Durner, in-laws Truman and Nellie West, and sisters-in-laws June Bahl and Delores Myers.

She is survived by her twin sister, Romona “Jean” Elson and sister-in-law Evelyn Durner.  Joan’s Legacy lives on with her daughter, Linda; grandchildren, Codi (Greg) Mortell of Susanville, California, Stacy Cole (Mike) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Kelli (Donnell) Brown of Throckmorton, Texas, Kory (Jodi) Evans of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jodi (Ryan) Propst of North Platte, Nebraska; great grandchildren, Nathan Mortell, LaMare and Satore King, Tucker (Karley) Brown, Lanham Brown, Jordan (Jacey) Evans and Mason Propst.

Visitation will be held at Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel, 317 Center Ave in Curtis, Nebraska on Monday, April 8, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the family present from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Clarence Dale Stearns

Clarence Dale Stearns passed away April 2, 2019 at the age of 90 years old.

Clarence was born June 2, 1928 to Clarence and Fern (Greely) Stearns in North Platte, Nebraska.  He lived his entire life in North Platte and graduated from North Platte, High School in 1947.

On April 24, 1949 he married Barbara Jean Carlisle. They were married for 69 years.  Together they had four children; three daughters Beverly Ann, Pamela Sue, Sandra Jean and one son Gary Dale.

He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and anything that had to do with his cattle but he especially loved his horses.  He loved riding his horses and delighted in showing his grandkids the newest colt.

Clarence worked for a trucking transfer company when he was first married.  He later sold and hauled hay to surrounding communities followed by trucking cattle for several years. Later he started farming which he continued for the rest of his life.

He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church and one of the original members of the West Central Pork Producers. He also attended on a weekly basis and was a member of the Lake Maloney Roping Club.

Clarence was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Harrold “Butch” Stearns, and brother in-law Shorty Cohn.

Survivors include his wife Jean, children Beverly Dimmick, Pamela (Bill) Kautz, Gary (Ruth) Stearns, and Sandra (Gordon) Johnson all of North Platte, three sisters, Mary Jane Cohn, Clare (Frosty) Shields and Shirley (David) Simpson; grandchildren Kristie Frazier, Brad (Kristy) Frazier, Becky (Greg) Goodwater, Courtney (Tony) Fodor, Lindsay (Troy) Perry, Ryan (Rebecca) Stearns, Eric Stearns, Jayme (Nick) Smith, Wylie (Maria) Johnson, Loncey (Jessie Jo) Johnson, Chantel (Logan) Elliott, and MaKenna Johnson, 16 great grandchildren, several step grandchildren, many step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
