Huskers Win 6-3, Sweep Michigan to Start Big Ten Play

husker baseballLincoln – The Nebraska baseball team (17-6, 3-0 Big Ten) extended its winning streak to 10 games and completed a series sweep of the Michigan Wolverines (11-11, 0-3 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon with a 6-3 win at Hawks Field. It was NU’s first sweep to start league play since 2008 when the Huskers took three games at Kansas State.

The Huskers outscored the Wolverines 25-7 in the series and Nebraska never trailed at any time over the three days. Nebraska posted a slight edge in hits, 30-27, but the real difference came on the mound and in the field. Nebraska’s pitching staff issued just eight walks, while the Wolverine arms gave out 20 free passes. Michigan also committed six errors, including three on Sunday, while the Huskers committed two errors on the weekend.

Sophomore Derek Burkamper improved to 3-1 on the year in the win, as he allowed one run on six hits over 5.1 innings. Colton Howell entered the game in the ninth with the tying run on deck and struck out UM No. 3 hitter Cody Bruder for the last out of the game to earn his second save of the year.

Jake Schleppenbach led the Huskers in hits with two, while Ryan Boldt and Tanner Lubach each scored a pair of runs and Ben Miller added a pair of RBIs.

After scoring five runs in the first inning in each of the first two games of the series, the Huskers again took the lead in the bottom of the first a two-out RBI single by Miller. The sophomore nearly put the Huskers ahead 2-0, but after Boldt scored on the single, Schleppenbach was cut down at the plate by UM right-fielder Carmen Benedetti to end the inning.

The Wolverines answered in the second with a run on three hits, it was the first time in the series the Wolverines had the game tied after the first inning.

After neither team scored in the third, the Huskers retook the lead, 2-1, on two out error in the bottom of the fourth. With Lubach on second following a double, Austin Darby hit a pop up to shallow left field and it looked to be a routine play, but the ball bounced out of shortstop Eric Jacobson’s glove and Lubach easily scored on the play.

Burkamper then retired the top of UM’s lineup in order in the fifth and got the first out of the sixth before junior reliever Jeff Chesnut took over. With the tying run on second base, Chesnut got a pair of groundouts to end the threat.

Michigan got a the tying run on again in the seventh when Jacobsen led off with a single and then moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Chesnut dug in and struck out UM’s No. 2 and 3 hitters to swing the momentum back in Nebraska’s favor and the offense responded

The Huskers poured in four runs in the seventh on just one hit, a double by Boldt. Benedetti issued three walks and hit a batter over 1/3 of an inning of work, before Jacob Cronenworth ended the rally.

Jake Meyers took the mound in the ninth and struck out Kendall Patrick to start the frame, but then gave up hits to three of the next four batters he faced. Holding a 6-3 lead and the tying run on deck, Howell came in and got NU’s seventh strikeout of the day to complete the sweep.

The Huskers now go back to non-conference play with five games at Hawks Field against two of college baseball’s most storied programs. Nebraska welcomes the Cal State Fullerton Titans to Hawks for a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday, before the Huskers and Texas Longhorns open a three-game series next Friday at 6:35 p.m.

Storm Sweep Bucs With 4-2 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (34-14-6) finished off a sweep of the Des Moines Buccaneers (21-19-13) with a 4-2 win at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Alec Dillon made 27 saves to earn the victory, while Tri-City got goals from Bobby Nardella, Vince Pedrie, Jake Wahlin and Cody Milan. Forward Dan Labosky added two assists in the win, and finished as the only Storm skater with a multi-point night.

Tri-City got out to a good start early and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on Nardella’s ninth goal of the season. Assisted by Kyle Eastman, Nardella free in between the circles and put the puck over Des Moines goalie Ryland Pashovitz for his second goal of the weekend.

Now with 37 points on the season, Nardella has tied the single season mark for a Storm defenseman, set by Chris Nathe during the 2002-03 season. The Notre Dame commit has also tied Nathe’s record for assists by a defenseman with 28, set in the same season.

Three straight second period goals pushed Tri-City’s lead to 4-0, giving them control of the game. First, Pedrie ripped a shot by Pashovitz’s glove at4:38, using Chase Berger as a screen in front. Both Labosky and Kevin Kerr were awarded assists on the play.

Next, Wahlin was set up in front by Mason Appleton for his 12th tally of the season at 16:32 of the middle frame. Chris Wilkie picked up the second helper for his team leading 48th point of the season.

Milan finished off the Storm scoring for the night, scoring on a one-timer from Labosky just 30 seconds after Wahlin’s goal. Milan now has 11 goals and 23 points while appearing in all 54 Storm games this season.

Des Moines made an attempt at a comeback, getting goals from Tanner Karty and Ryan Dmowski, to cut the Storm lead to 4-2 early in the third, but Tri-City was able to hold on for the victory.

Pashovitz made 23 saves for the Buccaneers in the loss. Despite being out-shot 11-3 in the first period by Tri-City, Des Moines edged the Storm 29-27 in shots on goal in the game.

The Storm sit in first place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 74 points and six games remaining in the regular season.

Tri-City continues their six-game homestand next weekend when the Fargo Force come to town for a weekend series. Friday’s game starts at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s contest begins at 7:05.

Lawsuit Could End Sports Leagues’ All-or-Nothing TV Packages

gavel-moreNEW YORK (AP) — A high-stakes federal case playing out in New York could lead to the end of pro sports’ all-or-nothing TV packages that force fans to buy hundreds of games from around the league instead of just the games of their favorite teams.

Fans of pro sports have long asked for tailored options to view live games on TV and other devices, saying league-wide packages offer more games than they can possibly watch.

Lawyers for pro baseball and hockey argued in court last week that if fans win, prices will probably go up for packages to see all the leagues’ games.

The plaintiffs say that’s not true. They say prices will likely drop as fans buy only teams they are interested in. They also said all-league packages would probably be cheaper.

Perry’s Goal Wins it for Ducks, 3-2 in OT over Avalanche

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Corey Perry scored the winner as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime on Friday night to sweep their three-game homestand.

Perry corralled the puck after Sami Vatanen knocked it out of the Ducks’ zone and raced down the ice before sending it past Semyon Varlamov 1:25 into the extra period, securing another dramatic late-game victory.

The Ducks are now 29-1-7 in games decided by one goal this season.

Frederik Andersen stopped 38 shots for the Ducks, picking up his second win in four starts since suffering a neck injury in February.

Varlamov made 37 saves, as the Avalanche’s streak of four consecutive road wins came to an end.

Berger’s OT Winner Gives Storm Spot In Playoffs

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Chase Berger’s short-handed overtime winning goal gave the Tri-City Storm (33-14-6) a 5-4 win over the Des Moines Buccaneers (21-18-13) and secured the team a berth in the 2015 Clark Cup Playoffs on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Berger’s tally was his 10th of the season, while Mason Appleton, Jake Wahlin and Kevin Kerr each had two point nights for Tri-City.

Appleton, who returned after missing three games with an injury, scored on the team’s first shot of the game. The forward deflected a shot from Chris Wilkie past Des Moines goaltender Ryan Ruck to make it 1-0 Tri-City at 1:23 of the opening period. Wahlin picked up the second assist on the goal.

After a penalty to Dan Labosky had Tri-City short-handed, Des Moines tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Ryan Dmowski.

But the Storm responded to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period on defenseman Bobby Nardella’s eighth goal of the season. The tally came with assists by defenseman Mattias Goransson and forward Kyle Eastman.

Tri-City increased their lead in the middle period on goals by Kerr and Nick Master. Kerr scored on a rush into the offensive zone with pass from Wahlin. The defenseman put a shot up high that went into the top shelf of the net to make it 3-1. Appleton was credited with the second assist on Kerr’s sixth of the season.

After a Brennan Sanford goal brought Des Moines back within a goal, Kerr sprung Master free on a breakaway and the forward made it count for his 23rd goal of the year.

Two Des Moines goals from Dmowski and Georgy Gorodetsky tied the game for the Buccaneers in the first seven minutes of the third period.

With seconds left in regulation, Kerr took a double-minor penalty for high sticking that put his team short-handed for the final 27 seconds of the game and into the overtime period.

While the Storm were killing the penalty in overtime, Berger picked up a loose puck in neutral ice and raced into the Des Moines end. The forward made a backhand pass to defenseman Vince Pedrie who had joined the rush up the ice. After an initial shot by Pedie was stopped, Berger put the rebound into the net for the game-winner.

Ruck made 39 saves in defeat for the Buccaneers, while Jared Rutledge stopped 15 shots to earn the victory for Tri-City.

The Storm remain in first place in the USHL’s Western Conference with 72 points with seven games remaining.

Tri-City and Des Moines will complete their weekend series on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center at 7:05 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Matthew Freytag, Wade Allison and Nolan Aibel…

Huskers Open Big Ten Play with 14-3 Win

husker baseballLincoln – The Nebraska baseball team (15-6, 1-0 Big Ten) opened Big Ten Conference play on Friday night at Hawks Field with a 14-3 win over the Michigan Wolverines (11-9, 0-1 Big Ten). The Huskers’ season-high 14 runs came on 13 hits and a season-high 13 walks, including 11 walks from NU’s first five batters.

Four Huskers produced a pair of his on the night, including Tanner Lubach, who reached base five times on two singles and three walks. Ryan Boldt also notched three walks and launched his first home run of the season in the third inning, a two-run opposite-field shot. Lubach and Boldt also each scored a team-high three runs.

The Huskers jumped on Michigan starter Brett Adcock in the first with five runs on four hits, as they sent 11 batters to the plate. Adcock retired Boldt to start the game, but then walked the bases loaded and Ben Miller drove in the game’s first run with a single. Adcock bounced back and got the second out of the inning on a fielder’s choice, but with the bases still loaded the Huskers delivered three-straight two-out singles from Austin Darby, Jake Meyers and Steven Reveles that drove in four more runs. Adcock then walked Boldt, his fourth walk of the inning, before getting Jake Placzek to end the inning with a fly out.

The sophomore lefty lasted a season-low 1.2 inning in the start, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and five walks.

With a 5-0 lead after the first inning, senior Chance Sinclair cruised to his third win of the season. The right hander improved to 7-0 in Big Ten starts and is now 2-0 against the Wolverines. Sinclair went 6.0 innings for the Huskers on 84 pitches, allowing one run on eight hits and no walks, while striking out four.

After the Huskers took a 14-1 lead following a three-run sixth inning, lefty relievers Nate Fisher, Miller and Max Knutson each worked an inning down the stretch.

The Huskers and Wolverines continue their series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m., with NU’s Kyle Kubat facing UM’s Ryan Nutof.

Heat Stay Hot at Home, Pull Away from Nuggets 108-91

Denver_NuggetsMIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade scored 22 points, Goran Dragic added 18 and the Miami Heat clamped down in the fourth quarter to beat the Denver Nuggets 108-91 on Friday night.

Luol Deng scored 15, Hassan Whiteside added 14 and Mario Chalmers had 10 for Miami, which won its third straight game — its longest such streak since starting 3-0.

Michael Beasley added nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Heat.

Kenneth Faried scored 20 for Denver, which got 16 apiece from Jusef Nurkic and Randy Foye.

The Nuggets missed 13 of their first 14 shots from the field in the fourth — plus their first six tries from the foul line in that quarter. Miami wasn’t much better, but even 10 points in the first 9 minutes of the final period were enough for the Heat to pull away.

The Heat have won a season-best four straight at home.
