Trout homers leading off, and AL All-Stars top NL 6-3

allstar gameCINCINNATI (AP) — Mike Trout flashed the skill that puts him at the front of baseball’s new generation, just moments after four of the all-time greats had just walked off the field.

Trout became the first player in 38 years to homer leading off an All-Star game, Prince Fielder drove in two runs to show this era is not just about the kids, and AL arms outdueled their more accomplished NL rivals.

A new-look All-Star Game finished with the same old result. The AL beat the NL 6-3 Tuesday night and will open the World Series at home for the 10th time in 13 years.

Alex Gordon is an iconic name and a popular figure in Lincoln, at the University of Nebraska, across the state and wherever Husker fans live or visit. He’s the only National Player of the Year in Nebraska baseball history and one of only two Huskers ever named a two-time first-team All-American. Gordon received those honors in 2004 and 2005.

Even though a groin injury prevents Gordon from making what would have been his first career MLB All-Star Game start tonight in Cincinnati, we salute the Lincoln native’s stature and bestow the Honorary Captain title on our All-Time Nebraska All-Star Baseball Team. Gordon personifies characteristics that Nebraska fans cherish. His team-first mindset, humble spirit and passionate work ethic enabled Gordon to emulate those priceless virtues while growing up in Lincoln and explain why he draws droves of Husker fans to so many Major League Baseball parks.

In my opinion, Gordon might have been the most influential catalyst for the incredible loyalty Kansas City fans are now known for. He exemplifies the drive and unity the Royals’ needed in their magic carpet ride to the seventh game of the 2014 World Series. TV cameras perpetually showcase fans in royal blue chanting “Let’s go Royals!” But patches of red throughout major league stadiums and spirited chants of “Go Big Red” often are woven into that foundation. No wonder Gordon loves and appreciates intensely loyal Royal fans. He grew up one himself, and it’s something he still values.

Ty-Lawson-Nuggets-Denver

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol — his second DUI arrest this year.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jennifer Cassidy says Lawson was driving at a high rate of speed before being pulled over around 2 a.m. Tuesday on state Route 101 in Hollywood.

Cassidy says Lawson displayed several signs of intoxication. Jail records show he was released on $5,000 bail.

The Denver Nuggets said the team was aware of the arrest and would have no further comment.

Lawson was arrested on suspicion of DUI last January in Denver. He is expected in court in that case on Friday.

Rough play is riskier than heading in youth soccer: Study

youth soccerCHICAGO (AP) — Heading takes the heat in youth soccer, but a study says limiting rough play might be a better way to prevent concussions and other injuries.

The nine-year look at U.S. high school games found that over 1 in 4 concussions occurred when players used their head to hit the ball. But more than half of these heading-related concussions were caused by collisions with another player rather than with the ball. These included head-to-head, elbow-to-head and shoulder-to-head contact.

Dawn Comstock is a University of Colorado public health researcher who led the study. She says soccer rules prohibit most player-to-player contact and notes that rough play has become more common at all levels of the game.

The study was published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

Demaryius Thomas gets good news about his family

Demaryius Thomas
Demaryius Thomas

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Demaryius Thomas received some good news Monday and it had nothing to do with his contract stalemate with the Denver Broncos: his mother is getting out of prison early.

President Barack Obama cut the prison sentences of 46 non-violent drug offenders, and one of them was Katina Smith, who has been incarcerated in Georgia since 2000.

She and her mother, Minnie Pearl Thomas, were arrested on drug trafficking charges in 1999 when Thomas was 11 years old.

Smith was scheduled to be released in 2017. Now, she’ll be released on Nov. 10.

Smith had declined to testify against her mother in exchange for a reduced sentence. Her mother received a life sentence as a multiple offender.
