FOOTBALL: State Quarterfinal Preview

Four area teams take to the gridiron tonight in quarterfinal action in the state football playoffs. In Class C2, both Hershey and St. Patrick’s are still alive. The Irish’s stout defense will meet its greatest challenge to date in the high-flying, high-scoring offense of Doniphan-Trumbull in one C2 western quarterfinal. ESPN Radio 1410 has all the action from Doniphan, with pregame coverage at 5:30 and the kickoff at 6 PM. In the other C2 western quarterfinal, Hershey looks to keep their Cinderella run alive as they visit top-seed Sutton. That game gets underway at 5 PM. In the C1 bracket, Gothenburg’s putting together a magical run of their own. They trek to Albion to battle top-seed Boone Central/Newman Grove at 3 PM. And in Class D2, it’s a battle of unbeatens as Medicine Valley faces Giltner at 3 PM.

CROSS COUNTRY: North Platte’s McGuire, Paxton’s Perlinger Earn All-State Honors

North Platte High School junior Wyatt McGuire was named a Class A All-State and all-class Super State runner by the Nebraska Coaches Association. McGuire took first place at the A3 district cross country meet and then placed third at the state meet. He has been a state medalist for three straight years. Paxton senior Garrett Perlinger was named a Class D All-State runner. He placed seventh at the state meet.

Gothenburg Swede Sports Update – November 2

The Gothenburg Swedes football team is on to the C1 quarterfinals! Their defense has come up huge in the playoffs so far. Hear who sparked the Swedes to victory in Chadron on both offense and defense. Also, we celebrate a record year for Lady Swede volleyball. Hear it all in this week’s Gothenburg Swede sports update!

VOLLEYBALL: Sutherland, Brady State Bound, Lady Irish Play For Trip Tonight

The Sutherland Lady Sailors and Brady Lady Eagles are heading to Grand Island for next week’s state volleyball tournament. For Sutherland, it’s the third consecutive trip. The Lady Sailors pasted Potter-Dix in three sets, 25-11, 25-11, 25-10, in the D1-6 district final. Sam Kennedy led the Sutherland attack with 17 kills. In the D2-5 district final, Brady defeated Wallace in four sets, 25-22, 25-10, 23-25, 25-15, to make it to state for the second straight season. The Lady Eagles were third at state last year. Tonight the St. Patrick’s Lady Irish face Bridgeport in the C2-6 district championship at Creek Valley High School in Chappell. The Lady Irish are first in Class C2 in wild card points, meaning a trip to state is all but assured regardless of tonight’s outcome, but they’d love to capture a second straight district crown. First serve is set for 7:30.

Maxwell Wildcat Sports Update – November 1

Both the football team and volleyball team at Maxwell saw their seasons end this week. For the Wildcat gridders, their losing effort in the second round of the playoffs was still one to be proud of. FOOTBALL: Panthers, Irish, Swedes and Raiders Move to Quarterfinals

The glass slipper in the state football playoffs fits the paw of a Panther. Two interception returns for touchdowns in the fourth quarter lifted twelfth-seed Hershey to a 34-20 victory over Blue Hill and into the Class C2 quarterfinals for the first time ever. Colton Marshall and Dylan Johnson had the pick-sixes that helped Hershey stave off the Bobcats rally. Also moving on to the state quarterfinals in C2 are the St. Patrick’s Irish. Sean Keenan threw a touchdown pass and ran for three scores in a 32-6 win over West Holt. In class C1, thirteen-seed Gothenburg posted their second straight shutout, blanking Chadron 12-0 to advance. In Class D2, Medicine Valley also moved on, beating Creek Valley 64-42. Elsewhere, Chase County fell to Boone Central/Newman Grove 48-20 in class C1, and Maxwell lost 16-0 to Arapahoe in class D1.

VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Fall in District Final; Class D District Finals Tonight

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs lost in the finals of the A6 district volleyball tournament, falling in four sets to Lincoln Pius X 17-25, 21-25, 31-29, 20-25. Their season ends with a 19-12 record. Three Lincoln County teams play for the right to go to state tonight. In the D1-6 district final, Sutherland battles Potter-Dix at Creek Valley High School in Chappell. In the D2-5 district final at North Platte’s McGahan Activities Center, Brady faces Wallace. Both games are scheduled for 7 PM starts.

Hershey Panther Sports Update – October 31

It’s a big day in Hershey today as the Panthers play their first home playoff game ever. Head coach Ryan Smith talks about his team’s first ever playoff win last week over Perkins County, and what the team must do to keep their playoff run going tonight against Blue Hill. FOOTBALL: Who’s Ready for Round Two?

Round two of the state football playoffs in the C and D classes gets underway tonight, with local teams taking their home fields and hoping to continue their cinderella stories. In Class C2, Hershey hosts a playoff game for the first time in school history. The twelfth-seed Panthers take on Blue Hill at 5 PM. In class D1, the Maxwell Wildcats, fresh off their upset of Paxton, look to avenge another regular season defeat as they host Arapahoe at 6 PM. In class C1, Gothenburg heads to the panhandle in search of another playoff upset as they face Chadron at 3 PM. Elsewhere tonight, also in class C1, Chase County hosts top-seed Boone Central/Newman Grove at 3 PM. Medicine Valley hosts Garden County at 5PM in a D2 playoff game. And in North Platte, St. Patrick’s hosts West Holt in the C2 playoffs. ESPN Radio 1410 has the call of that game, with pregame coverage at 2:30 and the kickoff at 3 PM.
