NIT to Experiment with Different Rules, 30-Second Shot Clock

NIT NCAAINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Teams relegated to the NIT this season will have to play under experimental rules, including a 30-second shot clock and a 4-foot restricted area under the basket.

The NCAA says it is paring 5 seconds off the shot clock to see how it impacts pace and scoring totals. The arc is moving out a foot to examine how it changes the number of collisions under the basket by expanding the area in which charges usually cannot be drawn.

Coaches who play in the tournament will be surveyed about their experience, and the men’s basketball rules committee will look at all the data to consider future rules changes.

Huskers Look for Road Win at Penn State

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska men’s basketball team looks for its first Big Ten road win of the season, as the Huskers travel to Penn State to face the Nittany Lions Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 3:05 p.m. (central) and the contest will be televised nationally on ESPNU with Clay Matvick and Sean Harrington on the call. Saturday’s game is also available online and on mobile devices on the WatchESPN app.

The game will be broadcast across the state of Nebraska on the 37-station IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, including KLIN 1400 AM in Lincoln, 1110 KFAB in Omaha and KRVN 880 AM in Lexington with Kent Pavelka calling the action and Matt Davison adding color commentary. The game can be heard for free on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as on TuneIn Radio and on SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

The Huskers (13-9, 5-5 Big Ten) bounced back from a pair of losses with one of their best performances of the year, shooting 63 percent from the floor in posting a 76-60 win over Northwestern Tuesday evening. It was Nebraska’s best shooting effort from the field in five seasons and highest shooting percentage against a conference opponent in 16 seasons.

Terran Petteway led three Huskers in double figures against Northwestern with 28 points – his 11th 20-point game of the season – seven rebounds and four assists. The 6-foot-6 junior is one of only five players in the country averaging 19.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game, as he ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring. Petteway comes intoSaturday’s game needing three points to reach 1,000 points for his Husker career.

Juniors Shavon Shields and Walter Pitchford joined Petteway in double figures on Tuesday, combining for 25 points. Shields, who reached the 1,000-point mark against Northwestern, had 11 points and a career-high eight assists, while Pitchford had 14 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, as his outburst was his highest point total since November.

With a 5-5 mark, the Huskers are in the middle of a jumbled pack, as only two games separate second through 10th place in the conference standings entering this weekend’s action.

Penn State is 14-9 on the season and 2-8 in the Big Ten following a 64-58 loss at Maryland on Wednesday. In that game, D.J. Newbill led the Nittany Lions with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The fifth-year senior leads the Big Ten in scoring at 21.3 points per game. PSU has been in close games in Big Ten play, as five of their eight losses are by six points or less.

Mrazek Stops 28 Shots as Red Wings beat Avalanche, 3-0

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Petr Mrazek kept the surging Detroit Red Wings near the top of the Eastern Conference with another stellar performance.

Mrazek had 28 saves for his first shutout of the season to lead Detroit to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.

Justin Abdelkader put the Red Wings on the scoreboard in the second period, and Darren Helm and Luke Glendening added empty-net goals in the last 3 minutes. Detroit improved to 8-1-0 in its last nine games and pulled two points behind Tampa Bay for tops in both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference.

Mrazek has filled in nicely for veteran Jimmy Howard, who has missed 12 games with a groin injury. Mrazek is 8-2 in relief of Howard, topped off by Thursday’s game.

“Tonight’s a big night for him,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “The guy at the other end is a star, he’s a heck of a goalie. For a kid, it was good for him.”

Semyon Varlamov had 25 saves for Colorado, which dropped to 3-1-1 in its last five. The Avalanche were 0 for 3 on the power play and have not scored in their last 22 chances over the last four games. They are also just 3 for 43 over their last eight games with the man advantage.

“We had some chances we have to take advantage of and we didn’t,” Alex Tanguay said. “They took care of their power play and we didn’t take care of our power plays. Very frustrating.”

Detroit came in with the league’s best power play and showed why in its first opportunity. With Colorado’s Jan Hejda off for interference, Henrik Zetterberg fed Abdelkader in front of the net, and he put in his own rebound at 6:35 of the second period.

“Varlamov, he really takes away a lot of the net,” Abdelkader said. “But the puck kind of laid down there in front and got that rebound, and through the legs. It’s not always the first chance, but sometimes the second and third, especially against good goalies.”

Colorado sent three of its past four games into overtime by pulling Varlamov for an extra skater in the final minutes but couldn’t keep the momentum going against Detroit. Helm scored with 2:29 remaining and Glendening sealed it with 15 seconds left.

“It was a tough last three minutes,” Mrazek said. “They had a 6-on-5 and they were in our zone a lot, but I don’t think they had many shots. Guy there blocked three or four (shots) and we scored two goals, so it was great.”

The Avalanche, sitting ninth in the Western Conference, missed an opportunity to gain ground on eighth-place Vancouver, which lost 5-1 to San Jose.

“Those are points we needed bad,” Tanguay said. “We just have to refocus and get ready for a big weekend.”

Colorado appeared to take a 1-0 lead just 6:09 into the game but Gabriel Landeskog’s goal was disallowed on a hand pass.

“It always feels good when they say no goal after they score,” Mrazek said. “I dont know what happened there. I just saw another play after he touched it with his hand, so probably a good call.”

The Avalanche outshot Detroit 12-5 in the first and controlled the play for most of the period.

NOTES: Red Wings C Pavel Datsyuk notched his 555th career assist. He moves into fourth place on the franchise list. … Avalanche D Tyson Barrie was scratched due to a hip flexor injury. … Detroit recalled D Xavier Ouellet and G Jonas Gustavsson from Grand Rapids of the AHL and assigned G Tom McCollum to Grand Rapids. … Howard skated with the team Wednesday and could return as early as next week.

Rece Davis Taking over as Host of ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Rece Davis is taking over as host of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” with Chris Fowler focusing on calling the Saturday prime-time games.

Davis has signed a contract extension through 2021, the network said Thursday.

“I’ve cared deeply about college football my entire life,” Davis said in a release from ESPN. “As a result, I’m humbled and grateful to join the brilliant men and women who have built GameDay into the sport’s defining show.”

Fowler had hosted “GameDay” since 1990. Last season, he became ESPN’s lead play-by-play announcer for college football, replacing Brent Musburger.

That meant sometimes hosting “GameDay” in one location in the morning and traveling to another site for ABC’s “Saturday Night Football.” Analyst Kirk Herbstreit does the same, but the double duty is more challenging for a play-by-play announcer because of the extra preparation involved.

Still, Fowler initially said he wanted to continue with both roles, as he did in 2014. Thursday’s announcement allows ESPN to keep Davis and give him a broader role, with Fowler still in a prominent position.

“It was important to me that GameDay be left in excellent hands,” Fowler said in the release. “It certainly will be with someone as talented and dedicated as Rece Davis.”

Davis, who joined the network in 1995, will no longer call Thursday night games.

“This agreement reflects our belief that Rece Davis is one of the very best in the industry,” said John Wildhack, ESPN’s executive vice president for programming and production.

Her layup made it 38-28 with 9:22 left. Nebraska cut it to 44-41 with 31.8 left on a free throw by Tear’a Laudermill.

Laney hit two free throws two seconds later to make it a five-point game and Nebraska couldn’t close the gap.
