The St. Patrick’s Lady Irish advanced to the semifinals of the Class C2 state tournament in Lincoln with a 47-34 victory over Blue Hill in first-round play yesterday afternoon. The Lady Irish trailed by one point at halftime, but went on a 10-0 run in the third quarter, keyed by five straight points from Candace Shelton, to take the lead for good. Shelby Allberry’s 15 points led the way for St. Pat’s in the victory. Brittany Lawrence added 12 points. The Lady Irish will take on Crofton this afternoon at 2 PM at the Pershing Center in Lincoln. Lincoln County boys basketball teams went two-for-two last night, as both Hershey and St. Patrick’s took home district championships and earned trips to the state tournament. In the C1-6 district championship game in Ogallala, Hershey jumped out to a 17-point first quarter lead and never looked back in a 55-37 victory over Kimball that sends the Panthers to Lincoln for the first time since 1994. The C2-6 district final in Sutherland saw the St. Pat’s Irish book a repeat ticket to state as they shut down Perkins County 49-39. Tonight, a third Lincoln County team will hope to join next weekend’s party. The Brady Eagles are in search of their first state tournament berth since 1998 as they take on Hayes Center in the D2-5 district final in Hershey, with tip-off scheduled for 7 PM.

In the D2-9 subdistrict final, Brady eased to a 71-57 victory over Anselmo-Merna and will take on Hayes Center in their district final. The Sutherland Sailors fell short in the D1-12 district final, falling to Paxton 59-44. Subdistrict finals in Class C1 and C2 are played on Monday, with the D1 and D2 finals on Tuesday.

In the C1-11 subdistrict, Hershey defeated Ogallala 60-45 and will play Gothenburg in their subdistrict title game in Lexington. Sutherland defeated Maxwell 69-45 in a SPVA clash in the D1-12 semifinal in Bayard, and now look ahead to a game against third ranked Paxton. And seventh-ranked Brady eased to a 69-33 win over Eustis-Farnam in the D2-9 semifinals to set up a matchup with Anselmo-Merna in Cozad. Subdistrict finals are played on Thursday night.

State Wrestling Roundup: Denney Takes Title as Bulldogs Finish Third
Zack Denney became North Platte High School’s first individual state wrestling champion in two decades with his win in the 145-pound division at the state championships in Omaha on Saturday. Denney wrapped up his senior season with a 49-1 record and helped lift North Platte to a third-place team finish, the best in school history. Bradan Erdmann finished as the runner up in the heavyweight class, and five other Bulldog wrestlers finished as medalists. In the Class D state tournament, St. Patrick’s finished 13th as a team, led by fifth place finishes for Adam Pasquinelly at 120 pounds and Barrett Pieper at 160 pounds, and Maxwell ended up 15th as a team, paced by third-place finishes for Drew Riggs at 126 pounds and Connor Norton at 170 pounds.
