Hershey Faces Minden in C1 State Tourney First Round (LISTEN LIVE on Q-Country 107.3)

The Hershey Lady Panthers are back at state after a three-year absence in the Class C1 tournament. They’ll have to be giant killers from the start, as they face top-ranked Minden in their first round game this morning. Tipoff is set for 10:45 from the Pershing Center. Q-Country 107.3 has the action, with the pregame show starting at 10:30.

Brady’s State Bid Falls Short – Paxton Books First Trip Since 2000

The Paxton Tigers are heading back to the boys basketball state tournament for the first time since 2000. The Tigers held off a stubborn Sandhills/Thedford squad 50-46 in the D1-6 subdistrict final in North Platte to book a trip to Lincoln next week. The win moves the third-ranked Tigers to 22-1 on the season. The Brady Eagles hoped to become the third Lincoln County team to qualify for this year’s state tournament, but that dream fell short as the Eagles lost to Hayes Center 62-52 in the D2-5 district championship game in Hershey. The Cardinals duplicated a regular season win over the Eagles to earn their trip to Lincoln. Brady’s season comes to an end with a 19-4 record. Hershey and St. Patrick’s will represent the county at the boys state tournament, beginning next Thursday.

Lincoln County boys basketball teams went two-for-two last night, as both Hershey and St. Patrick’s took home district championships and earned trips to the state tournament. In the C1-6 district championship game in Ogallala, Hershey jumped out to a 17-point first quarter lead and never looked back in a 55-37 victory over Kimball that sends the Panthers to Lincoln for the first time since 1994. The C2-6 district final in Sutherland saw the St. Pat’s Irish book a repeat ticket to state as they shut down Perkins County 49-39. Tonight, a third Lincoln County team will hope to join next weekend’s party. The Brady Eagles are in search of their first state tournament berth since 1998 as they take on Hayes Center in the D2-5 district final in Hershey, with tip-off scheduled for 7 PM.

The St. Patrick’s Irish are hoping to return to state for the second straight year as they take on Perkins County in the C2-6 district final in Sutherland. The Irish beat the Plainsmen in a regular season contest back on January 6. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action live, with pregame coverage at 7:15 and the tip-off at 7:30. The Hershey Panthers are hoping for their first state trip since 1994 as they face Kimball in the C1-6 district final in Ogallala. It’s a rematch of last season’s district final, won by Kimball, and a regular season game on December 16, also won by the Longhorns. Matthew Jensen’s buzzer-beating three-pointer lifted the St. Patrick’s Irish to their second straight C2-11 subdistrict championship last night. The Irish knocked off Southern Valley 48-45 to advance to a district final against Perkins County. The Irish were one of three Lincoln County squads to win subdistrict titles last night. In the C1-11 subdistrict final, Hershey raced past Gothenburg 59-44 to earn a rematch of last year’s C1-6 district final with Kimball. In the D2-9 subdistrict final, Brady eased to a 71-57 victory over Anselmo-Merna and will take on Hayes Center in their district final. The Sutherland Sailors fell short in the D1-12 district final, falling to Paxton 59-44. Subdistrict finals in Class C1 and C2 are played on Monday, with the D1 and D2 finals on Tuesday.

Four Lincoln County boys basketball teams are moving on to subdistrict finals after last night’s semifinal action across the state in the C and D classes. The St. Patrick’s Irish routed Alma 62-35 in the C2-11 subdistrict semifinal in Holdrege to move on to a matchup with Southern Valley. In the C1-11 subdistrict, Hershey defeated Ogallala 60-45 and will play Gothenburg in their subdistrict title game in Lexington. Sutherland defeated Maxwell 69-45 in a SPVA clash in the D1-12 semifinal in Bayard, and now look ahead to a game against third ranked Paxton. And seventh-ranked Brady eased to a 69-33 win over Eustis-Farnam in the D2-9 semifinals to set up a matchup with Anselmo-Merna in Cozad. Subdistrict finals are played on Thursday night.
