Reddick’s 3-Run Homers Sends A’s to 5-0 Victory Over Royals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Josh Reddick hit a three-run homer, Jesse Hahn and Jesse Chavez combined for a seven-hitter, and the Oakland Athletics rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Yordano Ventura (2-1) gave up all five runs in the fourth inning, right before hitting A’s third baseman Brett Lawrie with what appeared to be a retaliatory pitch for an incident the previous night.

Stephen Vogt and former Royals designated hitter Billy Butler each drove in a run for Oakland, and Hahn (1-1) scattered three hits and a walk over 5 1-3 innings before leaving with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand.

Chavez then picked him up with 3 2-3 innings for the save, completing the fifth shutout by Oakland in its first 12 games.

Greinke, Dodgers Beat Rockies 6-3

colorado-rockiesLOS ANGELES (AP) — Zack Greinke won his 14th straight decision against an NL West rival, Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-3 Saturday night.

Greinke (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 6 2-3 innings, improving to 20-1 with a 1.95 ERA in 30 starts against NL West teams since signing with the Dodgers in December 2012.

Joel Peralta pitched a hitless ninth for his third save in as many chances.

Gonzalez, who led the majors last season with 116 RBIs, has 14 in his first 11 games and is batting .523 (23 for 44).

Jordan Lyles (1-1) gave up four runs, five hits and five walks in six innings, dropping to 0-3 with a 6.84 ERA in four starts against the Dodgers.

Lyles walked three of his first four batters in the fifth, including Yasiel Puig, who stared down the Lyles after a belt-high wild pitch that just missed hitting the batter. Puig sat out the previous three games because of tightness in his left hamstring.

Troy Tulowitzki’s run-scoring single put Colorado ahead in the first, but Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single tied the score in the second.

After the Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the third, Gonzalez hit what appeared to be a double-play grounder to Tulowitzki at shortstop. But second baseman DJ LeMahieu’s relay throw in the dirt couldn’t be handled by first baseman Justin Morneau, and Greinke scored the go-ahead run.

Gonzalez made it 4-1 in the fifth with a two-run, opposite-field double to left-center that Blackmon missed on a diving attempt in the warning track.

LeMahieu’s two-run homer in the seventh, on Greinke’s 103rd and final pitch, ended the LeMahieu’s 52 at-bats homerless streak at Dodger Stadium. Puig and Howie Kendrick had RBI doubles in the bottom half against Brooks Brown.

Storm Sweep Lancers, Move to Conference Finals

Tri-City-StormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm completed a sweep of the Omaha Lancers Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center, winning 3-1 in Game 3 to move on to the Western Conference Final.

Storm goals were scored by Dan Labosky, Mason Appleton and Chris Wilkie, while Alec Dillon stopped 28 shots to record his third win of the series.

Tri-City erased an early 1-0 deficit early in the first when Labosky evened the score after an early power play goal from Shane Gersich.

Labosky’s second tally of the series came just 2:19 after the opening Omaha goal with an assist from Chase Berger. Berger took a backhand shot that was stopped by Lancers’ netminder Kris Oldham, but the puck remained free in the crease for Labosky to slap home.

The game stayed even at 1-1 until early on in the second when Appleton scored on an impressive passing play. Bobby Nardella started the rush with a cross-ice feed to Jake Wahlin to get into the Omaha zone. Then, with Appleton bearing down on the net, Wahlin placed the puck right on the Michigan State commit’s stick for a redirection that got by Oldham.

Tri-City then got an insurance goal from Wilkie in the first minute of the third to open up the lead. The forward scored his first of the playoffs on the power play with a blast from inside the blue line. Assists on the goal went to Nardella and Appleton.

Omaha netminder Kris Oldham stopped 36 shots for Omaha in the loss, as Tri-City outshot the Lancers 39-29 in the game.

The series win was the first time Tri-City has advanced in the playoffs since 2007 when it beat the Sioux City Musketeers in seven games.

The Storm will face either Sioux City or Sioux Falls in the Western Conference Final. Sioux Falls currently leads Sioux City 2-1 in their Western Conference Semifinal series. More information will be available in the coming days at stormhockey.com.

Huskers Fall to Buckeyes 2-1 in Extras

husker baseballLincoln – On a day when both starting pitcher took the mound in the 10th inning, the No. 23 Nebraska baseball team (29-12, 6-5 Big Ten) dropped its first extra-inning game of the year and saw its six-game winning streak against the Ohio State Buckeyes (25-10, 8-3) come to an end. With the game tied 1-1 going into the 10th, the Buckeyes got a two-out RBI single to take the lead and the Huskers were unable to answer in a 2-1 loss.

OSU sophomore Travis Lakins tossed all 10 innings for the Buckeyes to improve to 2-2 on the season. Lakins limited Nebraska to only two hits and two walks on the day, while striking out seven. After giving up a home run to Jake Placzek in the bottom of the third, Lakins retired 21 straight Huskers before Ben Miller worked a one-out walk in the 10th, Lakins first walk of the game.

Nebraska’s Kyle Kubat was nearly as good on the mound, but took the loss on the afternoon. After failing to get out of the fifth inning in each of his last two starts, Kubat went a career-high 9.0 innings and took the mound in the 10th, but exited after giving up a leadoff single to Ryan Leffel. The senior lefty was tagged with both of OSU’s runs on seven hits and no walks. Kubat sat down the Buckeyes in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but NU’s offense was unable to get a run off of Lakins.

With the game tied 1-1 after nine, Leffel lead off the 10th with a single to give OSU its first baserunner since the sixth inning. Nebraska went to senior Josh Roeder out of the pen and Ronnie Dawson laid down a sacrifice bunt to put pinch-runner Jake Brobst in scoring position. Roeder then struck out Nick Sergakis and had Tre’ Gantt in a 0-2 hole, but the Buckeye DH was able to line a RBI single up the middle just past the out-stretched glove of second baseman Jake Schleppenbach to give OSU a 2-1 lead. Roeder ended the inning with a strikeout of Craig Nennig.

Lakins toed the rubber in the 10th and started the frame with a flyball off the bat of Blake Headley for the first out. Miller then worked the first walk by either team all game and the Huskers put in pinch-runner Elijah Dilday. The NU freshman swiped second base on the very next pitch of the game and the Huskers soon had the tying and winning runs on base when Tanner Lubach worked a walk. The Buckeyes stuck with Lakins and it paid off, as he struck out Austin Darby and Austin Christensen in order to end the game.

The Huskers were 4-0 in extra-inning games this season prior to Saturday and had won six straight over the Buckeyes, with the last loss coming in the second round of the 2013 Big Ten Tournament on May 23.

For the second straight day the Huskers took the game’s first lead with a run in the bottom of the third. After Lakins retired Christian Cox to start the frame, Placzek launched the first pitch he saw into the left-field berm for his first home run as a Husker. It marked the second straight game where the Huskers’ No. 9 hitter record a home run after Wes Edrington hit his first career home run in Friday’s win.

Kubat kept the Buckeyes scoreless through four inning on 34 pitches, but couldn’t keep the shutout alive through the fifth. Dawson led off the frame with a double to center field for OSU’s first extra-base hit of the series. Kubat then got back-to-back groundball outs, but Dawson advanced on both, including a RBI groundout by Gantt.

The Buckeyes nearly led off the fifth with a double to right field, but Darby threw a rope to Placzek at second base to cut down L Grant Davis.

Neither team recorded a baserunner in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings.

The Huskers and Buckeyes will wrap up their series tomorrow at Hawks Field, with first pitched scheduled for1:05 p.m. The game will be streamed on HuskersNSide.

NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Rose is getting closer to the game as he awaits a ruling on his reinstatement request.

Fox Sports said Saturday that it was hiring the career hits leader as a special guest analyst.

Rose agreed to the lifetime ban in August 1989 after a Major League Baseball investigation concluded he bet on the Reds to win while managing the team.

Shortly after new Commissioner Rob Manfred took over in January, Rose applied for reinstatement.

Phelps Fails to Qualify for 400 Free in Arizona

phelps_lochteMESA, Ariz. (AP) — Michael Phelps has failed to qualify for the 400-meter freestyle final at a meet in Arizona, finishing 17th overall.

The 18-time Olympic gold medalist finished fourth in his heat Friday with a time of 4 minutes, 2.67 seconds. That put him in the C final at night, but Phelps’ coach Bob Bowman says he won’t swim it.

Instead, Phelps will look ahead to Saturday, when he’s set to compete in the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle, two events more in keeping with his penchant for shorter races at this stage of his career.

Phelps won the 100 butterfly on Thursday in his first meet since serving a six-month suspension from USA Swimming for a second drunken driving arrest. He’s competing for the first time since last August.

Phelps didn’t swim as scheduled in the 100 backstroke preliminaries Friday.

Rockhold Hopes Win Over Machida Will Launch Him Into Contention

ufcLuke Rockhold has chewed up and choked out his last three opponents with such force that there’s seemingly only one fighter left for him to get past to finally earn a shot at the middleweight championship.

Rockhold knows if he can soundly defeat Lyoto Machida in the main event Saturday at UFC Fight Night in New Jersey, then he should be next in line for a pay-per-view title shot in the 185-pound division.

Rockhold lost his UFC debut in 2013, then rebounded with wins over Costas Philippou, Tim Boetsch, Michael Bisping and positioned himself to take on the winner of UFC 187 next month between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.

The Rockhold-Machida bout headlines strong middleweight card at the Prudential Center. Jacare Souza fights Chris Camozzi in another middleweight bout.

Cub Swanson also fights featherweight Max Holloway in a 145-pound bout. Paige VanZant fights Felice Herrig in a 115-pound fight.
