Knights split games at LCCC Classic

Cheyenne, Wyo – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated Rexburg United 96-64 in the opening game of the Laramie County Community College Classic on Friday night.

The Knights led at halftime, 38-34. They outscored Rexburg 58-30 in the second half to secure the victory.

Cody Spjute had 21 points and Craid Spjute had 19 points to lead Rexburg. Keaton Small was the only other player for Rexburg to score in double figures with 10 points. Jake Cochran led Rexburg in rebounding with eight rebounds.

The Knights had four players in double figures led by Godfrey Rolle, who led all scorers with 24 points. Next in the scoring column was Abdou Gueye, who had 22 points. Trajan Harris had 12 points and Goy Lew had 11 points. Jakob Karwowski had eight rebounds and three blocks to lead the Knights.

On Saturday, the Knights lost 83-77 to Northern Colorado P2P Elite.

Godfrey Rolle led the Knights in scoring with 33 points. Trajan Harris was next with 14 points. Buom Dubuol was the only other Knight to finish in double figures with 10 points. Dubuol also had 10 rebounds to lead the Knights.

Dwight Smith led the Elite with 20 points, followed by Jase Hamstad and Will Bell with 14. Junior Rivera added 11 points for the Elite. Smith and Greg Vente each had nine rebounds for the Elite.

The Knights are 1-2 on the season. They will travel to Goodland, Kan, on Tuesday to play the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks.

North Platte High’s Gabby Menghini signs with NPCC volleyball

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team has announced the signing of Gabby Menghini to the 2018 class.

Menghini, who was an outside hitter for the North Platte High School Bulldogs finished her senior season with 226 kills, 244 defensive digs, 42 service aces, and 48 total blocks.

Menghini is the second recruit for Alexa McCall and the Lady Knights for 2018. The other being Sydney Mullin from Maxwell High School.

Menghini is the daughter of Trevor and Tammy Menghini. Tammy, Gabby’s mom played for the Lady Knights during the 1981 and 1982 seasons.

HIGHLIGHTS: Nacona sets school record with 12 steals in Lady Knights 75-52 loss to Northeast

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights were defeated by the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks, 75-52 on Friday night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Lady Knights jumped out to a 4-3 lead, but the Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Knights 17-6 in the remainder of the first quarter to take a 10 point lead of 20-10.

In the second quarter, with some tough defensive play, the Lady Knights were able to pull within one point at 29-28. The Lady Hawks went on a 10-2 run during the last two minutes of the half to take a 39-30 halftime lead. Nahatabaa Nacona had eight first half steals to lead the defensive charge for the Lady Knights.

The Lady Hawks stretched out their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Knights 21-6 to take a 60-36 lead at the end of three quarters.

The Lady Knights was able to bring the difference within 20 at 47-67 midway through the fourth quarter, could not get any closer.

The Lady Hawks, 7-0 on the season had a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring in double figures led by Irene Sanz with 14 points. Lauren Hunstad and Judit Valls each scored 12 points, and the Lady Hawks season leading scorer, Mykala Baylor, finished with 10 points. Baylor led the Lady Hawks with eight rebounds.

The Lady Knights, now 1-4 on the season, had two players finish with double-doubles. Peighton Porter finished the game with 12 points and had 12 rebounds, which led the Lady Knights in both categories. Nacona finished with 11 points and completed a double-double with a school record 12 steals in the game.

The Lady Knights are next in action on Tuesday, Nov. 21 when they travel to Goodland, Kansas to play the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks.

Bernie Madison retiring from position as head football coach at North Platte High School

Bernie Madison shared with players that he will be retiring from Head Football Coach effective at the end of the 2017 season on Thursday, November 2nd. Coach Madison has been a head football coach for Kearney Catholic and North Platte Public Schools. In his resignation letter, Coach Madison was thankful for all the great opportunities given to him as Head Coach at North Platte HS. He stated he enjoyed working with and learning from colleagues for the past nine years and is ready to move on to the next phase of his life.

Coach Madison will remain a physical education teacher for NPHS and supporter of the football program through this transition.

Principal James Ayres commented about Coach Madison – “Coach Madison’s ability to build and form relationships with his players and students was evident the first day he was at North Platte High School. He is always out greeting students and patrons who come to the school. His enthusiastic and down to earth approach makes it easy for him to build these relationships.”

Activities Director Marc Mroczek noted, “I would like to thank Bernie for all his hard work and dedication to the Bulldog football program the past nine years. I wish him all the best in the future.”

North Platte High School Activities Director, Marc Mroczek, will be working with administration to post the position and hire a new Head Coach for the 2018 season.

Lady Knights defeat Iowa Lakes 87-78 for first win of season

Norfolk – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team won their first game of the season with an 87-78 victory over the Iowa Lakes Community College Lady Lakers on Saturday afternoon.

A big second quarter propelled the Lady Knights to the win, outscoring the Lady Lakers 21-14. The Lady Knights trailed the Lady Lakers 17-16 after one quarter, but led at halftime 37-31.

In the third quarter, the Lady Knights expanded their lead to nine points 60-51 after outscoring the Lady Lakers 23-20.

In the fourth quarter, each team scored 27 points to keep the difference at nine to give the Lady Knights the win.

Allison Tichy, a sophomore from Bellevue led the Lady Knights with a career high 32 points. Tichy went 12 of 23 from the floor including five three-pointers. She also went 3 for 3 from the charity stripe. Her previous career high was 19 points.

Yasmyn Spivey was next in the scoring column with 18 points and Peighton Porter finished with 10 points for the Lady Knights. Porter also grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lady Knights. Jameisia Holliman handed out six assists.

For the Lady Lakers, who are now 1-2 on the season, were led in scoring by Mia Wassink, who led all scorers, with 37 points. Lemia Ntor-Ue was the only other Lady Laker to score in double figures with 11 points. Wassink had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
The Lady Knights, now 1-3, are next in action on Friday, Nov. 17 when they host the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks.

No. 15 Des Moines Area runs past Lady Knights 87-66 at Hawks Classic

Norfolk – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights were defeated by the National Junior College Athletic Association pre-season 15th ranked Des Moines Area Community College Lady Bears 87-66.

The Lady Knights started out the game, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. The Lady Bears got going and went on a 16-0 run to lead 19-7. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears held a 28-14 lead.

The Lady Knights stayed close in the second quarter, being outscored 18-15 to trail 46-29 at the half.

The Lady Bears scored 18 more points in the third quarter and held the Lady Knights to 12 to increase their lead to 64- 41 at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Knights did outscore the Lady Bears in the fourth quarter 25-23 to cut into the Lady Bear lead.

Allison Tichy led the Lady Knights in scoring with 13 points. Naria Hall and Yasmyn Spivey each had 12 points and Peighton Porter finished with 10 points. Lexa Lealiiee had 10 rebounds for the Lady Knights.

The Lady Bears, now 4-0 on the season, had five players in double figures led by Molly Mitchell with 19 points. Beth Atwood was next in scoring with 17 points. Regan Shockley finished with 14 points. Aliyah Robinson and Deja Davis each contributed 10 points. Mitchell and Atwood completed the double-double by each grabbing 11 rebounds for the Lady Bears.

The Lady Knights are 0-3 on the season. They will play Iowa Lakes Community College at noon on Saturday in the second day of the classic. Iowa Lakes, 1-1, lost to host Northeast Community College 95- 63 in the second game.

Lady Knights basketball drops home opener against Air Force Prep

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team dropped their home opener on Thursday to the Air Force Prep Lady Huskies 69-49 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Lady Huskies jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held a 22-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Huskies increased their lead in the second quarter with the score being 35-15 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter the Lady Huskies outscored the Lady Knights 15-11 to take a 50-26 lead.

The Lady Knights outscored the Lady Huskies 23-19 in the fourth quarter to close the final gap to 20 points.

Naria Hall was the only Lady Knight in double digits with 15 points. Yasmyn Spivey added nine points and led the Lady Knights in rebounding with six.

Natalie Nicks led the Lady Huskies with 26 points. Two other Lady Huskies scored in double figures: Cierra Winters added 16 points and MaKenna Izzi tallied 10 points. Winters, Jasmine Sanders, and Coco Kuchins each had nine rebounds to lead the Lady Huskies.

The Lady Knights are now 0-2 on the season. They will travel to Norfolk this weekend to play in the Hawks Classic. They will play Des Moines Area Community College tomorrow and Iowa Lakes Community College on Saturday.
