Manning Earns Milestone in NU Road Sweep

UNLNebraska Head Coach Mark Manning became the winningest coach in school history as the 10th-ranked Huskers (14-1, 8-1 Big Ten) finished their dual season with dominating wins over Drexel and Princeton on Saturday.

Manning’s 200th victory at Nebraska came in the Huskers’ 41-3 triumph over the Dragons at the Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa. He passed Tim Neumann, who won 199 duals at Nebraska from 1985 to 2000, for first on the school’s all-time list.

No. 11 Tim Lambert (125) opened with a technical fall before Eric Montoya notched a 3-1 decision over 15th-ranked Kevin Devoy at 133 pounds. The win marked Montoya’s third against a ranked opponent since Jan. 25. Eighth-ranked Anthony Abidin added bonus points with his pin against Andrew Mauriello in 2:20.

Following Justin Arthur’s narrow loss at 149 pounds, Nebraska dominated the rest of the way against Drexel. Third-ranked James Green (157) earned a technical fall before Austin Wilson (165) and No. 1 Robert Kokesh (174) each pinned their respective opponents. Ranked Huskers TJ Dudley (15th at 184), Aaron Studebaker (13th at 197) and Collin Jensen (17th at heavyweight) closed out the dual with wins.

NU finished the day and its dual season with a 38-6 win over the Tigers at Dillon Gymnasium in Princeton, N.J. With the victory, the 2014-15 Huskers tied the school record for fewest dual losses in a season (10-match minimum) with one. The 1952-53 team went 9-1 under Head Coach Al Partin.

Lambert opened the dual with his second technical fall of the day before the next four Huskers also tacked on bonus points. Montoya (133) won by fall and Abidin (141) notched a 10-0 major decision over Jordan Laster. With his win, Abidin earned his 14th consecutive victory and finished the dual season with a perfect 15-0 record. He holds a perfect 20-0 dual record for his career at Nebraska.

Arthur pinned Chris Perez before Green won a major decision over Rich Eva. Green’s win marked his fourth consecutive by bonus points and eighth straight overall. Kokesh won by technical fall to improve to 30-0 on the season. He finishes the dual season with a perfect 14-0 record and has won 30 consecutive dual matches overall dating back to the 2012-13 season.

Dudley picked up his 10th consecutive win since the Southern Scuffle with a 9-5 decision over Brett Harner. Jensen finished the dual with a 15-0 technical fall over Ray O’Donnell. Both of Nebraska’s losses against Princeton came by decision against ranked opponents as Wilson fell to No. 20 Jonathan Schleifer, 8-2, and Studebaker lost to 12th-ranked Abram Ayala, 3-2.

The Huskers return to action March 7-8 at the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The entire first day of the tournament as well as Session III will be streamed on BTN Plus. The final session will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network.

Huskers Take Series from BYU with 9-1 Win

husker baseballPeoria, Ariz. – The Nebraska baseball team (4-3, 0-0 Big Ten) wrapped up a 3-1 series win over the BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon with a 9-1 victory in the series finale at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Huskers had a home-field advantage on the day as nearly 2,000 Husker fans showed up to support the team even though the Huskers were playing 1,200 miles from Lincoln.

The Husker offense found its rhythm on Saturday, as the nine runs matched the nine combined runs NU scored through the first three games of the series. Nebraska also stole four bases on the afternoon after swiping just two bases through the first six games of the season.

Head Coach Darin Erstad shuffled his lineup in the finale, moving Jake Schleppenbach to the leadoff spot after Austin Darby had been there through the first six games of the season. The move paid off, as the Schleppenbach led off the first, fifth and eighth innings with singles, while scoring in both the first and fifth.

Ben Miller ended the day going 2-for-5, including his second double of the series, and a career-high five RBIs. The sophomore’s biggest hit of the day came with two outs in the sixth when he roped a three-RBI double into the left-center-field gap.

Sophomore Ryan Boldt carried the Huskers over the four game series with a 10-for-15 performance, including a triple on Saturday. The Cougars intentionally walked Boldt twice during the weekend and both times Blake Headley made them pay with a double.

The Huskers got 3.1 innings out of sophomore starter Max Knutson and then a pair of freshman relievers finished the game. Zack Engelken and Jake Meyers combined to throw 5.2 innings of shutout relief, with Engelken earning the win and Meyers picking up the save with 3.0 innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts.

Nebraska struck early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Schleppenbach scored on a single by Blake Headley and Ben Miller followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Boldt to put the Huskers ahead 2-0.

BYU cut the lead in half in the second when Colton Shaver led off with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw from Knutson. The sophomore lefty bounced back with a pair of strikeouts in the inning and kept the damage to one run.

The Huskers pushed their lead back to two runs in the third when Boldt led off the frame with a stand-up triple and scored on a single by Headley, his sixth RBI of the series.

After Engelken got out of a jam in the fifth when Boldt made a diving catch with two outs that erased an RBI single, the NU offense put another run on the board. Schleppenbach led off with his second hit of the day, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Miller.

Engelken sat down the Cougars in order in the sixth and then the Husker offense went back to work and blew the game wide open in the bottom of the inning with five runs on four hits, including three doubles. Tanner Lubach got the inning started with a double off the left-field wall for his first hit of the season after starting the year 0-for-18. Austin Darby followed with his first RBI of the season on a single that pushed NU’s lead to 5-1. Steven Reveles got a two out rally started with a RBI double and then back-to-back walks loaded the bases, setting the stage for Miller to drop a three-RBI double.

The Huskers will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for a three-game series against Loyola Marymount. The Huskers and Lions are scheduled to play at 8:05 p.m. (CT) on both Friday and Saturday night, while the finale on Sunday is scheduled for 2:05 p.m.

No. 21 Nebraska Women hold off Indiana 67-64

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballBLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Emily Cady had 22 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Natalie Romeo made four free throws in the final 29 seconds to help No. 21 Nebraska hold on for a 67-64 win over Indiana on Saturday.

Nebraska led 63-54 when Brandi Jeffery scored with 5:11 left in the game but the Cornhuskers did not score again until Romeo’s first two free throws, which pushed the score to 65-61. Larryn Brooks then knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing but Romeo responded with two more free throws at 12 seconds.

Indiana’s contested 3 from the top of the key at the buzzer did not hit the rim.

The Huskers (19-8, 9-7) were without All-Big Ten and honorable mention All-American point guard Rachel Theriot (16.5 ppg, 5.2 apg), who underwent season-ending surgery on Thursday after injuring an ankle in practice on Feb. 3.
