The Irish get a rematch against Kearney Catholic tonight in a Class C2 state semifinal at Knights of Columbus Field. In the second game of the regular season for both teams, Kearney Catholic topped St. Pat’s 24-10 in Kearney, holding the Irish to their lowest offensive output of the season and scoring more points than any other Irish opponent. The Stars have never been this far in the football playoffs in school history. The Irish and Stars kick off at 6 PM tonight. The Brady Lady Eagles swept past Stuart in three sets in the Class D2 Consolation Final in Grand Island on Saturday, capping off a third-place finish in a remarkable season. The Lady Eagles finish with a record of 27-5 and took third in their first trip to state in 14 years.

The second-ranked Brady Eagles lost in five sets to top ranked Howells in the semifinal round of the Class D2 state volleyball tournament in Grand Island yesterday. The Eagles will play Stuart in the consolation final Saturday at 2 PM at Grand Island Northwest High School. ESPN Radio 1410 will have a broadcast with pregame coverage starting at 1:45.
Brady Moves To Semifinals; Irish, Sailors Eliminated at State Volleyball
The Brady Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the Class D2 State volleyball tournament with a four-set victory over Wynot yesterday afternoon in Grand Island. The Eagles won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18, dropped the third set 20-25, and won the fourth set 25-15. This morning, Brady takes on top-seed Howells in the semis. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the action from Grand Island with pregame coverage at 8:45 AM and the first serve at 9. The two other Lincoln County teams to make the trip to the Tri Cities for State had short stays in the tournament, eliminated with first round defeats. In class C2, St. Patrick’s was swept by Hastings St. Cecilia, 18-25, 25-27, 19-25. In Class D1, Sutherland fell in four sets to BDS, 23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-22.

The 2011 state volleyball tournaments get underway today in the Tri Cities, and three Lincoln County schools are fighting to bring back a state championship. In Class C2, the St. Patrick’s Irish return to state for the second time in three years. They are the seventh seed and will take on Hastings St. Cecilia at Hastings High School. In Class D1, the Sutherland Sailors are back at state for a second straight year. They are the fifth seed, and will face BDS at Grand Island Northwest High School. In Class D2, Brady makes their first state appearance since 1997 as the fifth seed. They will face Wynot at Grand Island Central Catholic High School. STREAK STOPPERS: Irish Dethrone Bluehawks, Move To Semifinals
For the second straight season, the St. Patrick’s Irish are headed to the Class C2 football state semifinals after defeating Hastings St. Cecilia 13-7 last night in Hastings. Thatcher Vap’s two rushing touchdowns, and a dominant defensive performance, dethroned the two-time defending state champions and halted the longest active winning streak in Nebraska prep football at 36 games. The Irish move on to a rematch with Kearney Catholic, the only team to beat them this season, in the semifinals. The Stars topped the Irish 24-10 in Kearney in the third week of the regular season. The game will be held at Knights of Columbus Field in North Platte next Tuesday night at 6 PM. The game will be heard on ESPN Radio 1410.

It’s the quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs, as eight teams in each class C1 through D2 remain left to fight for a championship. The St. Patrick’s Irish have earned a rematch with two-time defending state champions Hastings St. Cecilia in the C2 quarterfinals. The Bluhawks topped the Irish 21-14 in the semifinal round last season. ESPN Radio 1410 will have all the action from Duncan Field in Hastings tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:30, leading to the kickoff at 6. The Gothenburg Swedes, fresh off their quadruple overtime upset victory over Ogallala last week, get another chance to avenge a regular season loss as they travel to Minden for a C1 quarterfinal against the Whippets. Sailors, Eagles Punch Tickets To State
The Sutherland Lady Sailors and Brady Lady Eagles are headed to the state volleyball tournament after district championship triumphs last night. For the Lady Sailors, it’s a return engagement, as they reached the state tourney last season. They powered past Twin Loup in four sets, 25-16, 25-13, 19-25, 25-11, in the D1-6 district final. The Lady Eagles fell one win shy of state last year, but didn’t miss their chance this time around. They routed Hayes Center in three sets, 25-23, 25-11, 25-12, in the D2-5 district final. For Brady, it’s their third ever trip to state volleyball tournament, and their first since 1997. They have a 25-4 record. Sutherland makes their ninth ever trip to state. They will trek to Grand Island with a 21-11 record. The state volleyball tournament begins next Thursday.

Irish, Swedes Move On In Football Playoffs
The St. Patrick’s Irish are headed back to the Class C2 quarterfinals for the second year in a row after knocking off Cambridge 31-20 last night at Knights of Columbus Field. Matthew Jensen rushed for two scores and the Irish took advantage of four turnovers as they defeated the Trojans for the second time this season. The Irish will travel to face two-time defending state champion Hastings St. Cecelia in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal, won by the Bluehawks, in the next round. Also moving on to the state quarterfinals was Gothenburg in C1 after a thrilling quadruple overtime win over second-seeded Ogallala in Gothenburg. Tyler Aden’s two-point conversion in the fourth OT gave the Swedes the 36-35 upset win. The Swedes take on Minden in the quarterfinal round. Minden beat Gothenburg 34-7 in the regular season.
