VOLLEYBALL: Bulldogs Fall in District Final; Class D District Finals Tonight

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs lost in the finals of the A6 district volleyball tournament, falling in four sets to Lincoln Pius X 17-25, 21-25, 31-29, 20-25. Their season ends with a 19-12 record. Three Lincoln County teams play for the right to go to state tonight. In the D1-6 district final, Sutherland battles Potter-Dix at Creek Valley High School in Chappell. In the D2-5 district final at North Platte’s McGahan Activities Center, Brady faces Wallace. Both games are scheduled for 7 PM starts.

VOLLEYBALL: Subdistrict Final Results, Bulldogs Play in District Tournament Tonight

Four Lincoln County teams took home subdistrict volleyball championships last night. St. Pat’s continued their special season with a three-set win over Hershey in the C2-11 final. Sutherland took down Paxton in three sets in the D1-11 final. Brady came back from two sets to one down to beat Bertrand in the D2-9 final, while Wallace did the same against Wauneta-Palisade in the D2-10 final. District finals take place this Thursday and Friday.

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs play in the A6 district tournament tonight at Lincoln Pius X. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a 18-11 record. They are the second seed in the district and will take on Omaha Benson in their first-round match at 5:30. The Bunnies are 15-15 on the season. The winner will take on either Pius or Kearney in the championship match at 7 PM.

VOLLEYBALL: Subdistrict Play Underway Tonight

Subdistrict volleyball action opens tonight in the C and D classes statewide. Subdistricts with five teams have their play-in games and semifinals tonight. In the D1-11 subdistrict at the McGahan Activities Center, Maxwell plays SMC in the play-in game at 4 PM, with the winner facing top-seed Sutherland at 7 PM. In the D2-10 subdistrict at McCook, third-seed Wallace plays Medicine Valley at 6:30.

Other local teams in action include Hayes Center and Maywood, who play in the D2-10 play-in game with the winner playing top-seed Wauneta-Palisade; Paxton, who faces Hitchcock County in a D1-11 semifinal; South Loup, who faces North Central in the D1-8 play-in game in Broken Bow; and Mullen and Sandhills/Thedford, who play in a semifinal in the D2-11 subdistrict in Mullen.

FOOTBALL: Round One Playoff Scores

A pair of major upsets have Lincoln County teams moving on in the state football playoffs. In the Class C2 playoffs, twelfth-seed Hershey reversed a regular season loss to fifth-seed Perkins County and dominated the Plainsmen 27-7. In class D1, thirteen-seed Maxwell also avenged a regular season defeat, routing fourth-seed Paxton 40-12. In other local playoff action, third-seed St. Patrick’s blanked Centura 28-0 in a C2 matchup, and twelfth-seed Wallace was eliminated in a 56-28 loss to Garden County in the D2 bracket. Around the area, the standout result was another upset – thirteenth-seed Gothenburg defeating fourth-seed Cozad 23-0 in Class C1. Chase County also advanced in C1 with a win. South Loup and SMC suffered first-round defeats in Class D1, while Medicine Valley moved on and Hayes Center and Mullen were eliminated in class D2.

FOOTBALL: Playoff Action Opens Tonight

The state football playoffs begin tonight for the C and D classes, meaning four Lincoln County teams begin their quest for a state championship. The St. Patrick’s Irish are unbeaten and the third seed in the West bracket in class C2, hoping to advance one step further after state semifinal appearances the last two years. They host Centura tonight in their first round game. ESPN Radio 1410 will have all the action, with pregame coverage at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7 PM. Also tonight in the class C2 playoffs, twelfth-seeded Hershey hopes to reverse a seven-point regular season loss to Perkins County when they visit the fifth-seeded Plainsmen. In class D1, thirteenth-seed Maxwell also wants to avenge a regular season loss as they travel to battle Paxton. And in class D2, twelfth-seeded Wallace heads north to Oshkosh to play unbeaten fifth-seeded Banner County.

Class C1:

#9 Chase County (5-3) @ #8 Ord (5-3) – 6 PM – The physical Longhorns won three of their last four in the regular season, while the Chanticleers lost two of their last three.

#13 Gothenburg (4-4) @ #4 Cozad (6-2) – 7 PM – The Haymakers topped the Swedes 42-7 in the regular season, with Jake Paulsen’s big night helping to spoil homecoming in Gothenburg. But the Swedes made the state quarterfinals last season and they’ll hope to have a similar surprise run in them this time.

Class C2:

#12 Hershey (4-4) @ #5 Perkins County (7-1) – 6 PM (mountain time) – The Plainsmen held off the Panthers 14-7 in the regular season. Can the Hershey defense duplicate their outstanding effort against Perkins County star QB Elliot Carlson?

#14 Centura (4-4) @ #3 St. Patrick’s (8-0) – 7 PM – The Irish went unbeaten in the regular season for the seventh time. Their defense has allowed just 38 points in eight games this season. LISTEN LIVE on ESPN Radio 1410.

Class D1:

#9 SMC (6-2) @ #8 Elm Creek (7-1) – 6:30 PM – It’s the first trip to the playoffs for the Stapleton-McPherson County co-op, who won three straight games to close their regular season.

#12 South Loup (3-5) @ #5 Arapahoe (8-0) – 6 PM – The Bobcats had an up-and-down regular season marred by injuries but won their season finale and are playoff experienced, having reached the quarterfinals the last two seasons.

#13 Maxwell (3-5) @ #4 Paxton (6-2) – 6 PM (mountain time) – The Tigers trounced the Wildcats 54-18 in the regular season thanks to big plays in special teams. Each of Maxwell’s losses this year came to playoff teams.

Class D2:

#12 Wallace (5-3) @ #5 Garden County (8-0) – 4 PM (mountain time) – The Wildcats are back in the playoffs for the tenth time in eleven years.

#13 Potter-Dix (5-3) @ #4 Medicine Valley (8-0) – 5 PM – The Raiders, led by star QB Riley Garey, made the quarterfinals last season and are hungry for more this year.

#14 Hayes Center (4-4) @ #3 Kenesaw (7-1) – 6 PM – The high-powered Cardinals have scored over 50 points four times this season – but they’ve also allowed over 50 points four times.

#10 Mullen (5-3) @ #7 Spalding/Spalding Academy (5-3) – 6 PM – The Broncos shook off a slow start and won four of their last five to get back to the postseason.

FOOTBALL: Local Teams Ready for Playoffs

The playoff fields for the Nebraska prep football postseason were officially set on Saturday. In Class C1, Ogallala, Broken Bow, Chase County, Cozad and Gothenburg are in the tournament, with the latter two rivals set for a first round rematch of Cozad’s 42-7 win in Gothenburg earlier this season. In Class C2, the St. Patrick’s Irish are the third seed in the west bracket, and Hershey and Perkins County will face each other in the first round, a rematch of the Plainsmen’s 14-7 triumph from the regular season. Class D1’s playoff field features SMC, South Loup, and Paxton and Maxwell, who face each other in the first round. That’s also a rematch, as Paxton dropped Maxwell 54-18 in Paxton earlier. And in Class D2, Wallace, Mullen, Hayes Center and Medicine Valley are playoff bound, with the unbeaten Raiders the fourth seed out west. The playoffs in the C and D classes start on Thursday night.

Wildcat football is all finished with their regular season. They can take a week to get healthy and start to focus on the playoffs. FOOTBALL: Week Seven Preview

Week Eight of the prep football season sees several area teams take the field with high stakes on the line. The North Platte Bulldogs can keep playoff hopes alive as they hit the road to take on Grand Island. ESPN Radio 1410 will have the call of that contest, with pregame coverage underway at 6:30 and the kickoff at 7. In a pair of crucial district games, St. Pat’s looks to run their record to 7-0 on the road against Dundy County-Stratton, while Hershey aims to take down visiting Cambridge. If both the Irish and Panthers win, their game next week will be for the district title. In Class D1 action, Maxwell shoots for a third-straight win as they host surprising SMC while Sutherland makes a visit to Paxton in search of their first win. And in Class D2, in the final game of their regular season, the Wallace Wildcats try and finish strong in what could be a thriller at unbeaten Medicine Valley.
