GIRLS GOLF: State Tournaments Conclude

The state girls golf tournaments concluded yesterday, ending the first of the athletic seasons in the 2012-2013 prep sports year. In the Class A tournament in Norfolk, North Platte finished 10th out of 12 teams with a two-day score of 805. Tessa Burford shot a 190 and Jordyn Pearson fired a 195, both breaking 100 both days for the Lady Bulldogs. In the Class C tournament in Columbus, Gothenburg ended up in 11th place out of 15 teams with a team score of 863. Andrea Coder shot the team’s lowest score with a 210. Ogallala finished in second place as a team in Class C, five strokes behind champions Grand Island Central Catholic.

GIRLS GOLF: Bulldogs, Swedes Compete at State

The state girls golf tournaments opened yesterday with the teams from North Platte and Gothenburg participating. At the Class A tournament at the Norfolk County Club, the Lady Bulldogs rank 10th out of 12 teams with a one-day score of 402. Tessa Burford posted the lowest score for North Platte with a 92, a score that places her in a 30th place tie 14 strokes behind the leader.. Jordyn Pearson also broke the century mark, shooting a 99. Jenae States, Erin Green, and Lauren Wagner also completed their rounds for the Lady Bulldogs. In the Class C tournament at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus, Gothenburg ranks eighth of 15 teams with a one-day total of 422. Andrea Coder’s 98 was the low score for the Lady Swedes, 16 strokes off the leader. In team competition, Ogallala leads Grand Island Central Catholic by four strokes.

FOOTBALL: Week Seven Recap

Given a reprieve after a defensive penalty on the last play in regulation, the Bulldogs got a 36 yard field goal from Brandon Hedgecock to tie the game and a 26 yard field goal from Hedgecock to win it in the first overtime. Here’s how the winning field goal sounded:

FOOTBALL: Week Seven Preview

It’s homecoming night at North Platte High, where the Bulldogs’ clash with Lincoln High is just one of many intriguing games in Week Seven of the prep season. The Bulldogs are hoping to go 2-1 in district play with a victory. ESPN Radio 1410’s coverage of Bulldog football gets underway with the pregame show at 6:30, leading to the kickoff at 7. Elsewhere, the St. Patrick’s Irish return from their bye week to put their unbeaten record on the line at Cambridge in a renewal of a fierce rivalry. Hershey tries to get back on the winning track as they host Dundy County-Stratton. Maxwell makes the trek to the Panhandle to take on Morrill. Sutherland hopes to make some steps forward as they host much-improved SMC. Brady travels to Hayes Center in what should be a shootout, and Wallace hopes to rebound from a loss as they play at home against Hitchcock County.

SOFTBALL: Bulldogs Fall to Thunderbirds, Will Play Elimination Game

The North Platte Bulldog softball team will be fighting for their season Friday morning when they take on Omaha Central in the elimination game at the A7 district softball tournament at the Dowhower Complex. The top-seeded Bulldogs eked out a win over fourth-seed Kearney in the first game, but were shutout by Bellevue West 7-0 in their second game. The Thunderbirds advance to the championship game at noon. North Platte will face the Eagles, who lost 8-0 to Bellevue West but rebounded to beat Kearney 8-0.

ESPN Radio 1410’s coverage of Bulldog softball will begin at 9:45 AM and carry until the Bulldogs are eliminated.

VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Stun Ogallala in Five Thrilling Sets

For the first time in three years, the North Platte Bulldog volleyball team got the best of Ogallala. They had to overcome a nightmare first set and a two sets to one deficit to earn the 8-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 victory at the Dawghouse. Anna Allberry’s game high seventeenth kill of the night finished off the Indians. The Bulldogs improve to 11-8 with the win. They’re at a double triangular in Kearney on Saturday, where they’ll face Lincoln Southeast and Lincoln Northeast.

GIRLS GOLF: Lady Bulldogs Qualify For State

The North Platte girls golf team finished third at the A-4 district tournament at Lake Maloney Golf Club on Monday, qualifying for the state tournament. The team shot a total score of 374, one stroke behind second-place Millard South and 23 strokes back of champions Norfolk. Tessa Burford finished one stroke off the leaders with an 86, while Jenae States shot an 87 to also finish as a medalist. The Class A state golf tournament takes place October 8-9 at the Norfolk Country Club.

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Bulldogs Host Ogallala (LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410)

Tonight on ESPN Radio 1410, it’s North Platte Lady Bulldog volleyball. The Lady Bulldogs hope the third time is the charm against Ogallala this season as they welcome the Lady Indians to the Dawghouse. North Platte lost to Ogallala at the season opening Sidney triangular and again in a match in Ogallala on September 11. The Lady Bulldogs are coming off a 2-1 record and fifth-place finish at the Columbus Invitational on Saturday. ESPN Radio 1410’s coverage of tonight’s match begins at approximately 6:45, with first serve scheduled for 7 PM.

FOOTBALL: Week Six Preview

Week Six of the prep football season sees several local teams trying to start winning streaks. The North Platte Bulldogs are one of them. The Bulldogs hope for a 2-0 start to district play as they head on the road to face Lincoln North Star. North Platte held off Fremont 17-14 last week for their first win of the season. They’ll face a tall order in trying to slow down the ninth-ranked Gators, who are led by powerful junior running back Austin Rose. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7.

The Hershey Panthers are also looking for a second straight victory as they trek west to take on Bayard. The Panther defense is allowing just seven points per game and are coming off their second shutout of the season. Hershey beat Bridgeport 12-0 last week to improve to 2-2. Bayard is 1-3 on the season.

Both Maxwell and Sutherland are thirsty for a win as they tangle in Maxwell tonight. The Sailors are 0-4 in their first season in eight-man football. Maxwell has lost three straight games following an opening win over Brady.

Wallace and Brady meet in Brady in a battle of two teams heading in opposite directions. The Wildcats beat Hayes Center last week and are looking for a third straight win, while Brady is off to a 1-4 start and needs to start picking up some victories.

SOFTBALL: Bulldogs to Host District

The North Platte Bulldog softball team will host the A-7 District tournament next Thursday and Friday at the Dowhower Softball Complex. Bellevue West, Kearney and Omaha Central are the other teams assigned to the district. The Bulldogs have played both Bellevue West and Kearney this season. They lost to the Thunderbirds in Lincoln at a tournament last weekend and swept Kearney in a doubleheader on September 11.
