Husker Wrestling Stunned by Badgers, 23-14

UNLLincoln, Neb. – No. 8 Nebraska (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday night as the Huskers fell to Wisconsin, 23-14, at the Devaney Center.

No. 1 Robert Kokesh got NU started on the right track with his 16-5 major decision over Frank Cousins in the opening bout at 174 pounds. The senior All-American raced out to a 9-1 lead after the first period and never looked back before adding a point for riding time. Kokesh, who ascended to the top spot at 174 pounds in every major poll this week, improves to 15-0 on the season.

Ranked Huskers Tim Lambert (No. 18 at 125), Anthony Abidin (No. 20 at 141) and James Green (No. 2 at 157) also posted victories for the Huskers. Lambert shutout Johnny Jimenez in the fifth match of the night, scoring a takedown in the first period before a reversal from the bottom position in the second period. He tacked on a riding time point in his 5-0 decision.

Abidin took an early lead against Jesse Thielke before a dominant third period gave the Husker junior an 11-2 major decision. Abidin earned three takedowns in the match and added a point for riding time.

Green, a three-time All-American, collected three takedowns in the first period against Jarod Donar and built a 9-3 lead midway through the second stanza before holding off the pesky Badger for a 9-7 win. Green is 13-1 on the season and holds a 5-0 record in duals.

Following Kokesh’s win in the opening match, Nebraska’s TJ Dudley (184), Aaron Studebaker (197) and Collin Jensen (HWT) each lost as the Badgers gained a 10-4 advantage. Eric Montoya fell to No. 18 Ryan Taylor at 133 pounds, while No. 19 Justin Arthur dropped an 8-7 decision to Rylan Lubeck at 149 pounds and Austin Wilson (165) was pinned by No. 7 Isaac Jordan in the final match of the dual.

The Huskers return to action Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. More event information will be available on Huskers.com closer to the tournament.

Broncos Activate Trevathan, put Ball on IR

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have activated linebacker Danny Trevathan from injured reserve and promoted tight end Dominique Jones from their practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The Broncos also placed running back Montee Ball and safety Quinton Carter on season-ending injured reserve.

Trevathan was the Broncos’ leading tackler last season. He has played just two games this year because of two separate fractures in his left leg, one in August and one in October.

Ball played in five games, running for a paltry 172 yards on 55 carries for a 3.1-yard average. He underwent an appendectomy in training camp and tore his right groin against Arizona on Sept. 21. He returned at St. Louis on Nov. 16 but aggravated the injury after a handful of snaps.

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota Wins Heisman Trophy

Heisman TrophyNEW YORK (AP) — Marcus Mariota has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Oregon player to earn college football’s top individual honor.

A pinpoint passer with wide-receiver speed, Mariota came into his junior the season as the favorite to win the Heisman and delivered a performance that turned the presentation ceremony into a foregone conclusion.

The first Hawaii native to win the Heisman has accounted for a Pac-12-record 53 touchdowns (38 passing, 14 rushing and one receiving) while directing the Ducks’ warp-speed spread offense, and leading Oregon to a spot in the first College Football Playoff.

It will be a matchup of Heisman-winning quarterbacks in the Rose Bowl semifinal Jan. 1 with Mariota and the second-seeded Ducks facing Florida State and Jameis Winston.

Storm Hang On To Sweep Youngstown In Shootout

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Unable to hold a two-goal lead in the third, the Tri-City Storm (13-7-3) needed a shootout to complete a 3-2 win and sweep the Youngstown Phantoms (12-7-5), on Saturday afternoon at the Viaero Event Center.

Storm goals were scored by defenseman Kevin Kerr and forward Jake Wahlin, while Dan Labosky and Mason Appleton converted in the shootout.

Tri-City netminder Jared Rutledge made 31 saves and stopped 3-of-4 in the shootout to record a victory in his first game with the Storm.

Neither team was able to score in the opening frame, but Tri-City outshot the Phantoms 13-8 through the first 20 minutes.

The Storm finally broke through in the final two minutes of the second, when forward Wade Allison found Kerr who joined the rush and beat Youngstown goaltender Chris Birdsall.

The goal unleashed the Teddy Bear Toss at the Viaero Event Center and brought a crowd of 3,425 to life.

19 seconds later, Tri-City made it 2-0 when Wahlin banked a rebound off Birdsall into the net. Cody Milan brought the puck into the Youngstown end but fanned on a shot attempt. The puck bounced off the endboards right to Wahlin, who scored his third goal of the season.

In the third, Youngstown was able to tie the game and force overtime, getting goals from defenseman Matt Miller and forward Josh Melnick.

Without a winner in the extra five minute period, the teams went to a shootout.

Maxim Letunov scored for Youngstown in the first round to give the Phantoms the early lead in the skill session. After missed attempts by Wilkie and Milan, Labosky scored in the third round on a do-or-die attempt to force a fourth round.

Rutledge stopped Kiefer Sherwood in the fourth, giving Appleton the opening to seal a win for the Storm.

Tri-City has now won four consecutive games and has 29 points, sitting in second in the USHL’s Western Conference. The Storm have also won four straight against Youngstown, and have a record of 4-2 in the shootout during the 2014-15 season.

Just one game remains on the schedule before the league’s holiday break. Tri-City will be in Omaha to face the Lancers on Friday night at 7:35 p.m.

The Storm return to the Viaero Event Center on Dec. 27 to face Sioux City at 3:05 p.m.

White Edges Red in Annual Intrasquad Meet, McGuire Wins 3200

UNLLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska track and field team competed in the annual Intrasquad meet on Saturday at the Devaney Center Indoor Track. The White team earned the narrow victory over the Red team by a 156-137 margin. During competition, both teams took down five meet records.
Sophomore Kadecia Baird broke the first Intrasquad meet record Saturday, as she won the women’s 200 meter dash in a time of 23.69, breaking the previous meet record that she set last season (23.85).
Shortly after Baird set her record mark, senior Ricco Hall broke the meet record in the men’s 200 meter dash for the Red team, as Hall posted a blazing time of 21.11. Hall’s mark broke the previous record set by former Husker sprinter Dexter McKenzie last season (21.16).
Slovenia native Marusa Cernjul also broke a meet record, as the senior broke the women’s high jump mark, jumping 6’2”. The previous record holder was Carrie Braness in the 1999 season.
Senior London Hawk started off the Intrasquad meet with an excellent performance in the 600 meter run for the White team. Hawk ran a 1:18.08 in the race, placing first and just missing out on beating the overall meet record of 1:18.05 that he set last season.
High jumper James White made a valiant return for the Huskers in his senior campaign, after sitting out all of last season due to injury. White won the men’s high jump for the white team, jumping a remarkable 6’11”.
True freshman Landon Bartels of Ashland, Mo., also made a splash at high jump, as the newcomer recorded a high jump of 6’11” as well, but finished behind White due to jump attempts.
Junior Grandview, Mo., native Oladapo Akinmoladun performed well for the Nebraska men, as Akinmoladun won the men’s 60 meter hurdles race with a time of 8.11. Akinmoladun came out blazing in the prelims of the 60 meter hurdles, as he recorded a time of 7.99, just off of the meet record he set in his freshman campaign (7.80).
True freshman and Lincoln North Star product Moujtaba Mohammed ran well in his first race as a Husker, as Mohammed won the men’s 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:29.88, just two seconds off of the meet record (2:27.27). Senior captain Shawnice Williams took home the crown in the women’s 1,000 meter race for the White team, running a time of 2:58.64.
The final two meet records that were broken happened in the final two races of the competition, as both the men’s and women’s 4×400 meter relay teams broke previous meet records.
The meet also offered the opportunity for young Husker fans to get out onto the same track that the Huskers run on, and they were able to run in both the Little Husker 100-meter and 60-meter dashes.
Former North Platte Bulldog and freshman Wyatt McGuire helped the White team earn the win by placing first in the 32oo Meter run. McGuire posted a time of 9:15.29 to edge out Peter Spinks, who ran a 9:16.73 for the Red team.
The Huskers will now continue to prepare for the start of the 2015 track and field season, as they are set to open at home on Friday, Jan. 16 with the two-day Holiday Inn Invitational. Master’s Hat Trick Gives Storm 5-3 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm’s first line of Nick Master, Dan Labosky and Chris Wilkie combined for 10 points and were the difference on Friday night in a 5-3 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms at the Viaero Event Center.

Master led the way with a hat trick, while Labosky had a goal and assists on all of Master’s tallies. Wilkie had a goal in the second period, as well as two assists.

Tri-City didn’t take long to strike and Master gave his team a 1-0 lead with his first tally of the evening at 1:15. Wilkie got the puck to the center in front of the net and the Broomall, Penn. native was in the perfect spot, allowing the puck to bounce into the net off his skate. Labosky picked up the second assist on the goal.

Less than a minute later however, the Phantoms tied the game on Maxim Letunov’s 12th goal of the year from Kiefer Sherwood.

Youngstown took a lead at 7:24 of the opening period when Sherwood scored his first of the night to make it 2-1.

In the middle period, Tri-City scored twice in just over four minutes to retake the lead. First, while killing a penalty to Joel Herbert, Labosky found the back of the net for the first time this season in his third game back with the team. Conner Valesano moved the puck up ice and created the chance before Labosky hustled to the rebound and beat Youngstown goaltender Chris Birdsall.

Then, just over two minutes later, Wilkie deflected a Mason Appleton shot past Birdsall for his 13th goal of the year. Defenseman Kevin Kerr was given the third assist on the tally that gave Tri-City a 3-2 lead.

Sherwood re-tied the game at 6:02 of the period with his second goal of the night and the game entered the third period tied at 3-3.

On his first shift of the final period, Master scored twice to complete the hat trick, giving Tri-City the first two-goal advantage of the night.

Labosky had the first assist on both goals, setting Master up in front of the net to earn his second and third assists on the night.

The hat trick is the 23rd in Tri-City Storm history, and the first since forward Joel L’Esperance scored three against Youngstown a year ago on Dec. 13, 2013.

Tri-City outshot Youngstown 31-21 in the game. Storm netminder Alec Dillon made 18 saves to earn the win.
