BASKETBALL: Subdistrict Finals Tonight (LISTEN TO C2-11 Final on ESPN Radio 1410)

Five Lincoln County girls basketball teams will hope to get one step closer to the state tournament with wins in their subdistrict championship games tonight. For the Hershey Lady Panthers and St. Pat’s Lady Irish, one’s road to state goes through the other. The two teams meet for the fourth time this season in the C2-11 subdistrict title game in McCook. Hershey leads the season series, two games to one. ESPN Radio 1410 has the action, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45. Elsewhere, in the D1-11 subdistrict final in North Platte, Sutherland aims for a third straight subdistrict crown as they face Paxton. The Brady Lady Eagles take on Eustis-Farnam in the D2-9 final in Gothenburg. And in the D2-10 subdistrict, the Wallace Lady Wildcats go for an upset against top-seeded Wauneta-Palisade.

BASKETBALL: Lincoln County Teams Roll to Subdistrict Finals

Five Lincoln County girls basketball teams have advanced to play in subdistrict championship games. The Hershey Lady Panthers and St. Patrick’s Lady Irish will play each other in the C2-11 final. Hershey topped Perkins County 54-29 and St. Pat’s cruised past Dundy County-Stratton 59-37. It will be the fourth meeting of the year between the two rivals, with Hershey having taken the last two after St. Pat’s won the first one. The Sutherland Lady Sailors advanced to the D1-11 final by routing SMC 48-22. In the D2-9 subdistrict, the Brady Lady Eagles hammered Bertrand 61-40 to advance. And in the D2-10 subdistrict, the Wallace Lady Wildcats moved on with their third win in three tries over Hayes Center, 53-38. Subdistrict championship games will be held across the state Thursday night.

BASKETBALL: Girls Subdistricts Underway (LISTEN to C2-11 Subdistrict on ESPN Radio 1410)

Girls basketball subdistrict action got underway across the state last night. One Lincoln County team took the floor last night – in the D1-11 play-in game, Maxwell fell to SMC 41-31. Tonight, in the D2-9 subdistrict, second-seed Brady faces Bertrand in Gothenburg. In the D1-11 subdistrict in North Platte, top-seed Sutherland will face SMC after their win last night. And in the D2-10 subdistrict, Wallace faces Hayes Center. But much of the local attention, and a good bit of statewide attention, will be focused on the C2-11 subdistrict in McCook, where two of the state’s best team’s take the floor. At 6 PM, top seed and third-ranked Hershey carries their eleven-game winning streak into their first-round game against Perkins County. At 7:30. it’s second-seed and fourth-ranked St. Patrick’s facing Dundy County-Stratton. ESPN Radio 1410 will bring you all the action, with pregame coverage starting at 5:45.

WRESTLING: Strong Showing For Lincoln County Schools as Twenty-Six Make State

Twenty-six Lincoln County wrestlers are headed to Omaha this weekend for the state tournament after district action this weekend. Nine North Platte Bulldogs qualified at the A3 district, with Jonah Navarrette, Aaron Houser, and Colton Thompson taking individual championships. In the C4 district, St. Pat’s got four wrestlers qualified for state, along with three Hershey Panther grapplers. Maxwell qualified five wrestlers in the D3 district, and Sutherland also qualified five in the D4 district. Maxwell also qualified for the first ever state team dual championships as well.

Local Hoops Weekend – Dawgs, Knights, Lady Irish, Lady Panthers Extend Streaks

The North Platte Bulldogs, St. Patrick’s Lady Irish and Hershey Lady Panthers maintained long winning streaks to highlight this weekend on the prep hardwood. The Dawgs topped North Star and Fremont to move their streak to five games. The class C2 fifth-ranked Lady Irish are also now on a five-game winning streak with weekend wins over Chase County and Cambridge. As for the class C2 fourth-ranked Lady Panthers, their streak is now ten after they took care of Maxwell and Dundy County-Stratton. Also staying hot over the weekend were the North Platte Community College Knights. The Knights hammered Western Nebraska 100-69 on Saturday night at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium. That’s their fifth straight win, and it keeps the Knights atop the Region IX South Sub-region standings.

BASKETBALL: Four Ranked Area Teams Cruise

State-ranked and on a roll, the St. Patrick’s Irish and Lady Irish cruised to easy wins over Maxwell last night at the McGahan Activities Center. The fifth-ranked Lady Irish defeated the Lady Wildcats 74-28, while the fourth-ranked Irish boys beat the Wildcats 70-17. Two other ranked girls basketball teams were in action last night. The Class D1 tenth-ranked Sutherland Lady Sailors routed Creek Valley 74-24, and Class D2 ninth-ranked Brady topped SMC 45-27.

BASKETBALL: Irish, Lady Panthers Win SPVA Tournaments

On Saturday night the SPVA basketball champions were crowned. The St. Patrick’s Irish boys defeated Chase County 44-33 behind Mark Mayfield’s 22 points to claim the conference title for the second straight year. In the girls championship game, Maegan Hiatt scored 15 points as the Hershey Lady Panthers knocked off St. Pat’s 44-30 for their first SPVA title since 2005.

BASKETBALL: SPVA Boys Semifinal Action

The SPVA boys basketball championship game is set. It will be the St. Patrick’s Irish taking on the Chase County Longhorns on Championship Saturday. In semifinal last night at North Platte Community College, the Irish handled Perkins County 53-39 and the Longhorns defeated Hershey 47-38. Tonight in the girls semifinals, Hershey faces Chase County and St. Pat’s takes on Sutherland.

VOLLEYBALL: Byrn Commits to NPCC, Adding to Strong Local Recruiting Class

St. Patrick’s senior Samantha Byrn became the third Lincoln County prep volleyball standout to commit to Sally Thalken’s North Platte Community College program this winter after making her signing official yesterday. Byrn was a key contributor to an Irish team that finished in fourth place at the Class C2 state tournament in November. She joins Sutherland seniors Sam Kennedy and Joli Hopping as future Lady Knights from the county.

Lady Sailors, Lady Longhorns Advance in SPVA Tourney

The Sutherland Lady Sailors and Chase County Lady Longhorns advanced to the semifinals of the SPVA girls basketball tournament with victories last night. Chase County edged Perkins County 37-36, and Sutherland routed Maxwell 74-28. Tonight in the SPVA boys basketball tournament, semifinal action will pit top-seed St. Pat’s against Perkins County at 6 PM, and second-seed Chase County against Hershey at 7:30.
