ON THE WEB: Protecting your “Smartphone”..

They’re called smartphones. But some of us
aren’t as smart as we should be when it comes to safeguarding them.
And even as the FCC and cellular carriers are teaming up to keep
stolen phones from being sold and reused, the FCC is offering
suggestions to help make sure the phones don’t get stolen to begin
with. Among them:
Never leave a phone unattended in a public place.

– Write down the make and model of your phone, as well as the
serial number and unique ID number, in case it’s stolen.

– Make sure your phone is protected with a password.

– Consider displaying contact information on the screen that
shows up when a phone is idle and locked. That way, someone finding
a lost phone can reach its owner.

(LETTERS TO THE POST) Someone has a bone to pick with the State of Nebraska

The State of Nebraska dropped BCBS for its employees and will be going with United Healthcare starting either June or July. State employees in North Platte, Lexington, etc (from all departments) have been contacting the Human Resources Department with the state and have been sending letters to Representatives and Senators. None of the employees concerns that the doctor’s wont accept United Healthcare are being listened to. Another case of Nebraskans who live in Omaha and Lincoln dont care about the rest of us in the rest of the state. If you do some digging, you’ll find tons more. Tons. There are like 3 doctors in North Platte that will take the insurance and employees are asking their doctors to accept United Healthcare and the doctors are saying No. I know for a fact there are no OB/GYN’s, No Pediatricians, No Podiatrists, No Dermatologists, No ENT’s, and I’m sure there’s more. One of the doctor’s listed as active and accepting UH is not even alive anymore. State employees are getting screwed in Central / West Nebraska and there’s nothing we can do but take it apparently.

(OPINION) Did your parents ever deliberately embarrass you as a punishment?

Sometimes parents feel need to put kids in their place, and often the only way to get through to them is by humiliating them. Take this recent story for example. A Florida dad was fed up with his son’s bad behavior and failing grades that he made the high school student stand outside at a busy intersection wearing a sign letting passersby know that he failed three courses because he’s a class clown. Sounds pretty harsh, but the kid got the message and said he’s going to try harder in school. And of course there’s the dad who famously shot up his daughter’s laptop in a viral video.

  • Did your parents ever deliberately embarrass you as a punishment? What did you do, and how did they embarrass you?
  • Parents, have you ever deliberately humiliated your kids to get a point across? What did you do?
  • Do you think it’s okay to publicly humiliate your child to your point across?

What’s your biggest “Pet Peeve”?

In a typical day, there’s no shortage of things that can really bother you. No matter how big or small, these pet peeves drive you crazy. There are the drivers who change lanes without signaling, doofuses who wear socks with sandals, loud chewers and people who just don’t shut up. And the worst part about some of these pet peeves is that you don’t even know exactly why they bother you.

So what is your biggest pet peeve and why?

MITT ROMNEY: Nudges Rivals to Quit

Mitt Romney is urged his Republican rivals to pack it in yesterday, saying that he’s on track to score the presidential nomination before the party’s convention. Yet Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich continued to say that they’re in it for the long haul.

On top of that, a Santorum ally suggested that Newt give up, but Gingrich declined, saying he’d only consider it if he thought Santorum could beat Romney and President Obama, but “I don’t,” he said.

Santorum also had some choice words for Romney, when he heard that Romney had said it would take an act of God for any other Republican candidate to collect the required convention delegates. Santorum snapped, “What won’t they resort to, to try to bully their way through this race? If the governor now thinks he’s now ordained by God to win, then let’s have it out.”

Are you tired of the #GOP race or do you find the constant sniping entertaining? Who’d win if #Romney and #Santorum had it out?

(OPINION) HACK ATTACK: FBI Warns Congress About Terrorist Threat

The director of the FBI warned members of Congress yesterday that terrorist groups might launch a cyber-attack on the U.S. The warning comes a day after several hackers from the Anonymous movement were arrested by authorities.

FBI Director Robert Mueller said in written testimony, “Terrorists have shown interest in pursuing hacking skills. And they may seek to train their own recruits or hire outsiders, with an eye toward pursuing cyber-attacks. These adaptations of the terrorist threat make the FBI’s counterterrorism mission that much more difficult and challenging.”

(LETTERS TO THE POST) Justice isn’t justice for all

I’m writing in regards to the way North Platte and maybe other counties in Nebraska is handling certain county court cases. I know for a fact of a gentleman that was arrested for DUI a year ago in March. Because he is of some interest to myself, I have watched via the court website that he still has not been to court and sentenced for that offense! Not only has he not been sentenced but he has had a court date every month and a half for the past year! I’d like to know, even if he is paying an attorney, how something like this gets put on the back burner and what it is costing our county/courts to have him on the schedule routinely for a year without any outcome??? I understand a fair trail, speedy trial and the like but come on people, this is ridiculous!
