State Quarterfinals Tonight (Irish on ESPN Radio 1410, Swedes on Q-Country 107.3)

It’s the quarterfinal round of the state football playoffs, as eight teams in each class C1 through D2 remain left to fight for a championship. The St. Patrick’s Irish have earned a rematch with two-time defending state champions Hastings St. Cecilia in the C2 quarterfinals. The Bluhawks topped the Irish 21-14 in the semifinal round last season. ESPN Radio 1410 will have all the action from Duncan Field in Hastings tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 5:30, leading to the kickoff at 6. The Gothenburg Swedes, fresh off their quadruple overtime upset victory over Ogallala last week, get another chance to avenge a regular season loss as they travel to Minden for a C1 quarterfinal against the Whippets. Q-Country 107.3 will have the call of the Swedes game, with the pregame show at 5:30 and a 6 PM kick.

Irish, Swedes Move On In Football Playoffs

The St. Patrick’s Irish are headed back to the Class C2 quarterfinals for the second year in a row after knocking off Cambridge 31-20 last night at Knights of Columbus Field. Matthew Jensen rushed for two scores and the Irish took advantage of four turnovers as they defeated the Trojans for the second time this season. The Irish will travel to face two-time defending state champion Hastings St. Cecelia in a rematch of last year’s state semifinal, won by the Bluehawks, in the next round. Also moving on to the state quarterfinals was Gothenburg in C1 after a thrilling quadruple overtime win over second-seeded Ogallala in Gothenburg. Tyler Aden’s two-point conversion in the fourth OT gave the Swedes the 36-35 upset win. The Swedes take on Minden in the quarterfinal round. Minden beat Gothenburg 34-7 in the regular season.

Sailors, Eagles, Irish Win Subdistrict Volleyball Crowns

Three Lincoln County volleyball teams are one step closer to the state tournament next week in Grand Island. In the C2-11 subdistrict final, St. Patrick’s swept past Southwest to advance to a district final against their long-time nemesis, Perkins County. Sutherland took home the D1-12 subdistrict crown with a five-set triumph over Paxton, reversing a three-set sweep they suffered at the hands of the Tigers in the season-opening match for both teams. The Sailors will play Twin Loup in their district final. In the D2-9 subdistrict, Brady swept a one-loss Bertrand team to move to a district final for the second season in a row. They will face Hayes Center.

Friday: St. Pat’s vs Perkins County @ Sutherland  – 7 PM

St. Pats/Cambridge Kickoff Time Set

The St. Patrick’s Irish will host the Cambridge Trojans in the second round of the Class C2 Football Playoffs. St. Pat’s defeated Doniphan-Trumbull 50-28 last night, while Cambridge topped Sutton 35-16.

The Irish and Trojans will face off Wednesday night at Knights of Columbus Field. Kickoff time has been scheduled for 6 PM. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the broadcast with pregame coverage starting at 5:30.

St. Pat’s 50, Doniphan-Trumbull 28: Matthew Jensen, Andrew Vinton and Thatcher Vap each rushed for two touchdowns as the Irish topped the Cardinals. The Irish rushed for 442 yards as a team in the win. St. Pat’s will host Cambridge in the second round next Wednesday.

Prep Football Playoffs, Round One (Panthers on Q-Country 107.3, Irish on ESPN Radio 1410)

It’s playoff football time in Nebraska. Five Lincoln County teams embark on their postseason journeys today. The Hershey Panthers look for an upset in the first round of the Class C2 playoffs as they travel to unbeaten Crofton. Q-Country 107.3 has the action from Crofton this afternoon, with pregame coverage starting at 1:30 leading to a 2 PM kickoff. Also in the C2 playoffs, the fourth seed St. Patrick’s Irish host Doniphan-Trumbull. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action from that game, with the pregame show at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7. In the class D1 playoffs, Maxwell travels to Burwell for a game that kicks off at 6 PM. In class D2, both Brady and Wallace will represent Lincoln County. The Eagles visit Sumner-Eddyville-Miller with a 7 PM kick, and the Wildcats travel to St. Mary’s for a 3 PM kick.

With only two weeks left in the high school football season, some teams are pushing for a playoff berth while others just want to finish the year on a high note. The North Platte Bulldogs play their final home game of the season tonight as they host Norfolk. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action with the pregame show at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7. The Hershey Panthers hope to make a late-season statement as they play host to Cambridge in their home finale. North Star 56, North Platte 14 – Gators’ Mike Minter, son of former Husker star, rushes for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. In the first half. Gators cruise, Bulldogs drop fifth straight.

Gothenburg 14, Cozad 0 – Swedes rise up and shut out their biggest rivals on Homecoming night.

Chase County 7, Hershey 6 – A missed extra point in the final minute dooms the Panthers to a second straight loss. Hershey defense allowed no points.

8 North Platte St. Patrick’s 54, Sutherland 22 – Easy win for the Irish, their third straight, on Homecoming.

3 South Loup 73, Maxwell 8 – Bobcats running attack proves too much for the Wildcats, who lose their third in a row.

Medicine Valley 49, Brady 48 – Missed two-point conversion with three minutes left costs the Eagles, who see a three-game winning streak snapped.

Wallace 44, Wauneta-Palisade 37 – Wallace breaks a three-game losing streak with the road win.

Prep Football Preview, Week Six (Bulldogs on ESPN Radio 1410, Panthers on Q-Country 107.3)

The second half of the prep football season begins tonight with action in Week Six. The North Platte Bulldogs are hoping to halt their four-game losing streak tonight as they host Lincoln North Star. ESPN Radio 1410 will have all the action from Bauer Field at Memorial Stadium, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7.
