Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team practiced for just under 90 minutes without pads at Memorial Stadium on Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Wisconsin.

After practice, Coach Riley talked about injuries to the team. Sophomore linebacker Josh Banderas, senior cornerback Daniel Davie and junior linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey continue to make progress in their recoveries, but all will miss Saturday’s game. Riley added that freshman defensive end Freedom Akinmoladun hurt his knee and will not play against Wisconsin.
“We hope it’s a two week deal,” Riley said about Akinmoladun. “It might be good timing, we will see how he is tomorrow. He has practiced a couple days.”
Riley also updated the status of junior defensive end Greg McMullen saying he will be ready to switch from defensive end to defensive tackle if junior Vincent Valentine is not able to play on Saturday. Riley elaborated on the lack of depth on the defensive line saying, “It’s all dominos. That was a deep position a while back but it is not anymore. It’s a concern.”
Riley also said that true freshman running back Jordan Stevenson may take on a role in special teams on Saturday, which would mark his first action of the season. Stevenson could help the Nebraska kickoff return unit, Riley said, while he also noted that sophomore punt returner and wide receiver De’Mornay Pierson-El is ready to go on Saturday after making his season debut in limited action last weekend at Illinois.
“He has been practicing and had a little scare the other day but that’s all it was,” Riley said regarding Pierson-El.
Riley also likes the mentality of the team going into Saturday, saying the team has bounced back from losing three games in the final seconds.
“It has been really what I thought it would be.” Riley said. “They have worked well. The work and the coaching with them has been good. The other part we can only prove by playing. But I have good faith that it is going to be good.”
Saturday’s game against Wisconsin kicks off at 2:30 p.m. (CT) at Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Nebraska. The game will be televised on ABC/ESPN2/WatchESPN.
