The third-ranked Lady Irish are hoping to stay unbeaten, while the fifth-ranked Irish boys face a stern test from Gothenburg’s towering frontcourt.

BASKETBALL: Sailors, Swedes Among Those Opening Seasons Tonight

The high school basketball season begins tonight, with seven area teams scheduled for girls and boys doubleheaders. Sutherland travels to take on Broken Bow. The Lady Sailors are ranked in the top ten in both major Class D1 polls. Elsewhere, Gothenburg travels to Lexington. The Swede boys return several starters from a strong team last season and should be one of the area’s best this year. Also on tap tonight, Cozad vists Chase County, Sandhills/Thedford treks to Burwell, Med Valley hosts Southwest, and SMC welcomes Mullen.

FOOTBALL: Local Teams Eliminated From Playoffs

The last four area football teams left standing saw their seasons come to an end in quarterfinal playoff action last night. The St. Patrick’s Irish couldn’t cope with the speed of Doniphan-Trumbull’s spread offense, as the Cardinals defeated the Irish 35-6 in Doniphan. Sean Keenan’s touchdown pass to Mark Mayfield in the first quarter accounted for the Irish’s lone score. Also in the Class C2 field, a big second quarter led Sutton past Hershey 48-7, ending the Panthers’ surprising playoff run. In class C1, Boone Central/Newman Grove scored 31 straight points in a 38-20 victory over Gothenburg. Preston Franzen and Logan Sheets each scored a rushing touchdown for the Swedes. And in class D1, Medicine Valley sorely missed injured starting quarterback Riley Garey, as they fell to Giltner 66-22.

FOOTBALL: State Quarterfinal Preview

Four area teams take to the gridiron tonight in quarterfinal action in the state football playoffs. In Class C2, both Hershey and St. Patrick’s are still alive. The Irish’s stout defense will meet its greatest challenge to date in the high-flying, high-scoring offense of Doniphan-Trumbull in one C2 western quarterfinal. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action from Doniphan, with pregame coverage at 5:30 and the kickoff at 6 PM. In the other C2 western quarterfinal, Hershey looks to keep their Cinderella run alive as they visit top-seed Sutton. That game gets underway at 5 PM. In the C1 bracket, Gothenburg’s putting together a magical run of their own. They trek to Albion to battle top-seed Boone Central/Newman Grove at 3 PM. And in Class D2, it’s a battle of unbeatens as Medicine Valley faces Giltner at 3 PM.

Gothenburg Swede Sports Update – November 2

The Gothenburg Swedes football team is on to the C1 quarterfinals! Their defense has come up huge in the playoffs so far. Hear who sparked the Swedes to victory in Chadron on both offense and defense. Also, we celebrate a record year for Lady Swede volleyball. Hear it all in this week’s Gothenburg Swede sports update!

FOOTBALL: Panthers, Irish, Swedes and Raiders Move to Quarterfinals

The glass slipper in the state football playoffs fits the paw of a Panther. Two interception returns for touchdowns in the fourth quarter lifted twelfth-seed Hershey to a 34-20 victory over Blue Hill and into the Class C2 quarterfinals for the first time ever. Colton Marshall and Dylan Johnson had the pick-sixes that helped Hershey stave off the Bobcats rally. Also moving on to the state quarterfinals in C2 are the St. Patrick’s Irish. Sean Keenan threw a touchdown pass and ran for three scores in a 32-6 win over West Holt. In class C1, thirteen-seed Gothenburg posted their second straight shutout, blanking Chadron 12-0 to advance. In Class D2, Medicine Valley also moved on, beating Creek Valley 64-42. Elsewhere, Chase County fell to Boone Central/Newman Grove 48-20 in class C1, and Maxwell lost 16-0 to Arapahoe in class D1.
