KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is dedicating Sunday night’s game against Denver to two teenagers who drowned in a Missouri farm pond over the weekend.

Charles met one of the boys, Andre Lance, a few years ago at training camp and remembered taking a photo with him. The 17-year-old Lance and his high school classmate, Tyler Brandt, were found in the ice-covered farm pond Sunday night near Savannah in northwest Missouri.

Charles said that he learned of the drowning through social media.

The Chiefs were already playing with heavy hearts after learning safety Eric Berry has a mass in his chest that could be lymphoma. Berry was still undergoing tests Wednesday but will miss the remainder of the season.

Briere’s OT Goal Lifts Avalanche over Coyotes

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoGLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Daniel Briere scored 3:16 into overtime, and the Colorado Avalanche completed a comeback from three goals down to beat the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 on Tuesday night.

Briere got help from the Coyotes’ Martin Hanzal, who backhanded Briere’s pass past his own goalie, Mike Smith.

Colorado (8-9-5) won for the fourth time in five games after a goalie change in the first period. Arizona (9-11-3) absorbed another late-game home loss.

The Avalanche tied it 3-3 when Matt Duchene’s pass from behind the net went off the stick of Coyotes forward Lauri Korpikoski and squeezed past Smith at 4:05 of the third period.

Arizona had everything going its way early. A three-goal barrage in the first 11 minutes put the Coyotes ahead big. But the Avalanche rallied behind left wing Gabriel Landeskog and substitute goalie Calvin Pickard, who finished with 25 saves and no goals allowed.

Arron Afflalo added 19 points and Danilo Gallinari had 15 for the Nuggets, who defeated the Bulls for the eighth straight time in Denver.

Bulls point guard Derrick Rose was limited to 10 minutes in his second game back from a left hamstring strain. Rose, who scored 18 points in his return Monday night against Utah after a four-game absence, felt tightness in the hamstring during the first quarter and didn’t play the rest of the way.

Jimmy Butler had 32 points for Chicago.

NU Looking to Bounce Back at Iowa

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team continued preparations for its Big Ten West showdown with the Iowa Hawkeyes on Tuesdayafternoon, as the Huskers practiced for nearly two hours inside of the Hawks Championship Center and outside on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields.

Offensive Coordinator Tim Beck spoke with the media following practice, as he mentioned that true freshman wide receiver Demornae Pierson-El is responding well after Saturday’s game versus Minnesota. Beck mentioned that Pierson-El will make plenty of more big plays in his career as a Husker.

“He has got a lot of resiliency and I think he will bounce back ok. He is a young guy trying to make plays out there, I appreciate his effort—he plays hard. He made some real big plays, has made some plays and will continue to make big plays for us all year. He has got to keep grinding.”

Beck added that Pierson-El is an extremely hard worker and will continue to develop as a player.
He is going to continue to develop as a player, he is a hard working young man, a lot of people don’t realize that, we see him every day so we know how hard he works. He puts a lot into his preparation, it is paying off for him.”
Beck added, “He has excellent ball skills—he tracks the ball very well.”
As for Nebraska’s opponent on Friday, Beck said that the Hawkeyes front seven is the strongest part of the Iowa defense.
Upfront they are really good, they are big and physical.”
Nebraska will practice again on Wednesday afternoon. Friday’s Big Ten conference clash between Nebraska and Iowa will be nationally televised on ABC at 11:00 a.m. (Central).

The highest ranked team from outside the Big Five conferences is guaranteed one spot in the four New Year’s Bowls affiliated with the playoff but not hosting semifinals.

Nebraska senior I-back Ameer Abdullah has been named one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation’s top running back.

Abdullah is joined as finalists by fellow Big Ten running backs Tevin Coleman of Indiana and Melvin Gordon of Wisconsin. With the trio of Big Ten running backs being selected as finalists, it marks the first time in the 25-year history of the award that all three finalists are from the same conference. The finalists were determined by a vote of the Doak Walker National Selection Committee.

The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced on ESPN during The Home Depot College Football Awards from Orlando on Thursday, Dec. 11.

Abdullah is the third Nebraska running back to be named a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, joining Calvin Jones (1993) and Ahman Green (1997).

A native of Homewood, Ala., Abdullah has rushed for 1,417 yards this season, including four 200-yard rushing games, despite being limited by a knee injury over the past three games. Abdullah ranks among the top 10 in the country in rushing yards per game, all-purpose yards per game and scoring.

Abdullah has set a Nebraska career record with 6,798 all-purpose yards, a total that ranks second in Big Ten history. Abdullah was a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award as a junior in 2013.

In addition to being a Doak Walker Award finalist, Abdullah is a finalist for four other national awards, including the Senior CLASS Award, the Wuerffel Trophy, the Paul Hornung Award and the Pop Warner College Football Award.

Off the field, Abdullah is set to graduate in December, completing his degree work at Nebraska in 3 ½ years.

No. 15 Big Red Battle Bruins on Black Friday

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe No. 15 Nebraska women’s basketball team will complete a three-game non-conference swing against Pac-12 competition when the Huskers head to Los Angeles to take on UCLA Friday afternoon.

Tip-off between the Big Red (4-0) and the Bruins (0-3) is set for 3 p.m. (central) at Pauley Pavilion. The game will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks with Jim Watson and Tammy Blackburn on the call.

Matt Coatney and Jeff Griesch will call the action on the Husker Sports Radio Network. The game can be heard live in Lincoln on B107.3 FM and 93.3 FM in Omaha, along with free live audio on Huskers.com.

Nebraska will take aim at a sweep of its three Pac-12 foes, after running to a 66-43 win over Utah in a return to the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln on Sunday. Senior forward Emily Cady erupted for a career-high 25 points against the Utes, while adding nine rebounds. Junior Rachel Theriot added an outstanding all-around performance with 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, as the two Husker stars combined for 45 points to outscore the Utes on their own.

Theriot, a 6-0 junior point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, who was named to the preseason watch lists for both the Wooden Award and the Wade Trophy this week, added 14 points and four assists at Washington State last Wednesday. Cady contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the 82-61 win over the Cougars to begin NU’s Pac-12 journey.

Tear’a Laudermill, a 5-9 senior guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., led five Huskers in double figures against the Cougars. Laudermill, who played her high school basketball at Canyon Springs, has traditionally played well in her returns to Los Angeles. As a sophomore in 2012-13, Laudermill hit a go-ahead three-pointer as the shot clock expired with less than two minutes left to propel the Huskers to a win over the Trojans. Last season, in a pair of NCAA Tournament games at Pauley Pavilion, Laudermill averaged 17.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal for the Huskers.

AP Source: Broncos Waive McManus, Sign Barth

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — A person with knowledge of the transactions says the Denver Broncos have switched kickers again, waiving rookie Brandon McManus and signing Connor Barth, who hasn’t played since 2012.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Tuesday because the moves hadn’t been announced. The Denver Post first reported the switch.

Barth, a five-year veteran, and 13-year pro Jay Feely worked out for the team Tuesday, 48 hours after McManus clanked a 33-yard field goal off an upright in Denver’s 39-36 win over Miami.

The Broncos traded a seventh-round draft pick to the Giants for McManus in August after Matt Prater’s suspension. They later released Prater, who signed with Detroit.

Solid on kickoffs, McManus was 9 for 13 on field goal attempts.
