Choo hits for the cycle as Rangers rout Rockies 9-0

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo hit for the cycle and Matt Harrison earned his first win in 14 months as the Texas Rangers routed the Colorado Rockies 9-0 Tuesday night.

Delino DeShields had a career-high four hits and Prince Fielder homered for the Rangers, who won for only the third time in 13 games.

Choo, who had three RBIs, doubled in the second inning, homered in the fourth and singled in the fifth. He completed the cycle with a triple to center leading off the ninth.

It was the eighth cycle in franchise history and first since Alex Rios did it Sept. 23, 2013, against Houston.

Boston Red Sox All-Star Brock Holt was the only other major leaguer to hit for the cycle this season, on June 16 against Atlanta.

Dyson’s 2-run single lifts Royals past Pirates, 3-1

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jarrod Dyson hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Dyson scored later in the inning on Alcides Escobar’s single to put the Royals up 3-0, and they won for the 11th time in 14 games.

Wade Davis (6-1) struck out Andrew McCutchen swinging to end the eighth with two Pirates on base to pick up the victory.

Greg Holland survived a shaky ninth, allowing a run on four hits and a walk, but struck out Gregory Polanco with the bases loaded for his 21st save in 24 opportunities.

Pirates starter Gerrit Cole (13-4), who leads the majors in victories, was charged with all three runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

Royals option Ventura to Triple-A Omaha

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have optioned right-hander Yordano Ventura to Triple-A Omaha after a string of ineffective outings for the opening-day starter.

The 24-year-old Ventura, who can run his fastball into triple digits, is 4-7 with a 5.19 ERA in 14 starts this year. He spent nearly a month on the disabled list with inflammation of his ulnar nerve.

Left-hander Jason Vargas came off the disabled list and got the start Tuesday night against Pittsburgh. Vargas had been sidelined by a left flexor strain.

Ventura gave up six runs and 10 hits in four-plus innings in Monday night’s 10-7 loss to the Pirates. He is 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA in his last four starts.

After going 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA as a rookie and throwing seven scoreless innings to beat San Francisco in Game 6 of the World Series, the Royals signed Ventura to a $23 million, five-year contract at the end of spring training.

Nebraska guard will transfer from women’s basketball team

chandler smithLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska sophomore guard Chandler Smith plans to transfer from the Husker women’s basketball team.

Nebraska coach Connie Yori said in a statement released Tuesday that Smith, a 6-foot guard from Brewster, Washington, wanted to be closer to home.

Yori called Smith “a good person and a good player,” adding she was disappointed in her decision but wished her the best.

Smith played in 18 games in her freshman season, with one start. She was hampered by a foot injury that limited her playing time early in the season.

She averaged 1.8 points and 1.9 rebounds a game.

Smith was a two-time Washington Class 1A player of the year.

Chiefs waive rookie Cox after domestic assault charge

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived defensive back Justin Cox, who was charged with domestic assault, burglary and trespassing for an incident that occurred Monday in Starkville, Mississippi.

Cox was being held on $40,433 bond. The case is still under investigation.

This is the second time in the past year that Cox has been arrested for an incidence of domestic violence, though the previous charge was ultimately dropped. Cox instead pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing in January.

Cox signed with the Chiefs after going undrafted out of Mississippi State, in part because of his off-the-field issues. He was suspended the final three games last year after his arrest.

Paulsen has single in 9th, lifts Rockies past Rangers 8-7

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Ben Paulsen hit a tiebreaking single with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and the Colorado Rockies recovered from blowing a seven-run lead to beat the Texas Rangers 8-7 on Monday night.

Troy Tulowitzki homered and Nolan Arenado had two RBIs for Colorado, which has won a season-best five in a row at home.

Prince Fielder had two hits and three RBIs and Adrian Beltre had three hits for the Rangers, who have lost 10 of 12.

Beltre’s second double of the night tied the game at 7 in the ninth against closer John Axford (2-2) but the Rockies rallied in the bottom of the inning. Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez led off with singles off Tanner Scheppers (3-1). One out later Paulsen lined a single to left-center to score pinch-runner Drew Stubbs from second base.

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Ishikawa had three extra-base hits and drove in four runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates outslugged the Kansas City Royals 10-7 Monday night.

Ishikawa, who was 1 for 13 with one RBI in nine games since the Pirates claimed him on waivers July 5, hit a two-run double in a four-run second. He homered in the fifth with Jung Ho Kang aboard.

A.J. Burnett (8-3) won despite giving up a season-high five earned runs and 11 hits — including two homers — in his initial start since his first career trip to the All-Star Game. The 38-year-old right-hander pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second.

The Royals cut the deficit to 8-7 in the seventh and chased Burnett. Mike Moustakas homered leading off the inning. Eric Hosmer had an RBI triple for his third hit and scored on Kendrys Morales’ groundout.
