Phelps Wins 100 Butterfly at 1st Meet in 8 Months

michael phelpsMESA, Ariz. (AP) — Michael Phelps has won the 100-meter butterfly at his first meet in eight months.

The 18-time Olympic gold medalist led at the halfway mark and went on to touch first in 52.38 seconds Thursday night at the Arena Pro Swim Series meet.

His time was slower than a year ago, when he finished second to longtime rival Ryan Lochte in 52.13 at the same meet after ending an abbreviated retirement. Lochte was second this time in 53.11.

Phelps is back competing after serving a six-month suspension handed down by USA Swimming after his second drunken driving arrest.

It’s his first meet since the Pan Pacific Championships in August. He was cheered on by mother Debbie and fiancee Nicole Johnson.

IOC to Launch Online Courses for Athletes, Coaches

olympicsLAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC is launching an online educational service for Olympians and other elite athletes and coaches.

The service, called “The IOC Athlete Learning Gateway,” will go live on May 28 during the International Olympic Committee’s athlete career conference in Lima, Peru.

More than 4,000 athletes and coaches from around the world have helped the IOC test and develop the pilot version of the program.

IOC President Thomas Bach says the service “will allow athletes to shape their futures while still pursuing their athletic careers.”

The launch follows a recommendation in Bach’s “Olympic Agenda 2020” program calling for support to athletes to be strengthened.

IOC athletes commission chair Claudia Bokel says the service will give athletes “access to educational material produced by leading academics and athletes.”

Maryland Wrestler Accused of Attacking Woman Gets Suspended

Big-Ten-LogoSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — A University of Maryland wrestler has been suspended after police say he attacked a woman at her Pennsylvania apartment and tried to carry her away.

Police say 20-year-old Justin Alexander, of Pittsburgh, approached the woman in the State College building early Saturday and asked her for help with something.

Police say he then assaulted and threatened her and tried to lead or carry her from the building.

Police says the woman wasn’t injured and got away when other residents saw what was going on.

The university says Alexander “has been suspended indefinitely for violating the student-athlete code of conduct.”

He was arraigned Thursday on charges including unlawful restraint, making terroristic threats and false imprisonment.

His attorney didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.

US Judge Gets 1st Chance to Vet New NCAA Head-Injury Deal

ConcussionCHICAGO (AP) — A U.S judge will soon get his first chance to scrutinize a reworked deal in a class-action, head-injury lawsuit against the NCAA.

A Friday hearing in Chicago follows Judge John Lee’s December rejection of the first proposed settlement.

The second isn’t dramatically different.

It also requires the NCAA to create a $70 million medical fund to test current and former athletes in contact and noncontact sports for brain trauma. And like the first, it would toughen return-to-play rules after a concussion.

Lee complained the first agreement was murky in places, and the new settlement seeks to provide clarity. That includes new evidence to address Lee’s concern that the $70 million for testing won’t be enough.

He may take several weeks before giving a thumbs-up or down to the new proposal.

3 in Final Frame Give Storm 2-0 Series Lead

Tri-City-StormKEARNEY, Neb. – The first Clark Cup Playoff game at the Viaero Event Center in five years did not disappoint. The Tri-City Storm scored their only three goals of the night in the third period to erase a deficit and down the Omaha Lancers 3-2, taking a 2-0 series lead in their Western Conference Semifinal Thursday night.

Storm third period goals were scored by Kevin Kerr, Mason Appleton and Dan Labosky. Labosky’s first career playoff tally put Tri-City in front for the first time all night with just 1:05 remaining in the game.

Down 2-0 entering the final frame, Kerr got his team on the board 4:30 into the period with a top-shelf shot off a rebound with assists from Nick Master and Chris Wilkie.

Tri-City got the equalizing goal after a penalty for too many men on the Lancers. Just 11 seconds into the ensuing power play, Appleton banged home a rebound off a blast from the point by Wilkie. Defenseman Bobby Nardella earned the second assist on the tying goal, which came with just 3:14 to go.

Labosky’s final goal came off a pass from Kerr, who moved down the left wing and centered the puck between the circles for the Edina, Minn. native. Forward Wade Allison picked up the second assist on the goal.

Storm goaltender Alec Dillon was credited with the win, making 17 saves. Tri-City allowed just one shot on net during the third period.

The comeback came after Omaha had scored a power play goal in each of the first two frames.

The only goal in the opening period went to Jimmy Schuldt. The defenseman knocked a puck out of the air to keep it in the offensive zone on the blue line before taking a backhand shot that got deflected past Dillon.

The Lancers added their second power play goal of the game in the middle period when Ryan Donato’s backhand found its way past Dillon with just two seconds remaining in a man-advantage opportunity.

Omaha netminder Kris Oldham stopped 34 shots for Omaha in the loss, as Tri-City outshot the Lancers 37-19 in the game.

The Western Conference Semifinal series continues on Saturday with Game 3 from Kearney at the Viaero Event Center. Game time is at 7:05 p.m.

Woman Who Accused Jameis Winston of Rape Files Lawsuit Against Him

jameis-winstonTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A former Florida State University student has filed a lawsuit against Jameis Winston accusing the NFL prospect of sexually assaulting her in 2012.

Erica Kinsman filed the lawsuit Thursday in Orange County. Winston, a former Seminoles quarterback, is projected to be a top pick in this month’s NFL draft.

John Clune, a lawyer for Kinsman, said in a statement there are consequences for Winston’s behavior “and since others have refused to hold him accountable, our client will.”

Kinsman eventually left school after the investigation against Winston was reported. Winston was not charged in 2013 and was cleared by the university following a two-day student conduct hearing.

The AP generally does not routinely identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault. However, Kinsman has told her story publicly in a documentary.
