Huskers Work through Finals Week

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.-The Nebraska football team practiced for one hour inside the Hawks Championship Center on Friday in preparation for its Dec. 27 bowl game against the University of Southern California. Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis as well as several defensive players spoke with the media following practice.

According to Papuchis, the Huskers have had a good couple weeks of practice, and mentioned that he believes the team is excited to travel to San Diego and play a talented USC team.

“They are obviously a talented ball club, they have good skill in all their offensive spots, great running back, great quarterback,” Papuchis said. “We are going to have (a) challenge ahead of us but we have had a good couple weeks of practice and I think our guys are excited about going out there and playing.”

The Trojans boast a prolific quarterback to wide receiver combination in junior quarterback Cody Kessler and junior receiver Nelson Agholor. Kessler ranks consistently in the top three in all major quarterback statistics in the Pac 12 this season, as he has thrown for 3505 yards accounting for 36 touchdown and only four interceptions. Agholor has been the Trojans main deep threat, as he has caught 97 receptions for 1223 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Papuchis believes that the Blackshirts will be up for the challenge to try and shut down the high powered USC offense.

“I think our guys are looking forward to that just from the perspective that I think our guys are comfortable in our nickel stuff, I think they look forward to the challenge,” Papuchis said. “I think we have the no.1 defense in terms of opponent completion percentage and I think they have the no.1 offense in terms of offensive completion.”

Sophomore safety Nate Gerry was also impressed with how the team has practiced in the last few weeks, as he noted, the team really wants to end the season on a high note in San Diego.

“I think we had a pretty good week of practice, a lot of high energy throughout the week,” Gerry said. “I think a lot of people are focused on beating USC, you know that is one thing we really want to do—end the year on a good note.”

Gerry added, “Especially with finals being done, we now have all next week to put all we got into USC.”

“It’s tough, you have to use your time management skills wisely, sometimes you have to put away one or the other and just focus all you got on one thing, then you switch real quick and start doing the other thing,” Gerry said. “It is tough, I am just glad they are over with.”

Sophomore defensive tackle Maliek Collins agreed with Gerry that going through finals week and practice is tough work, but jokingly, Collins mentioned that is why he gets his school work out of the way early on in the school year.

“I mean it is hard, but I try to take care of my business in the beginning or early on in the semester so I don’t have as much pressure during finals week, and whether or not passed or not. I just try and take care of that stuff early on, then finals week can be a breeze.”

The Nebraska football team will be back on the practice field Monday afternoon in preparation for their Dec. 27 Holiday Bowl matchup against the USC Trojans. Kickoff between the Huskers and Trojans will be at 7 p.m., and the game can be seen on ESPN.

Chiefs’ Bowe Questionable for Steelers with Flu

Dwayne Bowe

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe missed his third straight day of practice with the flu Friday and is questionable for Sunday’s pivotal game at Pittsburgh.

The Chiefs (8-6) would not be eliminated from the playoff race with a loss to the Steelers, but they would need a lot of help. Kansas City plays San Diego in the final week of the season.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday he thinks Bowe will be able to play. If he’s unable to go, Frankie Hammond Jr. and Jason Avant will likely be called upon to cover Bowe’s production.

Linebacker Tamba Hali also did not practice Friday, though Reid said that was mostly to rest his sore knee. Reid expects Hali to be available for the game.

Royals Sign Rios to $11 Million, 1-Year Deal

Alex Rios

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals announced the signing of veteran outfielder Alex Rios to an $11 million, one-year deal Friday that includes a mutual option for the 2016 season.

Rios, who will take over right field for departed free agent Nori Aoki, will make $9.5 million this season. The deal includes $12.5 million the following year with a $1.5 million buyout.

The 33-year-old Rios should provide more pop to a lineup that lacked home-run hitters last season. He’s part of an offseason spending spree by the AL champs that includes the signing of Kendrys Morales to a $17 million, two-year deal to become their designated hitter.

Rios hit .280 with four homers and 54 RBIs for Texas last season.

The Royals have also signed pitcher Kris Medlen, who is coming off Tommy John surgery, and agreed to terms with pitcher Edinson Volquez.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have acquired second baseman Johnny Giavotella from the Kansas City Royals for minor league pitcher Brian Broderick.

The clubs announced the deal Friday.

Giavotella was designated for assignment by the Royals on Thursday after spending most of last season at Triple-A Omaha. He has played parts of four big league seasons in Kansas City, batting .238 in 125 career games.

The Angels need a second baseman after trading Howie Kendrick to the Dodgers. They are still attempting to re-sign infielder Gordon Beckham.

Broderick was signed by the Angels earlier in the offseason. He pitched in the independent Atlantic League last season.

Selig to Become Baseball Commissioner Emeritus Next Month

Bud Selig MLBNEW YORK (AP) — Bud Selig will be given the title of baseball commissioner emeritus when he retires next month.

The 80-year-old Selig has led baseball for 22 1/2 years. He will be succeeded by Rob Manfred, baseball’s chief operating officer, on Jan. 25.

Selig helped force commissioner Fay Vincent’s resignation in 1992 and was put in charge as chairman of the executive council. He was elected commissioner in July 1998, and his time in charge is second only to that of Kenesaw Mountain Landis from 1920-44.

MLB said Friday that Selig will be available to advise Manfred and assist with special projects. Manfred says “this role will allow the game to benefit from his unmatched institutional knowledge, experience and relationships.”

Sinclair Named Preseason All-American

Chance Sinclair

Lincoln – Nebraska senior pitcher Chance Sinclair was named a third-team Louisville Slugger Preseason All-American on Friday morning, announced by Collegiate Baseball. The Osawatomie, Kan., native was named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball following the 2014 season, becoming the first Husker pitcher since Johnny Dorn in 2008 to earn All-America honors.

Tabbed as a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection last season, Sinclair led the Huskers with a 9-1 record and a 2.15 ERA in 100.2 innings over 16 starts. On the year, Sinclair went 6.0 or more innings in 13 of his 16 starts, including nine outings of at least 7.0 innings or more and a 9.0-inning complete game against Ohio State on April 5. During Big Ten play, Sinclair was a perfect 6-0 in eight starts with a 2.10 ERA, including a 10-strikeout performance in his final home start of the year against Illinois on May 15. It was the most strikeouts in a conference game by a Husker since Thad Weber sat down 11 against Kansas in 2008.

At the 2014 Stillwater Regional, Sinclair started NU’s first NCAA Tournament game since 2008 and took a no hitter into the seventh inning against Cal State Fullerton. On the afternoon, Sinclair retired the first 14 Titan batters he faced before he issuing a two-out walk in the fifth, but didn’t factor into the decision.

Sinclair joined the Huskers last season following two seasons at Neosho County CC where he set multiple school records.

The Huskers open the 2015 season on Friday, Feb. 13, in Las Vegas, Nev., when they open a three-game series against the UNLV Rebels.

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — A 5-year-old Ohio boy hoping to save the football program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has donated his entire allowance, sending a $1 bill with a handwritten note of support.

His parents tell The Columbus Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1wSMWwD ) that Bennett Williams of Dublin, Ohio, decided he liked UAB after seeing its dragon logo. He was disappointed to learn UAB is eliminating football.

His letter to UAB said: “I love Ohio State, but I think you should have football too. Here is one dollar to help!”

An assistant athletic director told Bennett’s family his kindness touched the beleaguered athletics staff, which is framing the letter and the dollar.

The Blazers sent back a football and other gear. Bennett was most excited about the accompanying letter calling him their top fan.

Comeau leads Penguins over Avalanche 1-0 in OT

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoPITTSBURGH (AP) — Blake Comeau scored with 2:36 left in overtime to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Colorado Avalanche 1-0 on Thursday night.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots, registering his sixth shutout of the season just hours after the Penguins thought their starting goaltender had the mumps.

Fleury, who recorded the 34th shutout of his career, was tested after missing Wednesday’s practice with an illness, but the results came back negative and he was cleared for Thursday’s game.

Sidney Crosby also returned Thursday after missing three games with the mumps, as the Penguins managed three wins and five of a possible six points without their captain. They now have six wins in their last nine games.

Comeau’s goal was his 11th of the season. He tapped the game-winner past Avalanche goaltender Calvin Pickard after Evgeni Malkin deflected Rob Scuderi’s shot from the point in front.
