Volleyball Adds Three Talented Newcomers

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska volleyball head coach John Cook announced the 2016 Husker newcomers on National Letter of Intent Signing Day Wednesday.

Setter Hunter Atherton, outside hitter Alex Ratzlaff and middle blocker Lauren Stivrins will be freshmen for the Huskers in 2016.

“We are excited to have these three outstanding student-athletes join our program,” Cook said. “They are tremendous competitors with great work ethics who are going to make a huge impact on our team on and off the court. We always look for student-athletes who are great leaders and teammates, and these three possess those qualities. Jeriah Horne Signs with Nebraska

Lincoln – Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced Wednesday that Jeriah Horne (Overland Park, Kan.) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to attend the University of Nebraska and play basketball for the Huskers beginning in the 2016-17 season.

Horne, who is ranked among the top 150 players by Rivals.com, is a two-time first-team all-state pick and continues Nebraska’s run of players from the Kansas City metro area, a region which has produced current Husker starters Shavon Shields and Benny Parker. Huskers Sign Third Straight Top 15 Class

Lincoln – A solid group of five 2016 high school seniors including a pair of top 100 national recruits gave the Nebraska women’s basketball team its third consecutive top-15 recruiting class, Coach Connie Yori announced on Wednesday.

Yori and the Huskers will welcome Mi’Cole Cayton (5-9, G, Stockton, Calif./St. Mary’s), Kathleen Doyle (5-9, G, LaGrange, Ill./Benet Academy), Nicea Eliely (6-1, G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart), Grace Mitchell (6-2, G/F, Wellington, Kan./Wellington) and Hannah Whitish (5-9, G, Barneveld, Wis./Barneveld) in a class that was ranked No. 14 nationally by Blue Star. Huskers Fight Off Michigan State, 3-2, For Fifth Straight Win

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 8 Nebraska volleyball team won its fifth straight match with a thrilling 3-2 (25-19, 27-29, 23-25, 25-18, 16-14) victory over Michigan State at Jenison Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

The Huskers (21-4, 12-3 Big Ten) found a way back from a 2-1 deficit on the road behind a career-high-tying 21 kills from Kadie Rolfzen to go with 14 digs and five blocks. Kelsey Fien had 13 kills, while Mikaela Foecke had 12. Cecilia Hall had nine kills, and Amber Rolfzen had seven kills and six blocks. NEW YORK (AP) — Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper is one of three finalists for the NL MVP award who played for teams that had disappointing seasons.

Harper is joined by Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt and Cincinnati’s Joey Votto, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced Tuesday.

Suspension upheld for Broncos CB Aqib Talib

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Star cornerback Aqib Talib will sit out the Denver Broncos’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday after losing his appeal of a one-game suspension for poking a player in the eye.
