Knights claim 7th straight NCCAC crown with road win over McCook

McCook – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team overcame a slow start to defeat the McCook Community College Indians, 75-63 on Tuesday night at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Indians started off quickly and built up a 22-10 lead and led at 30-20 lead. The Knights went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 32 at the half. The Knights scored the first six points of the second half to take a 38-32 lead and did not trail for the remainder of the game. The Knights built up a 15 point lead at 68-53 for their biggest lead of the game.

The win clinched the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference title. The Knights have won or shared a portion of the NCCAC title for the past seven season.

The Knights are 14-11 overall and 5-1 in the NCCAC. They are also 7-7 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Godfrey Rolle led the Knights with 21 points. Rolle is now 27th on the Knights all-time career scoring list with 877 points. Jakub Karwowski was the only other Knight to score in double figures with 19 points. Karwowski had a double-double with 11 rebounds.

The Indians dropped to 17-11 overall, 4-2 in the NCCAC, and 5-9 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Peanut Cunningham led the Indians with 24 points and nine rebounds. Isaiah Richardson contributed 13 points.

The Knights are in action on Friday, Feb 23 when they host Eastern Wyoming College at the McDonald – Belton Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.

Lady Knights sweep McCook behind big night from Naria Hall

McCook – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights defeated the McCook Community College Lady Indians on Tuesday night, 93-88, in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game to complete the season sweep of the Lady Indians.

The Lady Knights had not swept the Lady Indians since the 2011-2012 season.

The Lady Indians jumped out to a 21-10 lead to start the game. The Lady Knights outscored the Lady Indians 12-4 the remainder of the quarter to trail the Lady Indians 25-22 at the end of the first quarter. Alyiah Foote scored 13 of the the Lady Indians 25 first quarter points.

The Lady Indians continued to hold the lead at the beginning of the second quarter, increasing their lead to 30-22 before the Lady Knights went on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 32 points each. The Lady Knights took the lead on a pair of free throws by Naria Hall at 34-32.

The teams traded leads and were tied at 40 when the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Knights 8-6 to take a 48-46 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the Lady Knights went on a 15-6 run to take a seven point lead at 61-54. The Lady Indians rallied to lead at the end of the third quarter 72-70.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights were able to tie the game at 79 each. They put the seal on the game by going on an 8-0 run to lead 87-79 and held on for the win.

In the game there were nine lead changes and 10 ties.

The Lady Knights are now 4-20 and 2-4 in the NCCAC. Hall led the Lady Knights in scoring with a career high 29 points. Three other Lady Knights scored in double figures with 16 points each by Allison Tichy, Natatabaa Nacona and Jamesia Holliman. Hall had a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.

Tichy continued to move up the all-time scoring list, passing Lesllie Stillmock and tying Courtney Widick for 20th place with 570 career points.

The Lady Indians are 6-22 overall and 2-4 in the NCCAC. Foote led the Lady Indians with 40 points. Brooke Jamison had 17 points and Sam Hinkle finished with 12 points. Foote had eight rebounds to lead the Lady Indians.

The Lady Knights are next in action on Friday, Feb 23 against Eastern Wyoming. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

Rivalry renewed as Knights visit McCook CC on Tuesday night

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights basketball teams will be travelling to play the McCook Community College Indians and Lady Indians on Tuesday, Feb 20 at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The Lady Indians are 6-21 on the season and 2-3 in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference.

The Lady Indians are led in scoring by Aliyah Foote at 14.3 points per game. Colby Cox is next in scoring at 10.4 ppg, followed by Sam Hinkle at 10.2 ppg. Gabrielle Enloe leads the Lady Indians at 7.1 rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights are 3-20 on the season and 1-4 in the NCCAC. Allison Tichy leads the Lady Knights in scoring at 13.4 ppg. The only other Lady Knight to average in double figures is Naria Hall at 12.8 ppg. Peighton Porter leads the Lady Knights in rebounding at 8.5 rebounds per game.

Tichy is 22nd on the Lady Knights all-time career scoring list at 554 points. She is 11 points away from Leslie Stillmock at number 21 and 16 points away from number 20 Courtney Widick.

The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Indians in North Platte on Jan 31, 76-74.

The men’s game, not only is a NCCAC game, but also a Region IX South Sub-Region contest.

The Indians are 17-10 overall, 4-1 in the NCCAC, and 5-8 in the South Sub-Region.

D’Von Moore leads the Indians in scoring at 15.6 ppg, followed by Chinedu Okonkwo at 13.1 ppg. Junathean Cunningham is the third Indian to average in double figures at 10.7 ppg. Okonkwo leads the Indians in rebounding at 8.7 rebounds per game.

The Knights are 13-10 overall, 4-1 in the NCCAC, and 6-7 in the South Sub-Region.

Godfrey Rolle, who is 29th on the Knights all-time career scoring list at 856 career points, leads the Knights in scoring at 19.2 ppg. Trajan Harris is averaging 11.3 ppg for second on the Knights. Jakub Karwowski leads the Knights in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Indians defeated the Knights on Jan 31 in North Platte, 76-67.

Tip-off for the women’s game is at 5:30 pm, with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 pm.

Former Bulldog Kenzi Wiseman homers in Doane debut

Former North Platte High softball standout, Kenzi Wiseman hit a solo homerun to help Doane University split a double-header against Sterling College on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Wiseman was playing in her first game since March 2016. The Southwest Minnesota State University recruit’s freshman season ended prematurely due to a intestinal virus. She then transferred to Doane and sat-out the 2017 season due to transfer requirements.

Wiseman wasted no time in her return as she homered on her second at-bat. She finished the day going 4-for-9 with a homerun, double and four runs batted in.

Knights softball finishes 1-5 on three day road trip

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights softball team finished their southern swing of six games in three days with a 1-5 record.

On Friday, the Knights were in Borger, Texas and played the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen in a doubleheader. The Lady Plainsmen swept the Knights 10-2 and 7-6.

On Saturday, the Knights and the Lady Plainsmen split the doubleheader with the Lady Plainsmen winning the first game, 7-3, and winning the second game 9-5.

On Sunday, the Knights traveled to Dodge City, Kans., and faced the Lady Conqs of Dodge City Community College in a doubleheader. The Lady Conqs defeated the Knights 10-8 in the first game and defeated the Knights in game two, 9-1.

The Knights are now 1-9 on the season.

They are next in action when they travel to Norfolk to play Northeast Community College on Saturday, Feb 24.

Knights survive in OT to beat Northeastern on the road

Sterling, CO– The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen 91-89 in overtime in a Region IX South Sub-Region contest on Saturday night.

The Knights held a 43-36 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Plainsmen outscored the Knights 46-39 to tie the score at the end of regulation at 82.

In the overtime period, the Knights outscored the Plainsmen 9-7 to secure the win.

The Knights are 13-11 overall and 6-7 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Godfrey Rolle led the Knights with 32 points. Three other Knights scored in double figures. Atem Ajang was next in scoring with 16 points, TJ Stanford added 13 points and Buom DuBuol added 10 points. Goy Lew led the Knights in rebounding with eight rebounds.

The Plainsmen, now 11-17 overall, finished Region IX South Sub-Region play at 5-11.

Marcus Burwell led the Plainsmen with 34 points and nine rebounds. Jazz Parker added 15 points. Ben Davis had 11 points and Jalen Guidry added 10 points.

The Knights are next in action when they travel to play the McCook Community College Lady Indians on Tuesday, Feb 20.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Lady Knights fall at NJC

Sterling, Colo. – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team fell to the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen Saturday night at the Bank of Colorado Events Center 83-65.

At the end of the first quarter, the Plainswomen led the Lady Knights 14-12.

In the second quarter the Plainswomen outscored the Lady Knights 25-22 to take a 39-34 lead at the half.

The Plainsmen opened the game up in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Knights 24-10 to take a 63-44 lead.

The Lady Knights are now 3-20 on the season. Naria Hall led the Lady Knights with 21 points. Nahatabaa Nacona added 16 points. Donaijia Buirst and Peighton Porter finished with five rebounds to lead the Lady Knights.

The Plainswomen, now 13-13 on the season, had three players in double figures led by Katie Diakhaby with 19 points. Megan Gerk was a point behind at 18 points and Kirsten Reginnetter had 12 points. Diakhaby had 20 rebounds to lead the Plainswomen.

The Lady Knights are next in action when they travel to play the McCook Community College Lady Indians on Tuesday, Feb 20.

Knights tough week closes with third straight home loss

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team was defeated by the Otero Junior College Rattlers, 94-82, on Saturday afternoon at the McDonald – Belton Gymnasium in Region IX South Sub-Region play.

After a three-pointer by Aaron Ridley for the Knights, the Rattlers went on a 16-5 run to take control of the game.

The Rattlers shot 58.1 percent from the field in the first half and went 7 for 14 from behind the three-point line in the first half to take a halftime lead of 50-37. The Knights shot 36.8 percent from the field and made five of 14 three pointers.

In the second half, the Knights shooting improved. They shot 51.9 percent and went 8 for 16 from the three-point range. The Rattlers continued their sharp shooting, hitting 50 percent from the field in the second half. The Rattlers shot 54.2 percent for the game.

The Knights are 9-11 on the season and 5-7 in South Sub-Region play. T.J. Stanford came off the bench and scored 20 points to lead the Knights. Three other Knights scored in double figures. Godfrey Rolle finished with 18 points, Trajan Harris added 15 points and Atem Ajang had 10 points. Stanford, Rolle, and Jakub Karwowski each had four rebounds for the Knights.

The Rattlers improve to 20-3 on the year and 9-2 in the South Sub-Region. They are currently in second place in the sub-region behind Western Nebraska Community College. The Rattlers had four players in double figures. Jarvae Robinson and Jonathan Scott each had 17 points. Chudier Bile and Josh McNair both had 13 points. Scott and Sekou Cisse each had five rebounds.

The Knights are in action next on Friday, Feb 9 when they play Central Community College in Columbus in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game.

Otero pulls away late for 61-48 win over NPCC women

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team were defeated by the Otero Junior College Lady Rattlers, Saturday afternoon, 61-48, at the McDonald – Belton Gymnasium.

The Lady Knights started out the game on a 4-0 run for the largest lead by either team in the first quarter. There were seven lead changes in the first quarter and the Lady Knights held a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Knights opened up the second quarter by scoring the first four points to make the score 18-13. The Lady Rattlers went on a 15-2 run to grab their biggest lead of the first half at 28-20. The Lady Knights cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 28-25 at the half by going on a 5-0 run.

In the first half, the Lady Knights shot 9-31 from the field for a 29 percentage compared to the Lady Rattlers, who shot 10-23, including six three pointer for a 43.5 shooting percentage.

In the third quarter, the Lady Rattlers outscored the Lady Knights 15-14. The Lady Rattlers did lead by 10 on a couple of occasions but the Lady Knights rallied to only trail by four at the quarter 43-39.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Rattlers allowed only nine points and scored 18 points to open up the game and seal the win.

The Lady Knights are 2-16 on the season. Naria Hall led the Lady Knights with 18 points. Allison Tichy was the only other Lady Knight to score in double figures with 11 points. Hall also had nine rebounds to lead the Lady Knights.

The Lady Rattlers, 9-13 on the season, were led in scoring by Alyssa Lovato with 14 points. Berklee Lerohl and Alba Vera-Ponte each had 12 points and Kalani Poloa had 10 points. Vera-Ponte and Grace O’neill each had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Rattlers.

The Lady Knights are next in action on Thursday, Feb 8 when they travel to play York College Junior Varsity. Tip-off is at 4 pm.
