AP Source: 49ers to Bid to Host College Football Title Game

College Football Playoff NCAASANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers will bid to host the college football playoff championship game at Levi’s Stadium.

A person with knowledge of the plans told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the team will seek to host either the 2018, ’19 or ’20 title game when they come up for bid later this year. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there has been no announcement about the plans.

Cities interested in hosting one of those three title games have until May to bid. A decision on the winners is expected in the fall.

While the semifinal games in the four-team playoff have been awarded to existing bowl games, playoff officials have opened up the championship game to all cities.

AT&T Stadium in the Dallas area hosted the first college championship game last month between Ohio State and Oregon. The next two title games have been awarded to Glendale, Arizona, and Tampa, Florida.

AP Source: Manning, Broncos Talking About Reworking Contract

Peyton-ManningENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the negotiations confirms the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning’s representatives are discussing ways to revise his contract and give the team more flexibility in free agency.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the talks.

Manning, who has made more money than any player in pro football history, is due to make another $19 million in both 2015 and ’16, and his salary cap number for next season is $21.2 million.

John Elway has traditionally been one of the more aggressive general managers in the NFL when it comes to free agency.

Nuggets’ Faried, Chandler Out with Injuries against Suns

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets are without banged-up forwards Kenneth Faried and Wilson Chandler on Wednesday night against the Phoenix Suns.

Faried is sidelined with a bruised left thumb, which he hurt in the first half Monday against Brooklyn. Chandler is missing a second straight game due to a sore left groin. Chandler said the move was precautionary and he hopes to return Friday against Utah.

The news that Faried couldn’t play caught Nuggets coach Brian Shaw a little by surprise since the high energy forward practiced the day before.

Shaw said of Faried: “It was his call and he said he wasn’t going to be able to play tonight. You can’t question that. He knows himself better than anybody else does.”

Faried is averaging 11.3 points and 8.6 rebounds this season.

Mid-Plains Community College President Ryan Purdy, Area Vice-President of Academic Affairs and North Platte Community College Jody Tomanek and MPCC Rodeo Team Coach Dustin Elliott present Aukai Kaai, MPCC student and rodeo team member, with a $1,000 scholarship Wednesday night during a MPCC Board of Governors meeting.

It was the first time money from rodeo team fundraisers was used for a scholarship – typically, it goes toward traveling and other team expenses.

“We’re hoping to do this every semester,” said Elliott. “It’s a dual excellence scholarship because the students who receive it have to excel in both the arena and the classroom. They have to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to qualify.”

Kaai competes in bull riding and team roping. He’s a native of Waimānalo, Hawaii.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Tim Miles is about to find out if his tough love gets the results he desires.

The Cornhuskers (13-14, 5-10 Big Ten) have lost five straight and seven of eight heading into Thursday night’s game at Ohio State (19-8, 8-6).

They hit bottom with a 28-point home loss to Iowa on Sunday. Miles responded by locking his players out of their posh locker room and lounge and cutting off media access to them.

Miles said the team showed “outstanding” effort in the two practices after the Iowa game.

The Huskers have scored 46 or fewer points in four of their last eight games. While going 0-7 in Big Ten road games, the Huskers are shooting 22.7 percent on 3s and averaging 51.7 points.

He says he hasn’t decided when the lockout would end.
