Volquez Leads Royals to 7-1 Over Twins in Series Opener

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Edinson Volquez dodged trouble for seven innings, and the Kansas City Royals scored a pair of runs on wild pitches before pounding the bumbling Minnesota Twins, 7-1 on Monday night Alcides Escobar returned from a sprained knee to score a run, and Kendrys Morales and Paulo Orlando drove in a pair each as the Royals finally figured out Twins nemesis Kyle Gibson.

The right-hander gave up four runs in five-plus innings. Gibson (1-2) had earned the win in his first four starts against Kansas City, including a dominant performance in a 3-1 victory last week at Target Field.

Volquez (2-1) was more than his match Monday night at Kauffman Stadium. He allowed five hits while striking out five with only one walk, wiggling out of jams whenever he got into them.

The Royals’ defense, featuring three Gold Glove winners, sure helped him out.

Oberg was 1-0 with a 10.13 ERA in three games with the Rockies this season.

Chargers’ Woodhead, Dunlap Deflect Talk of LA, Rivers Trade

NFL: San Diego Chargers-Training CampSAN DIEGO (AP) — The Chargers are still in San Diego and Philip Rivers is still their quarterback.

That’s all Danny Woodhead and King Dunlap were concerned about as the Chargers — who for the time being remain Southern California’s only NFL team — began offseason workouts Monday amid uncertainty on two fronts.

Woodhead says he’s been tuning out talk of the Chargers possibly moving to Los Angeles, as well as rumors that Rivers, who’s entering the final year of his contract, could be traded to Tennessee so the Chargers can draft Marcus Mariota.

Says Woodhead of Rivers, “We definitely like him as our quarterback.”

Says Dunlap: “That’s our quarterback. What he brings, not a lot of guys have.”

Chiefs’ Houston Skips Report Date for Offseason Program

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs reported for the start of their offseason program on Monday.

Well, most of them did.

The most notable absence was All-Pro linebacker Justin Houston, who was given the franchise tag after a record-setting sack season. Houston still has not signed his tender as the Chiefs and his representatives try to reach an agreement on a long-term deal.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he was not surprised that Houston skipped the voluntary workout, and that he understands the business side of the equation. But Reid also sounded certain that the two sides would eventually come to an agreement.

Houston set a Chiefs record with 22 sacks last season.

ESPN Expresses Concern Over Verizon’s New TV Packages

espnNEW YORK (AP) — ESPN is expressing concern that new television packages being offered by Verizon do not comply with its existing agreements.

Verizon launched FiOS Custom TV on Sunday. The base package, which costs about $55, has more than 35 channels — such as AMC, CNN and Food Network — plus two additional themed channel packs. The offer does not include internet service.

But the channels included in the base package do not include ESPN or ESPN2. Those channels are available through a sports themed channel pack.

ESPN said in a statement that Verizon’s new packages “would not be authorized by our existing agreements.”

It says “our contracts clearly provide that neither ESPN nor ESPN2 may be distributed in a separate sports package.”

Verizon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Man Charged in Fight Over Whether LeBron or Jordan is Better

odd-newsSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Police say an argument over whether Michael Jordan or LeBron James is a better basketball player ended in a Pennsylvania man’s arrest on aggravated assault and other charges.

22-year-old Daniel Mondelice was first arrested early Saturday after fighting with another man over whether Air Jordan or King James reigns supreme.

It wasn’t clear which player Mondelice backed.

He was released on bond and told not to return. Instead, he went to stay with a woman at another apartment. But police were called there Saturday night when they say Mondelice became argumentative and refused to leave. It’s not clear what that argument was about.

Online court records show Mondelice remained jailed Monday and was unable to post bail. A defense attorney wasn’t listed.

Tony Romo Pokes Fun at Pats with Deflated Football Joke

deflated-footballARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Tony Romo wants country fans to know that when he throws, his footballs are properly inflated.

The Cowboys quarterback poked fun at the New England Patriots on Sunday night during the 2015 Academy of Country Music Awards, referencing the scandal sparked in the playoffs when New England was found using deflated footballs.

Romo was tossing balls with country stars Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton when Shelton asked: “This isn’t one of those deflated balls?”

Romo replied: “We’re the Dallas Cowboys. We have real balls.”

The NFL is investigating the Pats’ use of deflated footballs in the AFC championship game, with no timetable on its conclusions.

After confronting the flap, the Patriots beat Seattle in the Super Bowl.

The Cowboys lost in the divisional round to the Green Bay Packers.
